CHAPTER 2 – GIRL THROWING FLAMES
A knock sounded on Hermione’s bedroom door. She groaned then sighed in acquiescence. She got out of bed, swiped her face to remove the tears, and went to the door. She unlocked it and grabbed the handle but hesitated.
“It’s me, Hermione,” Ginny said softly.
Hermione flung the door open, grabbed Ginny before she could protest, then shut and locked the door again. Hermione attacked her with a tight hug. Ginny hugged her back.
“I’m so sorry Ginny!” she cried.
“Hey now,” Ginny cooed. “It’s alright Mione.”
Hermione pulled back to look at her friend. “Ron...”
“Don’t even say his name!” Ginny growled, and Hermione was taken aback. “He’s dead to me.”
Hermione nodded in agreement. “How’s your mum and brothers?”
“Mum’s a wreck,” Ginny plopped down on the bed. “She lost two sons and a husband tonight...”
Hermione gaped. “Arthur?”
“You didn’t know?”
“No, I—I’m sorry,” Hermione said, fresh tears falling down her cheeks. “How did it—how did he—”
Ginny stared at her with sad eyes and realization struck Hermione.
“He didn’t!” Hermione clenched her fists.
“He used the curse.”
Hermione sat down beside Ginny on the bed. Her anger and hatred toward Ron, her deep sorrow over Harry, and now knowing that Ron had killed his own father—it was too much.
She grabbed Ginny’s hand and kissed the back of it. “He’s going to pay for what he’s done.”
Ginny turned slightly to face her. “Did you really believe we turned our backs on Harry and were helping my brother?”
Hermione looked up in frustration. She shook her head and said, “I didn’t want to believe it, but I was so consumed by rage. Draco got into my head, I’ll admit...”
“Well,” Ginny sighed. “My git of a brother will never show his face here again because if he did—”
A loud bang followed by a scream from below echoed throughout the flat. Hermione and Ginny stood, drawing their wands. They rushed out the bedroom door, down the hall, and hurried down the stairs. The uproar got louder as they got closer to the living room. Hermione and Ginny stopped dead in their tracks on the second floor landing when they saw Ron face to face with Mrs. Weasley, George, and Fred. Mad-eye and Remus stood off to the side. There was a strange glowing barrier around Ron.
“No way.” Ginny growled.
Hermione stomped down the last flight of stairs onto the main floor and hurled herself toward Ron. She stopped inches from the barrier extending her wand.
“Hermione!” Mrs. Weasley cried.
“Let her be!” Mad-eye said, watching Ron carefully. His fake eye flickered around.
“You’re an idiot for coming back here!” Hermione growled.
“Mione—” Ron began softly.
“Don’t call me that!” She roared.
“I can explain!"
“I’m afraid you won’t be able to talk yourself out of this one, Ronald.”
“I was under the Imperius curse!” Ron fought.
“He’s lying!"
Everyone turned their heads to the second floor landing where Draco, Severus, Minerva, and Kingsley just exited the library. They all scowled at Ron.
“He’s lying,” Draco repeated as he descended the stairs and approached Hermione. “That barrier was cast by the Dark Lord himself. It’s impenetrable. If you cast a spell, it’ll rebound.”
Draco stepped closer to her. She gasped when he put his warm hand on top of her own, making her lower her wand.
“He’s right here,” Hermione said, angry tears pooling from her eyes. “He’s right here!"
“I know,” Draco said softly. Him and Hermione stared at each other in understanding for the first time.
“Draco’s correct,” Severus said, descending the staircase to stand next to them. “This is a protective shield created by the Dark Lord, and only he can release it. Mr. Weasley isn’t under the Imperius curse...nor is he a prisoner. The shield only works if one acts...upon their own will."
“Why are you here?” Kingsley asked. “What’s your purpose?”
Ron smiled wickedly, “To send a message.”
Hermione gritted her teeth. Her magic crackled around her. Draco grabbed her hand, and she was so focused on Ron, she didn’t notice. But Ron definitely noticed, and his smile faded.
“Looks like the Mudblood found a new Pureblood to play with,” Ron spat, and there were several gasps from the others.
“You dare call her that in front of her family!” Draco snarled, and pushed Hermione behind him protectively.
She stumbled and almost fell but was steadied by Severus who looked at her with smoldering eyes. She blushed and stepped away. Severus turned his attention back to Draco and Ron.
“You mean my family,” Ron hissed looking at his siblings and mother.
“No, dear, boy,” Mrs. Weasley said with a shaky voice. “You no longer have a family.”
Ron seethed but ignored her, saying, “Well there’s nothing you lot can do, now is there.” Ron snorted. “Harry is dead. The War is over. Either submit and join him or die. He's giving you a week to choose.”
With that said, Ron turned and hurried to leave. But before he reached the door, the shield protecting him vanished. He didn’t notice, but the entire room certainly did, especially Hermione.
She moved around Draco with lightning speed and raised her wand, pointing it directly at Ron’s back.
“Hermione, no!” multiple people shouted at once.
Severus and Draco went after her and tried to stop her. But it was too late as she hissed the words, “Avada Kedavra!” A blinding jet of green light shot powerfully from her wand, hitting a startled Ron in the chest as he turned around. The room was silent as his body landed with a thud, his hollow eyes staring up at the ceiling.
