Chapter 1
~~~~~
4 Years later
Draco sat back in his large black chair with a heavy sigh. He was sitting in his office at his company’s main building for the first time in almost 4 years. He’d been traveling abroad ever since the war, learning whatever he could about herbs and ingredients, and building up a reputation separate from his father and the Dark Lord. However it was still hard to walk around Britain without seeing the sneers on the faces of witches and wizards as they walk past him. No matter what, he kept his chin up and didn’t allow any talk to get in his way. He was going over some papers before he went home for the afternoon when he felt a cramp in his leg compel him to get up and walk about for a bit.
He had built a company from the ground up dealing in potion making. He even had a shop in Diagon Alley. But his main office was not too far from Diagon Alley, and since he’d opened the shop while out of country he decided to go walk about and see the shop for the first time and see how much the area had changed since the end of the war. He told his secretary where he would be if he was needed and walked the 15 minutes to the Alley where he’d spent a good chunk of his childhood. After taking a half hour inspecting his shop, Draco was satisfied with how his store manager was handling things. Not willing to go back to the office just yet, the blonde decided to find a place to enjoy himself a little bit without the sneers and whispering from the people around him. So when he reentered the muggle streets of London, Draco meandered a bit until he found himself faced with a farmers market.
Intrigued, Draco took advantage of it and looked around the products and produce being sold. Eventually he found himself sitting in front of a seemingly new cafe drinking a cup of black coffee while the sun warmed his back. The September day held a hint of chill, warning of the autumn to come but it wasn’t cold enough to warrant sitting inside. He sat there watching the crowd whenever he looked up from his paper.
He’d brought a copy of The Daily Prophet in case he’d have to avoid any unseemly persons who wanted to openly show their distaste for him. But now that he wasn’t anywhere near those that would behave in such a way he took it upon himself to actually enjoy the paper. He was reading a particularly engrossing article when a large ball rolled up and bumped his ankle. It wasn’t hard enough to hurt but it was enough to make him put his paper down, and reach for his wand in one fluid motion. His hand stopped inside the pocket of his jacket, prepared to use his wand discreetly if need be when he saw a small boy awkwardly running after his ball.
Draco stared at the boy with his mouth wide open. The boy was about 4 or 5 years old with platinum blond hair that was kept short and spiky. He almost gasped out loud when the child looked up at him and brilliant green eyes stared back at him. To his knowledge he had never known anyone to have hair like his own, let alone to have eyes like that. And as far as he was aware he didn’t have any siblings, unless there was one tucked in a dungeon somewhere that someone had neglected to tell him about. How could there be another being out there with hair like his. He racked his brain trying to come up with an explanation but he couldn’t come up with one.
The boy smiled at him and handed Draco his ball. Frowning, Draco leaned forward a little and held out his hands right as the boy dropped it, as if he knew Draco would take it. Those eyes sparkled in a way that felt familiar and tugged at feelings he couldn’t put a name to. The boy held out his hand, reaching up to touch Draco’s own hair which fell just past his shoulders. Not understanding why this child was acting so calm around him, he leaned forward. If he were anyone else he would have smiled at the excited giggled that came from the boy as small hands gently wrapped around a large lock of his hair. They were both transfixed with the other, at least that was Draco’s excuse for his current lack of caring for personal space. Suddenly a voice rang out not too far away. A voice that made Draco’s body fill with ice and heat all at the same time.
”Ciel Scorpius Potter!” That voice was filled with a stern anger laced with a hint of fear. The boy, Ciel, let go of Draco’s hair with a little giggle.
”Uh oh.” He turned and jogged away from Draco as a man stepped forward with his hands on his hips, scowling down at the boy as he ran towards him. The boy raised his arms and immediately the anger etched on the man’s face melted away with a soft frustrated smile and a shake of his head. He reached down and picked up the boy, expertly placing him on his hip. The sight of the two was equivalent to a blow to Draco’s gut. It was beautiful and so out of place all at the same time. And it had occurred to Draco that it was just his luck that he would find this man, of all people, in such an out of place area such as a muggle Farmers Market. Harry Potter. After his moment of awe, it also dawned on Draco that it had been some time since he’d heard Harry’s name mentioned in the Daily Prophet. He was certain the Daily Prophet would have been all over Harry having a child if they knew, which begged to question if Harry wasn’t using some sort of concealment spell on the boy to keep him out of the viper’s field of vision. And there was no doubt that the child was his. No one could replicate those eyes.
”I told you to stay close Ciel. You know better than to run off like that. I’m sorry sir if my son-“ He turned towards the man as he spoke and stopped when his eyes landed on the blonde who stood slowly with the ball in hand. Draco was slightly amused that the man he hadn’t seen in years seemed to panic momentarily before putting on that Gryffindor bravado that he was famous for and smiled lightly.
”Draco.” He adjusted Ciel on his hip uncomfortably then turned his face towards Ciel when the boy pointed at Draco.
”Daddy look! He has my hair!” The boy was so thrilled with Draco’s hair that Harry couldn’t help but smile.
”Yes he does.” He returned his gaze to Draco who was watching him intently, making him look away with a faint blush.
Draco raised an eyebrow at Harry’s behavior. As soon as he saw Harry with the boy he knew who the other parent had to be. He was a little upset that he hadn’t been told but he stifled that emotion because under the circumstances, he figured it was only to be expect. He was the one who’d left the country right after that night with no way of communicating with the man. Sighing, he walked forward and held the ball out to Ciel.
”Here you go. Don’t want to lose this” Ciel took the ball back with a giggle and wiggled until Harry finally put him down once again. They watched as the boy ran a few feet away to grab onto Hermione who stood off to the side with Teddy without either of the two adults knowing. The look on Hermione’s face held mild surprise. She took hold of Ciel’s hand and with a nod to Harry she turned and walked on down towards the other end of the market where there were various booths selling cheese.
Harry stood there in front of Draco not saying anything, not sure if he should feel guilty or proud or what. After a few awkward moments Draco gestured for them to return to his table. They sat down at the table and Draco ordered another round of coffee, this time ordering one for Harry as well. Harry thanked the blonde for the drink and sipped it.
After a few moments of silence Draco cleared his throat, “He’s mine.” It was a statement rather than a question. Harry flinched before nodding his head.
”Yeah. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. I would have-“ He stopped talking when Draco held up his hand.
”I left the country right after that night. You wouldn’t have been able to contact me and since I have been gone until recently there was no way you could tell me. I came back only last month.” The fact that Harry and Draco were sitting in public having a civil conversation about the son Draco didn’t know he had made Harry’s nervousness evaporate and he began to laugh. The indignant look on Draco’s face made him laugh even harder. “I don’t see why this is funny Potter.”
Harry gained control of himself, at least enough to be able to speak. “Don’t be a prat. Please, at this point call me Harry. I wasn’t laughing at you I promise. Just the situation is oddly funny to me. Never in a million years would I have thought I’d see you in a muggle place like this let alone that we’d be in this situation. Yet here we are.” He sipped his coffee then set it back down before looking at Draco seriously, “You’re his father, so I wont keep you from him. But Draco, if you plan to leave after you make contact with him, I ask that you don’t even try.” His eyes filled with concern. ”I don’t want him to learn about his father, get to know him and then be disappointed if you plan on taking off.”
Draco could understand why Harry said it but his words still stung. He couldn’t help the familiar sneer that flashed across his face, “Do you honestly think I would abandon my own son now that I know I have one?” Nodding quietly, Harry grabbed a piece of paper out of his pant pocket and pulled a pen out from behind his ear. He wrote down his address, hesitating a moment before handing it to Draco.
”This is where we live. The wards should allow you in now that I’ve given you the address. If you were to give that paper to anyone else it will automatically change the address and neither you nor the person you gave it to will ever find the house.” Harry glared at the eye roll Draco gave him, “Being me, I have to be cautious that my privacy is protected. Either way, you are welcome any time at the house” He handed the piece of parchment over to Draco and stood up. “I have to catch up with Hermione. She’s great with the boys but our son can still be a handful” That thought made Harry smile again. His eyes glanced over Draco before he turned to leave, “You look good Draco.” With that he walked away to find his two sons.
