Draco stood in front of the mirror in his bedroom in the manor. His mother was leaning against the doorframe with her ever present glass of wine in her hand, looking annoyed at him. Since his father had been imprisoned four years ago, his mother had taken up an interest in drinking entirely too much wine and glaring at him. This day was no different, there it was ten-thirty in the morning and his mother was on her third glass of wine. He looked at her through the mirror and reminded himself that if he couldn’t get a school after his apprenticeship then he’d have to make sure to get his own place, because living with his mother even just for the summer holiday was too much.
“Is there a reason you’re staring at me like that” He said, brushing his hair back and then sighing.
“You have no good memories of that place...” Narcissa said, tears filling her eyes.
“The only good memories I have are from that place” Draco contradicted “Do I have memories of a happy home at all?” He snorted “No, Lucius made sure I was tortured, and you made sure to ignore it all until it was too late” He looked away, his eyes dropping to the floor and fought to swallow the emotions that were trying to climb up his throat “The only times I got to experience even a little bit of happiness was when I was away from here and among people that were afraid of me...even that was hard”
“What?” Narcissa laughed meanly “Did you hope for a friendship like Potter and Weasley had with the mudblood?”
“At least they were true friends to one another” Draco muttered, he reached down and picked up his shrunken trunk and bags and situated them around him “Try not to pickle yourself, mum”
“Will I see you around Christmas holiday?” She asked, already stumbling down the hallway.
“Probably not” He answered “Bye”
Draco had gotten to the platform before most of the students showed up and took the very first compartment that was right behind the conductor. He knew that none of the students would bother him up there, it was common knowledge that if there were adults on the train, they’d be up front and not in the back, so that’s where they stayed. Except the one-time that Professor Lupin had sat in the back with Potter. At the thought of the old DADA professor, Draco felt his stomach tighten, he hadn’t gotten to know the man much, but he knew that he’d been a decent teacher and he seemed fair. He shouldn’t have had to die in that battle, it should never have happened. Draco placed himself by the window, so he could watch the students and the parents that were sending them off. It was something he did when he was a child himself, watch the happy families and pretend that one of those sniffling mothers waving to the train was waving at him. Sad to see him go, knowing he wouldn’t be back until December, or that the fathers who looked on in pride as their sons talked to pretty girls or talked with their Quidditch team members were looking at him that way. He wasn’t doing that now, now he was watching the kids and wondering if and when he’d like to have a few of his own. He vowed that when that happened he would make sure his kids would know that he loved them and that he was proud of them.
A sight caught his attention and surprised him quite a bit. Hermione Granger, she was still very small, very shapely, with a lot of spiral curls that rained down to her waist. The length of her hair alone told him that she’d changed, the Granger he’d known kept her hair at shoulder length because it was much more manageable and practical that way. She was dressed in a pair of simple black dress pants with a flowing and shimmering deep green top that was see-through and a dark green or black tank top underneath. Her little beaded bag was strapped over her ample chest, her face was lit up with happiness and she looked as beautiful as he remembered from the last time he’d seen her. She’d been staring at him with fire in her eyes, anger that they’d tied at the end of term exams. Surely, Hermione Granger had been so certain that she’d passed them all with flying colors and she had, but he had too.
Once she was on the train, Draco sat back against his seat and opened a book. His body jerked a little when the train took off, chugging slowly at first then building speed until they were zooming past houses and then hills and pastures. Knowing that Hermione was on the train made it nearly impossible for him to pay attention to the book in his hands. Finally, he put it back into his bag and picked them up, he poked his head out and looked around. The kids were occasionally moving from compartment to compartment, never paying the front any attention. He looked at the only other closed compartment, that had to be hers, he wasn’t interested in Hermione Granger in that way, but watching her get angry with that fire building in her eyes, the way she’d bite her lip when thinking of a cutting remark and the way her nose would twitch when he managed to offend her was entirely too intoxicating. He’d missed it when he’d been in Germany, going there had been one of his worse mistakes. The school had been horribly boring, the students were annoyingly perfect, and he hadn’t had a decent fight with someone in ages. Time to annoy Granger.
Granger had been magnificent in her fighting with him, it had been building up to be quite and enjoyable sparring session, when the American had asked when they’d broken up. They both looked at him, then they looked at one another, sure Draco had thought about what it would be like to date Hermione, if she’d be too pleasing like Pansy had been when they dated or if she would be just as argumentative as she was now. Those thoughts always led to thoughts about sex, would Granger be one of those girls that just laid there while he pounded into her, occasionally moaning while secretly wondering when he’d be done so she could go back to the book she was reading. Or...would Hermione Granger be as passionate in sex as she is with everything else in life. The mere thought of that made his insides shake even now and he had to think hard to keep from...well, becoming hard.
Donovan stared at the two as they stared at him. Hermione, with a look of horror on her very pretty face and Draco with amusement in his eyes. Donovan had only seen this type of love before, the type that fight so passionately and could love just as passionately, if only they’d allow themselves to. He’d assumed they’d dated once, had a bad breakup that really neither of them really wanted and now fought just to keep the passion between them in some form. Apparently, he was wrong.
“I believe you’re mistaken, Mr. Donovan” Draco said, his voice cold, his words clipped and sounding very forced “Granger and I have never...”
“And will never” Hermione interjected.
“Been a couple” Draco finished “She disgusts me”
“I detest him” Hermione added in quickly.
“I’m sorry” Donovan said, holding his hands up in surrender “I guess I read this situation” He waved his hands back and forth between them both “Completely wrong”
“You did” They said in unison, which made a small smile tug on his lips again, he turned his head away so they wouldn’t see it.
“So” Donovan said, looking at them again “What is the ancient runes professor like?”
“She’s nice” Hermione said “But she likes her students, and I imagine her apprentice, to have skills in critical thinking, being able to think outside the box and of course a love for studying”
“Sounds like my type of teacher” Donovan said “I love to study, love to learn new things and of course love critical thinking”
“Oh me too” Hermione gushed “Life is so much more interesting if you’ve got something new to learn”
“Okay” Draco said, standing up “This is getting boring real fast” He opened the door “Try not to conceive any children on the rest of the ride, it’s considered bad manners to be fucking in the compartments while the students are so close”
“You are such a worm!” Hermione hissed at him as he walked out with a small chuckle.
Hermione apologized profusely for Draco’s behavior, but Donovan just waved it off telling her that it was perfectly fine. An hour later found the two talking about their time at school, while Hermione talked about her experiences the American felt that she was editing out things. That there were things she wasn’t ready to relive yet and knowing about the battle at the very school they were heading to he was sure that it would be a while before she’d stop editing her stories. He edited his own stories, so he never pushed for anymore when she suddenly stopped in the middle of one of her own. They were just laughing about her first attempt at drinking Polyjuice Potion when there was a loud screeching noise that caused them to clamp their hands over their ears. Then there was a great shudder that tossed Donovan on to his side and Hermione clear out of her seat. Hermione heard screams from the terrified students, they mixed with the screeching that continued from the train. There was more banging, and the train shook viciously, Hermione crawled towards the window and looked out into the darkened, stormy outside world. Steam streamed past the window, making it hard to see, Hermione grabbed her wand and was getting ready to cast a spell when the breaks locked up fully and Hermione went flying forward and that was all she could remember because she smacked her head against the arm of the seat across from her.
A/N: I hope you’re liking this, we’ll figure out Donovan’s story as this continues, I just didn’t want to give away everything about him in the first couple chapters. Please Review!!
