Draco spent the next two days working on the plotline to the sequel. He was only working on the facts. He would add dialogue and detailing later, he just wanted to get the outline ready for Mr. Rickman.
He had an appointment the next day, and he wanted to be prepared. His idea had changed dramatically since his original writings in fourth year. And his handwriting had gotten neater.
He was almost done, and getting more and more excited about the whole meeting when a knock sounded at the door. He opened it and nearly shit his jeans.
His father was standing in the door. “Hello Draco.”
“Father.” He said kept staring.
“May I talk with you?” He asked.
“Of course.” He stepped aside and let his father in. “Would you like some tea?”
“Tea would be nice.” He said. Draco knew he was looking at his surroundings and possibly critiquing his home. He returned as quickly as he could to find his father still standing in the same spot.
“Would you like to sit down?” He offered, handing his father a cup of tea. The two men, now seated fell silent. Neither knew what to say.
“You were working on something there?” Lucius asked.
“A plotline.” Draco said.
“I thought you already had projects finished?” His father asked.
“I did, one of the publishers who I spoke to wants to see a possible continuance of the manuscript I sent.” He avoided his father’s eyes.
“Really?” His father sounded enthusiastic. “A possible two book deal then?”
“Maybe.” He said.
“You know I know Mr. Rickman from Cauldron House.” He began. “I saw…..”
“Why did you do that?” Draco asked, looking up and meeting his father’s eyes.
“Why did I do what?” Lucius asked. “I only mentioned that my son had turned in a manuscript. I didn’t ask for anything.”
“No, but why mention it at all?” Draco pushed.
“I thought it would be a good idea for him to hear about it. He could form his own opinion.” Lucius said. “Have you heard from him?”
“He’s the publisher who wants to see the plot I’m working on.” Draco told him, not sure if he believed his father hadn’t heard.
“I see, so he did like it.” Lucius said.
“Why recommend something if you haven’t even read it yourself. You never read anything I’ve written father.” Draco said, leaning back in his chair.
“No I haven’t, but then again, I never knew you wrote anything.” He said.
“If you did, what would you have done?” Draco asked knowing what the answer would be.
“I don’t know.” The older man admitted.
“You would have stopped it then and there, you know it.” Lucius said nothing to his son’s accusation. “What makes such a difference now?”
“Draco, listen to me, without interrupting will you?” He asked. Draco leaned completely back and relaxed. “Your mother was very angry with me, angry enough to threaten to leave me. I thought I had a wonderful family and then I see that the family I thought I had was different. My wife and son have been total strangers to me.”
“If you are going to start with this, I can’t promise to be silent.” Draco said.
“You are my son Draco, my only child. I wanted to best for you and from you, because I know you are capable of the best.” He said.
“The best according to who?” He asked. “For Merlin’s sake you tried arranging a marriage for me!” Draco jumped up and began pacing.
“That was a mistake, I admit…..” He rose and approached his son.
“You admit it because it backfired. If I had been the meek accommodating son and gave in, I would have been miserable and you would have been none the wiser, assuming that you set my life up perfectly.” Draco said facing him.
“Yes I know, but now I see differently. Draco, I understand how I reacted and I am sorry for …….”
Draco rounded on him and stood face to face. “If you say you are sorry for punching me countless times, save it. I don’t need that apology.”
Lucius fell silent. “I won’t say anything about it, I just hope you will take it as doing what you wish.”
“What I wish?” Draco shouted. “Since when do you care about what I wish?” He started pacing again.
“I never did.” Lucius said sadly. “Maybe that’s when I began losing my wife and son.”
Draco stopped and looked at his father. There was a depression in his face that he never saw before. “What did you say?”
“I said, I never cared about the feelings of my wife and son. I was so accustomed to making the decisions and taking care of my family, that I didn’t realize how little I knew of them.” He sat down and Draco eased into his own armchair. “When you were young, you always came running up to me anxious to be picked up, wanting to go where I went. I could suggest anything and you would be so excited.”
“I was a boy.” Draco said.
“I know. But you were my boy, and I was always right, no matter what.” He rubbed his eyes. “I always made the right decisions and you never questioned them. Along the way that changed. I just never saw it. When your mother threatened to leave I knew I had to think differently.”
