Chapter Twenty – Forward Momentum
The trio were rather surprised when Dobby came in with a fairly large stack of books and an envelope that Harry was quick to open. His voice took on a note of surprise as he shared what was in the envelope with the other members in the room.
“It’s the list of antique book vendors and the letter of introduction I’ll need to get them to sell to me,” he said, eyes wide. “He also wrote to say that if I find that there are other subject matters I need to research during the case, then I’m to let him know and he’ll provide what’s available or find a place where it can be found if he doesn’t possess it.”
“This will be helpful,” L said, shaking his head as he looked at the stack of books. “Although I believe you will be reading for a considerable length of time.”
“If it helps with the investigation, it’ll be worth it,” the wizard bantered back, sorting through the books that had been loaned to him. It was obvious he was amazed by what he was seeing and was getting everything organized by topic.
The detective nodded, staring at the computer as he did so. Matt had continued with the false updates from the teams that were supposed to be all over Japan and the world, and everything looked good so far. He’d also checked on his report from his heir, reporting any outside access to the police database. It was the same ones from the other reports so he was now waiting for the reports from the outside teams investigating the families of the ones who had been accessing the database.
The heirs had been informally introduced to Orion a short while ago as an official member of the Organization and informed of his security clearance, which was high enough to allow him to stay close to L and the heirs. Watari had approved, thinking to himself of how much the wizard had helped so far and would be a great asset to the young man he’d raised.
So far everything was where it should be regarding the investigation, but something was nagging at the detective. He wasn’t quite certain what it was, and it was a sensation he wasn’t used to not being able to figure out rather quickly.
Watari came into the room, frowning as he picked up the television remote.
“You should see this,” he told his charge as he changed the channel to a news station.
Both Harry and L watched the report, frowning as the reporter shared the information about the gunman who had taken a bus hostage. The man had then gone crazy, ranting and firing at nothing before dying when he rushed off of the bus and into traffic. The reporter had said the police were waiting for the medical examiners to run tests to see if the villain had been under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.
“Is it me or does anyone else find this rather strange,” the wizard asked, looking at his companions. “Why would anyone want to go onto a bus and hold everyone hostage? There’s really nothing to gain from doing that.”
“I agree and also find the irrational behavior to be unusual,” L replied, pulling up reports and skimming through them.
Harry had gone back to reading and had been doing so for half an hour before the detective broke the silence that had fallen between them.
“There are no reports of psychiatric disturbances in his file,” the genius informed his companions. “My informant at the medical examiner’s office said that the early results on his tox screen were negative but will let me know if that result changes.”
“Something drove him ‘round the bend, that’s for sure,” the wizard replied, lost in thought. “Especially since he started shooting at something that wasn’t there. I wonder if the magical world here has the ability to check blood for any potions or the like?”
“It might be something to look into,” L stated, chewing idly on the side of his thumb for a moment. “Would you write to ask?”
Harry was already pulling out parchment, ink, and a quill to carry out the request. If the Japanese wizards could do this, it could help determine what was going on. At the very least, it would help rule out any interference with muggles via potions.
As he wrote the letter, the wizard asked another question of his companion.
“If the blood is shown to be clean of mundane or wizard interference, do you think this might be Kira?”
“It is incredibly likely,” the other answered, looking over at the long haired male for a moment. “If so, his abilities are either growing or he is continuing to test his ability to control the actions of others. This means he has not determined what the limitations of his weapon are.”
“This just makes things more troubling,” Harry said, pausing to dip the nib of his quill back into the inkwell. “I find myself hoping for some form of natural explanation for this criminal’s erratic behavior instead of it being Kira.”
“Indeed,” L murmured, frowning a moment as he did so. He pulled up another list and compared the passenger list to it, and his eyes soon fell upon a familiar name.
“This is interesting,” he said, tilting his head for a moment. “Watari, do we have any reports from the team that is investigating the task force?”
“I believe we received the first of them an hour ago,” the older male answered, looking for the files in question. “Which one are you needing?”
“Family name Yagami,” L told him. “It seems his son was on the bus today.”
The man nodded, finding the file and passing it to L. He knew who the name belonged to now that he had looked over the documents inside.
L frowned, reading over it and then shaking his head.
“He’s leading up the police side of the task force,” he murmured. “In fact, his home is one of the ones that has been accessing the police database from outside.”
Harry looked up from his sorting, a bit surprised by the news. He tilted his head, chewing on his lower lip for a moment.
“Do you think it could be him doing the accessing?”
“Family man with two children,” he said. “Given the long hours men of his rank put in, I cannot see him doing much from home but it is possible.”