Draco watched the other man walk away with curiosity. The man was still as beautiful as he remembered and he couldn’t deny that he found it rather arousing that the man had borne his son in that lithe body. Looking down at the address, Draco was surprised to see that it wasn’t the address for Grimmauld Place. Finishing up his coffee, Draco stood and instead of going back to work he made his way home to do some thinking.
Meanwhile, Harry caught up with Hermione easily enough and they finished their outing. When the two small boys became unbearably grumpy, Harry took a boy on each hip, said their goodbyes and flooed home. He had just barely put the boys down for a nap when he heard someone come through the fireplace. Casting the spells that would alert him if there was trouble, Harry walked downstairs and greeted Hermione who sat at his kitchen counter with a soft drink in her hands.
Harry grabbed a drink himself before sitting next to his best friend. They sat in silence for a moment while Harry waited for Hermione to finally say what was on her mind. At last the witch finally spoke up.
”Ya know I’m not entirely surprised Harry. Everyone could guess who the father was just by Ciel’s hair if they really wanted to put their mind to it but Merlin… Seeing him with Ciel was a bit of a shock. Even for me, and I guessed a long time ago. What are you going to do about it?”
Harry stretched in his chair, “What else can I do Hermione? We didn’t leave on bad terms, and I am not going to deny him the right to get to know his own son. Besides, I’ve already warned him from even trying if he was just going to leave again. From the look of things he was rather upset that I would even think such a thing.”
The witch nodded her head, “Yeah, Malfoy’s are known to be fiercely loyal to their families. Does Ciel know yet?”
Shaking his head, Harry smiled, “No. I haven’t told him yet. Figured I would wait until I know what Draco does first. But I know this, I will protect my children no matter what, even if that means protecting him against his father. ” He took a sip from the coke can.
”And you know that means you’ll have to officially tell the rest of them don’t you? And if you and Draco decide to raise your child together the press will get involved. I’m surprised that you were able to keep Ciel out of the newspapers up to this point. But you know as well as I do that Draco is still in the newspaper. Granted they didn’t say anything about him being in Britain but his company is constantly under the eye of everyone. I’m surprised they hadn’t written about Draco’s return actually.”
”Hermione, you know as well as I do that Kingsley has helped a great deal in keeping Ciel from being noticed. Between his influence and that charm that he gave me I’ve been able to replicate that charm so both the boys wear it. That’s kept any who wish them harm or to write about them from seeing them or remembering them.” Harry paused as his thoughts contemplated that thought. “But I can’t deny that I’m a little afraid Hermione. I honestly expect to see a picture of us in the paper tomorrow with how they like to tail him.” Harry sighed heavily, “Ciel and Teddy are my world. But I love him. I have for a long time and now he’s suddenly here and he seems interested in wanting to know our son.” He placed a hand on his stomach where he had once carried Ciel, “What will people say when they hear their god forsaken hero is not only in love with a former death eater but carried and is raising his child?” He looked over at Hermione with questioning eyes.
The uncertainty in Harry’s eyes softened any thought Hermione might have had. She hadn’t seen a look like that since the day they had found out Harry was pregnant. She reached out and squeezed his arm, “Harry James Potter, I told you once before that the only way two wizards can become pregnant is by power and love. Even if the two were not in balance with each other, you could not have become pregnant without both ingredients. So somewhere he felt something for you, and who cares what the rest of the world thinks. The fact that you and him made a child together says everything that there can be said about it.” Harry couldn’t help but smile as he shifted to hug his friend tightly.
”You’re too good of a person Hermione. I love you.”
Hermione giggled, “I love you too. Now,” She pulled away with a small kiss to Harry’s cheek, “I have a needy husband at home so I’d better go. Everything will be fine ok?” She squeezed Harry’s arm once again before leaving for home. Harry spent the rest of the day cleaning the house, preparing snack for the boys and doing a bit of light reading.
Over the next few days Harry scoured the paper looking for any leak in his personal life. He’d been careful with Ciel and didn’t take him to major wizarding areas often so as to avoid anyone putting two and two together on the off chance that the charm failed. For even with the charm on Ciel, Harry was sure there was some sort of loophole that he and Kingsley hadn’t thought of when making them. It wasn’t that Harry was embarrassed by Ciel, quite the opposite. But Harry wasn’t ready to put his son through the issues of being in the press all the time. However, days followed and no leak emerged in the paper and Harry sighed heavily. Almost a week later Harry was sitting in his bar stool reading a book while Teddy played in the living room and Ciel played in the playroom. Harry had furnished the house in such a way that one could sit in the stools for hours without becoming uncomfortable for moments like this, where he could look up and glance in either direction and check in on his sons. He had just returned to his book when there was a knock on the front door. Ciel, who had been playing with a toy dropped it and ran to the door with a squeal.
”Ciel if you open that door you know what will happen.” Harry warned as he closed his book before walking towards the front door. Ciel stood next to the door knob and watched it intently while doing a little dance. Harry had spelled the door so that the young ones could not open the front door without an adult’s permission. Teddy had walked out of the front door when he was 3 which had been when Harry decided to spell the front door and backyard gates in such a way. It didn’t cause any damage but it would make them ich furiously for hours. Shaking his head he leaned against the archway that led into the play room. “Alright, you may open the door”
Ciel struggled for a moment with the door knob before finally pulling the door open. When the door revealed their visitor Harry stood up straight, subconsciously straightening his appearance as best he could. Today just had to be a lazy stay at home day! Draco stood on his porch with his hands in his pockets. He looked nervous and uncertain which were not normal things for the man to show on his face. Ciel squealed and wrapped his arms around Draco’s leg.
”Twin!” Ciel laughed excitedly as he clung to the man.
Harry frowned lighty, “Ciel please. Mind your manners.” He walked forward intending on pulling the boy back from the clearly shocked man. He stopped when Draco held up his hand.
”It’s ok. I don’t mind.” He looked down at his son with a small smile, his heart feeling warm at the sign of affection from the boy he’d only met for a moment.
”Alright then. Would you like to come in?” Harry opened the door wider to admit their guest, chuckling when Draco walked forward with Ciel completely wrapped around his leg. The boy squealed happily at the movement as Draco moved forward. The two moved into the foyer so Harry could close the door. When he closed the door there was a small tug on his shirt. He looked down to see Teddy gripping onto his shirt while looking shyly at Draco and Ciel. Smiling warmly at his eldest, Harry reached down and picked up the boy.
Teddy had always been shy and Harry wasn’t surprised that the boy had come running to him when someone came to the door for it was a normal occurrence. When Draco looked up, his eyes widened at the little boy in Harry’s arms. The boy looked older than Ciel and he didn’t look like Harry or Ciel at all. He tilted his head in question as the boy buried his face in Harry’s neck at the realization that he was being watching.
”Draco this is Teddy, I blood adopted him after Remus and Tonks died in the war. And of course you’ve met Ciel.” Harry gestured to his home, “Welcome to our home. Please make yourself comfortable.” Draco looked around at what he could see and silently approved of the home that Harry had made for the three of them. The room off to their right was littered with toys but the rest of the house seemed to be tidy even though it was clear that the house had been lived in.
”You have a beautiful home Harry.” At that moment Ciel let go of Draco’s leg and ran over to Harry.
”Daddy I’m hurry!” Harry raised an eyebrow at the small human in front of him.
”Do you mean you’re hungry?” The small blonde child nodded his head.
”Yeah. I’m hurry!” He looked up at Harry expectantly.
There was a moment between father and son before Harry looked up at Draco. “I swear, no one else I know has a look like that other than you. He’s becoming more and more like you every day.” He smiled before sighing, “Alright I can make a snack that’ll hold you off until dinner. What about you little one?” Harry craned his neck a little to look at Teddy, “Do you have room for a snack?” The boy in his arms nodded his head. Then Harry looked at Draco, “And what about you? Do YOU have room for a snack?” The question seemed to catch Draco off guard.
