Chapter 20
Beta'd by the amazing Tenchi, who I couldn't work without anymore. Thanks, Tenchi!
Just a reminder of what's on my profile; reviews complaining or whinging about the lack 'o sex in stories will get deleted. If you want a smut-filled romp, you need to find another story to read.
Sitting across the kitchen table from Black, Lupin and Potter, Severus was still trying to formulate how to work with what he wanted to do and say what was needed. It was going to be a delicate dance where he couldn't give up some details, but others he had to in order to work with the situation he had talked with the Dark Lord about. Sighing, he looked between them and wondered how to start. Thinking of a place, he launched in, “I just want to say that this isn't something I've mentioned to the other three in the house yet. Before I say anything to them, I want to work with the three of you and lay out what I can. I'm going to give up some details not all parties in this mess know.”
“What's this about to start with,” Sirius asked, holding Harry to him while he sipped at his coffee.“The bond and what's going on. I have a proposal I want to make on it. I have a feeling, though I don't know for sure, that it's something you're planning anyway,” Severus said, looking between them.“And that is?” Sirius asked, cryptically. Right now, he was willing to listen, especially since Harry could tell if the man was pulling a fast one with something.Looking down at the scarred table, hands clasped, Severus said softly, “All of you getting out of this mess. I have a feeling you're trying to do that. I think that goes without saying, actually. The bond alone is going to force it. Though I'm certain that you didn't reveal everything Lily told you, I'm sure there is something there that is a driving force in this as well.”Glancing to Sirius, who was shooting him a look, Remus said, softly, “It's doubtful that Harry and Sirius can separate at this point. By the end of summer, Lucius probably won't be able to either. The bond isn't going to let it. That means there is no way Harry can go back to school unless the two of them go with him. In order for that to happen, we're going to have to give up the reason for it. That's not going to happen.”“I agree,” Severus nodded, looking between the three. “I'm also not sure here what Albus thinks is going on. I know parts, but I don't have the whole picture of what he might be planning. The parts I do have, I can't put together to figure out. I can with a few parts, but not all of it. What I do know tells me he doesn't realize that prophecy is invalid. I know for a fact he doesn't know about the other one.” Looking at Potter, he said, softly, “The mistake about the scar and the Parselmouth is something that tells me he's on the wrong track when it comes to what he's thinking. If he's incorrect on something like that, he's bound to be on other things as well.”As all that aligned with what Lily had told him, Sirius nodded and added, softly, “He is. I was told he was wrong and he read it wrong. Nothing more than that, mind you, but that was clear.”“I thought as much,” Severus said with a nod. “I know Albus thinks that the Dark Lord is blocking the connection. I believe he told you that as well,” he imparted looking between Black and Potter. Seeing them nod, he pressed on, “He's not. He can't. Whatever that connection is, he can't block it. Which rules out part of what Albus thinks is going on. It also tells me that whatever I tried to teach last year wasn't going to work. As this has to do with another prophecy, one Albus doesn’t know about, conventional means aren't going to work. In fact, I'm not sure I could come up with anything that may possibly work. The key here, I think, is going to be sealing the bond and whatever triggers the seer aspect of that prophecy. Nothing else is going to help, I don't think. I've looked into a couple other ways to shield, but they are based on the same theory with just another way to go about it. That won't be helpful. And, bluntly, if someone as old and powerful as the Dark Lord can't manage to block the connection, Mr. Potter has no chance at it. What he knows has taken years to master. Nothing I could teach in a short time would do so.”Taking that in, Remus glanced at Sirius, who was nodding.Looking at the man in Black, Sirius asked, “What are you proposing then?”