Hermione arrived at King’s Cross station at half past ten on the first of September. She was early on purpose. She didn’t want to draw undue attention to herself.
She walked briskly through the barrier between platforms nine and ten and emerged beside the great, crimson engine. There weren’t many people here yet, and she was glad. Most of her friends had left the school. She knew Ginny and Luna very well, but beyond that, the year-group were strangers to her. She found an empty compartment and waited until she spotted the red hair of Ginny. She waved to her.
“Hi Hermione,” she said, joining her in the compartment. “I couldn’t believe it when we got your owl. It’s going to feel so different without all the others.”
“I’m just glad Professor McGonagall agreed. But I’m glad you’re here. I hardly know anyone!”
“I’ll introduce you. By the way, do you know where you’ll be staying? There’s a spare bed going in our dormitory now.”
“I’m not sure. Professor McGonagall said something about a special arrangement. I guess we’ll find out.”
But she was interrupted by the door opening once more, and in came a blonde-haired girl with a dreamy expression on her face.
“Luna, there you are!” Ginny smiled.
Luna Lovegood stowed a copy of the Quibbler in her pocket and sat down.
“Hello Ginny, Hermione,” she smiled. “Ginny told me you were coming back. whoozies are an addictive thing. I think the castle’s full of them. I don’t blame you for needing to revisit. But it’s good to see you again.”
“Erm… what are whoozies?” Hermione asked.
“They hide in…” Luna leaned in and continued in a hushed whisper. “They hide in the draw next to your bed. They come out at night and… explore you. Once they get you, you feel so good that you can’t bear to leave your bed. That’s why I sleep with a cork in my bum, so they can’t get to me.”
“You what… you know what, never mind,” Hermione said. “I don’t think it’s the whoozies, Luna. I just need to finish my studies.”
The train set off, and before long they were passing through barren countryside. But it was barely midday when the compartment door again opened, only this time the visitors were far less welcome. Crabbe and Goyle stood in the doorway. They were broad, and menacing, and had to walk in file to fit through the carriage door. They, too, must have decided to repeat their final year.
“We ‘erd you was coming back,” Crabbe said thickly.
“Oh, well done,” said Hermione sarcastically.
“And what do you think you’re doing here?” Ginny scowled.
The two Slytherins looked at each other and sniggered. “We’d like to know the same about Granger,” said Crabbe.
“I thought you’d be out of here as soon as possible. Especially now everyone knows your parents are death eaters.”
“No one can prove that!” said Goyle, slowly.
“Let me guess, you failed too many subjects and were kept back?” Ginny said. “I doubt they’ve ever had someone too thick to graduate before.”
“Malfoy’s not here to protect you this year,” Hermione said tightly. “What are you going to do without your ringleader?”
“Malfoy has taken to hiding in his mansion. But we don’t need him anymore. We’ve got a new ringleader.”
The compartment door opened once again, and in came a third familiar face, and one just as welcoming as Crabbe and Goyle.
“Hello, Granger,” said Pansy Parkinson, looking her up and down without so much as a smile. “I think you’re in for an interesting year.”
“What are you doing here?”
“Mummy said I’d never get anywhere in life with the grades I brought home. Told me I’d been wasting my time following that Malfoy round. Coerced someone at the school to let me stay. I don’t know how. But we need to be going. We’ll see you around.”
“I would watch your back, Granger. We’ve not got Malfoy, but you’ve not got Potter or Weasley. And I hardly think these two will be any good to you.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean?” Ginny started, but the three of them had left.
“That was nice,” Luna said, vaguely.
