Chapter 2
They did what was asked of them obediently, discreetly keeping distance to each other. While they were following the headmaster through the corridors to the office, Severus had some time to get a good look at his ex-student. Potter was wearing old, worn but flawlessly mended robes and a heavy grey cloak. He didn't seem to be so skinny or frail looking anymore like in his schooldays. But, despite the different hair colour (he stored this question away for later) he hadn't changed much. But the look in his eyes and the lines around Potter's mouth didn't match the features of a 20 year old. The green was as sparkling as ever, even feverish at the moment, but it didn't betray his every feeling anymore.
As much as the boy had tried to hide his feelings when teased and ridiculed by his Potions Master, his eyes had always been a giveaway. War and recent events, Severus tensed, forced youths to grow up fast.
But, nonetheless…
Potters hands played nervously with the folds of his robes and he had pulled the hood over his head again, hiding his identity.
Curious glances were thrown their way.
"Mr. Anderson, it is impolite to stare!" A snide remark made the little idiot stutter something and hurry off in the other direction.
Would Harry Potter take the girl with him when he would go away? As much as he had wanted to get rid of Lierin firstly, he would fight tooth and nail to prevent it now.
Only because Potter was no person to care for a small child, of course.
No mushy feelings involved.
Whom do you try to lie to?
"No running in the corridors, Miss Wilton. Ten points from Hufflepuff.
Dumbledore ignored Snape's antics and instead pointed out a new addition to the paintings to the Gryffindor alumni. It showed people gathering in front of a new shop at Hogsmead's main street. Three bright Ws were blinking over the entrance.
But Harry wasn't interested.
Inside the headmaster's office they were offered the traditional lemon drop. Both shook their head in the negative and seated
themselves as far away from another as possible.
Snape had enough experience with headoffice situations and Harry Potter and, slipping back to old thought matrixes, he expected the usual behaviour. Stuttering, nervous attempts to describe the mishaps this boy seems to get in regularly, `just bad luck, wrong time'. Downcasted eyes and worried side glances at the sworn enemy, him, the head of Slytherin house.
Severus came back to the present and observed the situation. No one in the room felt comfortable but unlike former times Potter didn't look jumpy, he was more---blank.
"Now Mr Potter, please tell us what happened"
The Gryffindor's knuckles looked white. He caught Snape's inquisitive glare and relaxed his hands.
"The Death Eaters captured me on my way to the Dursley's car. The trolley was a—" Green eyes closed slowly and his voice faltered. "—a timed portkey."
Albus nodded and silently added two lumps of sugar to a cup of tee and shoved it over the table to the young man, let him take his time. Then he offered another cup to his colleague, using a different pot.
Severus shook his head. The boy had a bad luck with portkeys, really.
He tried to push away his own feelings and act objectively like he would with every other Voldemort business. Well, maybe with Sirius Black as the second exception.
Potter was nipping at the hot liquid and after a time relaxing a bit.
"I don't know where it took me. An old building, judging by the dungeon. Big. I was never given the grand tour so I cannot say for sure."
"The day after weren't comfortable."
A week smile and a, like Severus thought, pathetic shrug of shoulders.
"I don't know to date what they really wanted from me. They never asked questions."
That made Snape curious, but considering Voldemorts fascination with the Boy-Who-Lived and his tries to make him an ally and if just to spite Dumbledore, it wasn't illogical.
"I had no chance to fight them, they took away my wand immediately after I arrived, still dizzy. They could have killed me easily. I've never seen dear old Voldy."
Snape nearly chocked at his tea.
"Just his brain dead little Death Munchers, playing their games with me."
Harry's lips were tense and thin with strain, the eyes unfocused.
Snapping back to the present he stared at the beverage in his hands and accusingly met the headmaster's eyes.
Dumbledore nodded. "Veritasserum. We couldn't take the risk that you switched sides."
Severus had to hide his astonished look behind his cup. Sometimes even he forgot that the old warlock's naïve and harmless façade was just that, a façade.
The green eyed didn't appear to be angry, or surprised.
"Understandable. To make it clear, I don't work for Tom Riddle, now known as Lord Voldemort, nor do I support any of his goals. I would never harm innocent people and use dark magic. Clear enough?"
"Quite."
Potter sipped on his tea and returned to his tale.
"I hope you don't expect me to give you a list of what they did to me."
Another pause.
"Madam Pomfrey will check you trough and her report will answer most of my questions, I think."
"I guess they didn't want to damage me beyond repair. Just-"
"Break you." Severus finished for him. He thought of Lucius summoning and he had seen their handiwork.
And I added my own signs.
"Hm, yes."
Without definite questions to be asked, diluted Veritasserum only forced the drinker to stick to the truth, not spilling all his
secrets like the pure potion would.
Dumbledore formulated his question carefully.
"And Lierin? Tell us about her and how you managed to escape. It is a miracle that you managed to do so."