“I can have Matt see if he can pull a history and verify how often he might have worked from home,” Watari suggested.
“Good idea,” the detective answered, still flipping through the file. “Do we have access to the family’s full file?”
Within moments, another file was handed to L, who began reading with keen interest. Harry went back to his sorting but kept his attention focused on the other. A slight movement from the silent detective drew his attention again, and L spoke before he could ask what it was that had drawn his interest.
“His oldest child is a young man in high school,” he started. “He is at the top of his class and expresses an interest in law enforcement. His IQ is a few points below mine.”
His voice trailed off, but neither of his companions spoke. They stayed quiet, letting him process the facts and put everything together.
“His teachers have reported that he has shown signs of being disenchanted with the justice system despite maintaining his interest in law enforcement,” he said. “It’s only in a few mentions here, and only spoken of twice before focusing on other achievements.”
“How long ago was this mentioned,” Watari asked.
“Six months or more,” he replied. “It’s not brought back up so it’s likely the teachers felt he’d worked through it or found something else to be unhappy about.”
“Teenager, still in school, highly intelligent,” Harry listed off, putting facts together. “He fits the profile. The crazy goings on with the bus could be a cover for him if he has realized he’s being watched.”
“A cover in case someone suspects,” Watari agreed. “Doubtless he knows about the other investigations that have been uploaded to the NPA server so he may have done it to keep himself away from our focus.”
“Agreed,” L said. “I think we should mark him as a potential suspect and investigate him closer. Maybe a search of his house, Watari? Add surveillance as well.”
“I think it’s a bad idea,” the wizard stated before the caretaker could answer.
“Why,” both of them asked at the same time.
“He’s close to L in intelligence and paranoid enough to set off a smoke screen despite knowing that L isn’t sure what country Kira is in,” the green eyed male said. “If it were me, I’d set traps to tell me if someone’s been mucking about with my stuff. If that’s been set off, the next think I’d do is make sure no one is watching me.”
Thinking about it, L had to concede the point but it did limit them in regards to investigating their new suspect. When he mentioned this, Harry just smirked.
“You’ve met Dobby, but I have another house-elf bound to me,” he said. “I didn’t ask him to come because he’s from a darker family and while he respects me, I wasn’t certain about how he would react around mundanes. However, he is sneaky enough for surveillance and can remain hidden so that this guy can’t see him.”
“Do you trust him with this?”
“I do, Watari,” he answered, smirk growing. “Kreacher!”
A soft popping noise was heard, and an elderly house-elf appeared in front of the men. Like Dobby, he was attired in a uniform that had the crests Watari and L had seen Harry wear. The creature bowed towards the young man.
“Lord Harrison has summoned Kreacher?”
“Thank you for coming, Kreacher,” Harry answered. “As I told you, I’m assisting a team with an investigation. Remember what I told you about them?”
“Kreacher remembers, Lord Harrison,” the wizened elf said, nodding. His master had explained what he knew about the home and the work L and Watari did for both worlds whenever asked.
“Right, we have a suspect for this,” Harry said. “The problem is the person in question is incredibly intelligent and would know if someone has been in his home or private room. Setting up surveillance would be impossible.”
“Lord Harry wishes for Kreacher to follow and keep an eye on this person,” Kreacher asked.
“I am,” he answered. “You are the most Slytherin between you and Dobby, and I need someone I know can remain hidden. The problem is that there could be a magical creature involved or a ritual. Your magic may give it away.”
L and Watari were amazed to see the elderly elf straighten with pride at his master’s words, and the elf gave a bit of a dark grin.
“Kreacher will not be found,” he promised. “How often should Kreacher report to Lord Harry?”
“Unless something important happens, wait until I call you,” Harry said. “Use your judgment but be careful, all right? There’s no telling what you’ll be walking into.”
“Kreacher will not fail Lord Harry,” he promised, taking a look at the picture and address when Harry snagged the file from L.
The elf disappeared, and Harry sighed, shaking his head as he did so.
“Merlin, I hope he’ll be cautious.”
“Do you think he won’t be,” Watari asked.
“Since he accepted me as his master, Kreacher will push himself hard to accomplish something I have asked him to do,” the wizard said. “I’m just worried about what he’ll be walking into as well as pushing himself too hard.”
“Hopefully, he will be safe and can bring back useful information,” L said, offering the other a cup of tea to soothe him.
Harry doctored it and as he took a sip, he winced as he realized Hermione would quite possibly murder him if she found out about this!
Author’s End Note – I’m not sure I’m too happy with this, but hopefully it’ll be enough to push the muses back into shape. We’ll see. Please let me know what you think of the chapter. I’ll see you next time! ~ Laran