“Let me see what I can do to find somewhere safe to stash you. It's going to take time for me to manage it, but I think I might be able to. It's to protect you. Lucius would have to go with you, of course. We can work with the rest in this as well.” Looking at Harry, he said, “Mr. Potter can easily confirm for you that this is a legitimate offer, as he knows why I'm helping to protect him. He's come across with that to all of you already.”Looking at Snape then glancing at his godson, Sirius asked, “Harry?”Gazing at the man seated across from him, Harry said, slowly, “He's telling the truth. And I know why he's doing what he is. I'm going to be honest here in that, like Lucius and Narcissa, he's not telling the whole thing and there is plenty missing, though I don't know what, but it's not something that's going to put us in danger.”Taking that for what it was, Sirius nodded, patting Harry on the back. Quietly, he asked, “What do you have in mind for this?”Liking what Potter said, and how it would help him, though curious about parts of it, Severus said, “That is the part I'm not sure about. It's going to be tricky, that's for damned sure. I was hoping, maybe, the three of you had something that might give me a base to work from. If you don't, we can bring Lucius in. He may have a suggestion we haven’t thought of yet.”“We're going to be no help there. What little in the way of something that might work was just starting to form when Lucius and Narcissa dropped into the mess. Since then, it's been on hold. Part of it we have to wait for as it has to do with Harry's birthday. The rest comes from me looking into what I can find.” Sirius told him, looking at the man.“What were you pondering? If it's viable, I might be able to do something you can't,” Severus asked, glancing between the three of them.“One was protected areas. We don't think any are close. The only ones I know of are in Russia. The other parts had to do with properties Harry and Sirius owns. That means going through papers Sirius has and what Harry will get. I don't think we can get our hands on Harry's before he turns sixteen to look,” Remus explained. “We had nothing else. Even those—we weren't sure they would work.”Shaking his head as he thought it over, Severus said, “The protected areas probably won't. If either of you two have a house similar to this one, with the same kinds of protections, we could manage it. Even if was in Britain. We could create some kind of diversion that sends one of the sides off on a wild chase to think something happened to you. That part will come once we find someplace.” Rubbing a finger over his chin, he said, “Let me get with Lucius to see what he might have somewhere. Or if he knows of something we might be able to get our hands on. I'll then go from there. I'm sure, if it comes to it and something that requires purchase is involved, I can find a way to manage it. I'll see about looking around myself on some things. I don't know. Let me see what I can come up with.”Looking at the man, while Sirius and Remus nodded, Harry was curious. Thinking it over, he asked, quietly, “What does Dumbledore have in mind for me anyway? What's he planning? Well, that you know of.”Stiffening up, Severus looked at the young man, not sure what to say. He had hoped that the question would go unasked, but it wasn't unanticipated either. Quietly, he said, “It won't happen. No one will let it, Mr. Potter.”Eyes narrowing, Harry asked, “What is it? Mum didn't tell Sirius.”Looking at Snape, seeing him glance around, Sirius then glanced at Remus before asking, “Yeah, what is he planning anyway? That we don't know. I just know he's reading it wrong.”Looking between the three, Severus said, softly, “I need you to stay calm when I tell you this. It will not happen, I swear on my magic.”“Tell me,” Sirius snarled, eyes starting to flash, knowing this had to be bad.Stiff, hoping Lucius was starting to pick up on the fact that something was off and would join them, Severus calmly began to explain the Horcrux theory and what Albus planned for Harry to do. When he finished, he shook his head and soothed, the best he could anyway, “It will not happen. None of you will let it and I'll ensure it doesn't. Let him continue to think what he wants on the topic and go about his merry way there. We know what he's planning and won't let it come to pass.”Teeth gritted Harry shut his eyes and began to breathe deeply as he heard Remus and Sirius, both, start to shout at that. Feeling his temples throb madly and hearing the blood rushing in his ears, he shook his head as his whole body began to tingle. Then, suddenly, his magic seemed to cut loose and pool out around him like ripples in a pond, shattering every chunk of glass there was. Shaking his head, he said, tone strangled, “I need to go outside.” Standing, not even hearing what was said to him, Harry fled the kitchen for the backyard and some solitude to think.
