Notes: This story takes place after book 5 while Harry is back at Hogwarts.
Harry couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going on as the months passed. Professor McGonagall seemed to be keeping something from Harry, and Dumbledore had left soon after the first night back at Hogwarts. Anytime Harry tried to ask where he was McGonagall gave him a worried look and told him he was called away to the ministry to take care of something, and would say no more. Malfoy on the other hand seemed to be growing more and more excited about something. The more they talked about it the more Harry, Ron, and Hermione new something was wrong. Could Voldermort already have made a strike some where? The question was soon answered.
Harry had just landed on the ground with the snitch in his hands, when Professor McGonagall came running along the Quidditch field in Harry’s direction.
‘What’s wrong Professor?’ Harry asked worriedly.
‘I’m afraid you must come with me Mr. Potter.’
Harry followed without question, and he soon found himself, in Dumbledore’s office.
‘Harry, I’m afraid I have some bad news.’ Dumbledore began. ‘I’m afraid that Lucious Malfoy has used his connections in the ministry and convinced them to let him leave Azkaban prison.’
Harry was dumbstruck. How could this have happened?
‘But why did they do that? Now, Voldermort will have just one more servant to do his bidding!’ Harry yelled, clearly upset.
‘I’m sorry, but I’m afraid I could not prevent it. With this in mind I believe it is time to begin your true training.’
‘What do you mean my true training?’ Harry asked, with a strange look on his face.
‘I’m afraid Harry that if you are to face Lord Voldermort, you will have to learn far more than what your classes are teaching you. I will try to find a way to begin teaching you these new things as they are... rather unusual to teach someone so young,’ Dumbledore said uneasily. ‘But, for now I will have to make certain arrangements, and ask you not to tell anyone about this conversation.’
With that Harry knew the meeting was over. He walked out of Dumbledore’s office with a feeling of quite dread letting his feet carry him back to the common room. As he reached the portrait of the Fat Lady he saw that she was gone, probably visiting another painting in the castle. Sighing, Harry just turned around and let his feet take him through the castle until he found himself in front of the lake. Starring into the black lake was soothing, and soon Harry forgot about his meeting with Dumbledore and just started imaging himself back on the Quidditch field, winning the match against Slytherin. It was so calming that Harry didn’t hear someone come up from behind him.
‘What are you doing out here Potter?’ said a familiar voice.
Harry turned his head only to be face to face with Draco Malfoy.
‘I’m just trying to find a quite place to think’ Harry declared turning his head once more, looking up into the starry night.
‘What do you need to think about? I thought Dumbledore did all the thinking for you?’ Malfoy retorted.
‘I heard your father was released from Azkaban; you must be happy’ Harry replied now turning around completely to face Malfoy.
When Harry did this, he noticed Malfoy trying to hide the sad expression on his face. Neither of them spoke for a moment, until Malfoy broke the silence:
‘You shouldn’t turn you back so much, Potter, someone might see it as a good target."
"Is that supposed to scare me?" Harry replied. "Go ahead! Try to curse me if you think you really can.’
‘Don’t tempt me Potter!’
‘Well,’ Harry began, ‘we both know your father is a Death Eater, but can you be as ruthless? Aside from the fact that you’re a bigoted jerk, I’ve never seen you be as evil as your father. So is that really where you want to be?’
Draco was obviously at a loss for words, which gave Harry a chance to continue.
‘The fact you’re in Slytherin it self means you will do anything to get what you want, but can you really go as far as joining Voldemort? Or... do you even have a choice?’
Draco winced at Voldemort’s name but quickly recovered his composer as to not let Harry see. He then moved closer to Harry, allowing their eyes to meet but only for a moment. Harry turned around to face the lake once more and in that moment Draco realized that Harry wasn’t afraid of him. Knowing who Draco’s father was, or anything else about him didn’t matter to Harry. Realizing that, his rivalry with Harry didn’t seem to matter that much anymore. Although, what shocked him more was Harry’s insight. It was true, he didn’t have a choice. From the day he was born he was trained in the darkest of magical arts, for the soul purpose of preparing him to become a Death Eater.
‘If that’s the case, it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m living proof that Dumbledore can keep anyone safe from Voldemort. I know that if you just go and talk to him, Dumbledore can help you. He wouldn’t hold what your father has done against you, and I know he believes in giving people second chances.’
‘Why are you telling me all this Potter?’ Draco spat, trying to sound angry. ‘Don’t you know it’s already too late? Since the very day of my birth I’ve been raised to follow in my father’s footsteps and even Dumbledore can’t stop You-Know-Who’ Draco replied turning his face away.
‘It’s not too late! Dumbledore can help you, give you a second chance. But it’s your choice Malfoy, but remember this, if you do become a Death Eater and we meet in battle, I won’t hold back! When the final battle comes, Voldemort will pay for all he’s done, as well as his servants, even if I have to die to do it.’
Draco was taken aback. Over the years as his encounters with Harry increased, and he could tell Harry’s skills were increasing dramatically. But, it didn’t matter, his fate was sealed, and no one could save him...
‘Why are you out here anyway? It’s well passed midnight now.’ Draco asked, trying to change the subject.
‘I wanted to be alone, and this placed seemed to be ideal, plus I always liked the lake.’
‘Me too...’ Draco responded.
‘So why are you out here?’ Harry shot back.
‘I needed to clear my head and get away Crabe and Goyle.’
‘Why? Did you finally figure out that they’re brainless?’ Harry chuckled.
Draco almost laughed with Harry just then, but realized who he was talking to. Harry saw the look on Draco’s face and they both suddenly realized that something had just changed between them. The animosity they felt towards each other was gone leaving behind a rather perplexing feeling.
‘I’m heading to bed,’ Harry declared suddenly, breaking the silence. ‘I’ve had a long day and by the looks of it tomorrow isn’t going to be much better.’
Harry began to walk back into the castle when Draco suddenly spoke:
‘Potter, wait!’
Harry turned around with his hands clutching his wand from the inside pocket of his robes, honestly not knowing what to expect. Another moment of strange silence passed, as they both started directly into each others eyes. Then without warning Draco grabbed Harry by the collar, pulling him into a kiss. This being the last thing Harry expected Malfoy to do, he found himself frozen in surprise. Harry knew something had changed between them but this...? He could feel the emotion of Malfoy’s kiss flow out of Malfoy’s mouth and into his own along with Draco’s tongue.
Even tough Draco’s kiss was powerful, Harry could easily break free, but to his surprise he didn’t want to. Harry responded by opening his mouth to let Draco’s tongue in completely as well as to extend his own. For a minute, that was all either of them could do, neither wanting to let go. When they were finally out of breath they broke off, gasping for air, while staring into each others eyes. Then, without saying a word, Draco turned around and walked back over to the edge of the lake. Harry, completely dumbstruck, didn’t know what to say or do. For a moment he stood there, looking at Draco’s back. Not knowing what to say, Harry just turned around and began to walk back up to the castle...
