Chapter 20: Leaving on a Red Train
The next two weeks were quiet and
comfortable, or at least as quiet as one could hope for with Severus Snape and
Harry Potter attempting to share Marvin. The muggle’s presence tended to bring
the clashing pair together more times in a day then they used to see each other
in the whole summer for the seven previous years. They were learning to
tolerate one another, if only to keep Marvin from lecturing them on the virtues
of forgiveness and understanding. Unknown to Marvin, Snape and Harry had
reached an agreement, which stated that they would keep their wands holstered
as long as nothing was said about fan fiction and there was no mention of the
‘Harriette Incident’.
Plenty of other people were trying
to get time in with Marvin before he left. The Ministry of Magic decided to
award another medal to Marvin for saving Harry once again as well as granting
one to Snape for saving the ‘Savior’s Savior’. Minister Zabini thought it
prudent to deliver these in a private ceremony at Hogwarts to avoid asking for
more trouble. Lucius and Arthur were allowed supervised visitation, usually
governed by Draco (who tended to monopolize Marvin’s time and was beginning to
understand his father’s obsession with muggle contraptions). Justin and Ginger
followed Marvin everywhere and managed to ward off unwanted attention the few
times that he decided to venture into Hogsmeade with Harry and Sirius. Justin
tended to stay close to Marvin, chatting happily, but Ginger clung to the
shadows. Anyone who was paying attention may have seen some interesting
glances coming from a certain Potions Master directed towards a certain auror
with strawberry blonde hair. Ron…well Ron only visited twice during those two
weeks, which was understandable considering how badly he began to blush
whenever he spotted Snape. Since Marvin was spending a good deal of time with
Snape (or Snape simply wasn’t letting Marvin out of his sight), Ron decided to
limit his contact.
There were
a few innocent jinxes tossed around during meals, but most of them were for
Marvin’s benefit. Everyone enjoyed the excitement he displayed whenever the
mildest of magics were performed. Still, the closer it came to time for Marvin
to return to school, the more he began to wonder how he would put up with the
mundane muggle world after a summer of magic. Everyone tried to reassure him
that he would always be welcomed at Hogwarts…hell the flat out told him that he
would be drug back by his ears to visit…but there was still that nagging fear
in the back of his mind. There was that tiny voice questioning whether is
could all really have been real.
______________________________________________________________________
Marvin gazed morosely into his
teacup, wishing that there was some way to drag the summer out for just a bit
longer. It was no use though. He was leaving on the Hogwarts Express in a few
hours and he had no idea when he would see Harry again. The amiable wizard,
who he now considered a close friend, was constantly reassuring him that they
would see plenty of each other that next summer and he promised to owl often.
He had received similar sentiments from many of the witches and wizards he had
met. Even Severus had promised to keep in touch and went so far as to admit
that ‘the dungeons might be a bit empty’ without him. Still, deep down Marvin
had to wonder how long it would be before all his new friends got over the
novelty of having a muggle around. He couldn’t protect himself properly
(without a silver platter on hand), he couldn’t play Quidditch when Harry got
bored, he couldn’t actually help Severus with his brewing (though he’d slice
monkey brains any day of the week to spend time Severus), and, most
importantly, most of the time he had no idea what everyone was talking about.
If it hadn’t been in the Harry Potter books, well then he was clueless.
“Knut for your thoughts,” Harry
said softly from the chair across from him.
Marvin sipped his tea and regarded
a Harry with a wary eye. “Just wondering if I’ll wake up tomorrow morning and
find out that this whole summer was a dream.”
He felt guilty when Harry’s
expression became a bit hurt. “I’m really going to miss you. Would you like
to come visit for your holidays?”
Marvin offered a weak nod. “I
suppose I could tag along with Justin. He and Ginger will be coming to London
for Christmas and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind dropping me off here.”
Harry snorted. “Of course he
won’t mind! He’d have to stay with you unless he brought you here and even
then he’ll probably only be gone for a day or two. You are to remain
constantly protected by three wizards or witches until the final Death Eaters
are brought in.”
“Do we know who wizard number
three is yet?” Marvin was rather curious to find out who else would be sharing
his home for the year. Justin was good fun, but Ginger was a bit uptight. He
had some plans to remedy this however…if he could get Severus to visit a few
times throughout the year.
“Not yet. He’s supposed to meet
you on the train today.” Harry stood up and Marvin followed suit. “Why don’t
you go spend some time with Severus? I’ll start rounding everyone up to gather
outside so you can take your time with goodbyes.”
“Sure. How long do I have,”
Marvin asked softly. He almost didn’t want to go to Severus’ labs. The wizard
had been rather quiet and closed off for the past few days and while Marvin
could appreciate the man’s need to self protect, he wished he would have kept
talking to him opening and warmly.
