A/N: Thanks so much to everyone for the positive response on this. Sorry this chapter is a bit short as well, but the next one will be longer. I will also try to have the next chapter of 'Insatiable' posted tomorrow. 😊
One Week Previous
‘Thanks for coming to see me, Hermione,’ Harry said, letting her into Number 12.
She smiled as she walked through the door. ‘We haven’t had a proper night in a while, and I just wanted to make sure that you were doing okay, you know?’
He smiled wryly and led her to the study. ‘You mean with Ginny leaving?’ he asked.
She turned to look at him. ‘Yes,’ she said. ‘I can’t imagine what you’re going through.’
Harry shrugged nonchalantly as Hermione made herself comfortable in a big cushy armchair. Harry opened a glass cabinet and tipped a bottle out, tilting it in her direction.
‘A fine selection, Mr Potter,’ she said with a smile, and he brought out two crystal tumblers to pour them a dram each.
‘Too much Firewhisky in this world, not enough proper whisky,’ he said, handing Hermione hers.
‘I love a good Rioja Cask,’ she said, after taking a couple deep smells and then a sip. ‘So, how are you doing?’
Harry looked down. ‘I’m actually okay,’ he said. ‘I’m a bit lonely, but honestly, things weren’t going so well at the end and I think it was for the best.’
‘What was wrong?’ she asked, bending forward slightly in interest.
He looked back up at her. ‘I don’t know,’ he said. ‘She wanted to get married and have kids and—I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. It just felt…wrong.’
Hermione nodded. ‘Like she should have been the one,’ she said and he nodded. ‘Well, you stuck with it a lot longer than I did.’
Harry snorted. ‘Yeah, at least I didn’t leave her high and dry in Australia.’
Hermione gave a frown. ‘I—I couldn’t help it. I wasn’t going to lie about how I felt. Plus, it's not like he had a hard time moving on.’
‘When did you know?’ he asked.
‘It was strange,’ she said. ‘Because I thought I loved him. He even came with me to Australia to help track down my parents to bring them back here, but then one day, about a month after the Battle, I just—fell out of love with him. I woke up and looked into his face and just knew that he wasn’t who I was supposed to be with.’
Harry snorted again. ‘So, you chose Draco sodding Malfoy instead?’ he asked with a grin.
She gave him that raised motherly eyebrow of disapproval. ‘Yes,’ she said. ‘It was like the opposite of with Ron. I was at that Charity Fundraiser and when he walked up and we looked at each other, it just felt—right.’
‘Look, I don’t really like the guy,’ Harry said, in what was a vast understatement. ‘But I put up with him for you because anyone can see how much he adores you.’ Hermione smiled at this. ‘Like borderline obsessed,’ he added sardonically.
Hermione laughed. ‘He can be a bit intense sometimes,’ she said, but she had that far away smile on her face that Harry could only be jealous of—a look of someone completely and utterly in love.
They fell into a comfortable silence while they had a few more sips from their whisky glasses. ‘So did you hear that Ron and Rebecca are expecting another baby?’ he asked.
Hermione looked up at this. ‘No, I hadn’t heard that.’
‘Yeah,’ he said. ‘Sent me an owl a couple days ago. He said he’s going to try to make it back here from Australia over Christmas to see everyone.’
Hermione gave a nod and a forced smile and then looked down. When she looked back up at him a few moments later, she had tears shining in her eyes. ‘What’s wrong?’ he asked, trying to figure out what he had said to make her suddenly start crying.
‘I think there’s something wrong with me,’ she said, her voice breaking on the last word.
Harry got out of his chair and sat next to her to pull her into his arms. ‘What do you mean?’ he asked.
She sobbed a few times and then looked up at him. ‘We’ve been trying,’ she said. ‘Draco and I have, for a baby.’
Harry hugged her tighter. ‘There’s nothing wrong with you, Hermione,’ he said.
‘But there must be,’ she said through her tears. ‘It’s been two years and I’m still not—’ she broke off and cried again and Harry just held her, unsure of what to say.
‘Have you been to a healer?’ he finally asked.
She nodded. ‘They said that we’re both—fertile,’ she said with a frown at the last word. ‘And we try quite a lot,’ she added.
Harry scrunched his nose. ‘I know I said I don’t mind him, Hermione, but I really don’t want the image of you and Malfoy "trying" to get pregnant in my head,’ he said, making the air-quotes with his fingers.
This finally pulled a slight laugh from her throat and she rubbed her eyes, trying to calm herself down. ‘He just—we really want children,’ she said with a sad smile. ‘And I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen now.’
‘It will,’ Harry said, with more conviction than he felt. ‘And anyways, I thought you were supposed to be here to cheer me up,’ he said, smiling softly but trying to steer the conversation away from such a dour subject.
She gave a deep breath. ‘I know,’ she said. ‘I’m sorry. I’m sure it will happen soon. And I’m sure you’ll find someone else.’
Harry shook his head. ‘How can you be sure?’
Hermione gave a smile. ‘I just know,’ she said. ‘Ginny was who you thought you wanted to be with, but maybe what you need is what I felt when I saw Draco again at that Ball.’
‘And what’s that?’ Harry asked.
‘Fate,’ she said.