Taking a second to recover Draco nodded his head, “Sure why not.” Even though he’d eaten not long ago he didn’t want to say no to the invitation. He followed Harry down the hall and into the kitchen where Harry set Teddy on a chair and helped Ciel into a chair of his own. The boys sat there quietly as Harry walked to the fridge and pulled out a couple of apples. Draco sat on a stool while he watched Harry move around the kitchen. Pulling out a cutting board and large knife Harry set it on the island and began slicing apples up with the ease of practice. He sliced up one apple, divided up the slices into two small bowls and placed them in front of the boys then returned to slice up the other apple for him and Draco.
All four of them ate in silence until Ciel finished his snack and got down. He pulled on Teddy’s hand and dragged the boy away to play in the play room. The two men watched the two run off before Harry began to clean up after the two boys. Draco watched Harry the whole time, taking the time to admire the man he had become.
”You’ve seemed to have done well for yourself Harry.” He was glad when the other man smiled back at him.
”Thank you. I’m proud of the life that I’ve built.” Placed the empty bowls into the sink and returned to the counter to face Draco. “I’m actually rather surprised that I didn’t see anything about the other day in the paper. Normally when I go out alone the paper writes about me. Even if I’m in the muggle world. You were the same way for a while if I do recall. And since it was just you and me for a time, I can’t imagine that they would give up the chance to write an article with the two of us.”
Draco smirked in his familiar way, “Don’t worry about that. Over the years I’ve gained some insider connections and I pulled some strings to get them to forget about the encounter.” When Harry raised an eyebrow Draco held up his hands, “Don’t worry. It was all legal, nothing shady. Normally I don’t care if they write an article about me, but I wanted us to get a handle on this before the press stuck their noses into our business. Speaking of which, how is it that you’re walking around with the boy and I’ve never seen anything about it in the Daily Prophet”
Harry shrugged, “I have a charm that keeps those who would write about the boys from noticing them or me when I’m with them. And, I might have also threatened them to keep any information about my family from getting into the press. Ya know, telling them if I can take down Voldemort then I can take them down too. Kingsley has also been a big help with that. They’ve left me alone since then.”
Draco smiled brightly at that, “So the man does have some Slytherin in him. I’m very impressed!”
The blonde’s answer made Harry smile, “I’m glad you’ve come, but I haven’t said anything to him about you cause I didn’t know what you wanted me to tell him.”
”Has he ever asked about me?”
Harry nodded, “Yeah, but I gave him vague answers.”
Raising an eyebrow Draco rested his head on his knuckles, “What did you say about me?”
Harry stopped cleaning up his part of their snack and flushed, “Well... I told him that his father was a great person. That he was off on a big adventure and making something of himself.” Harry shuffled nervously, turning his back on the other man, “I told him that even though he hadn’t met his father, he was very lucky to be his son. I didn’t know if telling him about you in detail was a good choice or not.” Harry stood at the sink waiting for the traditional slur or retort or something else that was relatively nasty from the blonde. But when the blonde didn’t respond Harry couldn’t make himself turn around to see why, for fear of the look on the blonde’s face. However he jumped nearly a foot off the ground when he felt delicate warm hands on his hips. He felt Draco pull close to him, resting his head on Harry’s shoulder.
Harry was utterly confused. He didn’t know whether to be upset that Draco would be so bold or extremely happy that he wanted to be so close to him. Even though he knew he shouldn’t, Harry closed his eyes and allowed himself to lean against the solid form behind him. Sighing softly, Harry turned around to face Draco, his eyes searching the blonde’s.
Draco looked back with piercing silver eyes, “If I had known that you were pregnant… If I had known that it was possible between us, I wouldn’t have left you. If you’ll let me, I wont only stay by Ciel’s side but I’ll also stay by your side. Will you let me?” He looked deep into Harry’s eyes, allowing the man in front of him to see how he really felt. As he waited he could see the uncertainty in Harry’s eyes. Those eyes flicked behind him where the children were playing then back to him.
”Draco, I don’t know. This is big and very sudden. I mean, we’ve only just met after all these years. We hardly even know each other, and we didn’t even know each other back then. Not to mention, I’ve got the boys to think about. Ciel isn’t my only son ya know. I have Teddy as well and I need him to feel just as much a part of this family as Ciel would if you decided to stay.” Harry desperately wanted to throw his arms around the blonde man and kiss him senseless but he was also afraid. He knew that Draco leaving wasn’t a result of them or anything else. That night long ago had been a mutual one night stand. One night to forget all their past history and love each other the way they really had wanted to do all along. Draco leaving had hurt but it was no one’s fault.
Then something crossed his mind, “And I don’t want you to stay if you’re only going to stay because you found out about your son. If you had never seen Ciel would you have really offered to stay by my side?” Slowly Harry pushed against Draco’s chest, shaking his head. “No. I couldn’t stand that. I never said it to you back then but I do love you and I can’t stand that you would only stay by my side because we had a son.” Harry felt his lip twitch as his heart broke at the sound of rejection coming from his lips. He’d dreamed of the day when Draco came and said he wouldn’t go away again but somehow this didn’t feel the same. There were too many variables and Harry couldn’t be sure of anything.
The words coming from the brunette’s mouth were shocking for Draco. Never had a day gone by that he didn’t think about Harry, hadn’t thought about coming back and sweeping him off his feet and taking him with him on his travels. But he had never thought that Harry would feel the same way as he did. As quickly as he could, he pulled Harry back to him and planted a soft, warm kiss on the lips he’d been dreaming about for over four years. He kept his hands on Harry’s hips, holding them firmly but not so firm that Harry couldn’t push him away. The other man quickly melted in his arms as their lips melded together.
When Draco pulled back Harry looked as if he was ready to just collapse. The blonde nuzzled Harry’s neck, placed a chaste kiss on the thick column of flesh before pulling back enough to really look at Harry.
”We are both stubborn bastards you know that? I loved you too back then and that hasn’t changed. Let me court you or whatever you want so that I can prove to you that I want to stay and love all of you. You, Ciel and yes I’ll even accept Teddy as my own” He smiled gently when Harry nodded, wrapping his arms around his neck. Draco held the man close to him, not saying a word when he felt the man in his arms shake softly. Instead of pulling a classic Draco moment and opening his mouth to voice the jibe about Harry’s current state, he held his tongue and pulled the man tightly against himself, gently rubbing Harry’s back in an attempt to comfort the man. They stood like that for what seemed like hours.
A small voice broke them out of their little world. “Is Daddy hurting?” Small feet padded over to the two men and stared up at them with wide eyes. Draco looked down at his son as Harry sniffled, trying to wipe his eyes before he looked at his son. Ciel ran away for a moment before coming back with a stuffed animal in his hands. He tugged on Draco’s shirt and held the animal up.
”Here. Daddy hugs me and Drake when I hurt.” Harry sniffled again as Draco took the white stuffed dragon into his hands. He raised an amused eyebrow at the toy but turned and hugged Harry again, this time with the toy nestled between them. Harry silently cried a few more moments before he could gain control of himself. Holding the animal to his chest, he pulled away from Draco and lowered himself to pull the boy who had not left into his arms. He hugged him tightly and placed a wet sloppy kiss on the boy’s cheek.
”You are a wonderful boy do you know that?” He smiled and held Drake out to the boy. “Thank you for letting Daddy borrow your dragon. You and Draco have made me feel very special just now.” His compliment made the young child flush lightly and hug his dad tightly around the neck before racing out of the room. Harry stood back up, wiping his eyes vigorously. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get like that in front of you Draco. Unfortunately, since Ciel was born I’ve become a bit more emotional than I used to be.”
Every time Draco watched Harry interact with Ciel or vice versa he felt like he’d been knocked off his own two feet. He just couldn’t believe his luck. “You have no reason to be sorry. If anything I am the one who should be sorry,” He shrugged when Harry looked at his curiously, “I overwhelmed you and I’m sorry for that.”
