A/N I have to confess to suffering from a bout of writer's self pity after my last chapter. From its humble beginnings this story has taken on a life of it's own, I do mean literally. I am just as surprised by what happens in it as the readers are. When I first started I had a very clear plan on where it was going. I had to throw that out ages ago but still things keep on cropping up that I never even expected. One of those was my characterization of Voldemort in the last chapter. I have seen many different versions of this character in various fanfictions over the years, from the evil genius to the loving philanthropist, but despite that I was nervous about my portrayal. I received four reviews concentrating on the way I showed Voldemort, three positive and one negative, but as with all angst ridden authors I concentrated on the negative and went into a fit of self pity. After a fair amount of soul searching and lost sleep (I did say I was overly dramatic, right?) I decided that although my Voldemort is a comical character there is a madness which is just as sinister as anything I have come across. He is unpredictable and dangerous. The way I see it there are two ways of taking the Voldemort character, either he is a man with a goal or he is, in the immortal words of Michael Caine, a man who just 'wants to watch the world burn'. My Voldemort is a combination of the two, he had a goal but now that he is over the anarchy his madness craved is finished and there is nothing left. Although I can see why it would not be liked I am sticking by my interpretation (I say 'my' but really I consciously had very little to do with the process) and if anyone doesn't like it they will be happy to know that if he does appear again in this story it will be as a very small part. However, if I write a sequel to this story he will be featured more heavily. Sorry for the long author's note but it makes me feel better to get all of that off my mind. Well, on with the show!
The last of the logs were piled in the corner of the village whilst the subs collected the stray branches and twigs for kindling. The water buckets were full, covered to protect from any evaporation or dew, the furs had been counted and distributed along with fire wood. The huts were almost ready, only a few more hearths to uncover and hides to tan. Food was still a pressing concern. They didn't have much to spare and with the extra two mouths to feed they might have to rely on small game and rationing to get them to the end of the winter months. There was also a shortage of cloth and rags, so much so that they may have to look into trading with the humans, something none of them wanted to do. Ram watched over the village, happy with the pack. They were pulling together nicely. Unfortunately the challenge would be when all the work was done. Right now they had something to occupy them, something they could all agree needed to be done. Once the work was over the old arguments would surface again and he cold only hope they managed to sort it all out before someone got seriously hurt.
*---*
The large wizard bowed quickly to them before vanishing with a loud 'pop!'. They were not too far from the village so they began walking through the woods slowly and silently towards the pack. Maya crossed his arms across his chest and stared down at his feet.
"Do you think he did it?" Maya whispered, shattering the silence as sure as any scream. It was a question none of them really wanted to think about.
"Even if he did, can you really blame him?" French was looking straight ahead as if he expected to find the answer written on one of the man trees that surrounded them. Fenir shot him a dirty look. "You saw what they did to him. He was only a pup and they did… did that to him. We know what Wolfsbain can do to someone? Not too mention the brainwashing. Lupin could've…"
"No" Fenir interrupted. "Lupin never would've betrayed his pack like that and Harry was his pack. But there is more to this than meets the eye." Fenir turned to Maya."what do you think?" Maya looked back down at his feet.
"I think that we have punished and destroyed a pup who did nothing wrong. As powerful as he is, I have never heard of a wizard who didn't need his wand to kill someone. Even the Dark Lord was using his wand. And why did we not see Harry kill Lupin? All we saw was Lupin bleeding, no knives, no fights, just him bleeding and dying."
"But why would Harry admit to killing him if he didn't do it?"
"Maybe he went mad?" French suggested, "It all became too much for him and he attacked? The Dark Lord said that he had been abused since he was a child, it wouldn't take a lot to break him. It would explain why he admitted to it and why he felt so guilty about it."
"What about the memory? Why didn't it show him killing Lupin?" Maya asked, they had answers now that only led to more questions.
"Maybe he repressed it or something, I don't know, but one thing is for sure If that is what happened no one could blame him. That torture?! How could they do that to one of their own? Their savior?" Fenir looked back over to him.
