Chapter 20 Lessons
When Nina woke on Monday morning Kali was there, fussing and chattering away to herself. She watched her for a little while.
The elf obviously was not yet aware that her Mistress was awake.
Nina listened as Kali sang to herself. It was an odd little song and terribly out of key by the sound of it. Nina giggled.
“Ooo!” The little elf let out. “You is giving me a right start Miss.”
Nina giggled more.
“You is not to be laughing at Kali. Kali is nearly having heart attacks.”
The elf was grinning, so Nina new that she was not really cross at her.
“Sorry Kali. I couldn’t help.”
“I knows you couldn’t Miss. Kali is not minding when yous laughs. I likes it.” The elf climbed up on the bed next to Nina.
“I likes it when yous laughs too.” She giggled as she gave Kali a big hug.
“Is you is making fun of Kali?”
“Yep.”
Kali stood on the bed with her hands on her hips.
Nina knelt up and put her hands on her hips.
“You is a cheeky young madam does you know that?”
“Yep.”
The next Nina knew she was dropped into a bath full of cold water.
“Aaah!” She screamed as she jumped out of the bath shivering.”
“Kali. You know that wasn’t fair.” Her teeth were chattering.
Kali stood waiting with a warm towel and a big mischievous grin on her face.
“Yep.”
Nina’s mouth formed a large O for a moment before they both collapsed onto the floor laughing.
Kali calmed down first.
“I think you is best to be getting a warm shower now Miss.”
Nina, teeth still chattering didn’t argue.
She re entered the bedroom feeling a lot warmer to find that Kali had laid her out some clothes.
“Thanks Kali. Oh, and I promise I won’t make fun of you again.”
Kali looked at her.
“I wouldn’t dare.” Nina told her as she pulled on a dark green knee length skirt and a matching jumper with silver piping around the neck, hen and sleeves. ‘Urgh. Not my colour.’ But she didn’t want to offend Kali so she said nothing.
Kali did her hair for her in a French braid with a dark green clasp. Even her shoes were dark green.
A happy Nina left a happy Kali behind as she headed out of the dungeons for breakfast.
The hall was full when she walked in.
Severus immediately noticed that she was wearing Slytherin colours and his chest puffed up slightly as he appraised her. He approved of this outfit.
Draco had also noticed. And approved.
“Hi Nina. You okay?”
Ron, Harry and Hermione had seen her and called to her.
“Hiya you lot. Yeah I’m fine.”
She stayed and chatted with them for a few minutes before heading up to the top table and Severus.
“Good morning Miss Manohel. I trust that you slept well.”
Nina pinked up when he said that.
“Yes thanks.” Her voice came out high and squeaky when she answered him.
Severus knew why.
“The Head master and I have decided that it would be better if you were to sit in on some of the classes today. They will hopefully keep you out of mischief.”
Nina looked at him slyly.
“If you say so.”
Severus did not like the gleam in Nina’s eyes but said nothing.
Nina was pleased that she was going to get to go to classes. She hadn’t been looking forward to being at a loose end again.
“Which class am I having first? I know some maths and I can read and write pretty good. I had to leave school when I was ten though so I‘ll probably be behind everybody here.”
Severus looked down at the apprehensive expression on Nina’s face. She clearly did not know how different things were at Hogwarts compared to muggle schools.
“I would not worry about being behind in these classes. You will do just fine.”
“You think so? So what am I having first then?”
Professor MacGonagall leaned across to her. “You are with me first.”
“Cool. What do you teach?”
“Transfiguration.”
“Oh.” Was all Nina managed.
She leaned over to Severus.
“We only did adding , subtractions and divisions at my school.” She whispered. “I don’t know how to do any more than that. What am I gonna do? She’ll think I’m thick.”
Severus mouth was twitching so much that he could not answer her for fear of laughing.
“Its not funny.” She told him desperately. “Can’t I do something else instead?”
Minerva had actually heard Nina’s whispered conversation with the Potions Master and leaned back to her again.
“Nina. My class has nothing to do with maths. Do not worry. You shall be well ahead of everyone. I promise you.”
“Right. Okay then.”
