Chapter 2
~Magic Most Ancient~
As Severus flew by the day’s memories, Pansy’s mind seemed like an open book. He knew better than anyone, though, that looks could be deceiving. Pansy had not been around the Dark Lord for almost a year, so he knew he would have to look much deeper if he was going to find anything akin to a mental block. He could feel the fear in her mind; could feel her trembling like a leaf at what he might find. He pushed deeper.
Pansy’s memories flew by at almost lightspeed. The farther into the recess of her mind Severus went, the faster the memories flew; then he found what he was looking for. The last time that Pansy and the Dark Lord were together. He slowed down to watch the memories. He watched as Pansy fell asleep beside the Dark Lord in what would become their marital bed. He watched as the Dark Lord studied her and brushed her hair behind her ear as she slumbered. And Severus watched as the Dark Lord put his wand to her temple and whispered the spell that put the mental trace in her mind that she feared she had.
Severus inwardly sighed. Any action that he would take to remove the mental trace would instantly alert the Dark Lord. Ideas raced through his mind as to what he could do to help Pansy. Then something came to him. He may not be able to remove the trace….but he could circumvent the trace. He knew of a spell long forgotten by others that could copy the trace exactly, put it in her short-term memory banks, and render the original trace inert, but would still be connected to the Dark Lord. He slowly exited Pansy’s mind.
“Miss Parkinson, you were right,” Severus sighed. “You do have a mental trace on you. The Dark Lord put it on you the last night you two were together.”
Pansy’s head fell to her chest as her shoulders started shaking with silent sobs. It’s hopeless, she thought to herself. There’s no way I’ll ever be free. She felt Severus put his hands on her shoulders as he started to speak again.
“Pansy,” he said gently, looking down at her. “There is something that I can do, though.”
“I’ll do anything!” she exclaimed, raising her head so quickly that Severus was startled.
“I can’t remove the trace,” Severus started to explain. “Any attempts to tamper with it would alert him immediately. What I can do, however, is copy the trace and put the copy in your short-term memory. That trace would then be connected to the Dark Lord, rendering the original inert.”
“Let’s do it!” Pansy shouted, jumping off of her stool. Dread started to fill her as she noticed Severus start to hesitate. “What?”
“Pansy, the spell that I’m referring to is magic so ancient, it hasn’t been performed in over a thousand years,” Severus replied, walking back around his desk. “There is absolutely no way I would attempt to perform it without a healer or nurse here to supervise both of our conditions. Madam Pomfrey would have my head if I didn’t include her...since I assume you don’t want to go to St. Mungo’s.”
“His people control St. Mungo’s,” she whispered, shaking her head violently “There’s no way I would be caught dead there.”
“There are only two options, then: the infirmary or my office,” Snape said, folding his hands together.
“Too many people could come into the infirmary while the spell is being performed,” Pansy whispered, tears streaming down her cheeks. Her Slytherin pride wouldn’t let her sob like a baby in front of her head of house, but this was the most emotional she had ever felt in her life. “I’d rather maintain as much privacy as possible during that time.”
“I understand, Miss Parkinson,” Snape replied, appearing to be deep in thought. He turned around to give Pansy a few moments to herself. He whispered a charm and whispered a few words to what he conjured. Pansy looked up as a bright flash of silver leapt through the door. Her face was now clear of tears.
“What was that?” Pansy asked curiously while looking at the door.
“I was sending a Patronus to Madam Pomfrey to request her presence here,” Severus explained, stowing away his wand until he needed it again. “She’ll be here in a few minutes to monitor us while I perform the spell.”
The two of them sat in silence while waiting for the nurse. Snape was mentally going through the spell and motions he had long ago learned. He had never performed the spell before and he wanted everything to go as perfectly as possible. Though it’s probable I might just cause brain death, he thought to himself. He shook his head to clear the doubts from his brain. No, it will work, he thought passionately. It has to!
The classroom door creaked as it opened and Madam Pomfrey came striding into the room. Severus inwardly groaned when he saw Headmistress Minerva McGonagall right behind her.
“I thought I asked for you alone,” he hissed to the nurse, his eyes narrowing.
“You may have asked only for Madam Pomfrey,” Minerva clucked at the tone of his voice, giving Severus a pointed look. “But as I am the Headmistress of this school, and I know exactly which spell you will be using, I will oversee everything.”
Severus sighed, knowing it was useless to argue with her. He flicked his wand and moved all the tables and chairs to the sides of the room. Minerva conjured a soft bed for Pansy and a comfortable chair for Severus to use while he performed the spell. The mood in the room was grim. No one knew if the spell would work. They all hoped it would, of course, but none of them knew.
“Will this have any effect on the baby?” Pansy’s whispered plea echoed in the now empty classroom. Minerva looked up at her in surprise. She hadn’t known before that moment that Pansy was with child.
“There are no risks to the child,” Poppy replied soothingly, patting Pansy’s arm. Those simple words eased Pansy’s growing histeria.
“All the preparations are complete,” Minerva said quietly after about ten minutes. Severus, Poppy, and Pansy all looked to her in apprehension, then to each other. They knew they were all thinking the same thing. Pansy laid back to get as comfortable as she could and closed her eyes. Minerva took one hand of her hands, Severus took the other. Severus hesitated when he took out his wand.
“Are you sure you want to try this?” he asked Pansy.
“Yes,” Pansy replied quickly. She was feeling her panic starting to rise, though she was trying to keep her breathing as even as possible. She felt the two professors gripping her hands.
Minerva nodded at Severus. It was time. Severus pointed his wand at Pansy’s head. He swished and flicked his wand in a never-before-seen way and slowly and clearly said the words:
“Effingo mentis vestigium!”
Red, blue, yellow, green, silver, and gold light strands filled the room. The colors flipped, stretched, and shrank as they whirled around the trio in and around the bed. The colors would combine, then split apart in waves of beautiful motion. One by one, the pearlescent strands slowly entered Pansy’s right temple. With each strand that disappeared, her head would momentarily glow that color. When the color dissipated, the next one would enter her temple. When all six colors had disappeared, Pansy’s head momentarily glowed a flashingly blind white before all light finally diminished.
Severus’s brow glistened with sweat as did Minerva’s but they both knew the job was only half done. Severus looked at Minerva, his eyes pleading the words his mouth couldn’t say. Minerva nodded and lifted her wand.
“Ulla mentis reponere!”
A thick rope of gold light erupted from Minerva’s wand and wrapped around Pansy’s head. It continued to wrap around until her head looked like it was made of gold. The sight remained for several minutes until the gold disappeared in a flash of light. They all sat still for several minutes after. The spell was complete.
But had it worked?
