Sweet Freedom
James only looked on in mild amusement as the woman who brought his dinner screamed bloody murder and ran from the room in a panic. He found it ironic that someone who worked for Voldemort would have such a reaction to a little blood. “Ok, maybe a lot of blood,” he mumbled to himself as he looked down at the now stiff corpse.
That was when he noticed that the door to his room had been left wide open. He moved silently toward the door to poke his head out cautiously and look around. It came as no surprise that the hallway was deserted. Voldemort had purposefully put him in an unused part of Riddle Manor. And as his now deceased visitor had said; nobody wanted to visit the quote “wild animal” being kept in that room.
He slipped out into the hallway and easily melded into the shadows. That was one major advantage of his elf heritage. He could avoid being seen when he wished.
The dark haired man made his way to the end of the hall without making a single sound. He paused only a moment not sure of which way to go. The hair on the back of his neck stood straight up as he noticed a guard walking toward him. He was probably coming to see what all the screaming was about. James knew he couldn’t let the guard see the body. That would raise the alarm much too soon.
Moving like a predator on the hunt James followed behind the guard patiently waiting for him to pause. The very second the man stopped to look around James pounced; snapping the guards neck in one fluid motion.
A rather pleased look appeared on his face as he looked down on the still form. While most wizards relied almost entirely on magic James knew things like just where to apply pressure on someone’s neck to snap their spinal cord before they even knew what hit them. It was a skill that came in quite handy at times. After all, an enemy can’t cast a curse on you if they’re dead before they can even think of one.
He quickly moved back into the shadows. Fortunately for him the place was mostly deserted. He didn’t run into anyone else until he reached the ground floor. Voldemort always kept those doors well guarded. The two guards at the door were removed easily in the same manner as the first he had run into.
With a wide evil grin James stepped out into the night air and inhaled deeply. Taking one last look at the hell hole that had been his prison for so long; he ran. He ran as fast as his legs would carry him and headed into the surrounding woods. Once he felt safe he finally allowed himself to collapse in the soft cold grass under a tree.
He was weak, but alive. A month of not being able to keep any food down had taken its toll. But as usual James was driven by his incredibly stubborn nature, and was still standing long after any ordinary wizard would have given up and died.
Summoning up what little strength he had left, James climbed up into the tree so he could look at the stars. He couldn’t help but laugh a little when he heard Voldemort’s screams echo softly from the manor. They had finally discovered he was gone. It didn’t matter now. He was determined to not let them find him this time.
Once he had a fairly good idea of where he was he started walking. Dawn was approaching when he finally found his way to a muggle road. To James’ surprise and amusement it wasn’t long before a car pulled to the side of the road. The young man dressed in a gray business suit rolled down his window. “Do you need a ride?” he asked.
James nodded and crawled into the passenger seat. “You look bloody awful!” the man exclaimed with wide eyes.
“Yea, I was lost in the woods for a few days,” James lied. He hoped the muggle would buy it. There was no way he could tell the man what really happened to him.
“I think it’s straight to the hospital for you mate,” the man said as he headed for London.
James tried to stay awake, but his exhaustion quickly overwhelmed him. The next thing he was aware of was being picked up out of the car by a man in a nurse’s uniform. “This bloke’s as light as a feather,” the nurse commented as he laid him down on a stretcher.
James was wheeled inside and asked the usual questions like his name and address. When a woman asked for the phone number of someone they could contact he couldn’t help but smile, causing everyone around him to look at him funny. Most wizards didn’t even know how a telephone worked, let alone had one. But Lily, who was muggle born, had insisted they get one, mostly for instances like the one he was currently in. He gave the woman the number and passed out again.
Lily glanced at the clock on the bedside table. She sighed with frustration as it was only ten minutes later from the last time she had looked. She sat up and looked out of the window. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon to mark yet another day that she was without her husband. It had been thirty nine days since he was captured.
She made her way downstairs to start breakfast. She had just grabbed the frying pan when the phone rang. The pan was dropped and forgotten as she ran to answer. Very few people had their number, and even fewer were likely to call at this early hour.
Lily picked up the phone and put the receiver to her ear slowly; almost afraid to answer. “Hello.”
“Is this Mrs. Potter?” a woman on the other end asked.
“Yes,” she answered her voice a little shaky.
“This is Marianne from London Hospital. “I’m calling to let you know that your husband James was brought in early this morning.”
“Is he… I mean is he ok?” she asked her voice cracking a little.
“He’s in fair condition.”
“I’ll be right there!” she cried and hung up.
Completely forgetting about breakfast, Lily ran upstairs going from room to room waking everyone up. “James has been found!” she yelled over and over again.
Remus and Sirius rubbed the sleep from their eyes and stumbled out into the hallway. “What are you going on about?” the werewolf mumbled sleepily.
“It’s James!” she cried out again hugging her friend tightly. “He’s in a muggle hospital!”
“You’re kidding! How did he end up there?” Remus looked at her with a shocked expression.
“I don’t know, and I don’t care.”
She dragged both men downstairs, just barely giving them enough time to pull their clothes on. Once Lily, Remus, and Sirius were all dressed and downstairs they apparated to the hospital’s back alley. Lily practically ran inside to the reception desk. The woman at the desk told her what room James was in and had a nurse escort them up.
“He is ok isn’t he?” she asked the nurse. “He isn’t seriously injured or anything…?”
The older woman smiled. “No dear, he seems to only be suffering from malnutrition and dehydration. Though he does show symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. Once he’s feeling better someone from the psych department is going to come and examine him.”
The nurse stopped at James’ room and motioned for them to go in. He was lying in the bed his eyes closed. “Looks like he’s asleep again,” the nurse commented.
“Sleeping…? I wasn’t sleeping,” he spoke softly his eyes still closed.
Lily ran to him as fast as a six month pregnant woman could run and she hugged him tight. “Don’t ever do that to me again!” she cried, tears streaming down her cheeks.
They waited for the nurse to leave before anyone said much more. Remus got up and closed the door making sure no one would be within earshot. Sirius sat down on James’ other side leaning against him a little. “So, how did you escape?” the werewolf asked as he sat in the other empty chair on the other side of the room.
“What took you so long?” Sirius sighed gently nuzzling him.
James sighed and told them about the collar, and how he had gotten it off. Then he told them about walking out to the road and the car stopping for him. “If you weren’t lying in a hospital bed I’d smack you,” Lily sighed. “Leave it up to you to nearly get yourself killed.”
“Can we please save this argument for later,” he pleaded looking her in the eye. “It was risky, but it worked.”
“I for one am just glad that you’re all right,” Remus smiled moving over to lean against the foot of the bed. “Would I be correct in assuming you don’t want to see Albus for a while?”
James nodded. “I really don’t want to be grilled for information just yet. I know he cares in his own odd way, but he tends to have a one track mind.”
“Any idea when we’ll be allowed to take you home?” Lily asked affectionately playing with his hair.
“Should be able to go home in a day or two. But that depends on what their psychologists think.” He sighed and rolled his eyes. “Talking to them is going to be rather interesting.”
“Go easy on them,” Sirius grinned.
“I will,” he grinned back and laughed softly. “I don’t have the energy to talk circles around them just yet.”
“We had better go and let you rest,” Lily sighed as she kissed his forehead. “Come on guys. We’ll come back bright and early tomorrow morning.”
Remus and Sirius stood up with her and moved toward the door. “See you tomorrow mate,” Remus waved goodbye.
“See you,” he nodded.
With a deep sigh James rolled over onto his side. He was exhausted, but he didn’t want to sleep. Every time he closed his eyes the memories came flooding back and played in his mind like a little movie.
