Chapter 20
--
Potions the next morning was hell. Snape was in a particularly bad mood and taking it out on the
Gryffindors. They’d lost one hundred and
fifteen points since class had started a half an hour ago. This weren’t looking up either, and there
was still an hour of class to go. They
were making a mild healing draught that worked well for ‘bruises and the
occasional scrape’, or so the book said.
Raithos and Draco were at their usual table in the back of
the room, snickering quietly whenever another unsuspecting Gryffindor was
ambushed by the irate potions master.
Their potion was nearly complete.
Snape had let them in a half and hour early to begin their potion, and
they were an efficient team. With
Draco’s tutoring, Raithos had turned into quite the accomplished potions
maker. Nowhere near to Draco’s level,
of course, but he did well enough to beat out the rest of the class for
second. They’d been watching Snape for
the past ten minutes, taking bets on who his targets would be. They’d correctly guessed his outbursts at
Lavender, Pavrati, and Seamus, and were anxiously awaiting his next move. He’d been circling around Ron for the past
ten minutes, just waiting for him to mess something up. Since Neville’s unfortunate death, Ron had
become the preferred potions whipping boy.
“Oh, here it goes!
He just put in two newt’s eyes instead of one! The whole thing’s gonna blow!” Draco whispered
gleefully. Sure enough, the cauldron in
front of the red-head exploded, blue slime covering half of the Gryffindors and
one seething professor.
“Weasley! Of
all the idiotic things…do you even have a brain in that god-awful red
head of yours?!” Snape yelled, flicking his wand to clean himself off. He left the rest of the Gryffindors to fend
for themselves.yes"> And you will not be returning to this class! I don’t care what the Headmaster
says. You are a danger to the other
snts!nts! Detention with Filch for two
weeks! Get out of my sight!”
Ron gathered his things and all but ran out of the room.
--
Pansy and Blaise were sitting on the extra couch in Raithos
and Draco’s room. Draco was opposite
them, lounged on his favorite couch in silver silk pajamas and a black silk
robe. They were presenting him with the
list of potentials froher her houses.
“Where’s Raithos?” Pansy asked.
“In the shower, then getting ready for bed. So, what do you have for me?” Draco asked,
running a hand through his platinum hair and settling down even more on the
plush couch.
Blaise cleared his throat.
“Ok. We talked to Larissa Rey
earlier. Good possibility there, she’s
got a good head on her shoulders.
Should have been a Slytherin, that one.
She’ll head down here tomorrow at eight. She’s already trained in the Dark Arts, Slytherin pureblood line
and all.
“Terry Boot, surprisingly.
He’s a full-blooded wizard, says he’s smart enough to know which side
will win and wants to make sure he’s on it.
He’ll be down after Rey.”
“Isn’t he the head boy?” Draco asked incredulously. Having the Head Boy on their side would be
incredible. And Boot had a lot of
influence with the other houses, especially the rest of Ravenclaw.
“Lisa Turpin we’re not so sure about. She probably won’t get past you,” Pansy
said, picking up where Blaise had left off.
“She’s a bit too flighty. I
don’t think she’d be able to sth thh the Unforgiveables.
“Susan Bones was a big shock. Apparently her and her aunt have some sort of loyalty to ‘Harry
Potter’ from fifth year. Something
about a trial almost gone bad. But she
says he deserves her loyalty, even if he’s technically not the same
person. Raithos should pay extra
attention when he delves into her mind though, just because it’s really strange
for a Hufflepuff to turn on their house like that.”
“Good point,” Draco said.
The list was coming along nicely so far. And to have a Hufflepuff on their side would be terrific. She’d bring more of them over, house loyalty
and all. “What about the Gryff spy?”
“He seems genuine Draco, but we should be wary of him. He’s coming down tonight, around
midnight. I really think you and
Raithos should meet him together,” Blaise said.
“Bit of a shock, who it is, isn’t it?” Draco asked. He was a little miffed that Raithos hadn’t
told him yet. But he wasn’t a Slytherin
for nothing, he would manipulate his two friends into giving up the information
easily enough.
“Yes, it is. When he
came and told me he’d do it, I just about fainted,” Blaise said with a
smirk.
“Who is it Blaise? I
still don’t know,” Pansy said eagerly.
‘Oh too easy, I thought it’d take a few more minutes at
least!’
“Well…” Blaise began.
--
“How can he be getting away with this Sev?” Remus asked
quietly. He was once again in Snape’s
private rooms, trying to make sense of all the drama that had cropped up since
halfway through the summer. He’d been
there almost every night since the first time they’d talked. Snape was turning out to be a wonderful
listener, interjecting his opinions or thoughts here and there, but for the
most part, allowing Remus to work his way through the mess on his own.
“He’s not Rem, we’re making sure he’s not. He’s deceived the world for so long, and
someone finally has the courage to make him stop. Raithos is so strong, and so smart. Dumbledore won’t get away with this. Raithos and his father are making sure of it,” Snape answered,
looking up at Remus. He’d been writing
an owl to Lucius when the werewolf had come in. Remus was now leaning against Snape’s writing desk, arms folded
and a worried expression on his face.
“I need to talk to him again, I need to apologize. I’ve been so blind.”
“He’ll understand.
He doesn’t hate you, Rem. Don’t
worry so much,” Snape said, rising from his chair to face the distressed werewolf
and wrapped his arms around him comfortingly.
“Thank you,” Remus whispered, lifting his head to look at
Snape, faces just inches apart.
--
“But Ra he’ he’s a fucking half-blood!”
“Co, stop being su sno snob. Just because he isn’t a pureblood doesn’t mean we can’t use
him. Besides, we’ve got to keep some of
them around…you pureblood snobs can’t keep marrying each other forever. You’ll all have six fingers and three eyes
if you don’t bring in fresh blood every now and then. Besides, if we don’t keep them around, who are we going to be
superior to?”
Draco huffed. “I
know all that. But still. He’s bloody annoying.”
“Yes, but he’s usable.
And that is a good thing for us.”
“Yeah, yeah.”
Draco was pacing the room, black robe billowing behind him,
reminiscent of a certain potions master.
Raithos was sprawled out on their couch, hair still damp from his
shower. He sighed and played with the
edge of his own black robe he’d thrown on over black silk pajama bottoms.
‘Must be proper for the visitor after all. Wouldn’t do to have him barge in here with
us naked.’
Raithos stood and walked over to Draco and cupped his cheek
gently. He touched his forehead to
Draco’s and looked into his eyes intently.
“You know it’s necessary.
I know you do. You are too
intelligent not to,” he whispered, placing a gentle kiss on his lover’s
lips. “You ready for this, love?”
Draco sighed and closed his eyes briefly. When he opened them again, they were a cold
gray. His mask was back up.
Raithos grinned and kissed him lightly. “No matter how many times I see you do that,
it never gets any less impressive.”
“Of course not. I’m
a Malfoy. I’m always
impressive.”
“Ah, there’s the Co I know and love,” Raithos said cheekily.
A knock sounded on their door.
“Come in,” Raithos said loudly, turning to face the door
with his arms crossed over his chest.
Draco took his position at Raithos’ right, looking suitably
intimidating.
A figure stepped into the room hesitantly, bowing his head
as he faced the two teens.
“Hello, Seamus.”