Harry chuckled to himself, “It’s ok. We were never the types to ease into anything so why change that now?” He shook his head and finished cleaning up the kitchen. When that was done Harry and Draco walked into the playroom where Teddy immediately ran to hide behind Harry’s leg. Shaking his head, Harry lowered himself down until he was sitting on the floor. Immediately Teddy climbed into his lap, pressing into his chest. Draco took a seat in a chair that had been placed in the corner to watch the children play. Ciel ran over to Draco with his dragon in hand and climbed into Draco’s lap.
Leaning forward, Harry whispered into Teddy’s ear, “What’s the matter little one?”
Teddy curled in Harry’s lap and buried his face in Harry’s chest, clutching the man’s shirt tightly. The five year old boy was almost a full year older than Ciel yet still small for his age and Harry was constantly amazed at how sensitive the boy was. The boy’s size was the only reason why the boy could fit so easily into Harry’s lap like he was. Teddy’s soft soprano voice replied back, “I don’t like it went Daddy is hurting.” The boy’s lower lip trembled.
Harry hugged the child tightly to him, rubbing the boy’s back and couldn’t help the smile that tugged his lips. “Ya know what? That man over there helped me feel better.” Teddy turned until he could watch Draco and Ciel talking quietly amongst themselves. Teddy looked back at Harry with a serious face.
“He’s Ciel’s other Daddy isn’t he?” Harry leaned back a little, surprised by the boy’s ability to put two and two together. He nodded his head.
”Yeah. And ya know, he’d like the chance to become your other daddy as well. What do you say to that? Would you like that?”
Teddy turned back to watch Draco for a while before slowly climbing off of Harry’s lap and shyly walked over to Draco and Ciel. Ciel noticed Teddy’s approach and made room for the boy on Draco’s lap. When Teddy stood before the pair he looked at Draco and then at his lap and then back at Draco not entirely sure he was ok with this new change. Draco smiled at the boy and held out his free hand.
”Would you like to join us Teddy? I’ve got room for one more up here.” He waited patiently as Teddy looked at the hand cautiously. After a moment, Ciel happily occupied with Drake, Teddy timidly took Draco’s hand and allowed himself to be pulled into Draco’s lap alongside Ciel.
Harry watched the three from his spot on the floor. His heart filling with unbearable happiness at the picture that the trio made. He almost wanted to cry again when Teddy walked up to Draco. The boy didn’t do such things to non-family members and the fact that the boy had made the first move was fantastic and made him feel like everything was possible. They could actually be a family. He brought his knees up, wrapping his arms around his legs and resting his head against his knees. He sat happily listening to the various conversations that were happening not even two feet away from him.
Time was completely lost on Harry until he glanced at the clock and stretched. He stood up and stretched again, looking at the trio who hadn’t budged from their spot for over an hour and a half. He placed his hands on his hips and cleared his throat. The sound effectively made three pairs of eyes turn to look at him.
”Alright. Who is helping me tonight?” He raised an eyebrow and both boys turns to each other. Draco raised an eyebrow not at all understanding what was going on. The boys held up their fist and after 3 rounds of rock-paper-scissors later Ciel skipped into the kitchen while Ted pouted on Draco’s lap. Draco shook his head in question to Harry.
Harry smiled, “They like to compete for who is going to help me with dinner. Teddy helped me last night.” He leaned in and placed a kiss on top of Teddy’s head. “Why don’t you show Draco your drawings? I’m sure he would like to see how talented you are hun” With that little suggestion, Teddy hopped off of Draco’s lap and took the man’s hand. He then pulled the man upstairs to show case his drawings. Meanwhile Harry walked into the Kitchen where Ciel had already pulled out his apron. Harry pulled out his own apron and tied it on. Harry and Ciel spent the next half hour cooking and cutting. While the two were alone Harry took that opportunity to talk with Ciel.
”Ciel, sweetheart I have a question to ask you.” Harry lowered the temp on the pan of chicken that was frying then knelt down so he could be level with Ciel. The boy stood still and waited for Harry to speak. “What do you think about Draco hun? And you know that I want you to be honest with Daddy”
Ciel furrowed his brow for a moment then he smiled brightly, “I want Papa to stay. Please let Papa stay?” Harry stared at his child, so young and supposedly less perceptive than adults. Running a hand through his messy hair, Harry sat down on the floor baffled with his own son. What is it with his sons? Why were they so bloody perceptive at so young an age? Ciel walked forward until he was standing next to Harry. “He has the same hair as me. And his name sounds like my Dragon’s name.”
That logic Harry couldn’t deny. He shook his head and chuckled lightly, “So you would be ok if he stuck around? He asked me if he could stay and I’d like you to get to know him.” Ciel bounced up and down, clapping his hands.
”I have two Daddies!” Harry got up off the ground and put Ciel to work while he finished with the actual cooking part. When their meal was complete, Harry magically set the table and turned to Ciel.
“Why don’t you go call Teddy and Draco to dinner?” He laughed when Ciel tore through the house screaming at the top of his lungs.
“TEDDY!!! PAPA!!! IT’S DINNER TIME!!!” Harry shook his head for what seemed like the hundredth time that day. He went about placing the food on the table as Teddy and Ciel tore back into the kitchen and ran straight for their spots at the table. Draco followed right behind them at a walk. When he entered the room he came over to Harry, taking the bowl of salad from the other man.
”Why is Ciel running around calling me Papa? Did you tell him?” He kept his voice low so his words could only be heard by Harry.
”He figured it out. I asked him what he thought of you and he just came out and said it. And of course I wasn’t going to lie to him. He wants you to stay.” Harry grabbed a few bottles of salad dressing and followed Draco to the table. They all sat down and Draco was pleasantly surprised to find that Harry was a very decent cook. The boys chatted about various subjects with each other, or rather Ciel chatted about various subjects and Teddy, Harry and Draco pitched in their thoughts every now and then. The dinner ran a little longer than Harry normally would have let it but the boys were so excited with Draco’s attendance at the table that he couldn’t disappoint them.
When dinner came to a close, Teddy and Ciel excused themselves and ran upstairs to play. Harry stood up with a small pained grunt, glancing out the window. He could feel autumn setting in without having to see it outside. He stretched and began clearing the table. Draco sat for a moment and watched Harry for the umpteenth time that day. He watched his love, admiring the man he could finally call his own. The brunette came back over to the table, picking up the plates and catching Draco’s eyes watching him. A red flush tinted is cheeks.
”What?”
Draco shook his head, “I am making up for over four years of not laying my eyes on you. You’re beautiful.” He felt triumphant when that flush deepened and he faintly remembered how far that flush spread. Harry turned back to his task and finished clearing off the table. He waved his hand and all the dirty dishes were cleaned and vanished to be placed back in their proper places in the cupboard. When he turned back to Draco he ignored the surprised look the other man sported. Normally he didn’t use wandless magic around people but in his own home he felt like it was fair game.
“Since when did you learn how to use wandless magic?”
Harry paused for a moment while he thought about it. “I suppose I learned it after defeating Voldemort. After I died by his hand and came back, it was as if my magic were released from some sort of cage and I’ve been able to do wandless magic ever since.” Harry promptly rolled his eyes at the awed and proud gleam in Draco’s eyes. This was why he kept his mouth shut about his ability.
”You’re a lot more powerful than you let on aren’t you?” Draco’s only reply was a shrug of the shoulders, “Come on Harry. If you’re powerful enough to use wandless magic then you’ve got to have immense powers. Even then, most of the greats used a pattern to cast wandless magic and you didn’t. If you’re power is that great, how come no one can feel it?”
”I may have a magical shield or two… or more that keeps my powers from being detected by others. It would just cause problems if others were to know. So if I hear that others are finding out I’ll know who to go to and believe me, I wont spare you Draco Malfoy” Harry threatened the blonde mildly. He then took Draco’s hand and pulled him into the living room where they sat on the couch. Thankfully Draco dropped the subject and they spent the next few hours catching up on things they’d been doing. Harry told Draco all the highlights of Ciel’s and Teddy’s life up to that point, making sure to pull out some of the photo albums Harry had kept of them. In return, Draco told Harry all about his business and his travels. They’d been talking about Draco’s time in France when Teddy came down the stairs in his pjs.
