Summary: Lily's dead, Severus is in mourning. He contemplates what to do with the rest of his life when fate takes a hand.

Chapter 19

The orphanage was shaping up now.
Between the pack and the squibs who applied to look after the children they had decent caregivers now, all of whom had taken oaths to care for the children like they were their own. Since it was near impossible for squibs and werewolves to have jobs in the Wizarding world due idiotic prejudices it was dueing them both good.
Aurora’s involvement had capitalated her to the Head of the Department of Magical Children especially since her predecessor Rosier had been revealed as a Death Eater.
Ted had taken a leave of absence from St. Mungos as had Annie and another Mind Healer Myrtle Sprout to help nurse the children into better mental, emotional and physical health.
Harry was sleeping better and Cora refused to be separated from him since he’d arrived.
It was nearly solstice and thus three days to Lucius’ birthday.
Harry was called for play dates with Draco, Daphne, Luna and Neville Longbottom, the later who was Andromeda’s godson that she shared with Senior Auror Scrimgour.
Sirius’ trial had been forced to occur by public protest thanks to Malfoy and Prince money of course.
Sirius had been examined for the Dark Mark and had willing submitted to questioning under Veritaserum.
Which proved that Sirius was not the Potters’ Secret Keeper and he did not bear the Dark Mark.
Sirius was put on paid leave after his release due to the erroneous nature of his illegal arrest and Cornelius Fudge was under investigation.
Bartimus Crouch Sr. was still Head of Magical Law Enforcement and was running the Death Eater trials.
Yet to Sirius’ fury, Aurora Greengrass absolutely refused to transfer custody of Harry to Sirius citing that the change would be detrimental to the boy’s fragile mental health.
It helped that Lily’s recently probated will granted physical custody to Remus and Severus so it strengthened their claim. She was the surviving spouse if only by mere moments so her wishes were followed.
Albus was publicly embarrassed due to his supporting Sirius’ imprisonment without trial, his role as a mastermind and accomplice in a kidnapping and his attempt to have the Potter wills sealed.
Due to the backlash, rising star journalist Rita Skeeter publicly flogged him in The Daily Prophet and he was forced to resign as the Wizengamot’s Chief Warlock. Immediately following, the Governors suspended him from Hogwarts appointing senior professor Filius Sprout as Headmaster.
Severus and Sirius in a rare moment of agreement sued Albus personally in Harry’s behalf, leaving the man almost as penniless as when the former Dumbledore Patriarch was arrested for the assault and murder of Muggle boys. Sirius had a small suit that was due to Albus’ involvement in pushing for his trial and being the originator of the slander against him as well.
The old man was still facing the possibility of charges from the Ministry but he was practically penniless, many of his possessions were seized by the Ministry to sell in order to pay his fines so he was living in a rather bare room over The Hog’s Head tavern that was owned by his younger brother.
Due to Kingsley and Amelia’s warnings, the entire Auror and Hit Wizard corps were on high alert, they had emergency portkeys reassignments so one member of a partnership knew how to make a taking patronus.
So when the Longbottoms were attacked while Solstice shopping in Diagon Alley, both sent Patroni to get help. They were defected Order members, but Frank was partnered to Rufus Scrimgour and Alys to Daveth Proudfoot.
The Aurors turned out in full force.
Capturing Rodolphus, Rabastan and Bellatrix Lestrange as well as young Bartimus Jr. Crouch…
No intelligible reasons for the attack were given…
By the time the Calvary came, Frank was staggering while Alys lay unconscious behind a shield.
The Longbottoms were both officially on medical leave from the corps but neither the Aurors nor St. Mungos would comment on their conditions.
Lucius and Severus felt a lot safer with Bella locked up and headed for Azkaban.
Harry was officially in their care; Lily’s will had made it so…
Even Sirius had backed down after that, of course because Sirius was one of Harry’s godfathers and Remus’ friend he was definitely going to be involved in Harry’s life.
Remus promised he could stay Uncle Siri, to avoid confusion Harry was going to be raised knowing that James was his father and Lily as his mum. But with Coraline as Remus’ daughter, it would be easier if Harry was raised by loving parents and treated equally as his sisters.
They were going to be a family…
Safe behind Merrivale’s wards, they were safe…
With Severus’ Potions Master, First Class certification he could brew in his free time when he wasn’t needed as a parent. Granted pregnancy was going to make it impossible to brew once he was over four months but that was okay, he still had the Prince Fortune and the farm at Merrivale so they could purchase anything they didn’t produce themselves.
While they had lost James and Lily, they had gained a larger circle of family and friends who had stood beside them after the loss of their beloved friends and the kidnapping/disappearance of Harry.
Kingsley proved thanks to Lucius’ assistance that the orphanage Vernon Dursley dumped Harry off at, had a contact with the black market sex trade. They transferred orphans to the orphanage in Jersey where they found Harry to be trained as sex slaves and prostitutes. All of the orphanages had a habit of transferring orphans that had no family for just about any reason they felt like because there was no oversight. The corruption ran deep and it would be difficult for even the current Prime Minister to weed out if they wanted.
Jersey was under the authority of the British Crown but was part of a small group of semi-independent islands that weren’t often noticed on a map. Due to the political nature of its authorities, with the right bribe Ian McCallum was right, you could get away with just about anything in Jersey.
Things were settling down and the Prince-Lupin family was starting to fall into a routine…

ChaosLady- if you liked two back-to-back chapters how about five? Yes Harry is home and it only took seventeen chapters...
Anon - Do I have enough plot for a sequel? Well there is still Harry's Hogwarts years right? Plus there is the how does being raised by snupin, witnessing his mother's murder and his abuse in the orphange affect him issue. We'll see!
