A/N: A reviewer commented that my chapters were getting shorter (I honestly hadn't noticed them changing length really at all) so I made a concerted effort of making this one nice and long for you. Also, for those of you anxious for the father to be revealed, I'm afraid you have to wait a touch longer. We are getting close though.
“I’ve found it, Harry!” Hermione said excitedly precisely three seconds after she stepped through the emerald green fires in Harry’s fireplace.
Harry blinked some in confusion and shifted James from one side to the other in his arms. “You’ve found what?” he asked even as Hermione threw open a large book on the coffee table. James squirmed and whined in his arms and Harry sighed. “Hold on a minute, Hermione,” he said as he continued to the kitchen where he’d been headed in the first place. It was lunch time and Harry had been going to feed James when Hermione had burst in. Though he was glad that Hermione was apparently excited about something and he was insanely curious about what she was excited about, he did have to make sure his son was fed first. He quickly prepared the bottle for James, managing to do so one handed as he usually did. Once James was happily suckling his bottle in Harry’s arms, the savior turned single parent made his way back to where Hermione was waiting. “Alright, Hermione, what is it you found?” he asked as he sat down near his friend on the couch.“A way to improve your wards around the house,” Hermione said, eyes sparkling in that way that said she was excited and proud of the amount of time she’d spent pouring over books. Or, at least, that was what Harry always attributed that fierce look in her eyes to whenever she found some obscure information they needed.“And how do we do that?” Harry asked, peering at the huge tome on his coffee table. It was clearly old, the binding was thick leather and the pages were yellowed around the edges and even torn in some spots. It had to be at least a thousand pages thick and was the size of most encyclopedias rather than the normal spell book size. The writing on the pages looked hand done rather than made by enchanted quills, which meant that the book was really old, even by wizard standards.Hermione flipped the page a few times and pointed to one page. It had a hand colored illustration of some shimmering wall that was cutting straight through a man. Harry cringed a little at the graphic depiction of innards spilling out, limbs sheared off, and the horror and pain on the man’s face. Why did all these old books have to have the worst drawings in them? Wizards truly were a morbid bunch. “This spell should make it so that you can keep entire species out if you set it right. You can keep that Incubus out no matter if you know who he is or not if you just set the ward to keep all incubi out,” she said.Harry frowned a little. “You’re sure?” he asked.“Of course!” Hermione said. “Oh, sure, it takes a little while to set up. And it’s not exactly an easy spell but there’ve been lots of documented uses of this for various different creatures. There was one wizard that was terrified of vampires and set this spell around his house. Then there was a witch that…”Harry was distracted from Hermione’s list of examples when he felt a small hand grab his shirt. He glanced down at James, receiving a huge grin from around his bottle. “Hermione,” Harry said softly. Hermione didn’t seem to hear him as she continued to list yet another example of the spell in action. “Hermione…” Harry tried again as he brushed James’ black hair back and turned to his friend.“Hermione!”Hermione jumped a bit and turned. “What?” she asked in exasperation. “I’m sure it will work, Harry!”“It’s not that,” Harry said before shifting James in his arms. “What about James? He’s an incubus too you know,” he pointed out softly.Hermione blinked some before looking down at the baby who was looking between them as he gnawed on the rubber nipple of his bottle. “Oh… oh, Harry, I’m sorry! I completely forgot somehow,” Hermione murmured. “I just thought that this was perfect.”She sighed heavily and closed the thick tome. Harry frowned at the bit of dust that escaped from between its pages. Now that it was closed Harry could see the deep engraving on the front spelling out the book’s name. ‘Lexicon of Wards and Spells; Volume 98’. “I guess it’s back to the drawing board…” she muttered. “Maybe I could rig something that required everyone to get permission to come in first…” she mused aloud.“Thanks anyway, Hermione,” Harry said. “I appreciate that you’re looking for me. I really don’t have time to do it.” Especially if she’d actually gone through ninety seven of those books to get to this one first. It was a dizzying amount of reading she must have done.