Three months later, the Hogwarts express arrived in Hogsmeade for Hermione, Harry and Ginny’s final year at school. After Hermione had finally confronted Ron about his affair, and Harry had given him yet another black eye to match the other one, Ron had decided not to finish his studies at Hogwarts, but help out George in the shop instead. George was having a hard time with Fred’s death, and was thankful for the help, even though he thought Ron to be an arse for hurting Hermione.
Hermione was glad she didn’t have to worry about running into Ron all the time. She had decided she needed a serious break from him, and she was thankful that Harry and Ginny had been so supportive of her. She couldn’t wait to get back to Hogwarts and back to normal.
Except, for one little thing. Snape.
She hadn’t seen him since that night, and she was almost certain it was going to get awkward. Especially now when they were going back to being professor and student again. And it didn’t matter how sexy she thought that was, because it would never happen again. It had been a mistake.
“Hey, Mione, are feeling alright?” Ginny asked from her spot next to her in he line up to the castle. “You keep chewing your lip, I think it might start bleeding soon.”
“Don’t worry about it Ginny. It’s just being back here is … bringing back some memories. It’s going to be hard to go back to normal.” It wasn’t a lie exactly. Being back brought back some difficult memories of the war, sure. But right now the only thing on her mind was seeing Snape again.
Ginny nodded sadly and Harry patted them both on the shoulder from just behind them.
“I heard that professor McGonagall has made some sort of tribute to those that fell during the battle though. I’m excited to see what it is.” Hermione said, while trying to stop thinking about Snape’s hands all over her.
“Me too. Honestly, we need some good news after all the shit that happened this summer. You would think that we deserve some peace after the war but no …”
“Wait”, Hermione interrupted Ginny just as they were walking into the Great Hall. “What has happened over the summer?”
Hermione had decided to go to Australia over the summer to search for her parents. She had also taken it as an opportunity to distance herself from the the British wizarding world as much as possible, as her way of moving on from the traumatic events of the past few years. To be fair, it also had a lot to do with the Weasleys as well. Every chance Molly got she invited Hermione and Ron over at the same time and tried to persuade Hermione to take Ron back. The last time it happened, right before she left for Australia, Ron had ended up with boils all across his face.
“Didn’t you get news at all in Australia? Too busy sunning yourself to read the paper?” Ginny sniggered.
“You know I get very easily tanned, Ginny” Hermione sighed. “And I was looking for my parents that have no idea that I exist because I erased their memory, remember?”
“Yeah, sorry about that” Ginny apologized, looking a little ashamed. “Well, the new ministry is royally screwing up. Telling you about everything would take all night, but the latest news is that Lucius Malfoy was just released from Azkaban, and that a marriage law is going to be put in place.”
Hermione almost fell as she was sitting down at the Gryffindor table. It was a combination of being startled by what Ginny told her and trying not to look at the Head Table where she knew Snape would be sitting.
“What do you mean ‘marriage law’? They’re forcing people to marry?”
“Pretty much. And it’s totally sexist too. All muggleborn witches over the age of 20 has to marry a halfblood or pureblood wizard. It’s about all the people lost during the war. The wizarding population in Britain has almost halved.”
Hermione froze and stared at Ginny and Harry. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. A marriage law? Was that even legal?
“Greetings students.” Headmistress McGonagall was standing up at the head table and all the buzz died out. All heads turned toward the new headmistress. “I’d like to welcome all the students back for another year. We’ve all struggled over the past few years, and I think I speak for all of us, that this year is going to be a new beginning. Because of the difficult circumstances last year, a lot of you have missed out on the necessary school work, which is why we have decided to not bring in any new students this year. There will be a significant change in schedules, as well as in classes, but I think we have proven that if we work together, we can overcome anything. Now, enjoy your delicious feast.”
Hermione was so upset that she barely heard anything that McGonagall had just said, or noticed the fact that Snape was watching her the entire time. She turned to Harry and Ginny as soon as the food appeared on the table, completely forgetting the fact that she was starving.
“You didn’t think to send me a letter and warn me about this fucking marriage law while I was away?”
Harry looked up from his plate in surprise. Hermione almost never used foul language. Only when it came to Ron.
“Well, first of all, there is no way that the law is going through”, Harry explained while helping himself to potatoes. “The Order is working nonstop trying to abolish it before it becomes instated. Second, you have nothing to worry about for a whole year. You turn nineteen in a few weeks. We’ll figure out a solution before this time next year.”
Hermione put her hands over her face and bit her lip, hard. She had a strong urge to scream, but that would probably be inappropriate.
“Exactly, when, is this law being put in motion? Exactly.”
“Wednesday, next week, I think” Ginny answered, mouth full of pie.
“Fuck”, Hermione put her head to the table. She wanted to cry, she was so tired. First losing Ron, then not being able to find her parents, and now this. Was she ever going to be able to relax? Could she not get one year at Hogwarts to only focus on her studies? Apparently not.
“Why are you so worried, Hermione?” Harry asked, finally looking concerned. “We’ll find a way, we always do. But you don’t need to worry about it right now. Like I said, the Order is on top of it.”
“Harry, I regularly used a time turner during third year” Hermione whispered furiously. “I’m older than I should be, and the ministry can detect that.”
“Right, but given the amount of time you turned back you still won’t be turning twenty for at least eight or nine months.”
“No, Harry. I turned twenty last month. I’m already twenty.”
“But that’s impossible”, Harry exclaimed, finally starting to show signs of the panic Hermione was feeling. “There’s no way you …”
“Harry, I know I told you I only went back to be in time for all my classes but … I lied, okay. I was under an enormous amount of stress; I studied basically non stop, you and Ron were barely speaking to me … it all became too much. And then I figured out something. I figured out how to go back further than just a few hours. So I did. I went back a week at first and snuck out of Hogwarts. Took some time off. But after awhile I started taking more time off and, it got out of hand. I kept track of all the time I gained, and my birthday is now July 27th. I’m twenty years old.”
