Chapter 2
Draco Malfoy
Draco.... bloody..... Malfoy
Maybe she could act like she hadn't seen him, or at the least, that it was completely normal for him to be lingering at the entrance gate, at the exact time she was due to arrive. She'd have to make up her mind fast, as she was readily approaching his position.
The last time Hermione had seen him had been at his trial, she and Harry had both testified in his and his Mother's favour. However, she hadn't stayed to hear the details of the verdict, instead choosing to return to Grimmauld Place. Whilst Hermione was aware that Malfoy had avoided Azkaban, the exact details of his parole were not something that got mentioned much around her, apart from the term 'Good Behaviour'. The horrendous scar on her arm became suspiciously itchy, however she ignored the irritation, not wanting to draw attention to it. The feeling of eyes boring into her skull became something that couldn't be ignore any longer, as she looked up and made accidental eye contact. However instead of seeing his usual smirk and general air of confidence, Malfoy seemed unsure of her and how she would react to him.
Deciding to go out on a limb, Hermione decided to greet Malfoy as civilly as possible;
"Malfoy" she said nodding her head slightly
"Granger" he responded after a short pause. Surprisingly he turned to face her instead of turning away.
"McGonagall sent me to retrieve you," he continued, looking as if he would rather be anywhere but here at this moment, "the main entrance to the castle is currently under construction and isn't accessible. She was concerned you may not know where to go."
"Oh, no I guess I wouldn't have." She replied, shocked the new headmistress would send Malfoy, of all people.
At this, he started walking the grounds, towards what she assumed was the current entrance to the castle. They walked in silence, Hermione slightly behind Draco taking everything in. As they turned and reached a clearing, she couldn't hold in the gasp that left her mouth at the sight in front of her, what was once the astronomy tower, was now a staircase to nothingness. Draco must have realised she'd stopped, as he was beside her when he quietly remarked
"It's actually an improvement on what it was after the battle. The whole of the astronomy tower was in ruins, they're gradually building it up".
She was shocked to hear his voice so sincere and to be honest, so close to her. There was no malice there, if anything, regret lingered in his tone.
"Mmmmm," she replied "I briefly saw it before I left"
If she was honest with herself, it took almost all of her inner strength not to cry. Sometimes she had to compartmentalise the last few years, in particular the final battle, in her mind. Push it away into a box, that she could keep the lid very tightly shut on, as if it was a dream and she was a mere spectator, watching all the carnage unfold. She was sure if she saw a muggle psychologist, they would be quick to say she had post traumatic stress disorder, and has yet to truly deal with everything that had occurred. However, the thought of even tapping back into that time in her life, was daunting enough, let alone actually doing it.
'Enough' she thought, 'this is why you're here, time for you to have some you time, figure out who the hell you is now'.
And with that thought, she took and deep breath and continued towards to castle. Malfoy, whom had taken a few steps away from her whilst she was still gazing at the former tower, continued on also. He directed her towards a side entrance which she recalled using in first year, for their flying lessons.
"McGonagall should be this way,"
Malfoy said, signally Hermione down a corridor to their left. His surprisingly civil attitude to her would have usually been off putting, suspicious even, however Hermione was honestly just trying to process returning to the place she called home for so many years. They walked on in silence, up a few familiar staircases, however many usual entrances had magical blocks she noticed, obviously still under construction. This also explained the need for an escort, instead of just being told Professor McGonagall's location.
"Ah Miss Granger," The sound of her former Head of House and teacher brought a warming sensation and calmness Hermione didn't expect, "I see you found Mr. Malfoy at the entrance." At this she turned to her other former pupil.
"Mr. Malfoy, if you could please take over here. The new curse breakers have arrived, and need some assistance with removing some of the physical obstructions near these classrooms" she said, signally further down the corridor.
"Of course Headmistress" Malfoy responded. He turned to Hermione nodded, and proceeded to make his way down the corridor. Removing his outer robes as he went, Hermione was quietly shocked to see Draco Malfoy wearing muggle jeans, a checkered flannelette shirt and what looked like tradesman boots.
"This way Miss Granger", Headmistress McGonagall directed her "you will notice around the castle, anyone that is assisting in anyway must be dressed appropriately. Although we do have the aid of magic, there is still a substantial amount of debris and unstable surfaces about."
Hermione nodded, walking in comfortable silence with the headmistress, as they approached the all too familiar entrance to the headmistress' office.
"Humbug" McGonagall called to the gargoyle, still intact despite all the commotion around it, opening for the now Headmistress of Hogwarts.