Nina was glad that this Transfigury-thingy wasn’t some kind of advanced maths. But she was equally sure that she would not be good at it. Whatever it was.
She sat quietly eating her breakfast as Severus once again tried unsuccessfully to glare at all of the students whilst trying to keep a smile from appearing on his face. In the end he gave up and just ate.
Nina had finished eating and sat fidgeting as she waited for Professor MacGonagall to finish eating and talking with the Headmaster.
Severus stood to leave the table.
“Enjoy your classes Miss Manohel.” He told her before leaving to prepare for his own batch of dunderheads.
She watched as he stalked across the hall. His robes billowing behind him as he went.
Then she remembered. The whisker. The one she had plucked from Remus Lupin last night. She had left it in the pocket of her dress. ‘Oh No!.
“Professor MacGonagall?”
“Yes dear?”
“How long before I have to be in class?”
I am ready now. You are very eager.”
“Yes. Very. Err, I’ll be one minute. Is that okay?”
“Yes you may have your minute.”
Minerva assumed that Nina wanted to talk to Hermione, Harry and Ron and tell them that she would be attending classes.
Nina ran from the hall and to her rooms as quickly as she could.
“KALI. KALI.”
“Yes Miss. I is here. What is wrong Miss?”
“Kali. The dress I was searing last night. Where is it?”
“It has gone for cleaning Miss. Is something wrong?”
“Oh no. I left something in one of the pockets Kali. It was really important.”
Nina was heartbroken. ‘How was she going to help Mr Lupin now? They would have to get another and she didn’t know how to get in touch with him.’
“Is this what Miss was wanting?”
Nina looked at Kali to see her proudly holding up the whisker. The very same whisker that she had taken from Mr Lupin last night.
“Kali.” She grabbed the elf and hugged her. “Your wonderful. D’you know that?”
Kali ‘umphed’ a bit. Her mouth was buried in Nina’s chest. Once she was released Kali told her. “I is always checking pockets before sending thins down to laundry. I is good elf.”
“Kali, would you take care of it for me please? I have to go to class.”
Kali will Miss. You go now before you is late.”
Nina rushed back to the hall to find it was now empty.
‘Now what do I do. I don’t know where I’m supposed to be.’
Nina thought about Professor MacGonagall and she was standing in the configurations classroom.
“Miss Manohel. Nice of you to join us.”
“Sorry Professor. I wasn’t sure where to go.”
“Never mind. Take a seat. We were just about to begin.”
As Nina looked for an place Draco grabbed her arm.
He was sitting at his desk with Crabbe when she had appeared and told his friend to move somewhere else.
“Would you like to sit here?” He offered, indicating the empty seat beside him.
Nina quickly sat down. “Thanks.” She told him, smiling.
She was a bit embarrassed when she had suddenly appeared in the classroom like that. When Draco offered her the seat she was quick to take him up on it.
Nina didn’t notice the pretty blonde girl seated behind them.
Pansy Parkinson considered that she and Draco were an item. They had known each other since they were children. She knew that Draco played around. Mostly he would get what he wanted from a girl and leave them alone. He never had any problems getting what he wanted. What Draco did not do was chase any girl that caught his eye. But Pansy had noticed that since this new girl had entered Hogwarts that Draco had been different. He watched slyly at mealtimes. Even when she, Pansy was speaking to him or had put a hand on his thigh under the table. It was her that he was looking at. That girl. And Pansy did not like it. Mille had told her last week that Crabbe and Goyle had been grumbling about been left to study alone because Draco had gone off with this Jane or Nina or whatever her name was. She nudged the large girl sitting beside her.
When Millie looked at her she nodded towards Nina and Draco.
“Huh.” Millie grunted.
“I think we need to have a little chat with Miss smarty pants there.”
Millicent Bullistrode grinned. There was nothing she liked better than intimidating others. She was good at it too. There were not many who would dare to stand up to Millie. The boys included.
Professor MacGonagall began to tell the class of Griffindor/Slytherins how they would be transfiguring each other today.
“Everyone shall, hopefully, transfigure their partners head into that of a dog. Now repeat after me.”
“Cogito Ergo Caput est Canis.”
Nina looked around as the students all repeated the spell a few times.