Harry and Ginny had both forgotten about their meals and were staring at her with open mouths. she felt a blush creep up over her face. She started loading her plate with food just to avoid the stares she was getting.
“Merlin Hermione” Ginny exclaimed. “It’s like you’re living this double life as a rule breaking badass. What else have you not told us?”
A brief image of professor Snape thrusting in and out of her came to her mind but she quickly shoved the thought away, smiling slightly at Ginny.
“Nothing Ginny. And this was years ago. I was afraid to tell you then because I didn’t want to get in trouble, and now I just haven’t thought about it. Honestly. But this changes things. I have to tell McGonagall.”
“Yeah, and preferably tonight” Harry added seriously. If you don’t find anyone to marry, anyone can put a claim on you. And the ministry being the incompetent squibs they are, not all Death Eaters sit in Azkaban yet. We did mention Lucius Malfoy before and also, Draco Malfoy, who you will notice is sitting at the slytherin table over there.”
“What? Can this day get any worse?”
Severus Snape had been watching Granger since she stepped foot in the Great Hall. She on the other hand had been pointedly ignoring him. Good. He also noticed that Potter and the Weasley girl hadn’t glanced his way once since they arrived which was also good. It meant that she hadn’t told them of the little drunken mishap a few months prior, which probably meant that she hadn’t told anyone. But best of all was that there was no sign of Ronald Weasley. Snape had planned on getting that rat expelled anyway, but now he wouldn’t have to go through the hassle.
As he was watching Granger talking with her friends he had to admit that she had changed quite a bit over the summer. She had cut that bushy hair of hers shorter, and had somehow found a way to make it less bushy, which suited her very well. She also had quite an impressive tan which made her freckles more noticeable. He quite liked the changes he was seeing. It made her look older, and made him feel just a little bit less bad about having sex with such a young woman. He had been trying to tell himself all summer that Granger was born an old woman, but it never worked.
Potter had also changed, he couldn’t fail to notice. He looked more relaxed than Snape had seen him since he first started at Hogwarts eight years earlier, before knowing he had a horrible destiny. Snape couldn’t help but feel good for the boy, also knowing that Albus would have teased him to death if he had been alive.
Just as McGonagal was getting ready for her begining of term speech, Snape saw a change in Granger’s posture. She suddenly sat stiff as a board and didn’t seem to be listening at all to what her headmistress was saying. Also, she didn’t seem to be ignoring him anymore, but simply not thinking about him at all. What happened? Had Potter and Weasley said something?
After the speech she turned to her friends and they started whispering intently with each other. After a while both Potter and Weasley seemed horrified at something Granger had just said. Had she told them about what happened between them? But they weren’t even looking in his direction. So what else could she have told them?
“I hope you all enjoyed your feast”, McGonagal called over the sea of students and once again, the murmur died out. “Now a few reminders. The Forbidden Forest is called so for a reason. Still forbidden. And also, the heads of houses will begin to collect acceptance slips from legal guardians already next week. Since there was no visits to Hogsmeade last year the first visit will be early. Send owls to your parents if you don’t have the slips with you. Now all of you off to bed, except for Harry Potter and Hermione Granger. Please meet me up here.”
Harry and Hermione looked at each other with raised eyebrows. Ginny gently kissed Harry’s cheek and then disappeared in the chaos of students going to bed.
“You know I was really hoping to avoid being called to teachers all the time this year”, Harry mumbled to Hermione and she had to laugh. This was getting ridiculous. Could they never just have a normal year at Hogwarts? Surely they hadn’t managed to break any rules yet? The rule breaking had become second nature to them and Hermione wasn’t sure anymore.
Coming closer to the Head Table she finally, accidentally got eye contact with Snape. She immediately averted her gaze, face reddening even faster than normal because of her deep tan. She knew that it would happen eventually, but standing this close to him again after what happened made her realize that she was not prepared at all. Her mouth felt like sandpaper and her legs like gel.
“Mr Potter, miss Granger. Welcome back to Hogwarts.”
Headmistress McGonagall smiled warmly at them and opened her arms wide. Hermione stepped forward and hugged her mentor of the past eight years. Harry shortly did the same, feeling a bit awkward. Then Lupin came forward. He had just barely survived the war and had decided to take up his old job DADA teacher, after losing Tonks. He also had Teddy with him, and all the staff and some students had offered to help take care of him.
After greeting all the teachers it was only McGonagall, Snape and Lupin left. Suddenly Harry walked up to Snape and extended his hand.
“Professor Snape. I hope you had a good summer.” Snape shook his hand briefly.
“I did. Thank you.” Snape’s eyes briefly met Hermione and she blushed again.
Hermione suddenly felt all eyes in the room staring at her, and she realized that she was expected to walk up to Snape as well. She had greeted everyone else with a hug. Should she hug him? No, that felt to intimate. But on the other hand, they had already been as intimate with each other as two people can be. But Harry had only shook his hand, it would look weird if she hugged him. Right? Before she had a chance to second guess herself even more she walked up to him and extended her hand formally.
“Sir.”
“Miss Granger.”
Oh, Merlin she had forgotten how big his hands were. And his long fingers ....
She quickly retreated to standing next to Harry, hearing her own pulse loudly in her ears. Was she having a heart attack?
“I have an announcement to make”, McGonagall started happily, but Hermione, already being so nervous about Snape’s presence and the earlier information she had obtained, suddenly blurted everything out.
“I’m twenty and I broke the rules and I’m gonna have to get married and I think I’m having a heart attack.”
The room blurred and everything went black.