"Wizard's are barbaric, conniving and controlling. Anything they can't rule over they destroy." French growled under his breath.
"And they call us savage! Disgusting!" Fenir nodded his head gravely. He may have fought with some, he may call one of them Lord, but he would never trust a single one of them.
"I still think there is more to this." Maya said determined. Fenir looked down at the floor. He really didn't know what to think but French was right that amount of abuse, torture, inflicted upon his mate could break even the strongest mind, but Maya was also right, they had continued to beat him whilst he was down. Fenir wanted to kill something but the only person here who had hurt Harry was him.
They walked the rest of the way in silence. As they crossed the scent boundary which marked the start of their little village the sun was already beginning to set and the temperature was slowly dropping. It only took a few moments for Blue to arrive, Pelim in his arms, after catching his mate's scent on the breeze. Maya squealed and ran forwards to greet his family, little Pelim struggling from his father's grip only to be swept up into his mother's arms and swung around. Somehow it felt like they had been away for weeks rather than a day. Blue bought his small family together in a large hug, happy to be back together.
"Makes you want that, doesn't it?" French whispered, whether to himself or to Fenir the Alpha wasn't sure but he nodded anyway. That was what he had always wanted, really, a family like that. After his father was taken it had been all he had ever wanted and for a short time he had had it, not of his loins but of his blood, until he too had been taken. So instead he had become a warrior, a general for his people, a vicious killer. Could he really be a father now? Their pace sped up back towards the village, Maya quietly talking to his son and mate whilst French and Fenir remained silent, each with their own thoughts.
They made good time back to the village, Maya and Pelim locked in their own little world, passing feelings back and forth through the link. Pelim was still of the age where he preferred to communicate with his mother in feelings and emotions. He spoke to the rest of the pack, sometimes not really stopping for breath, but between him and his mother there was always silence. Soon enough, as with all pups, he would need to express himself better and switch to words all the time and the link would slowly begin to dull.
"I know, baby, I know." Maya said out loud, bringing Pelim closer into his arms. Fenir thought back to his own mother and smiled. He had died when Fenir was very young, giving birth to his baby sister. She had lived for a day or so only to follow her mother into death. His link had been slowly breaking down but still when his mother had died the heart-wrenching agony was still fresh in his mind where other memories had dulled with time. The pack had been on the run, causing early labour and a lack of potions when his mother had needed them. His father had sworn revenge and he had carried it out, cutting down every wizard he found, earning the wolf nation their freedom.
Fenir's thoughts were interrupted as they reached the village. The rest of the pack were in the circle, the fire growing quickly to keep out the night cold slowly creeping in as the sun died. The moon was new, at its weakest, but they seemed mostly in high spirits. French went to join his friends in the circle but was stopped by Fenir.
"Don't tell them yet. I just…" Fenir trailed off but French nodded anyway and rushed off. Maya gave Pelim and squishing hug before putting him on the floor.
"Go with your daddy, baby pup, hum?" Pelim grabbed hold of his mother's hand. "Mummy will be back in a second. He just has to go check on someone. Go play with your friends." Pelim nodded his head slowly before letting go of his mother's hand and grabbing hold of his father. Maya hugged his son one last time before the pair walked over to the village center.
"You are going to check on him?" Fenir asked.
"Yes and you aren't." Maya replied. Fenir nodded solemnly.
"I know. He needs me to stay away so I will stay away." Maya chucked a little under his breath.
"When did you grow up?" Fenir returned the laugh.
"About an hour ago, I think." He turned to the healer. "You will tell me…"
"Of course, Fenir. Go and tell the masses what we saw. Perhaps you might be able to heal the pack whist I heal your mate." With that Maya turn on his heal and walked towards the hut where he had left Melim and Harry this morning.