“Has everyone got that?”
Most of them nodded.
“Very well. Take out your wands.”
Nina watched as they all held their wands in their hands.
Draco nudged her. “Where’s your wand?” He whispered.
“I haven’t got one.”
“Draco looked at her in surprise. “What do you mean you haven’t got one. Where is it?”
She sat with her hands in her lap. ‘This was a mistake. How could she pretend to be like the other students if she didn’t have a wand?’
“It isn’t anywhere. I don’t have one.”
“Is there a problem Miss Manohel?”
Nina lifted her head to see the Professor peering at her over her spectacles.
Once again she went pink. “I don’t have one.”
“You do not have what?”
“A wand Professor. I don‘t have a wand.” Nina was so embarrassed.
“It is not necessary in your case Miss Manohel. You may attempted the transfiguration in your own ‘unique’ way.” The Professor’s twitched slightly.
Nina knew this meant that it was okay. That it didn’t matter that she didn’t have a wand.
The Professor proceeded to show them all the correct wand movements and told them to begin.
She turned back to Draco with a grin. “Ready when you are.”
Draco had seen her when she had made those trees move, but he had not been close enough to know that she had not used a wand.
“If your sure.” He told her. “But how are you going to do this without a wand.”
Nina smiled as Draco’s head took on the form of Fang, Hagrid’s boarhound.
He had been taken by surprise.
“How did you do that?” He asked her. What everyone else heard was a series of woofs and yaps.
Nina changed him back.
Draco was stunned for a moment and then had an urge to scratch be hind his ears. With his foot of all things.
“How on earth did you manage that? And without a wand.”
Draco looked peeved and Nina wasn’t sure what to say to him.
“I erm, I…You try it on me now.”
Draco had seen the discomfort on her face. He was not used to being bested and he did not like it when it did happen. Narrowing his eyes he studied her for a moment. He did not want to alienate her so he smiled at her. Hoping she to keep in her good books. He still Liked Nina. And she could do wandless non-verbal. Now that was interesting.
“Okay. Time to get my own back.” He grinned at her.
Nina relaxed a bit when he smiled and waited for him to cast his spell.
He was saying the incantation perfectly and his wand movements were precise but Nina remained the same.
“I don’t understand it. Why is nothing happening?” Draco rarely had problems during his lessons and he was getting frustrated. This had never happened to him before.
Professor MacGonagall came over. “Do not worry Mr Malfoy. You are doing everything correctly. Miss Manohel. May I have a word. In private.”
Nina followed her to her desk at the front of the classroom expecting to be told that she was not suitable to be in this class.
Minerva spoke quietly to her.
“Nina. I know that you are not doing it intentionally, but I believe that you are blocking Mr Malfoy’s attempts at transfiguring you. Is it possible for you not to do so?”
“I am? I’m not doing it on purpose Professor. Maybe it would be best if he had a different partner? I don’t know how to…not to.”
“Well Mr Malfoy is doing everything correctly so perhaps if you were to concentrate on not blocking the spell. Discretely of course.”
Nina got the idea. “I’ll try Professor.”
“Good girl. Off you go.”
“Sorry Draco. Do you want to try again?”
Nina closed her eyes. She really didn’t want Draco to think he had failed at this so she thought about letting him change her.
When she opened her eyes a moment later to apologise for it not working her hair was in her eyes. Only it wasn’t her hair. It was the wrong colour for one thing.
Draco was grinning at her as he held up a small mirror.
Nina turned her gaze to it. Her head was big with shaggy hair hanging over the front of her face.
She laughed, only the noise that came out of her mouth was more of a deep huff followed by a yelp of surprise.
Draco lifted the spell. His eyes were watering with mirth.
“That is the first time I have ever heard a dog laugh.”
Nina joined him. She had to admit that she had looked and sounded funny.
They both took a bit of time to calm down and Draco told her. “You know, I like you. You’re a good sport.”
She blushed. AGAIN. “Yeah? Your not so bad either.”
“Another go?” He asked. One eyebrow raised mischievously.
Nina didn’t answer as Draco ran around the classroom and started yapping at the Professor.
He was now a complete Poodle. Pure white with a ‘pom pom’ trim.
