Chapter 20
The gloves were a success. When Albus arrived on Christmas day afternoon, Kathy pulled them on and grabbed his hand, a worried look on her face.
Albus was startled and instinctively tried to withdraw from her, but Severus took hold of both their hands, holding them in place for several minutes as he watched Albus’ reaction.
“How?” The older wizard asked in a whisper.
Kathy turned to Severus, a big smile on her face, and such a look of gratitude in her eyes as she looked at him that he swallowed convulsively several times before releasing their hands and tearing his gaze from her.
Kathy removed one of the gloves and showed it to Albus. “My Christmas present from Severus, I can touch you, I’m not a leper any more Albus. Not with these.” She told him, her voice cracking with emotion. “They work, they really work.”
Severus explained the concept of the gloves to Albus, the charms he’d used and the potion he’d been experimenting with.
Kathy meanwhile touched the old wizard constantly, his hands, face, hands again, all the time regaling Severus for the miracle he’d afforded her. She couldn’t keep her hands to herself and Severus was becoming quite distracted by the fact that she was constantly reaching out to Albus. He barely contained the growl that threatened to erupt from his throat. The truth was he was jealous of the old wizard, which was stupid really since everyone knew that Dumbledore was gay, still, he wanted to be the one receiving her touches, he wanted her to stroke his cheek, hold his hand, not Albus’. The truth was that Severus Snape was smitten with Kathy, and no matter how much he attempted to deny it, no matter how often he denied it, the fact remained, he liked her. More than liked her. He wanted her.
Kathy was oblivious to Severus’ reaction, she was too immersed in the tactile, the tangible, a physical contact fixation, the whole new world of actually being allowed to touch and hold someone without being shunned or frowned upon. Yes she could touch Severus, but that had been a gradual awareness, same as she’d had with David, but the gloves that Severus created for her meant a whole new world was opened up to her. Whereas before she’d not fitted into either world, it seemed she was neither muggle nor witch, now she could perhaps blend into both. Within limits of course, but the opportunity was there.
Albus laughed. “As much as I am enjoying the contact my dear, I really need to show my face in the staff room. Otherwise Minerva and Filius will be sending out search parties for me. They already ask too many questions as to my whereabouts most evenings.”
“Severus congratulations, these gloves are a marvellous invention. I wonder, perhaps we could introduce her to the Order, it will be good for Kathy to have the chance to mingle with others and thanks to the gloves, we can safely assure everyone that she is not a threat to them. What do you think?”
Severus frowned at him. “Albus those gloves are merely an experiment, a prototype. I have no idea how long the potion and spells will hold up.” He was keen to see just how well the gloves would continue to work, yet at the same time, he liked having Kathy cloistered down here, away from everyone else. Well, apart from Albus that is. The possibility of her intermingling with other wizards had not entered his head while he was creating the gloves. “Perhaps we should wait a while, until I have experimented more.”
Kathy was puzzled by his reaction, he’d already told her that if Albus was unaffected while she wore them, he would make more. She admitted to herself though that the thought of meeting new people both thrilled her and made her anxious. What if something went wrong? What if they wouldn’t even entertain the idea of her presence when they discovered what she was. As much as she’d grown used over the years to peoples reaction to her, it didn’t mean she liked it. It was demoralising and it hurt. “Maybe we should wait Albus, if Severus isn’t sure how long they’ll work, I don’t want to take the risk.”
Albus gave his Potions Master a calculating look, then nodded. “Very well, there is a meeting next weekend that we both must attend Severus, but I will mention nothing of Kathy’s presence here until you are more confidant about the gloves. I do expect however, that the following meeting will include our guest, it would not do to wait indefinitely if things are to proceed as planned.”
Kathy’s gaze flicked back and forth between them, knowing something was not being said, but not sure enough of herself to demand they tell her what it was.
“She will be ready.” Severus told him, half wishing he’d never started on the project of the damned gloves.
Once Albus had left, Kathy sat on the sofa, pulling Severus down beside her. “So, are you going to tell me what I’m missing here. It’s obvious there’s things you two are keeping secret from me.”
He sighed. “Kathy, as much as I would prefer to enlighten you, I am under oath, I could not possibly tell you no matter how much I want to. Only Albus can do that.”
Kathy reddened, but with anger this time. “So what am I, some kind of tool, a secret weapon to be used against your bloody Dark Lord? And if that’s the case, I have a right to know what the hell it is I’m supposed to do. If you can’t tell me, then he’s gonna have to, and soon.” She yelled, pointing at the door Albus left through. “And why did you lie about the gloves? You told him you didn’t know how long they’d last, yet you told me if they worked you’d make more, that they’d be a success. What are you playing at Severus? You told me to touch him, make sure they worked, but I saw you scowling at me.” She said angrily. “What the hell am I supposed to do, prod him and say ‘Oh goody, they do work’.”
Severus ran a hand down his face then turned to look at her. “No, you weren’t meant to prod him. Kathy I… Damn it all to hell. If you must know I didn’t like you pawing all over him like that. Like he was the best thing since… since… I don’t know, butterfly buns.” He put in lamely.
Kathy stared at him. To say she was shocked would have been an understatement. “You mean you were jealous? No, you can’t have been. Where you?” She asked him, incredulous.
He stood, turning his back on her. ‘DamnDamnDamnDamnDamn.’ “Perhaps, a little bit.” He mumbled under his breath.
“What? I didn’t hear you.”
“Alright, alright. I said yes, I was jealous. Are you happy now?” He raged.
Her mouth opened and closed a few times before she was able to utter a word. “A bit.”
“Pardon?” He asked, unsure he’d heard her correctly.
“I said a bit. Maybe even more than a bit.”
“Oh!” That was not the response he’d expected. In fact he’d been expecting her to laugh in his face, or at best to pity him, telling him how pathetic he was behaving. But he did not expect her to be… what… pleased? He studied her face from under hooded lids. ’Aw what the hell.’ “Kathy, I find myself growing more fond of you the more time we spend together. I did not intend it to happen, but that’s how it is.”
She couldn’t keep the smile from forming on her lips. “I think I feel the same, I’m just a bit unsure.”
“Unsure?”
“I feel… guilty. It’s only a few months since David and the girls, I didn’t even get to give them a decent burial. I think I shouldn’t be feeling like this, like its wrong.”
He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, pulling her to her feet. “Kathy, it is not wrong to feel, don’t ever think that. As for the timing, I cannot account for that, but I know of no rule that says one cannot have a second chance at happiness. Do you?”
“Well no, but it’s not decent is it, this soon I mean. I shouldn’t be feeling this way about you, about anyone. I should still be grieving.”
“Says who? Convention? An unwritten rule that one should spend the rest of ones life lamenting the loss of those we loved, will most likely always love? It does not mean those left behind must put their lives on hold should another chance at happiness cross our paths surely. I understand that you need time to get over what happened, that you may never recover fully from that loss, but do not deny yourself happiness Kathy. Instead grab it with both hands and hold onto it fiercely.”
“Is that what you’re going to do?”
“If you will allow it, yes.”
She reached up and laid a hand on his cheek, then shyly leaned in to brush her lips on his.
