Slightly trembling, Mia ran down the long corridor leading to the potions classroom. It was their first official encounter after that night and she was late, today of all days! She skidded to a halt in front of the heavy wooden door and nervously tried to calm her breath. Fear suddenly crept up her spine, but it was all to no avail, she had to go in; had to face him! She eventually summoned up all her courage, knocked briefly and slit into the room.
"Look, who also honours us with her presence!" Snape immediately greeted Mia in his oiliest tone.
"Let's see, Miss Anderson! You're eighteen minutes late, so I think I'll take nice and round twenty points from Gryffindor house!" The young witch froze in shock.
"But Professor, please! Let me –" The potions master interrupted her with a nasty look.
"Let you do WHAT, Miss Anderson?" he spat.
"The only thing you are allowed to do right now, is taking part in my lesson! So, be quiet and sit down!" It felt as if somebody had poured a bucket of icy-cold water over her head. Completely numb Mia passed the two grinning Slytherins, who had made it into sixth grade NEWT-course, and hid behind her cauldron. She didn't understand what suddenly was wrong. Yes, she had been late, but not without reason! Why wouldn't he at least listen to her explanation?
Brewing a potion always had been something enjoyable for her. That's why Mia had continued the subject after all. But today, for the first time, Snape made her hate it! He was constantly around, criticising every single thing she did; even exposed her to ridicule in front of the entire class if she made only the slightest mistake. Finally, her hands shook so violently, that she cut herself.
"Damn it!" she cursed and leaped away from her already prepared ingredients. Blood gushed down her hand; spreading fast over her skin and robes; dripping onto the floor. She tried to stop the bleeding with a piece of cloth, but within seconds it was crimson.
"One would think a student of mine could handle a knife after attending this class for more than five years!" Snape shouted maliciously.
"That'll cost Gryffindor another 5 points! And now get yourself to the hospital wing!" Clearly in pain Mia grabbed her bag and was about to leave, when the potions master suddenly stopped her.
"Wait! I forgot! This potion will be needed for our next lesson! You have to finish it! Tonight! 8pm sharp! Don't be late this time! Understood?" The seething anger deep inside of Mia suddenly welled up.
"I won't be!" she glared.
"The reason I was, was this!" The young woman thrusted a bloodstained letter into Snape's hand.
"From Professor McGonagall! She asked me to wait for it, so you'll get it as fast as possible! Apparently, she was wrong in believing you would listen! I guess she obviously doesn't know what an unjust bastard you really are!" Mia's face was nearly as red as the cloth around her hand. She turned on her heel and tried to cross the room but didn't get far. Violently Snape grabbed her shoulder and jerked her around. Furious rage was written all over his face.
"WHO do you think you are, Miss Anderson?" he literally screamed at her.
"If you ever talk to me like that again, you'll dearly pay for every single word out of line!" Mia's anger could easily match his but considering that the whole class was listening by now, she stopped herself from arguing and hissed just a simple 'Fine!' at him.
After attending the hospital wing Mia didn't return to potions. Instead, she fled into the library. The hundreds of shelfs filled with thousands of books calmed her and she finally was able to regret her outburst. Suddenly somebody tapped her onto her shoulder. She jerked around almost anticipating Snape, but it just was Thomas, one of her classmates from Ravenclaw.
"Are you okay?" he asked and set down. Mia nodded silently.
"Blimey, today that old bat definitely had a huge bug up his arse! Until now, I never have seen him in such a horrible temper!" The young woman made an unarticulated sound.
"I'm so sorry, that he obviously had it in for you! That wasn't fair, at all!"
"Thank you!" Mia finally mumbled, then she shook her head.
"But on the other hand, I should have known better, than to provoke him!"
"Stop beating yourself up, Mia! Everybody would have reacted as you did, after the ordeal he put you through! I mean, it felt like as if he meant to destroy you right in front of us!" Even though Thomas couldn't know what had happened between Snape and her, his comment still made Mia think. Maybe he was right! Maybe her professor indeed did mean to punish her for that one night.
"If that's true, I can't do anything about it! So, let's change subject, can we?" Pleadingly, she looked into Thomas' blue eyes until he agreed.
"I've heard a rumour, that there will be a Yule Ball next month because of the Triwizard Tournament. I would like to have you as a partner!" The blond Ravenclaw reddened and obviously didn't know what to say. He just stared at her, his mouth wide open. Mia smiled.
"Assuming, of course, Snape let's me see daylight again and also doesn't turn me into a toad or a twitchy little ferret like Moody did with that blond fourth-year Slytherin!" Thomas couldn't help but laugh and eventually he overcame his congelation.
"I would love to accompany you to that ball!" he admitted with a slightly embarrassed grin. Mia grinned back and the two left the library together.

With an honest apology on her lips, she knocked at Snape's office door even five minutes earlier than he had ordered her to come. The moment he opened the door it became unmistakably clear that he was still fuming.
"I am terribly sorry for what –" He didn't let her finish.