Professor MacGonagall flicked her wand at him and nothing happened. She turned her gaze on Nina and as Nina looked at him and Draco who was on all fours in front of the whole class.
He got up and walked back to her.
“You’ll pay for that.”
Nina closed her eyes and concentrated on accepting the spell. When she opened them again and looked in the mirror she was horrified to see the must ugliest dogs head she could imagine.
Her head was so heavy she had to bring her hands up to support it. The head was bald except for a tuft of long coarse hair that stuck straight up in between its ears, which were short and seemed to protrude sideways.
Her face, Its face, had really long dewlaps and the muzzle was wide and short and she was drooling. Heavily. And she was snorting when she breathed.
Draco was hysterical now and could not utter the incantation to change her back again. He had collapsed onto his chair and had his head on the desk and was bashing the top of the desk with his hands every time she snorted.
She ended up having to change herself.
Sitting back down she poked him in the ribs. Hard.
“Ow!” He still could not stop laughing.
She poked him a bit harder.
“OW!”
He managed to calm down a bit but was still laughing and Nina couldn’t stop herself from laughing with him again.
By the time the class was over she was on cloud nine.
“I have never enjoyed a class this much.” Draco told her.
“It was fun wasn’t it. I didn’t know what to expect.”
“Well you can partner me in class anytime after this.”
Nina was happy and she beamed at him.
“I wonder what class I’m in next?“
“You’ll have to ask the Professor I‘m afraid. I’ve got Ancient Runes. Hopefully I shall see you later.”
Draco gave her a short bow, grabbed his bag and left.
Professor MacGonagall informed her that she would be staying with her for the next class. As it was first years, Griffindor/Slytherin again, Nina was to sit at the front and observe rather than participate.
“I do not think that first years will be up to competing with your particular talents Miss Manohel.” The Professor told her kindly.
“Alright Professor.”
Thirty minutes later and Nina was bored out of her skull. She had watched as the students Had practiced their wand movements over and over. Then repeated incantations over and over. She had even giggled quietly to herself at some of the results that had occurred when their spells had not worked correctly. But now it wasn’t funny or interesting any more. Sitting there twiddling her thumbs she stared into space.
Her mind drifted to last night when she had been taken to number twelve. She thought over all that had happened while she had been there. Their somewhat spectacular entrance, meeting all of those people. She had liked Mrs Weasley. She had hugged Nina and it was warm and homely. Nina had liked it. No one had ever done that with her before. She thought about the four Weasley sons who had been there. The older two had both been very handsome. And those twins. Ginny had said to be careful if she ever met them. That they were pranksters. Oh they were that okay. Nina liked them too.
And Tonks. She was brilliant. Nina thought for a little while that Tonks was like her. Had these same strange powers and felt disappointed when Severus had told her that they were not the same at all. Still, they had fun.
She let her mind drift over all the others who had come and said hello to her. Most of them she liked. Odd ones she wasn’t too sure of.
Then she remembered Remus Lupin. When they had first shook hands she had seen all of the pain and suffering that he had endured since he had been bitten by a werewolf as a small child. How he had tried to resist every time there was a full moon. How he had kept himself isolated from others for fear of harming them. Never being able to hold a permanent position when employers put two and two together because he was always absent during the full moon.
The panic in his eyes when she had taken him outside and shown him a moon that was bright and full. His concern had been entirely for her. The wolfish shock he had shown when he realised that she had turned into a werewolf. Playing and running around the garden. Then he become a bit too heated and she had to end it quickly. His remorse when he realised what he had tried to do.
Her mind drifted on to Severus. She remembered being angry and then he was kissing her. What came next came back into her mind with a rush and she reddened and squirmed in her seat. She was damp between her legs and she could feel a throbbing pulsing feeling down there as she recalled touching him and rubbing him, and then his hand had been in her knickers and….‘Oh Gods.’
“Nina. Nina. Are you alright?”
She looked up dazed. “Wha…what?”
“Are you ill dear? Do you want me to get Poppy?”
Minerva had noticed Nina was getting bored. A while later when she had looked back at her she had noticed that the girl was breathing rather heavily and she was flushed. A sheen of sweat stood out on her face.
