Severus was waiting for James at his desk. “You’re not doing him any favors you know,” Severus said softly when James entered the dimly lit classroom.
“That’s for me to worry about,” James replied as he hopped up to sit on the edge of the desk.
“That brat is a miniature version of you.”
“Bite your tongue!” James snapped.
Severus looked up at James with an amused expression. “So you don’t want your son to take after you?”
James quietly shook his head. “No. I’m really getting tired of you taking out your feelings for me on him. He’s a good kid. He breaks a few harmless rules on occasion, but he’s still fairly innocent, and I’d like to keep him that way as long as possible.”
Severus’ heart started to pound a little faster as he gingerly reached out to put his hand on James’ thigh. He was actually a little surprised when James didn’t move. “I wasn’t expecting you to actually come.”
“Really now? Why wouldn’t I?”
“What about Lucius?”
James shrugged. “He’s married to Narcissa, and we’ve never talked about being exclusive.”
Severus thought about it a moment and moved his hand a little higher. “I’m sure you only kissed me to take my mind off Harry, but now that you’re here, do you actually intend to go through with it?”
James leaned back a little and sighed. “Do you want to?”
Severus looked away for a second. “This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.”
“Come again?” James raised an eyebrow.
“We’re sitting here discussing having sex like… like… we’re thinking about playing chess or something. This isn’t what relationships are supposed to be like.”
James shrugged. “What can I tell ya Sevy? You and I have a very fucked up and twisted relationship. And if I’m the only relationship you have, well, that’s hardly my fault.”
Severus grumbled quietly to himself. James grinned evilly and slid into Severus’ lap and wrapped his arm around the other man’s neck. “So now that we’ve got the uncomfortable formalities out of the way, let’s get started.
James stood and headed towards Severus’ bedroom, shedding his clothes and letting them fall to the floor. Severus only hesitated for a moment before following.
James, who had been waiting on the bed, got up and helped Severus undress before directing him to sit on the edge of the bed. Severus was already hard from anticipation when James roughly pushed him down on his back. James started nipping teasingly at the other man’s neck and chest, and then suddenly sat up. “I have a better idea,” he announced with an evil grin before getting down on his knees.
James grabbed the pulsing erection in front of him and gave the underside one long lick from the base to the tip. Severus’ whole body shuddered and he let out a loud groan. James slowly let the entire length sink into his throat and held it there for a minute. His tongue found the base and did a swirling motion as his throat muscles expertly massaged the invader.
Severus’ toes curled and he clawed at the bed with his fingernails. He cried out again when James started humming. James slowly pulled out swishing his tongue back and forth against the underside. Then he started swirling his tongue around the head, randomly dipping into the sensitive indent just under the head, making Severus’ leg twitch.
When Severus really started to squirm and twitch James took his free hand and lightly caressed the little patch of skin between his balls and asshole, making Severus gasp and nearly jump off the bed. James kept Severus on the edge for quite some time before swallowing his cock whole again. Severus screamed in intense pleasure and spilled his load down James’ throat.
James pulled back with a contented sigh. “That was… it was….” Severus mumbled.
“Unforgettable?” James finished his sentence.
Severus nodded while he tried to catch his breath.
“Good,” James grinned smugly as he stood and dressed. “Don’t expect any more.”
“Why did you forgive Lucius and not me?” Severus blurted out the question just before James reached the door.
James turned and gave Severus an icy glare. “Not only did you know better, you never even tried to change,” James answered coldly then turned to leave, slamming the door behind him.
Severus stared at the door for a moment and pulled the covers around him. Then something happened that hadn’t happened in a long time. Severus buried his face in the pillow and wept until he fell asleep.

Harry, Hermione, and Ron frantically searched for a way for Harry to survive underwater for an hour, but they weren’t coming up with much. “There has to be something!” Hermione sighed in frustration as she put away yet another book. “They wouldn’t ask you to do a task that’s impossible.”
Harry was starting to wonder as he kicked himself for not figuring out his clue earlier. Cedric had been right, and Harry had screwed himself by not wanting to listen. He wanted to have another brainstorming session with his dad, but James didn’t seem to be around.
Harry saw James a week before the task carrying a large stack of books all with a gold stamp on the spine that said Library of Atlantis. When Harry told Hermione her face lit up and showed a hint of jealousy.
“Harry, that’s the largest library in the world! It’s full of texts that date back to Ancient Egypt! He must be looking for you too.”
“Then I guess he can’t find anything either,” Harry frowned.
The closer it got to February twenty fourth the more panicked Harry became. He started falling behind in his studies, and for once Hermione didn’t scold him for it. McGonagall was being fairly lenient as well, as was Snape. Harry was too preoccupied to notice the change in the Potions Master, but the rest of his classmates did.
The night before the task they still hadn’t found anything. They were searching frantically when Fred and George found them. “Ron, Hermione, McGonagall wants you in her office,” Fred said.
Harry wanted to scream as he watched his two best friends leave. He was searching alone now, and still had no idea where to look. He stayed until the librarian kicked him out.
He arrived back in the common room to find that Ron and Hermione weren’t back yet. Harry waited for hours until he couldn’t take it any more. As soon as the common room was empty he threw on his invisibility cloak and went back to the library. He had to find something by morning.
He ended up falling asleep face down in a book and was awakened by a large and heavy object falling on him. When he regained his senses he found James lying on the floor.
James staggered to his feet, his eyes looking a little bloodshot. He looked around with a confused expression. “Harry, why aren’t you at the lake?”
Harry looked up at the clock and groaned. He was late. “I… I fell asleep and….”