The boy was yawning almost non-stop as he climbed up onto the couch and curled in Harry’s lap once again. Draco’s story ceased as they watched the child in Harry’s arm. Turning his head he looked at the clock hanging on the wall. The clock stated that it was almost 9 o’clock which meant it was bed time. Harry looked at Draco, uncertain if he should invite him to join him in getting the boys ready for bed. After a few seconds of thought, he thought he might as well give the other man the option.
”Well, I need to get the boys to bed. If you’d like to help you can. Otherwise I’ll be back in a few.” He maneuvered himself on the couch until he could stand up with the already sleeping boy in his arms. He walked out of the room, up the stairs, into Teddy’s room, and gently placing the boy in his bed while avoiding the toys scattering the floor. After tucking Teddy in, Harry placed a kiss on the boy’s forehead before waving his hand, placing his alarm spell. He turned around to find Draco watching him again.
”What?” Harry picked up a few of Teddy’s toys and put them away then walked out into the hall, closing the door behind him.
Draco shook his head. Harry walked into Ciel’s room to find the boy running around his room with Drake in his hands. When Ciel saw Harry he ran for him holding the dragon up high. Harry gasped dramatically, rushing forward, dipping down and picking up Ciel superman style, spinning around as Ciel made Drake ‘fly’ through the air with a loud roar. Harry spun around as he moved closer to bed. When they came near Harry spun just right and let go of Ciel. The boy was gently tossed into the air and landed on his bed laughing uncontrollably.
Sitting on the edge of Ciel’s bed, Harry helped Ciel get under the covers. “Did you brush your teeth my little dragon rider?”
The boy nodded, cuddling with Drake. “Yes Daddy. Me and Drake brushed our teeth.”
”Good!” Harry leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his son’s forehead. “Now, what’s the story tonight?”
The boy thought for a moment, glanced at Draco who was leaning against the wall. He looked back to Harry and pulled Drake out from underneath him and handed him to Harry. “I want Drake’s adventure”
Harry glanced at Draco himself, his face flushing at the request but he had never said no to a requested story and he wasn’t about to start now. Taking hold of Drake, he stood up and began an elaborate story about a platinum blonde dragon who had traveled the land trying to find that one person to spend his life with but had fallen into working for an evil dragon. The black dragon made Drake do horrible things until the black dragon was finally over thrown by a green dragon who had up until then been bitter enemies with each other. Since the day they’d first met they would constantly fight with one another. Harry described how on one fateful day the two began to fight but the green dragon, Harrison, had gone too far. He’d hurt Drake very badly and it was then that he’d understood why he’d hated the other dragon so much. His anger towards the other dragon had long ago turned into feelings of love that held the disguise of hate. Drake had been able to heal but Harrison had never felt the same afterwords. When Harrison finally defeated the black dragon, the two dragons put aside their differences for once in their lives and lived happily for the rest of their lives.
The whole time, Harry used magic to bring Drake to life as well as the other two dragon toys that Harry had created for his son and always used to help tell his story. Ciel, as always, practically sat on the edge of his seat the whole time, listening intently. The boy never got tired of this particular story and he always cheered when Harry got to the ending. At the end of the story Harry returned the toys to their lifeless states and tucked Ciel back under the covers with Drake tucked under the boy’s chin. He placed a kiss on top of the boy’s head and turned towards the door, avoiding Draco’s piercing stare the whole time. He knew that Draco knew the story had been about them and he didn’t want to talk about it right then. Draco came forward and was happy when Ciel wrapped his arms around the older man’s neck.
They walked to the door and as Harry shut the boy’s door, he placed his alarm spell and bid the boy goodnight. As soon as the door was shut Harry found himself being pressed against the wall and warm soft lips pressed hungrily against his own. The two snogged for quite some time before they pulled apart to replenish their oxygen stores. Draco locked eyes with Harry and smiled brilliantly.
”You’re a natural at this. It’s amazing to me how you handle them both.”
That thought made Harry chuckle, “I wasn’t so good at it at first. I was a 17 year old with a one month baby and another on the way. I had to learn fast, particularly after I spent a month or two recovering after Ciel was born.” Harry closed his eyes momentarily in an attempt to catch his breath from the mind blowing kiss he’d just had. He opened his eyes again when he felt a hand rest on his stomach, Draco’s brow furrowed.
”What do you mean you spent a few months recovering?” Draco’s voice was bland but his eyes darkened with concern which made Harry’s heart swell, even if the concern was no longer needed. He patted Draco’s hand affectionately.
”Come on. I’ve got enough in me for one more story, so let’s get more comfortable.” Though Harry felt like he shouldn’t allow Draco to spend the night so soon, for once since the birth of Ciel, Harry was going to be a little selfish. He desperately wanted to at least sleep in the man’s arms now that he was back in his life. Harry took Draco’s hand and guided him across the hall to Harry’s bedroom. With a wave of his hand they were immediately changed into pj pants and loose t-shirts. Draco raised an eyebrow but he didn’t object to the fact that suddenly he wasn’t in his own clothes anymore. He allowed Harry to drag him to the bed and both of them crawled under the covers. Draco sprawled a little on one side of the bed but shifted when Harry crawled over to lay his head on Draco’s chest.
Once situated, Harry finally answered Draco’s earlier question. “It took me a few months because something went wrong after I went into labor with Ciel. I’d been an idiot and hadn’t noticed that I’d been in labor all day so of course I went about my business as if nothing was amiss. By the time I realized what was going on it was too late to get myself to St. Mungos. My doctor, along with Hermione, Andromeda, and Ron came over.” Harry paused because Draco shifted so Harry was lying on his back with Draco sitting up so he could look at Harry’s face. The man seemed deeply troubled by Harry’s story.
When they’d finished adjusting Harry continued, “I gave birth to Ciel right here in this bed. He broke my pelvis in 2 places,” Harry pointed to the hip that had broken, “but to be quite honest I don’t remember much after Ciel was born since everything went fuzzy but Hermione told me that I was bleeding out and the doctor couldn’t stop it.” As he spoke, Harry’s hand subconsciously rubbed the side of his hip area that had been broken. “And somehow my magical core got dragged into it all and I almost didn’t make it. Thanks to Dr. Jagra, instead of dying I spent months recovering between the broken pelvis and nearly unable to use magic. But I’m alive. Which is the main point.” Harry smiled lightly, turning his head from staring at the ceiling to looking at Draco’s face. Harry was shocked to see the man’s face contorted with anguish. Sitting up quickly he grabbed hold of Draco’s hand. “Don’t look like that”
Draco remained silent for several minutes before answering in a low gruff tone. “I almost killed you and I wouldn’t have even known it. I made you suffer again.”
Shaking his head, Harry scooted until he was practically sitting in Draco’s lap. “Ya know, even if I had died it would have been rather ironic. You’d spent our whole school years together trying to kill me. Dying bringing your child into the world would have been rather funny. At least to me.” Harry chuckled but he stopped when Draco sneered at him, “The hard truth is that I didn’t die. And even if I did suffer I would do it all again if it meant that I could have Ciel.” The conviction in Harry’s eyes made Draco’s guilt melt away a little but he still couldn’t shake the fact that Harry almost died giving birth to his son. He couldn’t even imagine what he would have done if he had come back to find out that he had a son and Harry had died delivering him.
”Does it still hurt? Your hip?”
Harry nodded, “Yes. When the weather is cold outside it hurts a bit. Nothing too bad I suppose. I’ve tried to get it healed but it refused to be healed with magic so it ended up healing the old fashioned muggle way. It just healed with a side effect.”
Sighing heavily, Draco laid back down on the bed, pulling Harry close to him. The other man turned around so his back was flush against Draco’s front, pulling the blonde’s arm to drape over his waist. Once Harry was settled Draco placed a gentle kiss on Harry’s neck, even though he wanted to do more. However the day when he would pin Harry underneath him once again was not tonight. There was too much he needed to prove just yet before they could get there. Until then he contented himself with holding the love of his life.