"I don't care, Miss Anderson! Get started! Now!" That cold fury in his voice made Mia shudder. Helplessly she looked at him, then she attended her cauldron. The sooner she could leave him and that room, the better! Neatly she cut her ingredients; followed the recipe – or at least that's what she thought.
"Can't you read?" Snape suddenly sneered.
"You were supposed to stir after adding the raven-eyes! Do it again!" And the work of almost an hour simply vanished into thin air. Mia had to start over from the scratch. She tried her best, but she couldn't concentrate any longer. Too much she had to restrain her anger.
"Wrong colour!" The potions master barked with sardonic pleasure and again her cauldron was empty. The young woman bit her lips, her back heaving by now. She must not yell at him!
Her next attempt also wasn't good enough for him and the next one either. A mixture of rage and exhaustion made her shake by now. Mia just wanted to get out of here! She was tired and the clock already had struck midnight. One last ingredient and it finally would be over. Relieved she closed her eyes and dropped a bit of gingerroot into the boiling liquid.
"Wrong colour, again!" Snape spitefully hissed and erased the nearly complete potion.
"It was not!" Mia wailed.
"It should have been turquoise, and it WAS turquoise!" Desperately she looked into her empty cauldron, then at her professor.
"Why are you doing that?" Snape's lips curled sarcastically.
"Because your incompetence endangers the entire class, Miss Anderson! And is it not my responsibility as a teacher to prevent that from happening?" A slap to the face couldn't have hurt more. Mia gasped for air and against her will tears suddenly filled her eyes. She tried to steady herself; tried to endure that torture. It took two more agonizing goes before Snape finally allowed her to finish her potion.
"Not so fast!" he snarled as soon as Mia was about to leave his office. She froze.
"Your insufferable behaviour back in class have bought yourself more of those pleasant evenings with me! I shall say a week-long worth of detention will do!" Like a predator he waited for her to argue, but Mia didn't.
"See you the same time tomorrow, then! NOW you can go!"
--***--
After two weeks of Snape continuously tormenting her whenever he had the opportunity, Mia finally drew her consequences. No grade was worth that hell! Of cause, she couldn't avoid him entirely! He still was a teacher at Hogwarts, and she was a student, but their encounters would naturally reduce to a minimum.
Caught up in her thought she stood at the bank of the Black Lake and watched the Durmstrang ship's icy-white rigging gently move in a cold breeze.
"You were supposed to be in class, Miss Anderson!" A very familiar voice suddenly spat. Mia silently sighed.
"Your mistaken, Professor! I wasn't!" She responded completely neutral.
"I cancelled potions this very morning! Given the circumstances it is best not to attend your classes any longer. I suppose, you will receive the official information soon!" Snape angrily turned her around.
"What?" he shot.
"I hate to repeat myself, Professor! I'm pretty sure you understood perfectly well!"
"I won't agree to that!" Almost horror-struck the potions master fixed her gaze. She had been one of his best students prior to that dreadful night.
"Thankfully, you have neither right nor saying in making this decision!" Snape seized her shoulders and shook them, as if to wake her.
"Don't tell me, you voluntarily give up your future!" he hissed. The sudden coldness in her beautiful green-brown eyes deeply frightened him.
"My future is none of your business, Professor! I have to go!" She jerked herself free and turned away.
"Mia, wait!" For the first time ever, Snape called her by her first name and indeed she stopped to face him again.
"Oh yeah! I forgot! You haven't taken any points off my house or given me detention yet. So, let's get it over with, shall we? Tell me then, Professor, how will you punish me this time?" Thunderstruck he stared at her; his tongue bound. She waited a couple of more seconds, then walked away.
"I never wanted that to happen!" Snape finally was capable of articulating, but of cause, she had long since vanished. Why did he always tend to make those horrific mistakes, which were bound to ruin not only his OWN life?!
"For Merlin's sake!" he swore and hurried back to the castle. So now, there was another mess to clean up; another damage to repair! But at least this time, he was pretty sure he still could make things right! Impatiently he knocked at McGonagall's office door and entered. Surprised the head of Gryffindor house looked at him.
"Severus! What an unexpected pleasure! How can I help?" While she spoke, she offered him the chair opposite her desk, but Snape preferred to rather stand near the fireplace.
"Is it true, that Miss Anderson cancelled my NEWT-course?" He asked bluntly. Immediately McGonagall's lips tightened, and her gaze became stern.
"Unfortunately, it is!" She took a roll of parchment from her desk and handed it to him.
"As soon as Albus signs the document, it will be official!" Suddenly she looked as dangerous as a dragon about to breathe fire.
"Tell me, why she quits?" His face expressionless, Snape shrugged his shoulders.
"I suppose she just did it on a whim!" Bad choice! The potions master literally shrunk, when McGonagall rose like the lioness she was.