Melim had finally got Harry to come out of his corner, mainly through necessity, the pups needed warmth and clean furs and cloths, not to mention fresh water. The babies had been fed again and were now curled up to sleep on clean furs in their basket. They had the fire banked high, Harry still weak from his blood loss was getting colder than a normal wolf. The were mostly silent, Harry occasionally cooing to his children if they fussed in their sleep, which they seemed to do more than any of the other babies Melim had minded during her time. When Melim had asked Harry about it he said they were checking to make sure he was still there. It was proof, if any was needed, that the separation, even for such a short space of time, had affected the pups as much as it had affected their mother. Melim hadn't asked anything after that and Harry had been content for the two of them to sit in silence. There was a light knock against the wooden doorframe. Harry turned quickly, drawing the basket that had been resting by his side up to his chest, his breath quickened.
"Melim?" Maya's voice whispered through the fabric door, waiting for the okay to enter. Melim gave a small smile and and lay his hand on Harry's arm to calm him. It worked partially, he was still holding tight to the basket, his eyes trained on the door and his body still positioned to flee.
"Come in, Maya." Melim said quietly, she kept her eyes trained on Harry, watching for any signs of increased distress. She heard the swish of the door and the soft footsteps as Maya entered the hut.
"How is everything?" Maya said, his voice low and calming. He moved slowly towards them, trying not to alarm Harry. The twins began to stir, grizzling slightly, their mother's panic flowing down the link openly.
"Everything is fine, isn't it Harry? This is Maya, Harry. He is a healer. He looks after us." Harry's grip on the basket lessened very slightly and the two pups quietened.
"I see the bond is still intact" Maya said as he took a seat next to Maya, sitting across from Harry. He didn't want to crowd him or overwhelm him. "that is a very good thing." Melim smiled.
"I always told you the bond was unusually strong between them. Harry? Why don't you introduce Maya to your pups? He won't hurt them." Harry looked skeptically at Maya and Melim for a moment before turning his eyes to the basket.
"Aurel" he touched the blonde twin lightly, his head turning to one side as he gazed lovingly down at his children. "and Nox" he ran a finger down Nox's soft cheek. Melim gave Maya a covert smile which was returned.
"Those are lovely names, Harry." Maya moved slowly on to his knees and reached over to the small family. "Can I see them?" Harry eyes shot up as Maya advanced, his eyes wide with fear. The two children woke up immediately as Harry pulled the basket quickly into his arms and threw himself backwards. "What's wrong, Harry?" Maya asked continuing to crawl between Melim and the fire. "I'm not going to take them. They are safe. I just wanted…"
"No!" he shouted, squeezing his eyes shut and holding the basket close to his chest. Suddenly the fire flared outwards with a roar. Maya screamed as the flames licked his arm. The two wolves threw themselves backwards, away from the growing fire. The smell of burning hair filled the hut. Just as suddenly the fire sank to it's normal height. The hut was filled with the screaming of the twins, drowning out the faint innocent crackling of the fire and the heavy breathing off all the adult wolves. Maya cradled his arm close to his chest, nursing the red raw burn. Melim moved over to her friend but she was waved aside.
"Don't worry about me go check on Harry." Melim got up quickly and rushed over the small huddle Harry had created, circling the basket with his body to protect it.
"Harry?" Melim said, reaching out her hand and lightly touching his shoulder. Harry's face shot up, his fear shining out from his large green eyes. He looked around the room quickly, his eyes dashing from one side to the room to the other. "It's alright, Harry. Maya is going to stay over there. He isn't going to take Aurel and Nox. They are safe." Harry's breathing began to slow as his alarm began to subside. His eyes rested on Maya, watching him intently incase he moved towards them again. The twins began to quiet as Harry calmed. Slowly his body began to sag forwards, the rush of energy and fear exhausting his already weak body. Melim took the small sub into her arms and kissed the top of his head, rocking him slightly. "Shhh, Harry, I'll watch over you and the babies. I'll keep you safe." Harry's head lolled forwards as he succumbed to exhaustion.
"Is he ok?" Maya asked, his voiced clipped to a whisper.
