Hermione felt much more comfortable with Malfoy at work after they had had their coffee and chat at the weekend. They had caught up on life after Hogwarts. Hermione told him about work and how things hadn’t really worked out with Ron, and Malfoy had told her that though he had been engaged to Astoria Greengrass after school, once the money and manor were gone, so was she.
He said he had gone to stay with his parents for a while but realised that he needed to do something for himself. He had tried to get into the ministry to move up and move on, but had been stuck for the last three years. ‘So thank you,’ he had said. ‘For being the first person to actually take me seriously.’
On Thursday evening, she was alone in the office as she had stayed late to work on some funding requests. She was about to close up when she saw a light on in the research room. She let herself in and went to turn the light off when she saw a folder on Malfoy’s desk that had ‘Dumfries Sanctuary’ written on it.
Instantly curious, she sat down and opened the folder up. She could not think of any projects that they had been working on that were in Scotland, so what was this? She perused the parchments quickly and saw something about a reserve for native British Dragons when a voice behind her said, ‘What are you doing, Granger?’
She sat up in shock and turned sheepishly around to see Malfoy standing in the doorway with a cup of tea in his hand. ‘I didn’t realise you were still here,’ she said. ‘I just came in to turn the light off.’
He walked over to her and nodded down at the folder. ‘What do you think?’
Hermione stammered, ‘I didn’t know you were working on this.’ It wasn’t one of the funded projects on their list.
‘Just on my own time,’ he defended lightly. He sat down next to her and started showing her the information that he had collated. ‘There’s a wizard in Dumfries, he’s the last of a line and has a load of property that he wants to donate to a good cause. He’s accepting proposals until the end of next week,’ Malfoy was speaking enthusiastically. ‘And I know that there is the Romanian reserve, which is fine for the Hungarian Horntails and Norwegian Ridgebacks as the climate there is much more extreme, but for species native to Britain like the Welsh Green and the Hebridean Black, where the climate is much more temperate, a reserve here would be better for their health…’
They talked for a while and Hermione finally said, ‘Malfoy, this is a fantastic idea.’ Her face screwed up in annoyance. ‘Unfortunately, I can’t spare any of your funded hours on this, and I don’t have time during work to help you with the proposal.’
His eyebrows raised at this. ‘I’m going to help you,’ she said as an answer to his unasked question. ‘This project needs to happen, but I can’t get anything through the department before next week. Do you have time tomorrow after work? We could go to my flat and work on the proposal together. I have a few books on the Romanian Reserve and know what buzzwords these kinds of people are looking for. If we can secure the land, then we can put it forward for funding.’
He smiled and said, ‘That would be great, Granger.’

Draco felt a bit odd as he walked up the three flights of stairs to the address that Granger had given him to her flat. He didn’t think that he would ever be visiting Hermione Granger’s flat. He knocked on the door and she opened it a few moments later to let him in. ‘Come in,’ she said.
He had a quick look around. Granger had already set up a workstation in her living room for them to get to work. The room was set up with two sofas perpendicular to each other with one facing the television, which was against a wall that had a door that he assumed led to the bedroom. Behind this sofa was an open plan kitchen. In the middle of the sofas there were two coffee tables and she already had books about the Romanian Reserve open on one of them and some parchment and quills on the other.
He was pleased that she was so excited about helping him with this. He really hadn’t been sure where to start with the proposal and she had done these loads of times before for other projects, so he was actually glad that she had been stooping about his desk last night.
They talked and worked through it for hours, drafting and then re-drafting and then going over that again. By 9pm, Granger seemed like she was getting a bit frustrated at some of the wording. ‘Maybe we should leave it for tonight?’ Draco said.
She looked up at him. ‘I think that might be best. I really want to get this away by Monday though, so maybe we can meet up again on Sunday to finish it?’
There was a sudden knock at the door and Granger looked up in confusion. She walked over to the door and looked through the peephole. She visibly relaxed and opened the door. A broad-shouldered, red-headed man that Draco had never met before walked into the flat, ‘Evening, love,’ he said, bending to give Granger a quick kiss on the mouth.
‘I thought you weren’t coming until tomorrow,’ she said.
‘I finished up early,’ he said with a shrug. Then he looked up and saw Draco sitting on one of the sofas in the living room. ‘Uh, hello?’ he said.
Granger jumped a bit. ‘Sorry!’ she said. ‘Charlie, this is Draco Malfoy. We work together. We were just going over a proposal for a new project. Malfoy, this is Charlie Weasley, Ron’s older brother. He works at the Romanian Dragon reserve.’ They both nodded at each other, recognizing the other’s name.
‘We were just finishing up anyways, weren’t we Malfoy,’ Granger said, and he took that as his cue to leave.
‘Yes, we were,’ he said, gathering some of the paperwork. He grabbed one of the books and said, ‘Mind if I take this for some reading?’ and she nodded.
When he was outside the door of the flat, he had enough time to process the information that he had just received. He hadn’t realized that Granger had been seeing anyone, but Draco actually found himself getting angry when he thought about where Granger’s boyfriend worked. Was that the only reason that she had been so interested and wanted to work on this project with him? Was she only trying to help open a reserve in Scotland so that her boyfriend could live closer instead of in Romania?
He had actually thought that he had done something good for once and that it was a good idea, but now he knew that she had only praised its merits because of her boyfriend.
With an annoyed sigh, he apparated back to his flat.