“Take about and hour and a half
and then come out to the Quidditch pitch. We’ll all have a picnic lunch out there
I think.” Harry smiled brightly at him and shooed him out the door.
Marvin
heaved a deep sigh and tried to memorize the look and feel of every corridor as
he made his way to the dungeons.
________________________________________________________________________
Severus sighed as he stirred the
softly simmering cauldron of Pepper-Up potion. Marvin was leaving and he just
wasn’t certain how he should react. He had become accustomed to the young man
being close at hand whenever he felt the need for conversation, a game of
chess, or an extra pair of hands for chopping. True, he could live without the
pranks, but Marvin was young and Potter was a bad influence. Knowing that he
could visit the muggle whenever he wanted didn’t seem to help either.
“What is wrong with me,” he
muttered and dragged a hand down his face.
There was no reason to feel like
this! He could play chess and have tea with Albus whenever he wanted. Granger
was bearable if he was in the mood for intelligent conversation and, she was much
better versed in magical topics than any muggle ever would be. It was
unbelievable that he should be this attached to the man.
Just admit it, Sev. It feels
good to know that someone is that loyal to you. You know if push came to
shove, Marvin would probably even choose you over Potter.
“I would never do something like
that,” Severus whispered, stirring in a clockwise motion.
And why not? Because you care
that much about him! Think, Sev, THINK! You are willing to put up with Potter
for that muggle. You must really care about him, pranks and all.
“He just loves those stupid
books. He’ll outgrow them eventually and me along with them.”
You know he won’t. Those books
and the way he chose to interpret them simply made him adore you. Face it, you
are stuck with him.
“Damn you J.K. Rowling,” he spat,
but his venom was half-hearted at best.
Severus sighed and took the
cauldron off the flame just as he heard a timid knock at the door. Just the
thought of it being Marvin lightened his dark thoughts. “Enter.”
“Hello, Severus. I thought I
might come and spend some time with you, if you don’t mind.” Marvin was
looking everywhere but at him and Severus knew immediately that something was
wrong.
He motioned for the muggle to join
him at one of the many desks and conjured a tea tray. “What is bothering you,
Marvin?”
Marvin slipped into a chair and
Severus was struck by the deep sorrow that he saw in his friend’s blue eyes.
“I’m just not ready to leave. I can’t shake the feeling that if I go home this
will all have been a dream.”
Severus frowned. That was almost
what he had been feeling in some ways. He was afraid to admit that he cared
about Marvin and the young muggle’s affection because he was positive that he
would receive such attentions from no one else. Affection. Yes, he felt a
great deal of affection for Marvin in return, but also there was a fierce
protectiveness to his feelings. He had been hard pressed not to kill the Death
Eater who had threatened his friend at the banquet. Marvin…well Marvin was
like family now to him…or at least like what he thought a decent family member
should be like. His true family had been no example to go by.
“Marvin…” Severus started slowly,
unsure if he wanted to go out on this limb. “I have come to care about you a
great deal over this summer, not only as a friend, but as a family member of
sorts. I never had a sibling, but if I had had a little brother…well I imagine
that the Fates would have happily cursed me with someone as friendly, kind,
generous, and brave as you and a friend of a Potter to boot.”
“I’m touched…and honored, Severus,
but I just don’t understand…” Marvin came to a stuttering stop as Severus held
up his hand.
“Family is forever, Marvin,
whether good or bad. You have managed to…endear yourself to me and I rather
think it’s too late for you to get out of it now.” Severus resisted the urge
to hold his breath or bolt from the room as Marvin stood gaping at him.
When he did speak at last, his
voice was thick and there was a suspicious sheen to his eyes. “Severus, I
haven’t had any family for a very long time and I would be honored to be
considered your brother.”
It was as though a great weight
fell from his chest then and Severus did something that was rather unexpected
at that moment. He grabbed Marvin into a fierce hug, which was warmly
returned.
Ron Weasley burst into the lab
then and Severus stiffened at his appearance. The redhead stood with his mouth
gaping for a moment and blinked several times. “I knew it! I knew it!
Marvin, I didn’t know about you…but…well…that’s fine, but I KNEW IT!”
Severus released Marvin from his
hug, but kept one arm wrapped around the young man’s shoulders. Marvin was
shaking his head and Severus could feel his body shaking with silent laughter.
“You knew what, Mr. Weasley?”
“I knew you were gay!”
Severus
froze and glanced down to see Marvin’s gobsmacked expression. He then glanced
back at Weasley’s triumphant look of glee and simply couldn’t help it. He
broke down laughing.