”You told Ciel about us?”
Harry’s body tensed for a moment before relaxing with a little sigh, “Because. I had wanted to tell him more about you but I didn’t know how at the time. So I told him our story with a few changes.”
Draco chuckled, “I like Drake’s color. A very dignified color if I do say so myself”
Harry laughed, lightly elbowing Draco in the side where he could reach, “Arrogant bastard.” Harry settled once again against Draco and pulled the covers tighter around them, “We’d better get some sleep. The boys like to wake up early.” It didn’t take long for Harry to fall asleep but Draco stayed awake. The fact that he was in bed before 10 said something but he was ok with that. He still had a hard time imagining that he was laying there with Harry in his arms. He’d come to the house that day with the sole intention of seeing Ciel and attempting to get to know the boy. Spending the night had not been on the agenda. Draco lie awake for a while, listening to Harry’s steady breaths as he slept before sleep over took Draco as well.
~~~~~
Harry found himself wide awake all of a sudden and for a second he couldn’t figure out why. Then a blood curdling scream filled the house. Completely forgetting that he had another person sleeping in his bed, Harry grabbed his wand that he kept under his pillow and bolted out of bed with as much grace as a troll and sprinted down the stairs were the source was coming from. Harry’s mind and body were in battle mode, his heart racing, muscles tensed, ready to kill whoever would dare to harm his children. When he ran into the kitchen where the screaming was the loudest he stopped dead in his tract for no more than two seconds before rushing forward.
On the floor was his four year old who was surrounded by broken china, flour and other baking materials. The boy sat screaming bloody murder and holding his head which was gushing blood. Harry flicked his wand as he knelt down next to Ciel, not even giving the mess on the floor a second thought as it vanished. Speaking as gently as he could he pulled Ciel’s hand away with nimble fingers to see the damage that had been done. The gash wasn’t too deep but because it was a head wound, the blood made it seem worse than it was. Sighing in relief that it wasn’t too serious, Harry picked up the boy and set him in one of the dining room chairs.
With another wave of his hand, a relatively large first aid kit appeared on the dining table. Harry began to clean the wound, using a mix of muggle and wizarding methods to patch up his son. When Harry finally cleaned the wound as best he could he looked down at his son who’s crying had slowed to soft whimpering.
”What were you doing up this early? You know to wake me up if you’re hungry before I’m up and about” His voice was low and betrayed the fear that he had felt.
Ciel whimpered, “I wanted to make breakfast for Daddy and Papa. Maggie says Maggie and her daddy makes her mommy breakfast all the time.”
For a moment Harry tried desperately to keep the smile off of his face. He lowered himself so he could look Ciel in the eye, “Maggie’s daddy is also a grown up. And she was helping, not making it all on her own. If you would like to make Papa and Daddy breakfast you need to come ask one of us for help ok?” He knew his voice wasn’t as gentle as he would have liked but there was nothing he could do about it. He waited until Ciel nodded, his eyes downcast, tears streaming down his face. Harry stood up and continued to clean and dress the wound. He cast a cleaning spell on Ciel’s hair as he couldn’t stand the boy’s platinum hair stained with blood. Once the wound was completely dressed Harry squatted down once again and placed a little kiss on Ciel’s cheek.
”I’m not mad at you.” This time Harry’s voice was soft and warm which made Ciel look up with large watery eyes.
”I sorry Daddy.” The boy launched himself forward and wrapped his small arms around the older man’s neck. Harry hugged him back.
”It’s ok. You scared me little one.” He kissed Ciel’s cheek once again before standing the boy up on the floor. “Alright, go play. I’ll take over the breakfast making today ok?” He watched the boy run off, starting a little when he noticed Draco standing in the door way to the hall with Teddy tucked in his arms. Draco set Teddy on the floor and the five year old ran into the play room to hug his brother and make his anger known about being left out of the breakfast adventure. With a heavy sigh, Harry sat on a bar stool, slumping forward until Harry buried his face in his arms. The adrenaline that had been coursing through his veins had worn off, leaving him shaking.
He felt Draco come up behind him and rested his palm reassuringly on his neck which surprisingly helped calm him a little. He sat up, pulling himself together. Draco raised an eyebrow at the brunette who stood up and began working on breakfast. He watched the man work in the kitchen but he could see the slight shaking of his hand as he cut up some ham to fry. Fearing Harry would cut himself, Draco came around the counter and took the knife from Harry’s hand and gently pushed Harry out of the way.
Smiling sheepishly Harry relinquished the knife and stepped back. “Sorry.”
Draco shook his head, “Don’t be” He glanced up at Harry, “Are mornings always this exciting here?”
A hand combed through Harry’s hair as he shook his head. “Thank goodness no. I haven’t had that much of a scare in years. I swear your son is going to give me grey hairs early.” Since he had clearly been banished from the kitchen Harry sat down on a stool once again to watch the blonde do all the cooking.
”What happened? All I know is that I was comfortably sleeping with a very sexy man in my arms then I was violently woken up and said sexy man running out the door. Then I had a sobbing child crawling into bed with me while the rest of the house seemed to be invaded by a banshee”
Harry chuckled awkwardly. “Ciel wanted to make us breakfast. I’m not entirely certain what happened but it would seem he dropped the bowl on his head somehow. His heart was in the right place even if I wish he would have asked for some help. But,” Harry took a deep breath, “He’s fine, we are all fine. Now, can I help with breakfast?”
Draco shook his head. “Wonder where he got his knack for injuring himself from. And no. You’re still shaking and I don’t want to do any first aid on you. I’m not as good as you at playing nurse.” Draco continued to bustle about the kitchen, making eggs and ham and even managing to find the sausage Harry had in the fridge. For the first time in a long time, Harry sat back and enjoyed someone else making breakfast for him and the boys.
~~~~~
A couple days later Harry was getting Ciel and Teddy ready to go to the park, making sure they had their coats since the chilly weather had finally arrived in September. Normally he loved the chilly weather but he couldn’t deny the deep ache in his hip that accompanied said weather. Ever since Ciel’s birth the cold weather made the breaks he’d suffered ache after they’d healed. He’d just finished wrapping Teddy in a scarf when Hermione’s head came through the fireplace.
”Harry?”
”Foyer Hermione.” A few seconds later Hermione came down the hall.
”Oh, were you boys heading out?” Hermione stopped.
Teddy ran up to Hermione and took the woman’s hand. “We’re going to the park! You coming?” Both boys looked up at their Aunt expectantly. The witch smiled warmly at the boys.
”How could I say no?” She ran back into the living room, stepped through the fire and came back into the house with a coat and hat. Now that everyone was ready to go, they all walked the 5 minutes to the park. They’d been there for a good 10 minutes, the boys playing on the play structures while the two adults sat on a bench nearby. When the boys were hard at play, Hermione turned to Harry.
”You’re glowing Harry.” The witch’s face was filled with mischief. “Did Draco come by?”
Harry blushed lightly but nodded anyways. “Yeah. The day he was over he even spent the night, but before you say anything ‘Mione, I know he shouldn’t have stayed the night. But they started calling him Papa before I even got the chance to say who Draco was. They already love him. And since they both apparently are incredibly perceptive without me having to say anything, I decided to do something for myself for once.”
Hermione shook her head, “Oh you can’t be too surprised Harry. You’re a pretty smart wizard, when you want to be and Draco had top marks for his house in school. As for Teddy, he’s the son of a werewolf, he’s bound to be a bit more perceptive when it comes to family relationships than others. To those with brains, it isn’t much of a guess about who Ciel’s father is. Only Malfoys have hair like that.” She wrapped her scarf around her neck a little tighter when a breeze blew through the park. Harry ground his teeth a little as the ache in his hips grew with the increased chill to the air. The witch noticed the tension in Harry’s jaw, “You should get inside Harry.”
Harry shook his head, “Nope. Not while the boys still want to play. I’ll be fine Hermione.” He smiled at his best friend, “It’s really not that bad. Promise.”