“Oh, Harry, it’s not a problem at all. I just wished I could have had an actual answer for you,” she said with a sigh. “I’ll still look though, Harry. I’m not giving up yet. There’s plenty of other spells I haven’t looked at yet. Ron says I haven’t had to go through this many books since we were looking for a way to save Buckbeak. But I’ll find something. I’m sure I will.”Harry smiled some. “I’m sure you will too, ‘mione. You’ve never failed us yet,” he told her.She blushed some at that. “Well, I wouldn’t be much of a friend if I didn’t help you when you needed it now would I?” Harry smiled and shook his head some. “Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask… Are you planning on going back to work at all?” Hermione asked curiously.Harry sighed and ran his free hand through his unruly hair. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “I mean… I really didn’t think I’d be the one raising James. But I don’t know if I can trust anyone to be alone with him either.” He didn’t want to go into the why of that. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust the other people. He wasn’t entirely certain if he trusted James. He wasn’t at all certain what a baby incubus was capable of and he wasn’t willing to find out the hard way.“Why did you keep James?” Hermione asked softly. Her eyes fell to the baby that was now done his bottle entirely and staring at them with rapt attention. More than she’d think a three month old would have anyway. With another sigh, Harry took the empty bottle and put it to the side before shifting James to his shoulder automatically. “James’ father told me if I gave James up… he’d bring him back and give me a reason to stay laid up for a while longer…” Harry said as he gently patted the baby’s back.Hermione’s eyes widened. “He what? Oh Harry, how horrible. Now he’s blackmailing you too? We’ll find a way to keep him away from you. I promise.”Harry nodded a bit. “I’m sure we will, Hermione. But I’ll be alright. I still have about a month before I have to decide what I’ll do. I do want to go back to work but I don’t really have to and I don’t want to have to hire some stranger to look after James. What if they find out what he is somehow?”Frizzy hair bounced a bit as Hermione nodded in understanding. “Well, you could ask Molly to look after him during the days,” she suggested. “She’s already helping Bill and Fleur and Ginny and Dean look after their kids sometimes.”Harry frowned some. “Mm, maybe. Or I guess I could ask Lupin and Tonks. At least Lupin already knows about James.”“Molly does too,” Hermione pointed out as Harry shifted James to his lap. “And you know she’d never tell anyone about something like that. She doesn’t want to see you hurt.”“I know,” Harry said instantly. “It’s not Molly I’m worried about though. It’s Ginny,” he admitted.“Ginny?” Hermione echoed. “Oh, don’t let her bother you, Harry. She’s just sore about the divorce still. I don’t think she’d ever actually do anything to hurt you. Once the news about James got out she was a bit hurt, I think. She’s got it in her head that it was her you didn’t want to have kids with or something.”Harry narrowed his eyes some. “Of course not. That’s ridiculous!”“I know that! And everyone else knows that too! We told everyone who didn’t know that it was an accident with a girl who doesn’t want to be famous for her boyfriend. Everyone pretty much accepts that,” Hermione said quickly. “But you know how Ginny can get.”Harry sighed heavily. “Yeah, believe me, ‘mione… I know how she can get. But it’s not like I’m going to tell her where James really came from. The fewer people know about that the better off it’ll be.” James giggled in Harry’s lap and Harry couldn’t quite help the small smile that crossed his face. “For both our sakes it’d be better if nobody knew where he came from.”There were several long minutes of silence between them as they watched James squirm in Harry’s lap. He would have fallen off several times if not for the steadying hand of his father wrapped around him. “You’re not going to let Ginny keep you from the Christmas party are you?” Hermione asked softly.Harry frowned as he continued to watch his son. “I don’t know, Hermione. I don’t want to go if it’ll just be me and Gin fighting the whole time,” he admitted.“Molly will be furious if you don’t go, Harry,” Hermione said sternly. “Plus… it would be good to get out of the house once and a while. For the both of you.”“Every time I go out lately there’s nothing but cameras. It’s even worse when I tried to go anywhere with James,” Harry said sourly. “I understand why Dumbledore wanted to keep me away from all that. It’s ridiculous. I can’t even go to the store like a normal person.”Hermione’s eyebrow went up some. “All the more reason to come to the party. I’ll be sure any idiot reporters can’t get anywhere near the Burrow. Don’t you worry about that, Harry. You just come and enjoy yourself or Molly might floo here and drag you back herself.” Harry nodded in agreement; he wasn’t entirely certain if Hermione was joking or not, but not willing to find out. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