Draco didn’t know what to say. “Father, I……”
“I don’t expect you to say anything to this. The only thing I can do is try and tell you that I am trying.” He said.
“Trying to what?” Draco asked.
“Trying to accept this.” He admitted. “I never imagined out of all the things that could shock me, I would be trying to accept a man in your life.”
“I never imagined I’d be in love with one.” He said, secretly smiling to himself as his father made a face. “You will have to get used to that, I’m through hiding.”
“How long have you been hiding?” He asked.
“Several months before graduation.” He said. It felt weird discussing his love life with his father.
“Was he the only one?” Lucius asked in a halting voice.
“Do you really want to know?” Draco asked.
“I’m trying to take an interest in what’s important to you.” He forced out.
“It’s going to hurt you in the process isn’t it?” Draco asked. Lucius sighed and let it out. “Yes, he’s the only one.”
“How do you know he’s the one then?” Lucius asked.
“How did you know mom was the one you wanted to marry?” He asked. He left out the phrase ‘the one’ because according to Draco she wasn’t the only one.
“I just knew.” He said.
“I just know with Ron.” Draco told him. He leaned forward. If his father wanted to take an interest then he may as well start now. “I don’t want to be without him. He kept my secret at Hogwarts, didn’t mention me, even when he came out to his own family, and took me in bloodied and bruised with nothing. He wants me no matter what, and I feel the same.”
“I see.” Lucius said, looking back and forth all over the place.
“Father.” Draco said.
“Yes?” Lucius asked looking at him.
Draco fixed his father with a serious glare. “Don’t ever touch me again.” He said quietly.
“I won’t. I promise son.” He said, keeping his eyes down. He felt the lowest he ever had. He was grateful when a knock on the door came. Draco answered the door and took the package from the delivery wizard. “Something important?” He asked.
“It’s the ass-less leather trousers Ron and I ordered.” He said with a straight face.
“So, I’ll let you get back to work.” Lucius said grabbing his cloak. “I know you were working on the other book.”
Draco smiled to himself as his father rushed toward the door. Draco held open the door, and waited. His father was looking at him. “I love you Draco.” He said quietly. Draco was shocked, having rarely heard the phrase. His throat tickled and he began blinking rapidly.
“I love you too father.” He said.
“I’ve only wanted to give you everything I could.” He said.
“I know.” Draco looked around and shuffled on his feet. Before he knew it he was taken in a hug, the first from his father since his childhood. He blinked some more and reached up to return his father’s hug. It was several minutes before he was released but Draco managed to hold it together.
“Goodbye son.” Lucius told him. “I’ll see you soon?”
“Sure.” Draco nodded and watched his father leave. He abandoned his work for the time being and sat on the loveseat. He lost all control and buried his face in his hands sobbing.
Ron came home not too long after and saw Draco in the same spot clutching a napkin to his red, swollen eyes. “Draco, what’s the matter?” He rushed over and knelt before him, taking his hands.
“My father came by.” He said through the mist.
“What did he say?” Ron said feeling his anger rise.
“He said he loved me.” Draco let more tears fall. Ron’s anger died away.
“That’s a good thing, isn’t it?” Ron asked, sitting beside him.
“Yes, it is,” more tears fell and his words slurred, “juusuuuuus tttttaaaaaaa wannnnnntttttttt hhhhhuuuuuu”
“What?” Ron asked, “I didn’t hear anything after ‘yes it is’.”
“I have always wanted him to just accept me as is and it took this to get it.” Draco said.
“Well, it happened. Don’t worry about the way and the reasons. Just go on from here.” Ron said.
“Yeah, I know.” Draco told him. “He told me he loves me.”
“Like I said, that’s a good thing.” Ron told him.
“Yes, I know but it took……”
“Draco stop thinking of that. Yes, a shitty thing happened, but sometimes it takes that to make people see what they need to.” Ron told him. Draco took in his words.
“You’re right.” He said.
“Good, now do you think he’ll come and visit again?” Ron asked.
“I don’t know,” Draco said, “I think the ass-less leather trousers made him nervous.”
Ron looked over at him. “What ass-less leather trousers?”