“Who?”
“Madam Pomfrey. Would you like me to call her for you? You look unwell.”
Nina shook her head, trying to clear it.
“No. No, I’m fine. It’s just hot in here that’s all.”
Minerva did not think that it was overly warm in the classroom. Maybe the girl was coming down with something.
Well if you do not want me to call the nurse then you must go and see her yourself. She will probably be pleased to see you anyway.”
“Yes Professor.”
Nina was glad to be able to leave. She was embarrassed at what she had been thinking about in front of a class full of students. And it would be nice to see Poppy again.
When she closed the door behind her door she realised that, once again she had no idea of the way to anywhere in this place. Nina Apperated to Poppy. It was easier.
“Nina. Are you well?”
“Hello Poppy. Yes I am thanks. I thought it would be nice to see you if your not busy.”
“I was just going to have a cup of tea. Would you like to join me?”
“Yeah. But can I have milk please instead of tea?”
“Already in hand dear.” Poppy smiled. “I remember that you also do not like coffee or pumpkin juice.”
“Uggh. Pumpkins.”
Nina stayed and almost chatted Poppy’s ears off until it was time for lunch.
Poppy felt deeply for Nina though and was pleased that she had come to visit.
“I hope that you will come back to see me again Nina. I have missed you.”
“Thank you Poppy. I will, I promise.”
Nina gave the nurse a big hug and apperated to her rooms. She didn’t want to just appear in the Great Hall. She also hoped to speak to a certain Professor.
”Hello Miss. Is you wanting Kali for anything?”
“No thanks Kali. I’m going for lunch. Have you seen Professor Snape?”
“He is still shouting at his brainless buffoons and dunderheads Miss.”
“Ha Ha. His what?”
“That is what he is calling all students. And many other things not nice. He is not liking students and they is not liking him.”
“Okay Kali. I’ll see you later.” She really didn’t know what else to say to Kali about that and went to lunch.
The Potions Master did not make an appearance at lunch so Nina rushed her food so she could go and find him.
She had just left the hall when a pair of hands grabbed her and pulled her to the side and in through a door, slamming it behind them. Someone said Lumos.
Taken by surprise she stared at the pretty, blonde haired girl in front of her. But Nina was more concerned by the fact that someone was twisting her arm painfully behind her back.
“Get off me. Let go.” Nina struggled but whoever it was that was holding her was strong and she was hurting Nina’s arm.
The blonde girl smirked at her. “Not before we’ve had a little chat.”
“Chat? Will you get off me. Your hurting me.” Nina kept trying to twist round out of the painful grip but it wasn’t working.
“I just want to give you a little warning.”
“Warning. What about. I don’t even know who you are. Oww! Will you let go of my arm you great lug.”
Her arm was pushed further up and Nina was starting to feel sick.
“My name is Pansy and I would not call Millie names if I were you. She does not take kindly to them.”
And I don’t take kindly to having my arm broken so tell her to get off.
“In a moment. First you are to promise me that you will stay away from Draco.”
“WHAT? Why should I? He’s a friend. Ow. Stop it.”
“He is not your friend. I have seen you making eyes at him. Well if you think you can have him your wrong. He’s mine.”
Nina was getting mad now. She didn’t really understand what this girl was telling her. Nina had never had the chance to get into the boyfriend/girlfriend thing. She was only just learning about friends.
“I don’t know what you talking about. Me and Draco are friends. I’m not going to stop…Ow! will you stop that and let go.
Nina tried to kick the shins of the person behind her and found herself face down on the floor with the ‘lug’ straddled on her back and both of her arms pinned behind her now.
The lug leaned down to Nina’s ear.
“If you don’t behave I will break your arm. Maybe even both of them.”
She felt a foot connected sharply with the side of her ribs.
“Aaah!“ Nina wailed.
It must have been the blonde who had kicked her because she squatted down next to her.
“You will keep away from him. I do not give second warnings.
Nina had, had enough.
“Don’t you threaten me. I only want to be friends with him. Nothing more. Now either get this oaf of me or else.”
The ‘oaf’ grabbed Nina’s hair and pulled hard. Very hard. As she let go Nina’s head connected with the stone floor.