________________________________________________________________________
Once they managed to get Ron
calmed down, the redhead informed them that everyone was waiting out on the
Quidditch pitch to have lunch. Marvin allowed himself a wistful smile as they
made their way out of the castle. Severus thought of him as a brother. He
could definitely get used to that. Perhaps this would inspire the normally
acerbic wizard to spare his life once he set his latest plans into action. His
‘big brother’ needed someone special in his life and Marvin had his eye on the
perfect witch.
Ron sidled up next to him and
nudged him in the ribs. Leaning in close he whispered, “Sorry about that. I
hope I wasn’t interrupting anything intimate.”
Marvin rolled his eyes. “Ron, you
are absolutely hopeless. We were having one of those ultra rare moments in
which two extremely manly men were expressing their emotions.”
Marvin smiled as Ron’s eyes
flickered briefly to look at the darkly clothed wizard a few meters ahead of
them. “So he really isn’t gay?”
“I thought you had already managed
to figure that one out on your own…or were you holding out for a bisexual
Snape?” Marvin chuckled as his friend’s cheeks burned red. “I should have
known. Listen, Ron, we were just…I don’t know…he said he thought of me as a
brother. I was really…er”
“Touched?”
“Yeah. He knows I don’t have any
family besides my one crazy aunt. It meant a lot to me.” Marvin stared at the
ground in embarrassment and stiffened when Ron threw an arm around his
shoulders. People were doing that to him a lot lately.
“You know, Harry and I think of
you as family too. You can’t be friends with us and not end up as family.”
Marvin glanced up and had to smile in return to his friend’s cheeky grin. “Now
let’s hurry up. Harry has a surprise for you.”
When they got to the pitch the
first thing Marvin saw was Harry and the twins standing next to an odd basket
contraction with broomsticks around it. Off to the side, the rest of the
Weasley clan, Albus, Sirius, Remus, Tonks, and Severus were all pulling out
food from several picnic baskets. Harry ran forward and grabbed his hand with
a large smile, pulling him towards the odd basket. Everyone was paying
attention now and Severus suddenly seemed very interested in the basket.
Harry cleared his throat. “Marv,
Ron and I noticed that you seemed really interested in Quidditch and for a
while now we’ve been trying to figure out how to let you experience broom
flight when you lack the magic necessary to command a broomstick. We put our
heads together with the twins and…well we came up with this.”
Harry gestured grandly towards the
basket. Marvin began to inspect it more closely and saw that it was just the
right size for him to sit in. Four brooms were tethered securely to it and
there even seemed to be some sort of safety harness in the basket itself. He
gave Harry a questioning look.
“You see, at first I thought I
could just give you a ride on my broom, but Ron and I tested the theory and
discovered that they’re simply not capable of handling two grown men.” Harry
grinned sheepishly and Ron shifted uncomfortably. Marvin got the impression
that someone had fallen off the broom during this experimental flight.
“Mr. Potter,” Severus hissed.
Marvin turned to see the tall wizard striding towards them. “If you think I am
going to allow you to take Marvin up into the air in that thing, you are sorely
mistaken!”
Harry’s eyes narrowed. “Nothing’s
going to happen to him. We’ve tested it out several times. It carried Sirius
just fine.”
“Yes, well bully for Black, but I
refuse to let you take my…”
“Your what,” Harry asked in
surprise.
Ron was chuckling and Marvin shot
him a furious look. He glanced over at Snape and nearly fainted when he saw
the openly fond look the man was giving him. “My little brother, Potter. Do
you have a problem with that?”
Harry’s eyebrows shot up under his
fringe. “No, not at all.”
Albus stepped forward then.
“Severus, I hope it will put you at ease to know that I have personally
inspected this contraption and added a strong weightless charm to it for good
measure.”
Marvin watched in amusement for a
few moments as Severus fumed. When the wizard looked his way again, Marvin
gave him a beseeching look. Severus rolled his eyes and whipped out his wand.
“I’m adding unbreakable charms to those tethers before you even step foot in
that basket.”
No one laughed. No one
commented. No one looked overtly surprised, but there were a few smug and
pleased faces in the crowd. When Severus was finished, Marvin promptly hopped
into the basket, feeling like a small child going on his first rollercoaster
ride. Harry and Sirius took the brooms on Marvin’s left and right. Ron went
behind him and George took the front. Just before they left the ground, Marvin
noticed that Collin Creevy snapping pictures left and right with a broad grin.
Good. He would never have to
forget this day. Ever.
His
stomach did a little flip-flop as he smoothly floated into the air. The four
wizards hovered a few feet above him and he had a clear 360-degree view of the
sky. It was amazing. Words simply couldn’t do justice to the intense thrill
of feeling the wind whistling through his hair and briskly caressing his face.
Everyone wonders what it is to fly, how it would feel to have wings and be a
free resident of the heavens. It wasn’t wings and it wasn’t a broom, but
Marvin still felt as though he was soaring on his own power, gliding along with
his friends. He would never play Quidditch, but such compensation wasn’t too
shabby. No, it wasn’t too shabby at all.