"A whim! You call your disgusting behaviour towards her a whim?!" she snorted, sparks in her eyes. Snape's sallow skin to some extent whitened and a muscle twitched in his cheek, but apart from that, he remained serene and straight-faced. It was crucial to find out, how much McGonagall had actually learned. That investigation was a dangerous game though. To outwit her of all people even for Snape was a tricky task. One wrong move and she was onto him!
"What did she tell you?" he asked briskly, shifting his weight from one leg to the other.
"Nothing! The poor girl didn't dare to speak a single word against you, Severus! She was too scared to confine even in me, her head of house!" McGonagall furiously shot. For a split-second the potions master was taken aback by that bit of information but processing it had to wait. His black eyes fixed on the fuming woman in front of him, he concentrated on keeping his face blank, while she raged on.
"It was one of her classmates, who brought those gruesome stories about endless detentions and your horrible treatment during lessons to my attention. Believe me, if Miss Anderson would have confirmed only a single one of those accusations, Albus would be the one holding you accountable for the things you obviously have done to her for weeks down there in your dungeons! It is bad enough, that you get away with tormenting the countless Mr. Longbottoms amongst our students over and over again, now you even can't help but destroy those, who were rather good at your subject! With her outstanding potions marks Miss Anderson had a great career ahead! All ruined!" Ringing silence fell upon the room, when McGonagall at last set down again, her lips still as thin as a line.
"That's why I'm here, Minerva!" Snape chose his next words very carefully.
"Recently, there have been some differences between Miss Anderson and me, but it wasn't my intention to make her quit. I just tried to teach her a lesson! I admit, I've overdone it!" McGonagalls nostrils flared.
"I'm afraid, I can't help you, Severus! Miss Anderson made her case perfectly clear to me and given the things I found out yesterday, I won't force her to continue a subject, for which you as her teacher have totally spoiled the fun! Her reasons to drop out in the middle of the schoolyear are more than sufficient!" Determined, she folded her hands and observed the potions master through her square spectacles.
"That's my final word!"
"Please reconsider! Or at least put it on hold! She indeed is a very good student of mine, and it would be a shame, if her talent for potions goes to waste. Let me resolve the issues with her once and for all! And of cause, I will apologize!" For quite a while both professors stared at each other, then McGonagall suddenly took a deep breath.
"Let me see, what I can do!" She glared at him.
"But I have one condition, Severus! Until the matter is settled, you speak to her only in my office, with me as a witness! Did I make myself clear?" Although her protective call complicated things, Snape gladly agreed to it.
--***--
Mia had a sense of foreboding, when she entered McGonagalls office the same day at half past six.
"You wanted to see me, Professor?" she nervously asked.
"Yes, Miss Anderson! Please sit down! Would you like a cup of tea?" While she occupied the chair opposite her teacher's desk, Mia shook her head.
"No, thanks! I'm fine!" She started to tensely knit her fingers.
"I'd rather cut to the chase, Professor! It's about potions, isn't it? Let me guess, you changed your mind and …" She had to swallow hard. "and won't let me quit!" Seeing the young woman in front of her suddenly crumple in resignation, put McGonagall in a bit of a pickle. But before she even could start, Mia stood up.
"Excuse me, Professor! I'm tired. May I go, please?" The deputy headmistress couldn't help but to embrace her by now trembling student maternally. Alas, Mia fought that gesture.
"Don't! I'm fine!" She bit back her tears.
"I'm just tired!" Struggling with herself, the young woman took a step towards the door.
"Am I allowed to return to my common room, please?"
"Of cause, you are!" Nevertheless, before Mia could vanaish McGonagall put an arm around her shoulder.
"Keep in mind that my door is always open! What happened to you in the dungeons during the past weeks is abominable and if that ever happens again, I personally will make sure, that Severus has to face the consequences! The only reason, why I want you to continue, is my believe, that things will settle soon and therefore go back to normal! I don't want you to regret a rash decision!" No sooner her professor had ended, Mia fled the office.
Halfway to the Marbel Staircase she suddenly noticed a black figure emerge from the shadows. Mia's heart skipped a beat, and a deep fear turned her entrails inside out. She was in no state to face Snape, yet there was no escape whatsoever! He came closer, levelled and then thankfully passed her without a word. The next moment his footsteps faded. Had he stopped? Mia didn't wanna find out and broke into a run.
Snape saw her hasten through the door. He sighed, then he continued his way to McGonagalls office.
"Wasn't Miss Anderson supposed to wait for me?" he growled. The head of Gryffindor house folded her arms.
"You've done quite a brilliant job, Severus! She was so devastated, when she found out, that she has to continue your classes, she instantly fled the room!" McGonagall hissed like an angry cat.
"From now on, I'll keep a sharp eye on you! Torment her again and you have to answer to me!"
Back in the dungeons Snape fell onto his sofa. His hands clasped behind his head he stared at the ceiling. They had to talk, no doubt about that! But he still hadn't figured how! How could he convince her to listen? McGonagalls words echoed through his mind, and she was right! He indeed had been thorough; had within a few weeks seated so much fear and hatred inside of her, that Mia surely wouldn't come near him again, if not forced!