"I think so. His body is still weak. He had some food and slept for a while but I think he had a nightmare. His power is greater than his body can contain at the moment."
"His power? You mean the fire?" Melim nodded.
"He had been controlling a lot of things since he got here. The weather, the prey, the forest. It all reacts to his emotions. I noticed it whilst he was pregnant." Maya thought for a moment.
"The storm. When he was giving birth there was a storm and the mild autumn." Melim nodded. "How can that be? I have never heard of a wizard with that kind of power before, and without a wand? Do you think… Do you think he could kill someone with it?" Melim thought for a moment.
"I don't know."
"There is more going on with him than you know. We found out a lot from the wizards."
"Better tell me about it after you have taken care of that arm." Maya looked down at his arm and hissed.
"Come and get me if anything changes." He got up slowly and carefully, still cradling his arm close to his body. Melim nodded and went back to rocking the small family slowly to sleep.
The rest of the pack gathered in the village centre. The darkness was creeping in slowly and the large fire in the middle of the circle burned brightly with a couple of hares roasting slowly by its side, minded by Saf. The pack was mostly quiet, the crackle of the fire only interrupted by the occasional scuffle of children playing, which was quickly halted by swift glares and anxious mothers. There was a tension which hung on the air as Fenir entered, Blue at his side, and took his seat next to Ram and Claw. Even the ambient noise seemed to stop abruptly as he was watched intently. Fenir took a deep breath and turned to Claw.
"May I address the pack?" he asked, his tone hushed, trying to not draw attention to his question. It felt strange to ask permission to do something he had never even thought twice about, but it was the proper way. Claw nodded silently, conscious of the discomfort such a question had to have caused the Alpha. He placed a hand lightly on Fenir's shoulder and was given a light smile in return. He stood slowly and watched the eyes follow him upwards.
"We have news from the wizards. There are…" he struggled for the word "things we weren't told about Harry, things which change everything." He took a deep breath and looked around the pack, mostly their faces were unchanged, waiting for him to continue. French's face was hanging low, his thumbs slowly rubbing his temples. "There is doubt over whether he killed Lupin." Several wolves gasped in shock, holding their hands to their mouths, murmuring began, low at first but gathering in volume. Fenir watched the pack again. Only two remained silent. Namile was staring at him, there was no shock on her face, nor confusion, just anger shining from her eyes, stronger than the fire and just as bright. Elouise was the other, her head hung low, the only thing he could feel from her was shame. The noise began to grow. "Please, there is more." the pack quietened slowly. "The Wizards… they… abused him. Badly. He had scars all over him. Not just the wizards but his family, the Muggles who raised him. They beat him" Fenir took a deep breath, the emotions welling up inside his gut. He didn't know if he wanted to cry, scream or punch something "and raped him." A muffled cry was heard, subs bowed their heads, teeth were gritted and eyes squeezed shut.
"How do you know? Because some wizard told you?" Namile stood up, the bitterness dripping from her tongue and her eyes alive with hatred.
"We watched it happen." French didn't look up as he spoke but they could see his face contorting in rage. "We saw them do… unspeakable things to him. And they laughed while they did it." French spat on the floor.
"Nothing more than he deserved the murdering little whore…" Before Fenir could attack French leapt up snarling, his hands outstretched, his fingers curled into claws. Nero and Charl held their friend back as he snapped at. Ram had grabbed Fenir's arm when Namile had begun to rant but he was too shocked by French to react himself. He was the calmest dom he had met in a long time, not prone to the same bouts of rage and territorial fighting that they others
"You know nothing you stupid bitch! Nothing! How dare you!" Namile looked desperately at her mate and began to back away until she tripped on something backwards, falling backwards the outer ring.
"Ram! Help me!" Ram bowed his head slightly and then looked away.
"I told you, not this time." The anger that had flared from Namile's eyes was replaced by fear.