Hermione stood tall, staring at his lifeless form. She was surprised to find she felt nothing for her once best friend. He had done everything possible to destroy their friendship and her love for him. The wizard who not only betrayed his friends and family by turning his back on the Order and delivering Harry to Lord Voldemort, but who also killed his own father. No, Hermione felt no remorse for the red-haired, blue-eyed stranger on the floor. She realized she probably never knew the real him at all.
Hermione slowly turned around to face her friends and family. Nobody approached her. She looked at Draco first. His eyes were swimming with mixed emotions of pride and sorrow.
She shifted to Ginny, who seemed relieved. Hermione knew Ginny would’ve killed Ron if she had failed to do so.
Then Hermione caught Mrs. Weasley’s watery eyes but looked away guiltily to Remus who wasn’t looking at her at all, but glaring at Draco, which was curious.
Minerva and Kingsley appeared rather frightened by Hermione. Kingsley didn’t matter to her, but Hermione didn’t like seeing the powerful witch she looked up to afraid of her.
And Mad-eye seemed pleased, which probably wasn’t good.
And Fred and George were off to the side, discussing something in hushed whispers, then she saw George slide Fred five galleons, and she wanted to smile, but knew it would be inappropriate.
Finally she met the dark, penetrating eyes of the one person whose opinion and judgement mattered to her most of all: Severus. His pale face was stoic as usual, but his eyes told a different tale.
She looked down at her feet and inhaled a sharp breath. She was about to speak but, before she could, Kingsley descended the stairs saying, “Hermione Jean Granger, you’re under arrest for the use of an Unforgivable and the murder of Ronald Billius Weasley.”
“What! You can’t arrest her!” Ginny cried and moved to block Kingsley.
“Kingsley!” Minerva cried in equal outrage. “Surely you’re not going to arrest the girl! After all that’s occurred tonight!”
“I’m afraid I have no choice,” Kingsley looked down at Ginny and Hermione sadly. “Step aside, Ms. Weasley, or I’ll have to arrest you for interfering with Auror business.”
“Ginerva!” Mrs. Weasley bit out, then added pleadingly, “Come here at once.”
Ginny glared at her mother and shook her head. She crossed her arms stubbornly and said, “Arrest me then, Kingsley.”
Kingsley sighed, “Very well.”
“This is madness!” Minerva and Mrs. Weasley shouted at once.
“Yes,” Severus drawled, meeting Hermione’s eyes. “I quite agree.”
Hermione looked away from him her heart constricting painfully. Kingsley took their wands and magically cuffed them. In that moment, an idea popped in Hermione's head.
“Kingsley!” Hermione said louder than necessary and everyone blinked at her. She cleared her throat. “I’d like my wand to be held in Severus’ custody.”
Severus scowled but said, “Certainly, Miss Granger.”
Hermione refused to meet his eyes. Instead, she glanced over at a confused Ginny. Hermione nudged her head toward Draco, trying to signal to Ginny what to do. Ginny frowned but turned her head slowly to look at the blonde wizard. Draco tilted his head inquisitively in their direction. Understanding finally lit Ginny’s face and Ginny smiled at Hermione.
“Kingsley!” Ginny said louder than Hermione had making several people, including Kingsley, jump. Hermione snuffed a laugh. “I’d like my wand to be held in Draco’s custody, please.”
“What?” Draco growled. “Why in Merlin’s name would you do that?”
“Can they even do that?” Fred and George said with amusement.
“Yes,” Kingsley answered in annoyance. “It’s a rare occurrence, but the Ministry allows any witch or wizard under arrest to leave their wand in the custody of another if they so wish.”
“Interesting,” Mrs. Weasley said. “I had no idea that was a possibility!"
"Not many people do, Molly." Remus said. "The Ministry, I'm positive, would like to keep it that way."
There was a moment of silence as Kingsley glared at Remus then handed Hermione’s wand to Severus and Ginny’s wand to Draco. Suddenly, sparks of different colors flew from the tips of their wands and magic swirled around the two wizards. Everybody in the room shivered at the magic and watched in awe. The two wizards glared at each other, then at Hermione and Ginny.
“Are you sure you want to do this Kingsley?” Remus said, ignoring what happened.
“Of course he does! Always by the book! Never looking the other way! Especially when a powerful young witch beats him to the punch, takes care of a nasty problem.” Mad-eye roared and limped over to him. “Isn’t that right, Kingsley?”
“Watch it, Moody,” Kingsley growled. “Or I’ll take you in too.”
Mad-eye scoffed and said, “Bloody hell take us all in!” then added, “But no need. I’ll see my damned self out—Granger, Weasley.” He nodded at the young women before limping away. He stepped over Ron’s body to get to the front door then, once outside, disapparated with a loud crack.
Hermione and Ginny shared a small smile, then studied Severus and Draco who shared a dark look.
“Hermione, Ginny,” Kingsley said and escorted them toward the door.
They each stepped over Ron’s body. Ginny muttered, “I’ll never forgive you,” before walking out the door ahead of Hermione.
“What she said,” Hermione agreed and joined Ginny and Kingsley on the porch.
Kingsley grabbed both of their arms, and Hermione felt a familiar uncomfortable tug as they disapparated to Azkaban.