”You’re going to regret that choice and you know it”
The brunette waved the witch off as he stood up, “I’ll be fine. If it really gets that bad I’ll take a potion. Happy?” At that moment both the boys came running over and pulled the adults into a game of tag with them. They spent the rest of the morning playing at the park. By the time they got home everyone was extremely exhausted. Harry was thankful that Hermione had come with them, because by the time they had started making their way home Harry had grown increasingly quiet. His silence worried Hermione, but she didn’t say another word for she knew exactly what Harry would say. So instead she kept the boys occupied on the way home and didn’t even bat an eyelash when Harry went upstairs and closed his door. She kept the boys busy for a while until it became time for her to go. So she set the boys to playing quietly in the playroom then walked up the stairs. She didn’t open the bedroom door, instead she knocked on it to let Harry know she was there and called through the door.
”Harry? I have to go now. The boys are playing downstairs and I’ll set the wards before I leave. Call me if you need anything.” When there wasn’t a sound from inside the room, Hermione found herself worrying her lip. It was bad when Harry didn’t answer. But there was nothing she could do. All she could do was make sure the wards were up, all emergency alarms set and make sure the kids understood that they needed to behave. Once that was done, Hermione finally left.
~~~~~
That same day, Draco found himself sitting in his office when he heard a light tapping on his window. Grabbing his wand, he opened the window to let in the owl hovering outside. Once open, the owl swooped in and landed gracefully on the owl stand on Draco’s desk. The creature made Draco look up from his paperwork with a soft hoot. The sound itself sounded like someone blew through a wood recorder in the softest of ways. When he laid eyes on the bird, he was astounded. It wasn’t very often that he saw one of these birds as they were considered rare outside their normal habitat. The Sokoke Scops owl that was peering at him was a beautiful rufous color with big yellow eyes that seemed to pierce through everything. It hooted again politely, hopping off of the stand before hoping over him. It stopped when it almost hopped on top of some paperwork Draco had been working on it. It looked down, then looked up at Draco then returned his vision back to the paper as if asking the blonde to move the paper.
The display nearly made Draco laugh openly. Instead he indulged the bird and moved his paperwork out of the way. Once again he was astounded when the owl hooted a thanks and hopped the rest of the way over to Draco. Once there, the owl lifted his leg and waited patiently until Draco untied the note that had been attached to the creature. Draco reached into his top drawer and pulled out an owl treat which was gratefully accepted by the owl. The owl hopped back to the stand and began preening himself.
”You’re a beauty aren’t you??” Draco asked. His only answer was a soft hoot and continued preening. Chuckling, Draco unraveled the note. At first he couldn’t understand the note at all for it was all scribbles and random letters. The more he looked at the note he was eventually able to decide three words. ‘Food’ ‘Please’ and ‘Papa’. Those words surprised Draco deeply. Only two people ever called him Papa and those two were supposed to be safe with Harry. He stood up and coaxed the owl onto his arm, though it did not take much coaxing. The owl seemed more than pleased to go for a ride in which it did not need to carry itself. “You might not like this. Please dont bite me.”
He waited until the owl hooted in acknowledgment before apparating in front of Harry’s house. When Draco stood firmly on his own two feet, the owl hooted in distress and lightly nipped at Draco’s fingers.
”Hey,” Draco scolded half heartedly, “I thought I asked you not to bite me. Unless you would have preferred to fly home all the way. This is your home isn’t it?” The owl stared at him for a moment before fluffing his feathers a little and hooting a small apology. In all honesty, Draco wasn’t entirely sure how he could understand the owl without using real words but he could understand the creature. And it was quite helpful. After their interaction, Draco hurriedly walked up to the door, pulling out a key that Harry have given him. Fitting the key into the key hole, Draco unlocked the door and walked into the house. Immediately he looked to his right and into the playroom where he found Ciel and Teddy playing quietly.
”Hello boys.” Draco held out the note he’d received, “I got your message”
”Papa!!!” Ciel cried out, getting up and running over to the older man, the owl flying away as the boys rushed the blonde.
”Shhh” Teddy shushed, holding his finger over his lips, “Quiet Ciel”
Ciel stuck his tongue out at Teddy before returning his gaze up to Draco, “Papaaaa, we’re hurry!!!” the boy’s lower lip stuck out, quivering dramatically.
Draco frowned deeply. He recognized from the beginning that he knew very little of Harry and his family. But the one thing he did know was that Harry was a very attentive parent, always making sure that the boys were fed and happy. Standing up, Draco walked around the first floor in search of Harry. When he’d made a full circle around the house, Draco looked at the boys.
”Where is Harry?”
Teddy continued to hold his finger to his lips, loudly whispering, “Daddy’s taking a nap. We need to be quiet.”
Ciel tugged on Draco’s jacket, “Papa! I’m hurry!!!!” the boy cried.
Sighing in slight frustration, Draco smiled as best he could, reminding himself to keep his frustration out of his tone, “Alright. Lets get you both some food. Then I’m going to see what is wrong with your dad. What do you boys want?”
The two looked at each other contemplating. In unison they cried, “MAC AND CHEESE!!!”
Draco hushed the two before walking into the kitchen. He’d never made mac and cheese before so he had no idea what he was doing. But the ravenous ogre eyes staring longing at him was freaking him out. As the blonde rummaged through the cupboards and fridge, he found a box that plainly stated ‘Mac’n Cheese’ on it. He looked over the box and was relieved to find that there were clear instructions on how to make it. So as fast as he could, Draco made the mac and cheese per the instructions on the box. 20 minutes later Draco set a bowl in front of each child who eagerly dug into their food.
”Papa I’m thirsty” Teddy stated.
Draco sighed before quickly getting each boy a glass of water. “You boys happy now?” When two small heads shook almost uncontrollably, Draco smiled. “Good. Be good while I go upstairs.” Leaving the boys at the table, Draco bounded up the stairs. As quietly as he could, the blonde opened the door and slipped inside. Harry was indeed asleep. Upon further inspection Draco was incredibly concerned when he noticed how pale Harry looked and the tear tracks on his cheeks. As gently as he could, he sat next to Harry and went to shake him awake but stopped himself when his eyes fell upon Harry’s hands. The man had curled himself into a ball with his hands pressing into his hip. The site tugged at Draco in the most uncomfortable way. Harry had told him that the hip bothered him some but he had no idea that it bothered him to this extent.
As he watched Harry sleep, he contemplated any and all ideas that would help the brunette with his problem. What really confused him now more than ever was what Harry had said about his inability to be treated magically. But that thought process had to wait for another time. Clearly Harry was in pain and remembering that it was the cold weather that caused the pain Draco found a blanket near by and covered him with it. Placing a kiss on his forehead, Draco cast a spell on Harry that would place him in a deep sleep. He figured the man could use it with how whipped out he looked sleeping on that bed. When that was done, Draco penned a note to his secretary before going in search of Harry’s owl, mentally hunkering down for watching the kids all by himself for the first time while Harry slept and warmed up.
~~~~~
White fog maneuvered around in wisps, swirling and twirling in one fluid movement. Harry found that for some time he couldn’t move through this fog. There was nothing he could do but enjoy the free floating feeling that this fog gave him. He was enjoying the peacefully feeling he was experience floating in the fog when suddenly the fog started to lift. That floating feeling started leaving his body, resulting in his limbs becoming increasingly heavy and lead filled. Gradually his body became heavy but at the same time he also starting gaining more and more mobility. It was at this moment when he realized that his eyes were shut and he put every effort into opening his eyes.
For a moment Harry couldn’t figure out where he was. Sitting up, he rubbed his face and looked around again, finally recognizing that he was in his bedroom. Groaning, feeling as if he’d been lying on the bed for hours in one position, he looked at the digital clock that was sitting on his night stand. If he wasn’t for still feeling groggy he would have jumped up in horror. The last time he had looked at the clock was when he’d entered his bedroom after returning home from the park and that was around noon. Now, the clock read 4:30am.