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry glared at the red steam
engine for a moment as though his sheer force of will could send it away for
another time. It remained, and Marvin was still hugging his way through the
Weasleys. He gripped his gift tightly for a moment. He had wanted to have an
entire photo album ready for Marvin, but it would have to wait until Harry
could add the pictures from today. There was also Snape’s recent suggestion
that they all find photographs from when they were younger to add, just to give
a bit more of themselves to their favorite muggle. It seemed like a good idea,
and so today he simply had a large framed copy of their whole group standing
with Marvin and Minister Zabini, Marvin’s medal hanging proudly about his
neck. He also had a copy of the picture with just Marvin and Severus in a
matching frame. He knew that his friend would like it before, but after the
recent revelation as to how Snape really felt about Marvin…well he thought the
picture would be even more special.
Auror Justin was waiting by the
train with a smile and his sister was skulking in the shadows looking eager to
leave. Harry looked about at Marvin’s well-wishers and realized that Lucius
was missing. He pulled Draco to his side. “Where is your dad? I didn’t think
he would miss this.”
Draco’s lips pulled in a secretive
smile. “Something came up, but he said he would visit Marvin soon to make it
up to him.”
Harry didn’t know what to make of
that, but he shrugged and worked his way over to Snape, who was holding a
small, unfamiliar barn owl. When Marvin approached them, Harry felt a tiny tug
in his gut. Christmas couldn’t come fast enough.
Marvin smiled warmly. “I’m really
going to miss both of you. Don’t forget your promises to write.”
Severus cleared his throat. “Yes,
well…I’ve acquired something to aid you in that area.”
Harry watched as the Potions
Master held the barn owl out to Marvin, whose eyes were wide as saucers. “My
own owl? Does he have a name?”
“She, and no she doesn’t. I left
that up to you.” Snape was allowing a small smile.
Marvin looked contemplative for a
moment. “Nightshade…I’m going to name her Nightshade.”
Harry chuckled. “That’s a great
name, Marv. Here these are for you as well.”
Harry watched eagerly as Marvin
maneuvered his new owl to his shoulder and quickly opened the gift. Harry knew
instantly that the man loved the pictures. “Thank you so much…both of you…for
everything. This was really the best summer of my life.”
The engine whistle sounded then
and Harry felt panicked for a moment. He wouldn’t see his friend until
Christmas! He and Snape quickly guided the muggle to his escort.
“Have a safe trip, little
brother,” Snape said softly and pulled Marvin into a quick hug.
When Harry got over his shock, he
too decided to hug Marvin. “Christmas can’t come soon enough, Marv. Write to
us soon.”
Justin and Ginger quickly ushered
Marvin away and soon the Hogwarts Express was steaming away into the distance.
Snape and Harry stood side by side in silence for a long while until a thought
occurred to Harry. “Severus, did the Ministry ever decide on a third escort
for Marvin?”
Harry was not reassured by the
slight twitch of Snape’s lips. One of those thin, black brows arched upwards.
“What? You mean Draco didn’t tell you?”
Harry
groaned. “You have got to be kidding me.”
______________________________________________________________________
Marvin sat staring out the train
window, grasping his new photos close to his chest. Nightshade hooted softly
and he reached up to gently caress the feathers on her chest. Justin was
sitting across from him with an annoying grin plastered on his face. How could
he be happy at a time like this?
Just then, Ginger entered the
compartment. “Marvin, your third escort has arrived.”
Marvin looked over at the hooded
figure beside the auror and his breath caught when he spotted a familiar,
snake-headed cane.
Not Lucius. Not Lucius. Not
Lucius.
The hood fell back to reveal the
smirking visage of Lucius Malfoy and Marvin had to bite the inside of his cheek
to keep from either groaning or laughing. Harry was probably having a fit
right about now. “Hello, Marvin. Isn’t this wonderful? We can spend the rest
of the year finishing all those discussions that Draco kept interrupting.
Marvin nodded mutely. He shook
his head with a bemused smile as Lucius slid into the seat beside him and
quickly picked up the thread of their last conversation on remote controls.
One thing was for certain: Lucius would make sure that Marvin got back to
Hogwarts for Christmas, Easter, and even St. Patrick’s Day if it meant getting
decent lectures on ‘muggle contraptions’.
Thank you J.K. Rowling. Thank
you for everything!
~The End~
A/N: Thank you so much to everyone who has
reviewed. I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing
it. If you’re interested, keep your eyes peeled for the sequel. I will
probably start posting in a couple weeks as my school schedule allows. You
have all been great and can I hear a ‘HELL YEAH’ for this being the first story
that I’ve managed to complete? HELL YEAH! Love you all. Until next time…
