Chapter 2
After days of frustrating research in the library - with Ron commenting that he was turning into Hermione - Harry finally found out about a rare species of winter lily that blooms in dark, damp places, like the Forbidden Forest. After his detention in the forest following the Norbert incident, he wasn’t too keen on going back there, but he had decided that he would get it, and Gryffindors don’t break promises.
So armed with his wand and covered in his invisibility cloak, Harry carefully wandered out of the castle, painfully aware of the footprints he was leaving in the snow. He had to stop every now and then to listen to the sounds, wondering if someone was awake or if it was just his heartbeat which seemed to be too loud for his liking.
He softly muttered “Lumos,” after he entered the forest, hoping that this time, he won’t meet any unicorn-blood-sucking creatures like before. The forest was darker than he remembered and smelled of fresh snow and something sweet. He kept tripping over upturned roots, got his cloak tangled in some branches, and stepped on something wet and slimy.
After a few hours of what felt like an obstacle course, Harry was ready to give up. Maybe it wasn’t here after all. He turned around, slipped on the icy path, and fell head first onto a muddy patch of snow. And there, right in front of his eyes, was a bunch of winter lilies, which appeared to be slowly moving away from him. He immediately grabbed and hid them under his robes, got up, and ran back to the castle, making sure to clear his footprints.
He found them!
Back in his dorm room, Harry quietly slipped into his pyjamas after cleaning up and tending to his cuts and bruises. He put the lilies in a jar of water on his nightstand and fell into a peaceful sleep, happy that he was able to find them right before Snape’s birthday.
Harry just realized how ridiculous the whole thing looked like: him waiting for Snape with a flower in his hand. A few Slytherins sniggered at him, while others gave him odd looks. Harry was about to run away when the door to the dungeons finally opened and Hermione gave him a slight, encouraging nudge. Trembling, he walked up to the man who didn’t realize he was there.
“Um-”
Snape quickly turned around at the voice.
“Uh… Happy birthday, professor,” Harry said softly, feeling very embarrassed, as he held out the white, beautiful lily.
When the flower was not taken from his hand, Harry looked up, confused, and saw black, resentful eyes staring back at him. “What is this nonsense, Mr. Potter?!” Snape snatched the flower from him angrily. Harry stepped back, afraid.
“I just- I-”
“Do you think this is funny?” Snape asked in a low, calm voice. He had regained his composure very quickly.
Harry unconsciously trembled, scared of the man in front of him. He shook his head and stared at the floor, fidgeting with his robes.
“Care to explain?”
After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, Harry finally answered in a very small voice, “I… I don’t want you to hate me. And I thought that… that you’d like a birthday present,”
“Detention for going into the Forbidden Forest, Mr. Potter,” was Snape’s reply before he walked away, his footsteps echoing in the nearly empty hall.
Harry returned to his friends, dejected. He didn’t expect Snape to be grateful for the present of course, but he certainly hadn’t expected to be given detention in return.
“He’s horrible,” Ron muttered while Hermione patted Harry’s back comfortingly.
He is, Harry agreed bitterly.
Snape paced the length of his office, glancing at the white lily on his table from time to time. He was very surprised when the boy had approached him and gave him the flower, just like Lily Evans did years ago. It was even the same type of lily!
For a moment, he didn’t see Harry. He saw young Lily instead, wishing him a happy birthday with that lovely smile and vibrant green eyes of hers. Then the boy looked up, and all Snape could see was James. Laughing at him. Taunting him.
He felt the familiar feeling of anger surging through him. Harry must’ve known about his past with Lily and was making fun of him. He was sure of it.
Furious, he picked up the flower on his table and was about to throw it into the fire when he remembered something: Harry’s hands and chin were covered in cuts. Snape knew this particular lily only blooms in dark, damp places such as the Forbidden Forest, and it has a sweet smell that confuses anyone who smells it, a defence mechanism of sorts. It must have taken Harry a long time to be able to find one.
Fine, Snape put the flower in a tall vase of water and brought it to his private quarters, this is for Lily. Not Potter.
Harry knocked on the door at 7 o’clock sharp. He was still hurt by Snape’s earlier reaction and was not looking forward to spending two hours alone with him.
“Enter,”
Harry slowly pushed the heavy door open and slipped into Snape’s office. It was gloomy and dimly-lit, the walls lined with large shelves of jars filled with things Harry didn’t want to know about. Snape was sitting at his desk, grading essays. At least the fire was on.
“Write an essay on why your behaviour was not appropriate,” Snape instructed, not looking up from his stack of parchments. Harry didn’t feel like what he did was inappropriate, but he sat down nonetheless, took out his parchment and quill, and began writing. Halfway through, when he was stuck on what to write next, he began looking around the room. There was no sign of the lily anywhere. Harry continued his essay slowly, crestfallen.
Uncle Vernon was right. He was nothing but a burden.
At least I have my friends.