Hearing the door to the backyard open, Harry didn't look up. He already knew who it was, so he didn't bother. Hearing Lucius take a seat beside him, he just shook his head, not sure what to say.
Putting a hand on Harry's knee, Lucius gave it a squeeze then said, gently, “It won't come to pass. None of us will let it.”“I trusted him and thought he was doing what was for the best,” Harry said quietly.“And that's probably the worst part of this.” Lucius admitted quietly. “It's not right, no matter how you look at it. You have my word, Harry, we won't let it happen. Sirius and I, both, won't. Severus is doing what he can to protect you. That's all you're going to need. We won't let him even start to dance down this road. We'll find a way to get out and keep you out. I don't care what it takes. That I give you my solemn vow on.”Shaking his head, Harry sighed, “It makes me wonder how long he's been planning this and if so much of the 'he cares about me' crap was just that.”“I don't know,” Lucius told him honestly with a shake of his head. “I think he does care about you, in his own way, but feels this has to come for whatever reason. That doesn't make it right, of course, nothing makes it right, but he feels that it has to happen. We know better and know what he's planning so we can stop it. That's all that matters now. Sirius and I won't let anything happen to you. There is nothing he can try now to separate us either. That ends whatever scheming he thinks he can get away with. Keep that in mind.”“Lucius is right,” Sirius said quietly as he stepped out. Walking over and taking a seat by his godson, he slipped an arm around Harry and kissed him on the side of the head. “It won't work, none of it. I don't give a shite what he pulls, we won't let it happen. We know and can prepare. That's all we worry about from here on out. Albus might be good and strong. He might be smart. There is also the amount of magic he knows. I can damned well guarantee you that none of that will help him if he thinks to pull this dumb arse stunt with you. Lucius and I will be more than a match for him. You're no slouch there either, Harry. I think you're stronger than you realize. We also have a heads up of what he wants to do. That's a huge help. Snape just promised all of us that he'll make sure we know when he gets information on what Albus might be trying to pull. It won't happen.”Leaning against Sirius, eyes shut, Harry just shrugged. He didn't know what to say here, he really didn't.“You're safe. I damn well guarantee that. And if any of us have a say in it, you're not even going to be around him anymore. We'll get out, though I don't know how, and stay away. He'll learn the hard way that whatever he's planning won't work because you won't be around to make it work,” Sirius told him softly.“How about this—tomorrow night we do the partial activation of the bond. We were planning for tonight, but I don't think that's wise with the current mood. Once that even partially activates, it'll give you more protection. We then go from there on what we can do,” Lucius said, patting Harry's knee again.“Alright, works for me,” Harry told him. Quietly, he added, “As long as it's fine with Sirius.”“It's good with me. We need something for obvious reasons. This is just another area it can help,” Sirius told him. “We talked about it a little inside and decided Lucius is going to look through what he owns to see what he can find. We don't think that's viable though. I'm going to start going through my papers as well. What we think is going to be the best option is one of your properties. Even I'm not sure what all James owned. I don't think Albus does either. We'll find something, somewhere. Once this whole nightmare finally completes the way we think it will, we're getting out. Snape said he'll come up with something, somewhere, to make it look good. We'll then hide until it comes to the point we can't. I don't know what's all coming with this seer bit, but from what your mum said, you're going to be needed. We'll have to see on that part. We'll protect you though, we can damned well guarantee that. Lucius and I, alone, are more than a match for anyone that thinks they can pull something stupid with you.”“We are,” Lucius nodded. “Trust in that. We'll also make damned sure you can defend yourself. Lupin, myself and Sirius are more than capable of teaching you what you need to know in that area. And we will.”“Alright,” Harry said, leaning back and shutting his eyes. “Bloody hell, this is a mess. It was bad enough before this year. Since then—I'm not sure how much more I can take being dumped on me.”“You're not the only one,” Sirius said softly, shaking his head. “We'll manage. It's not just the two of us dealing with it. We have several other people helping. That'll make it easier, Harry.”“Many of us have had our worlds turned on their axis,” Lucius admitted, feeling slightly guilty as he knew what else was coming with the mess as well.Playing through the prophecy in his head, Harry began to wonder about the parts they hadn't figured out. Couple that with what his mum had said to Sirius about getting help from an area they didn't expect and he thought he might have a couple of pieces sliding into place. He didn't like what it might mean either. If it was right, he wasn't sure how well any of them would handle it. Shaking his head once more, running his fingers through his hair, making it stand on end, he said, “I think I want to go upstairs and lay down.”“That might be a good idea. I'll join you,” Sirius said, standing.“Let me get with Severus then I will as well,” Lucius said quietly, watching the two. When he saw them nod and head inside, he sighed then went to find his old friend.
