The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 20
After two weeks of tutoring from professor Flitwick, as well as a further weekend with her gran making her practice constantly, Lucy became rather nifty with her wand and Flitwick was extremely pleased with her. He also discovered her ability for mind magic when he walked into the hall earlier than usual and found her listening to music on her ipod.
He was keen to work on this with her, having a mild smattering of the talent himself. His mind magic was weak at best, a throwback to some goblin ancestry many generations back, but he knew quite a lot about it and Lucy couldn’t help but be caught up in his enthusiasm.
It also meant she gleaned another weeks grace before she had to head down to the dungeons for potions classes. A week had never passed so quickly once she discovered what was next on her agenda.
Severus had been away for a little over two weeks. Lucy didn’t know where he went, nor did she ask, assuming he’d gone on holiday or something.
When she crossed the main hall and he walked in through the large double doors she almost fell down from shock. Though staggered in would be a better description of his entrance.
His face was swollen, bruised, and bleeding from a large gash near his left eye. His already pained expression turned black when he realised who witnessed his return. “Haven’t you somewhere you ought to be?” He growled at her, wanting her gone before he tried to resume making his way to the dungeons.
Lucy however had finished her lessons for the day and was about to head to the kitchens for something to eat and a natter with the house elves. She thought they were adorable and loved interacting with them. The sight of Severus so obviously in pain drove all thoughts of food from her head and she instinctively moved to help him.
“Go away.” He ground out through clenched teeth.
“No. You’re hurt, and there’s no one about, I’m not leaving you alone in this state. What happened to you?” She reached his side and slipped an arm round his waist, grabbing his hand and putting it over her shoulder to support him. “Come on, lets get you settled and I’ll go find someone to sort you out.”
Severus tried to push her away. “I don’t need your help. Just leave me be.”
Lucy staggered slightly when he shoved her, but she kept her footing and was about to give him a mouthful for pushing her when she saw his knees buckle. She rushed back to his side and took hold of him again. “Stop being a stubborn sod. Look at you, you can’t even stand up on your own.”
Severus was in too much pain to argue further and leaned heavily on her. He pointed the way to the dungeons entrance and used her as a crutch.
It was slow going, the corridor seemed a mile long and when Lucy saw the stairs she doubted he was going to make it down unless he tumbled his way down there.
“You aren’t gonna make it, not down all those steps. It’s too much. We‘d be better off in the staff room.” She told him worriedly.”
“I’m going to have to, now shut up and go, I can manage on my own.” Severus knew there was no way he’d make it down the steps, but the last thing he wanted was some slip of a girl witnessing his struggle. Especially this girl. If he was going to fall, he preferred to do so without her present.
“I told you, I’m not letting go until you’re… wherever it is you go. What’s down here anyway?”
“The dungeons. Argh Dammit.” He winced, doubling over as agonising tremors wracked his frame. The after effects of the cruciatus.
As Severus crumpled in a heap on the floor, Lucy was dragged down with him, unable to support his weight. God you’re heavy.” She puffed, trying to wriggle out from under him.
There were several biting remarks from both parties before she finally freed herself, stood and tried to figure out what to do with the Potions Master, who was slumped on the stone floor half conscious. “She drew her wand and tried the wingardium leviosa spell on him. It worked up to a point, then when he was several inches from the ground and grumbling at her, she lost her concentration and he slammed back to the stonework.
“You bloody idiot.” He yelled, his face paler than ever with the added pain.
“I’m not an idiot, I’m trying to bloody help you.”
“Kill me more like.” He quipped back, a scowl on his face.
Angry now, Lucy wished he would just float like a blasted balloon so she could pull him down the steps.
Severus’ mouth opened in surprise when he suddenly felt as light as air and began lifting from the floor.
Lucy stared at him wide eyed for a moment, then she grinned widely and grabbed hold of his trouser leg before he floated too high for her to reach. “Idiot am I?” She ignored his feeble struggles and constant rants, pulling him down the staircase carefully. “Right, now where do we go?” The corridor seemed endless, splitting in two directions.
