Heart of Darkness and Light
Chapter 2
Severus awoke in his own bed, unsure of what had transpired the previous night. Was it a dream? It must have been. Encounters with beautiful women who happened to be goddesses didn’t happen to former Death Eaters like him. He sat up and stretched, his muscles aching, as they hadn’t in, well, years. He wondered what time it was.
‘Accio timepiece.’ he called out absently, without grabbing his wand, Accio was one spell he could easily use without his wand. He glanced at the pocket watch and realized that he was late for breakfast.
Severus got out of bed, padded to the bathroom and threw cold water over his face. He looked in the mirror and saw his real face staring back at him. There was something about his eyes that seemed wrong, though. He looked closer, dark ebony eyes meeting dark ebony eyes. What was it? It wasn’t something he could put his finger on, the eyes looking back at him somehow didn’t seem as tortured as usual. He splashed more water over his face and shook his head. That was just silly. He brushed his teeth, ran a comb through his hair, and walked back into his chambers. He got dressed, whistling a little tune as he did. As he threw on his teaching robes, he became aware of his own whistling. He stopped in his tracks and scratched his head.
‘Dammit, Snape, what is wrong with you? One rather heavenly dream and you’re whistling? Are you mad?’ he said to his reflection in the mirror above his dresser. Again, he shook his head and left his chambers.
As he passed one of the ornate mirrors in the corridor outside the Great Hall he absently glanced at its surface and realized he’d forgotten his appearance charm. He quickly donned the charm and pushed open the doors to the Great Hall. He strode to the head table, glaring at the students he passed. He took a seat at the end and mumbled a vague apology to the other staff for his lateness. Looking down the table, he bypassed the twinkling blue eyes of Albus Dumbledore and momentarily locked eyes with Ariah Morrigan. She smiled at him almost imperceptibly and he suddenly remembered the object of his nocturnal fantasy. He quickly averted his eyes from her deep blue eyes and felt his face redden slightly. He ate his breakfast in silence, trying not to think of Professor Morrigan. As he became more and more enraptured by the swirls in his coffee cup, he felt a cool lotus and water lily scented breeze pass by his back and a hand lightly rest on his shoulder. The hand’s owner leaned over and whispered in his ear.
‘It wasn’t a dream, Severus, last night happened and I don’t regret it. I do regret not waking up next to you, however,’ she straightened up and dropped a book on the table, raising her voice above the whisper, ‘thank you for lending me this, it was opening. I had no idea there were so many potions to combat curses and how poorly executed most of them were, Professor Snape. Have a lovely day and try not to terrorize too many Hufflepuffs. I have the first years after you’ve finished with them and I usually have to take the first 5 minutes of class to calm them down.’ She smiled a vivid smile, lightly squeezed his shoulder, and left the Great Hall.
Severus felt a quick grin rising up and he quickly pushed it back down, but not before Albus Dumbledore caught sight of it. Albus glanced quizzically at Severus but said nothing. Severus felt the familiar scowl take its place on his face as he got up from breakfast, said a hasty goodbye to his peers, and swept out of the Great Hall, his robes billowing behind him. He made it through the doors and collapsed against one of the stone walls. It wasn’t a dream. The mysterious encounter of the previous night had happened. And now…what? How could he go back to the dark existence of Severus Snape? How could he go back to what he truly was? He had felt truth and light last night, he felt hope. And having felt hope, he now felt lost. He felt more lost than ever. What was he? Who was he? And why did she seem to care? Severus heard the scraping of the chairs in the Great Hall. He pulled himself together and hurried to his classroom.
Somehow, Severus got through the morning without having to scrape any Hufflepuffs off the ceiling, in spite of 3 melted cauldrons and a ghastly stench from angelica root that missed its mark. He sighed. Hufflepuffs tended to be a bit stupid, in his opinion. In the end, he gave 4 detentions and took 75 points from Hufflepuff and for good measure, took 20 points from Ravenclaw during the next class as an attitude adjustment. He sat at his desk at the end of the final morning class and cradled his head in his hands, becoming aware of a tremendous pounding in his temples. As he was contemplating which potion to use to combat his headache, cool hands began to massage his temples. He caught a waft of the lotus and water lily scent that could only belong to Ariah. He sighed as he felt her soft lips brush his left temple.
‘Shhh,’ she said softly, ‘let me take care of your headache for you.’
The door to the potions classroom shut silently and locked, seemingly on its own. Ariah gently pushed Severus’ hair out of the way and kissed his neck. She nuzzled him softly and wrapped her arms around him.
‘Why?’ he asked, ‘Why me? I’m not a nice man.’
‘And I’m not a nice woman,’ replied Ariah, ‘In fact, I’m not a woman at all. As a goddess, and one who has some experience with war, I’ve seen and done some less than wonderful things myself, Sev. No, you’re not a nice man, but inside you want to be a good man, and you have that potential. It’s not niceness I’m looking for anyway. I’m entranced by your mind—and by your soul. It’s all of you that draws me, not just one thing. You have layers. Many of them. Too many to count, in fact. You’re complex,’ she slid around his body until she was sitting on his lap, arms around his neck. She smiled at him, ‘and dead sexy, as well.’
Ariah brushed her lips against his and ran her hands through his hair. She deepened her kiss and gently nibbled on his lower lip. Severus held her closely and again felt tears forming in his eyes. He hated that sign of weakness. He routinely castigated students for crying in this very room. Ariah left his lips and moved her mouth up to his eyes, gently kissing away the tears.
‘It’s not weakness you know. Not always. Sometimes tears cleanse the soul.’ She said, as she moved back to his lips, he tasted the salt of his tears as he returned her kiss.
‘Guess my soul needs a lot of cleansing these days,’ he murmured against her lips.
‘I would think so,’ she replied, snuggling against his chest ‘now, Professor Snape, what are you doing after the detentions I’ll bet you gave for tonight?’
‘Oh, I thought I’d brew some potions, sit back with a good book.’
‘Could you pencil in ‘ravish a goddess’?’
‘I suppose so.’
‘Good,’ she said with a sardonic grin, ‘we’d better get to lunch, I believe Albus is expecting us there.’
‘Albus undoubtedly knows exactly what we’re doing right now,’ remarked Severus with a roll of his eyes.
‘Well, let’s give him a thrill,’ replied Ariah, as she once again pressed her lips against his in a deep soul kiss that sent shudders through him.