"Enough!" Fenir roared, startling French out of his rage and causing the three of them to fall backwards. "We are getting nowhere. Namile, I don't give a shit what you think of me or my mate but call him that agin and I will rip out your throat myself."
"And if you don't I will." French had pulled himself up off the ground and had locked Namile into his sights. Suddenly he turned and stalked away. Fenir watched him silently, trying to re-evaluate the musical dom. He had come to the pack a couple of years ago with very little background. At the time they were just happy to have another dom, another fighter, but now Fenir wondered if perhaps there was more to him then met the eye.
"I told you all that I would take him as my mate with or without your acceptance and I will," Fenir stared at Namile "no matter what he has been through. I hope that you can see past your prejudice and make up your own minds." Fenir took a deep breath. "I will leave you all to your dinner. I am not in the mood to eat." Fenir turned quickly, ignoring Ram and Claw who tried to get him to sit with them for dinner.
"Some speech." Maya came out of the shadows. "I didn't want to interrupt. With the way me and Namile are at the moment I doubt either of us would've come out unscarred." Fenir gave a little chuckle under his breath.
"I don't know they held back French alright, I don't think there would've been much trouble."
"Ahh, but I have cunning. You'd be surprised how easy it is to wrap any dom around your little finger, especially when you look all small and harmless." Fenir smiled.
"You're probably right. I have always under estimated subs and now I am paying for it." Maya nodded solemnly. Fenir looked at Maya, there was something odd about the way he was holding himself, his arm held close to his body, wrapped in white linen. "What happened?" He gestured with his head towards the arm. Maya held it up slightly and looked at it.
"I made a bad judgment call." Fenir gave Maya a look pushing for more information. "I forgot that I am probably just as popular as you with some people at the moment." Fenir's head went to one shoulder.
"Namile?" Maya laughed.
"No, not yet at any rate. No this was your sweet little sub. I reached out to check on the twins and got my arm burned for the trouble. My own fault, I should've thought that maybe he wouldn't trust me."
"He seems to trust Melim, from what you said."
"Melim was with him through most of his pregnancy and had nothing to do with taking the babies off him. I was at the wrong end at that point to not be tarred by the same brush." Fenir hummed noncommittally.
"How did he do it? A bite or a scratch?"
"Nope, that is the good part. It's a burn. He was controlling the fire. He got scared and WHOOMF up it went. I think he got some of Melim's hair as well."
"What do you mean controlling the fire? I thought you said he couldn't do magic without a wand? Does he have a wand?"
"No, I don't think it is wizard magic. They don't pay attention to nature, or anything else for that matter. I don't even think he knew he was doing it. According to Melim she noticed it a while a go. When he was happy the weather was nice and things like the storm the day he gave birth and the cold."
"Could he kill Lupin like that? Like you said this isn't wizard magic, maybe he didn't meant to and it just happened?" Maya thought for a second.
"Maybe but Lupin didn't look burned or anything, just bleeding. I think the only person who knows what happened to Lupin is Harry, and to be perfectly honest I think even he is pretty fuzzy on the whole thing. Even if he did know he is in no fit state to tell anyone at the moment." Fenir moved closer.
"What do you mean? Is he hurt? Is he worse?"
"Calm down, Fenir. The burst of magic exhausted him. Melim has stayed with him. You might be ok going to see him if he is still unconscious. But if he starts to wake you have to leave immediately. He isn't strong enough at the moment to deal with you." Fenir nodded.
"Thank you, you have been a good friend, even when I didn't deserve it."
"Someone has to take of the idiotic doms in this pack, don't they." Maya started walked towards the village centre. "If anyone asks I will say Harry scratched me. They don't need to know until we know what is going on."
"Thank you again." Maya inclined his head slightly and carried on his walk. Fenir moved away to visit his mate in his hut.
"Oh and Fenir" Fenir stopped dead. "thought you might like to know. Your pups are named Aurel and Nox." Maya carried on walking.
Fenir smiled and mumered to himself "Welcome to the pack my pups, Aurel and Nox. Good names."