“Turn left, stop at the second tapestry.” Severus was in too much pain to argue any further, he suffered two more seizures on the way down and was close to passing out with the pain. At least she wasn’t letting him collide with the walls.
When they reached the tapestry showing a scene with wizards duelling, Severus whispered something to it, then managed to remove his wand and lower the wards on the door that appeared when the tapestry moved aside. “In here, take me to the sofa and go find the headmaster. If you cannot find him, get Professor Flitwick. And don’t dawdle.” He added impatiently.
Lucy scowled at him but did as he said, lowering him gently to the sofa and letting him go. Her lips twitched when he started to drift upwards again and she had to pull him back down.
“Concentrate on removing this stupid charm.” He groused, clinging to the back of the sofa before he drifted up again.
Lucy did and he felt the weightlessness ebb from his body. He was about to make another scathing remark but again the effects of the cruciatus curse gripped him, making him twitch, his limbs twisting and contorting painfully.
Lucy looked on in horror, tears welling in her eyes when she saw his suffering. She didn’t know what was causing it to happen but she wished it would stop. She wished with all her might that he would stop hurting and twisting like that. It looked terrible.
Severus felt his muscles suddenly relax, the pain leaving him, leaving only the ghost of a memory of how painful it had been. His eyes snapped open and he gawped at her. “What… what did you do?” He asked sharply.
Lucy had turned away in tears, about to leave and find someone. She spun back at the sharp voice, wondering what she’d done wrong now. “Nothing. I didn’t do anything.” She retorted defensively.
Severus slowly pushed himself to a sitting position, expecting the painful spasms to return at any second, only they didn’t. He stood, wincing because he still had a couple cracked ribs and other injuries from the beating he’d taken, but the curse itself seemed to have run it’s course. He noticed her tears. “Go on.” He said more gently. “Find Albus.”
Lucy hesitated a second, then ran from the room. She ran along the corridor aways, realised she was headed in the wrong direction, then turned and ran the other way, up the steps to the main hall.
Severus heard the muffled curse she gave as her steps halted. He smirked a bit when she flew passed the open doorway towards the stairs.
“Professor. Professor.” She shouted, spying tiny Professor Flitwick heading towards the staff room.
When he turned, she ran up to him and told him Professor Snape was badly hurt, she described the spasms and the marks on his face, then went to the staff room, hoping to find the Headmaster while the Professor headed for the dungeons as fast as his little legs would carry him.
Instead she found Professor Macgonagall and told her instead.
Minerva thanked Lucy, threw some powder into the fireplace and told the headmaster what happened, then shot off in the same direction as Filius, leaving Lucy in the staff room with Professor Sinistra and Hagrid.
Lucy liked Hagrid, though he scared the living daylights out of her the first time she saw him. Someone that big should not be allowed was her original impression. But he turned out to be a gentle giant and his love of animals soon endeared him to her. They sat and talked for hours about dragons, Hagrid eager to hear every detail about her visit to the Hungarian dragon sanctuary. Lucy told him everything. Well almost everything.
Now she sat looking glum while she waited for news of the Potions Master. He might be a miserable bugger, but nothing and no one deserved to be in that amount of pain.
“’E’ll be fine lass, don’ you go worryin’ about ‘im.”
Lucy lifted her eyes to the half giant. “You didn’t see him Hagrid. It was awful. His face, it looked like somebody repeatedly put the boot in. And those… things, like fits or something. I could see how painful they were.”
“I seen it all afore, ‘e’ll be right.”
“Hagrid.” Sinistra said sharply.
Lucy gave Sinistra a puzzled look, then Hagrid as he reddened. “Ferget I said anything will yer. I wasn’ supposed to tell yer that.”
“Tell me what, that he’ll be alright, or that you’ve seen it before? Has this happened before Hagrid?”
“Like I said, ferget about it. I aint saying any more.” He clamped his lips together tightly and Lucy pouted. They were keeping something from her that much was obvious. Like any teenager, she hated being out of the loop.