James sighed and pulled something out of a little box he had in his pocket. It looked like a slimy green ball with tentacles. “No time to talk. Put this in your pocket and eat it before you go into the water.”
Before Harry could really process what was happening they were running through the hallways out to the grounds. The other students were just finishing breakfast and heading down themselves. Harry made it down to where everyone was waiting on the lake shore and tried to catch his breath. Out of the corner of his eye he saw his dad go over to Dumbledore and take something from around his neck that looked like a large tear drop shaped crystal and hand it over to the headmaster.
James took his seat by the edge of the water; thankful that this time the merpeople would be taking care of things because he’d been up all night and was exhausted. Who knew it would have been so difficult to find a way for Harry to do the task without raising too many questions.
He watched as the champions headed out into the water then he promptly fell asleep. He was shaken awake about a half hour later and sent out after Fleur Delacouer. She had apparently had a run in with grindylows and was having too much trouble. The merpeople had brought her to the surface so all James had to do was hop in a little boat and row out to get her. As soon as they were back on shore Madame Pomfrey was waiting to wrap Fleur up in a blanket and pour a potion down her throat.
They wouldn’t see any sign of any of the other champions until a few minutes after the hour was up. Cedric Diggory surfaced with Cho Chang in tow. The crowd cheered as they made it to shore and, like Fleur, were both wrapped up in blankets and tended to. Shortly after Cedric was Krum, who had brought back Hermione. Even though Krum hadn’t managed to transform more than his head into a shark, James had to admit he was impressed that the lad had managed to get that far. Changing into an animal wasn’t easy.
A few more minutes passed and there was no sign of Harry. James was starting to become a little worried. He breathed a deep sigh of relief when Harry finally surfaced with Ron and Fluer’s sister Gabrielle. Even though Harry was only supposed to rescue Ron and would probably get points taken off for this, James was just glad Harry had made it through the second task. Unlike everyone else, he didn’t care if Harry won. He just wanted to get to the root of what was going on.
While Dumbledore was having a little chat with the merpeople, Harry pulled James aside. “What was that stuff you gave me?” he asked.
“Gillyweed,” James answered. “It’s very hard to come by, but it seemed like the best solution since you really didn’t have enough time to learn a spell.”
“Well, thanks for coming by it,” Harry said as Bagman called for everyone’s attention.
It seemed that even though Harry had come back last, the judges had seen fit to award him second place for moral fiber since he had tried to save everyone. James found himself both very surprised and proud. Harry was now tied with Cedric for first place, and actually had a shot at winning.
When James wrote to Sirius to tell him the good news, Sirius insisted on coming to Hogsmeade on the next Hogsmeade weekend to personally congratulate Harry. As much as James didn’t like the idea, he knew he couldn’t stop his best friend so he passed the word on to Harry right after breakfast the next morning.
After lunch on that bright Saturday afternoon the kids met James outside and headed down to the little village. They silently headed down a dirt lane away from the houses where Sirius said he would meet them. Sure enough a shaggy black dog was waiting for them.
A huge grin came to Harry’s face when he saw his godfather. He hadn’t seen Sirius since the night he found out he still had a family. The small group followed Sirius out toward the mountain for what seemed like forever. The terrain became rocky and it was hard to keep up.
Finally they came to a fissure in the rock that opened into a small cave. Sirius transformed back into his human body and Harry threw himself into the older wizard’s arms.
“I missed you too,” Sirius smiled.
As soon as Harry let go Sirius pulled James into a hug as well. “I missed you lots too.”
“And I missed you,” James answered. “I still don’t think you should’ve come. You were safe you know where.”
“I had to come,” Sirius said as he looked at Harry. “I need to be nearby in case anything happens.”
James sighed. He pulled a tiny basket out of his robes and enlarged it. “Here’s the food you requested.”
“Thanks,” Sirius said. He took the basket and set it aside.
James and the kids took turns filling Sirius in on everything that had been happening. Sirius was also incredibly pleased to hear how well Harry was doing in the tournament. “I bet you’ll win,” he beamed.
James sighed and tussled Harry’s hair. “It’s a very good possibility. He comes from two very talented parents.”
“That’s an understatement,” Sirius chuckled. “Lily graduated first in our year, and you were a close second.”
“Something weird happened yesterday,” Harry blurted out suddenly, unable to keep it to himself any longer.
Both men turned their attention to him. “What happened Harry?” James asked, a sudden knot in his stomach.
Harry swallowed hard. “Yesterday in Potions I got moved to the front of the class because Rita Skeeter wrote this article about me and Hermione, and well, the Slytherins were giving us a hard time about it. Anyway, after we were separated Karkaroff barged in wanting to talk to Snape. When class was over I purposely spilled something so I could stay behind and clean it up. When I ducked down behind the desk Karkaroff tried to show Snape something on his arm. He looked scared.”
“The Dark Mark…” James sighed. “Lucius told me a long time ago his was starting to come back.”
“You mean they wear the Mark on their arms?” Harry asked in surprise.
James nodded. “Yes Harry. When a wizard became a Death Eater they had to take the Dark Mark. It’s a link to Voldemort. He can use it to summon them.”
“You know what this means don’t you?” Sirius said with a hint of panic in his voice.
James nodded. “He’s coming back.”
“But how?” Harry asked, suddenly scared.
James shrugged. “I honestly have no idea. He’s not back yet, but he has a plan.”
They left Sirius shortly before dinner, arriving back at Hogwarts just in time. James sat down next to Severus and leaned over to whisper into his ear. “You know continuing to let the Slytherins torment Harry is what I meant by not even trying to change.”
Severus didn’t respond, but frowned and kept his gaze on his plate for the entire meal.
