"Absolutely NOT!" Andromeda shouted at her mother. Narcissa hid just out of sight in the hallway outside her sister's room and listened as the two argued.
"Andromeda, you will absolutely do as the Dark Lord asks. Your father is depending on you to do the right thing," Druella Black glared at her impetuous daughter. Bellatrix had always been in trouble, but always in the name of the Dark Lord. Andromeda, on the other hand, had always been a rebel. She questioned everything the Dark Lord stood for and no matter how hard Druella and her husband Cygnus tried to keep her on the straight and narrow, she strayed. She rebelled against blood purity, she befriended mudbloods, she defended all beings' rights. She went against everything the Black family stood for and Druella was putting her foot down.
"No, Mother. I will not marry that old man Avery!" Andromeda shrieked, almost losing control of herself. "I don't believe in what Tom Riddle believes in and I won't marry that horrible old man. Nothing you say will change my mind," she screamed, eyes wild and hair askew. Druella stepped up to her and grabbed her by the arms.
"No, Andromeda. I don't think you understand. You will marry anyone the Dark Lord says, Avery or otherwise. You will bear his children and you will raise those children as purebloods. This liberal nonsense you've been spouting stops now," Druella shouted in her daughter's face and started shaking her. "Now!" she screamed, shaking Andromeda as hard as she could.
"Mummy! Stop!" Narcissa yelled running into the room. She tried to pry her mother's hands off of her sister's arms but Druella was enraged. She turned and slapped Narcissa.
"Get out, Narcissa, this doesn't affect you," Druella yelled. Narcissa, only twelve years old, and having never seen her mother so furious before, backed from the room. She had always been closer to her father anyway. She would get him and he would help Andromeda.
Narcissa ran to her father's den and found him there deep in conversation with Lord Voldemort. Narcissa stopped so fast she slid across the polished floor on her socks before she came to a complete stop.
"Father, I'm so sorry to interrupt," she said suddenly aware of her situation. She immediately burst into tears. Cygnus got up and hugged his daughter, rolling his eyes over his shoulder at the Dark Lord.
"What is the matter, darling daughter?" he asked her, petting her long blonde hair down softly.
"It's Andromeda, Daddy, Mummy is going to kill her!" Narcissa wailed. Cygnus pulled away, holding Narcissa by the arms.
"Where are they?" he asked urgently.
"Andromeda's room," Narcissa said between sobs. Cygnus let her go and ran for his middle daughter's room.
"I'm sorry, my Lord," Narcissa sniffed and bowed toward Lord Voldemort.
"You've done nothing wrong Narcissa," he said handing her a tissue. "Unless you believe the nonsense your sister spreads, that is," he said, now positioned to stare into her eyes. She wondered if he could see her soul. It was uncomfortable, but then she had such a wonderful feeling suddenly. Like Lord Voldemort had made her feel better in her brain. She smiled gently.
"No, my Lord. I believe in you," she said confident in her beliefs and in the man in front of her. Although he scared her, she ardently admired him. She understood why Andromeda didn't want to marry that Avery guy, though. He was Lord Voldemort's age! For Bella to marry Rodolphus was one thing, she was older and acted more like an adult anyway. But for Andromeda it was just gross...and what if Lord Voldemort wanted her to marry some old man? She mentally pictured the Dark Lord's inner circle. She felt the tears welling up in her eyes.
"What is it young lady?" Lord Voldemort asked sharply as the first tear ran down her face. Narcissa took his hand in hers and bowed down on one knee in reverence.
"I trust you to make the right decisions regarding my future, my Lord, but please don't make me marry an old man," she pleaded, looking him in the eye. She hoped by planting the seed now, she had a hope for a younger, more attractive husband. The Dark Lord laughed.
"You have nothing to worry about, young lady, for you are correct to place your trust in me," he said, assisting her to her feet. "Go, your sister will need your comfort," he said gesturing toward the door. Narcissa scampered off to the door without a word. She looked over her shoulder and smiled shyly at the Dark Lord and then ran down the hall.
"I will have none of this nonsense," Cygnus exploded in fury at his daughter. "It is three weeks before your wedding and you are not backing out," he screamed angrily. "I spent thousands of galleons on this wedding and it connects two old and revered wizarding families," he concluded, his stare practically boring holes into Andromeda's.
"You can't make me do it," Andromeda wailed. She pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs. She swayed slightly and the occasional sob racked her body. "I won't marry him. I'm going to marry who I want," she said defiantly, then started crying again.
"I suppose you mean that mudblood from Hufflepuff you've been running around with," Druella said cruelly.
"Stop using that word!" Andromeda screamed. "And for your information, his love comes without conditions, without strings. Not like you and Daddy. You always expect something from me. You don't love me for me, but because of what I can do for you," she looked defiantly from one parent to the other.
"We will disown you, Andromeda. You will have no where to live, no money, no family name to fall back on. Any children you have will not inherit one knut. We won't take in your half breed children when you inevitably become destitute with your mudblood disgrace!" Druella screamed shaking Andromeda by the arms again.
"Your mother is correct, young lady. I will not tolerate a disrespectful ingrate living under my roof. You will prepare yourself to marry the Avery man, you will correct your attitude while you are still living here, and you will treat your mother and father with respect," Cygnus added quietly, fury brewing under the surface.
"I won't," Andromeda said in a challenge to her father. He raised his hand as if to slap her with the back of his hand. She flinched and suddenly Narcissa jumped in front of her.
"No!" Narcissa yelled. "No, Daddy, don't hit Andi," she pleaded. Cygnus stopped with a confused look on his face.
"This is none of your concern, Narcissa," Druella hissed, pulling Narcissa out of the way. "Go to your room," she demanded, pushing Narcissa in the back toward the door.
"But..." she said, unsure what to do. She wanted to help Andromeda, but her parents wanted her out. She walked slowly toward the door, as slow as she could muster.
"GO!" her parents shouted in unison.
Narcissa ran to her room without looking back. She slammed her door for extra effect to show how unfair their decision had been, but then didn't know what to do. She tried to listen to see if she could hear anything. Occasionally one shout was louder than the rest but she couldn't make anything out. She wondered if she could sneak up to the second floor and listen from above. Before she formulated her escape plan, she fell asleep.
"Cissy, wake up," a hand shook her shoulder lightly. It was very dark, the middle of the night. Narcissa rubbed her eyes and waited for them to adjust to the low light.
"Andi, are you leaving?" Narcissa saw her sister standing with a suitcase.
"Shush," Andromeda said holding a finger to her lips. "Yes, I'm going to my friend Leticia's house for now, and I'm going to marry Ted on my birthday in three weeks. Daddy cut me off. Told me to get out. I'm going and I'll never be back, Cissy," Andromeda pulled her sister into a hug. Narcissa started to cry.
"You can't go," she said in between sobs. "I won't let you. I will miss you too much," she wailed. Andromeda pet her hair, much like their father had earlier.
"I have to go. I can't stay here. I won't marry that man. If I leave, I have a chance at a normal life. If you're smart, you will get out of here, too. Don't let them brainwash you anymore!" Andromeda held Narcissa tight. "Don't let Lord Voldemort rule over you, spouting ignorance and bigotry. Make decisions for yourself, Cissy. Don't let things happen to you, make things happen," Andromeda let go. Cissy stopped crying.
"I won't say anything," Narcissa said finally. She would let her sister leave. She didn't know exactly why she changed her mind. Love, she supposed. She loved her sister. And as much as she tried, she didn't love Lord Voldemort.
