Epilogue
Coming out of the house. Hermione paused, glancing around the garden. The flowers were in full bloom, showing their full colors as the breeze from the sea beyond the cliff blew gently. Glancing toward the cliff, she sees the figure of Harry standing there, staring out over the waves.
It had been six months since that fateful day when Harry had defeated Voldemort once and for all. The losses on both sides had been huge. Some of the best wizards and witches in their world, lost in a matter of hours and hurled curses and hexes.
Remembering back to that morning, she recalls finding him sleeping in a chair before the dying fire and name whispered softly on his lips as he dreamt. "Cedric." At first, it haunted her and brought forth a shiver of fear. She couldn't have helped but wonder if it was an omen shaded with doom. Then, shaking her head at her own foolishness, she had walked into the room to wake her closest companion in life.
As they had left to face their fate, Harry's comment about "ghosts of the past" had brought the fear back for a fleeting moment before she had quickly stamped it back down. The rest of that day had passed in a blur as she watched people she had known for almost ten years fell in defeat and rose in victory. Later, she would remember that she had held Draco's hand, after finding herself alone and disoriented in the melee. Draco had come out of nowhere to shield her and grabbed her hand to pull her aside, only letting go when it was over. While they had covered each other's back, Ron tried to protect Harry in the initial confusion.
In that final moment, when the victory had been theirs, she had sat with Ron's head held in her lap and cried while Harry held her close, mourning the loss of their brother-in-soul to the fight. Then, watching as Harry and Draco talked quietly of the changes that would be made for the better and begin talks of rebuilding.
It hadn't been but a few weeks after that when Harry had left to find his own peace. She was one of the few who knew how to find him, his godfather and Remus Lupin two others, along with Arthur Weasley. Together, the four of them protected and guarded Harry as he healed.
Today she watched him for a time, as she had leaned against the stoop. Then approaching him she winced as her foot came down on some dried bracken and crackled loudly, announcing her presence. "I was wondering when you would come back to check on me." His voice was soft but clear in the air.
"I'm no ghost Harry." Hermione's answer was just as soft but not as certain, more hopeful.
"I know. I'm glad you're here 'Mione." Harry turned to smile at her. Holding out his arms, he laughed softly as she threw herself into them with a soft cry of joy. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you. But, I'll stay if you want me," she whispered against his shoulder.
Harry stepped away briefly and smiled at her, his eyes filled with a range of emotions. "I'd like that, very much." Nodding to himself in a satisfactory manner, he pulled her next to him and sighed as she slid her arm around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder.
They stood that way for a long time and watched the sun set over the sea and looked into the future.