”The hell!” Harry explained quietly to himself. The one good thing he noticed however was that there was a blanket that had been covering him while he slumbered and it vaguely registered that the pain in his hip had considerably been eased due to the cloth. Having decided that he’d had enough of sleeping, Harry crawled out of bed, wrapped the blanket around himself and quickly left the room. Panic and guilt filled him as he realized that he’d left the boys alone nearly all day. He didn’t make dinner, he didn’t make sure they got to bed and he didn’t make sure they were being safe. He neglected them. And that was not something he could forgive himself for. He looked in on both of his boys only to find that they were sleeping comfortably in their beds.
What surprised him most was that each of them seemed to have had a bath before they’d been put to bed. Utterly confused, and suddenly incredibly hungry, Harry made his way to the kitchen. He walked into the kitchen and something in the corner of his eye made him look into the family room. What he found shocked him greatly. There on his couch slept the one guy he never would have thought would ever even consider sleeping on a couch. Walking over to the sleeping form, Harry woke him up as gently as he could.
”Draco. Wake up” He kept shaking him until the man groaned groggily, eyes fluttering open.
”Harry.” Draco mumbled, sitting up and rubbing his face a little, “You’re awake.”
”Yeah I’m awake. How long have you been here?” Harry sat down in a chair across from Draco.
The blonde shook his head, reaching over to grab Harry’s hand and pulling the brunette over to the couch. “I dont think so sir. If you’re going to wake me up at…” Draco looked over at the clock and a classic Malfoy sneer graced his facial features, “Bugger me Harry! It’s 4:30 in the morning! Why!? It’s 4:30!! I can’t say you have the most comfortable couch so a little bit more sleep is required before you go waking me up at 4:30 in the fucking morning! As it is I’ll have a massive kink in my neck and my back is going to hurt. Bloody hell I’m going to be buying you a new couch later today. It’s as if someone died on this couch and their bones have become a part of the blasted thing!” Draco kept rambling on and on and on about the horridness of Harry’s couch and for once, all of the jibes and insults to Harry’s couch did nothing to the brunette but make him smile warmly. It was good to know that the blonde was still a foul mouthed spoiled prat at heart. What made it even better was the fact that although Draco was grumpy and spewing a massively foul rant about how wronged he was, Draco was simultaneously maneuvering Harry until the both of them were cuddling on the couch.
Every now and then Harry tried to get a word or two in but nothing could stop the blonde from his bitter explanation of how wrong it was for Harry to make Draco sleep on the couch and how he required tea and a new shirt and a great many other things. Finally Harry just gave up. There was no use trying to talk to the blonde. It was clear that Draco was not one to be woken up so early in the morning. He became a massive whinny spoiled brat that felt like the world was out to get him. So he just laid on the couch with Draco, cuddled up closely to the blonde’s chest listening as Draco ranted and raved. However when the blonde started repeating himself, Harry finally had enough. He placed a hand over Draco’s mouth and firmly stated, “Draco. Shut up and go to sleep.” For a second Draco looked like he was about to go on a new rant but then he sighed, laid his head back down on the pillow he’d been using and was immediately fast asleep.
Come morning, Draco woke up feeling very refreshed and comfortable. And very warm. When he opened his eyes and looked at the cause to what was making his front warm, he smiled brightly. He wondered when Harry had woken up and come downstairs. Not that he minded at all for he liked the thought of waking up with the love of his life in his arms. He shifted just enough to place a soft kiss to the brunette’s head. This movement made Harry shift until he was facing Draco and looking up into his face.
”Good morning.” Harry said with a small smile.
”Good morning. When did you wake up??”
Brown eyebrows raised a fraction, “You mean you dont remember?”
Draco stared blankly, “Am I supposed to?”
Chuckling, Harry sat up and stretched, “Well, when I came downstairs you were sleeping here. I woke you up, or so I thought but all you could do was complain and swear and complain some more. Mainly about how horrible my couch is. I believe you told me that someone had died on that couch and their bones had become one with it, or something like that.” Harry’s chuckling turned into an all out laugh at the red tinge to Draco’s cheeks.
”I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you or anything… When did you try to wake me up?”
”I believe it was around 4:30 in the morning.”
”Oh. That explains it. Dont wake me up that early in the morning. It doesn’t go well as you’ve found.” Draco shook his head with a light chuckle before his eyebrows furrowed and he looked at Harry with concern. “How are you feeling?”
The guilt and apprehension that Harry had been feeling before seeing Draco all came flooding back to him. Rubbing his face rather roughly, Harry shrugged, “I’m fine. I dont know what happened yesterday, I dont know how you knew to come or when you even arrived but thank you so much. I’m sure what happened makes me look like a terrible parent, which I am but I swear I-”
”Stop right there.” Draco commanded firmly, interrupting the brunette, “You are not a bad parent. In answer to your question, I got an owl around 7 last night at the office and came right over. Apparently the boys were hungry. So I fed them, hydrated them, and checked in on you. What went wrong yesterday?”
As Draco talked, Harry’s face paled drastically. That meant the boys were practically alone for nearly 7 hours depending on when Hermione had left. He’d never left the boys to their own devises for that long before. They were too young. And for them to have gotten so hungry that they owled someone was not good. Harry was pulled out of his thoughts when Draco repeated his question to him. The brunette shook his head to clear it before answering.
”Nothing went wrong yesterday. I just… I must have been really tired.”
”Bullocks” was Draco’s only response. His silver eyes drilled holed in the side of Harry’s face as the man had tried to turn away and ignore the blonde. Sighing softly, Harry caved.
”Nothing. We went to the park, I didn’t dress warmly enough and then we played too hard.”
Draco’s eyes softened a bit, “So you mean your hip was causing you pain.”
Harry glared lightly at Draco, “Yes. But I’m fine.”
”You were curled up on your bed, holding your hip and you’d been crying. That doesn’t sound like nothing to me Harry.”
”I was not crying!” Harry cried indignantly.
”Oh yes you were. Merlin Harry. How long has it been giving you this much trouble?”
”Since Ciel was born. I told you that before. But… even if I do take a nap I usually wake up in time to feed the boys.” Harry frowned practically talking to himself at this point, “I wonder why I never woke up.”
At that statement, Draco scratched his neck a little, “Well… I might have had something to do with that.” When Harry looked over at him curiously, Draco continued, “Ok. Dont be mad at me… cause suddenly I feel like this is something you’d be mad about, but when I went up to check on you, you were in pretty bad shape. So I thought the best thing for you to do was to sleep. And truly sleep. So I cast a sleep spell on you so that you wouldn’t feel anything other than sleep.”
It was true. Harry was a little peeved at the thought of Draco coming into his house without his knowledge and placing a sleeping spell on him. Once again without his knowledge. But the fact that Draco had stayed all night watching the kids, even going as far as sleeping on the couch instead of coming and sleeping with Harry was the only thing that redeemed the blonde in Harry’s eyes.
Taking a deep breath in and breathing out all the sudden high annoyance that he was feeling over what Draco had done, Harry smiled a little tightly, “I know you’re heart was in the right place. And I really really owe you one for watching the boys. And it’s not often I get to actually sleep for any decent length of time. But Draco…” Hard green eyes bore into silver, “If you ever come into my house and put me under a sleep spell without my knowledge again, you’d better hope that I dont ever wake up.”
The look in Harry’s eye meant business. There was no hint of any kind that his threat was an empty one. The finality to that threat made a shiver run up and down Draco’s spine but it wasn’t the shiver Harry would have hoped it would be. Instead of feel frightened in any way, a smirk tugged at the corner of Draco’s mouth as he was realizing just how luck he was to find himself in love with such a strong and capable person. The amount of love he felt for this person just grew and all he could do was smirk. Leaning forward, Draco ghosted a kiss on Harry’s lips.
”Understood.” Came the husky response before planting a firm kiss on those lips. The two spent the rest of their momentary alone time making out on the couch. At least until they heard pattering on the floor above them, in which case they reluctantly separated themselves and Harry started breakfast.