"A Miracle? More, how was it always put, sheer dumb luck."
A humourless laugh.
Harry looked defeated and really, really tired.
"I don't really know how it was possible for me to get pregnant. Some of the torture included painful transformations, of course hexes. I don't think that they intended this result but maybe some of their methods couldn’t be mixed. And my escape... I tricked them."
"Poppy will be able to tell us more about the hexes."
With half closed eyes and a break now and then, Dumbledore pushing him forward, the young man told his story, his voice nearly
expressionless. Apparently he had lost track of time during his ordeal and hadn't been really aware of what was done to him by whom.
No daylight and unconsciousness aren't good for judging time. In hindsight he found out that it had been four days.
And his encounter with Snape?
He remembered being told at some point that they had an extra present for him. Malfoy had made some acid remarks. Yes, Potter knew it had been Malfoy, he was nearly blind without his glasses and his eyes had been swollen nearly shut after his first `session' but his ears worked well enough. And the bastards had called each other by their names.
Nott, McMulligan, Malfoy and Presley, these were the names Potter could remember. They have spoken freely. Why not, they never expected him to escape.
Snape.
He hadn't known who was raping him until Lucius Malfoy had spoken the name. Not that Potter cared much at this point.
Dumbledore didn't dwell long at this, he had gotten an accurate report from his spy after it happened, not knowing the identity of
the victim.
Potter's escape?
Good luck and Malfoy's incompetence.
Malfoy senior had wanted to have his fun, taunting and making fun of his helpless victim. Mocking about how famous Harry Potter couldn't cope with getting forced by his ex-teacher.
Bending down, touching the prisoner's thigh and then whipping disgustedly his stained fingers clean on the equally dirty (so what was his point but shaming the younger?) face of Harry.
And that was his mistake.
He underestimated the boy. Adrenaline and despair can support you with extra strength.
Harry Potter's eyes searched his old mentor's face, a little
defiantly.
"I tackled him, he didn't expect it and rendered him useless. I took his wand," He pulled a mahagony wand, which Severus recognised as Lucius', out of his sleeve. "and searched his pockets. He had some invisibility potion with him. I used it to escape unnoticed trough a fireplace. They haven't even closed the floo-connection in these dungeons, can you believe it’s not that I complain."
He gulped.
Severus remembered Lucius' sudden appearance and the half-empty vial in his hands. The bastard. He hadn't wanted to soil his pristine aristocratic hands but liked observing secretly some male-male action.
And Potter really had a tendency to rescue his neck out of lethal situations with sheer nerve.
Narcissa Malfoy had told the Potions Master that her husband had fallen down a staircase, that he had broken his neck in this accident.
Remembering this bit of information now, Snape raised an eyebrow, tipped his fingers together and draw his own conclusions.
An accident.
Sort of.
"Go on."
"The rest is rather blurry. I flooed god knows where and gave an old woman nearly a heart attack when I stumbled out of her fireplace. I was out for quite some time. Madam Avon is a half crazy witch, she thought that I was her son, coming home from war. I needed long to recover and then-"
He played with the now empty teacup in his hands, observing it as if
it was the most interesting thing in existence.
"I fount out about my condition. It was a shock."
"Highly understandable."
"You wonder why I didn't contact you? I saw all the newspaper articles about my disappearance, everyone seemed to be thinking that I was dead. And in a way I appreciated it. I was ashamed."
The headmaster tried to interrupt but Potter raised his hand and continued.
"I know that it is not logical, I haven't done something wrong, apart from running into their trap, that is but it is just the way I felt."
"Hormones."
"Yes, but there is more to it." He looked so tired, rubbing his forehead. Albus stood up and put a comforting hand on the young man's shoulders, squeezing slightly and putting it away carefully as Potter recoiled.
" Maybe we should call it a day and let you retreat to your chambers. You don't have to have some injuries treated immediately, do you?"
"No."
"The most important things, your allegiances, have been covered. You need time to regain your strength.
Dear Severus will be pleased to host you during your hopefully long stay. Get to know your daughter again, sleep in and then speak with the nurse. We will continue this tomorrow in the evening.
We don't want to separate the newly united family for too long, do we?"
He ushered the younger men out of their armchairs and towards the door.
"Hush, hush. To bed my dears!"
They found themselves outside the closed office doors before they could collect their wits.
"He always does this."
"Yeah."
Another stunned period of silence. Snape recontemplated the last minutes.
He had to make sleeping arrangements for Harry Potter.
In his quarters.
For a long time visit.
For Harry Potter who was the `mother' of his little daughter.
"Oh hell"
Albus Dumbledore was listening to the departing footsteps and smiled.
Fawkes chirped softly, like asking his master what he was plotting. A old and wrinkled hand patted his head. "They are really not the ideal pair but they will grow on each other, I will see to it. They both have to learn what a family means."