Dozing, lying between Sirius and Lucius, both of who were as well from what he could tell, Harry's brow furrowed as he felt something very strange. It started at his left ankle then seemed to slither up his body, wrapping around him, from under his skin. No, it wasn't anything painful or uncomfortable, just strange feeling. When it coiled around his torso and the 'head' of it, at least that's what he thought it was, rested on his shoulder, he began to hear a soft hissing in his ear. After that, he felt something wrap around him. It wasn't an external thing, but something internal. It felt like wings of some kind, at least that's what he thought they felt like. Shifting, not sure what to do or if he could wake up, he didn't know what to make of all this. Then the soft hissing, something that was soothing in some way he couldn't put his finger on, became something he could understand. The accent was old fashioned, something he had heard before, or so he thought, but he understood it.
“You're safe,” a soft hissy voice told him soothingly. “Your men will protect you, viciously if they have to. They will let no harm come to you, from anyone. I am here as well. Soon I will find my body and we'll be together just like all your ancestors that followed this path have been with me. Trust me, Harry. I will ensure you aren't harmed.”“Who are you?” Harry asked softly, internally of course. There was something so familiar about this voice, but he didn't know where it was from.“We met for the first time that awful night so long ago. I've been with you since then, Harry. And I've protected you the best I could.”“The snake,” Harry said softly, stiffening up.“Oh yes.” The hissy voice told him softly, keeping a soothing tone as it did. “I've gone by many names over the centuries. Each seer chooses a different one for me. You will choose one as well when the time comes. For now, I'm just your friend. We can talk here and there as you're coming close to the time you come into your full power. It's nothing to worry about, Harry.”“Oh, bloody hell,” Harry moaned in mental pain. “More strangeness.”“Well, yes, it could be termed that,” the hissy voice chuckled. “You will get used to it. I won't harm you. You know that though.”Thinking that over, brow puckering more, Harry admitted, “Yeah, I do. I don't know how, but I do.”“Because I've always been here. You many not remember it, but I have been. We just couldn't talk like we do now because the power wasn't there. I've been here waiting for all these years. The time is coming.” The voice told him. “Trust your men, Harry. There is a reason they are your bondmates and not others. The power they have will protect you. The Black family line is long and pure. Sirius contains more power than any other because of what he's been through and his unwillingness to bow to so much. Lucius is more powerful than his father ever thought of being. He is different than others that came before him. Time changed him and he knows it. He's had to make choices because of that. He's made the right one. Trust them, Harry, even if you don't trust me. They will defend you, viciously. They won't hurt you. You know Sirius won't. He adores you in a way he hasn't anyone in his entire life. Lucius is proving he won't. His reason for hiding what he is will become clear. It's nothing that will hurt or put you in danger. The time will come that you'll know. You just need to adjust first. Trust them. That's all you have to do.”“Alright,” Harry agreed. Sirius was easy, of course. It had always been there. Lucius—he was leaning in that direction.“I can give you a choice, Harry,” the voice said softly.“What choice is that?” Harry asked warily, wondering what this was about.“I can manifest the final power. Or push the circumstances to manifest it quickly. Then you can go from there,” the voice said gently.Stiffening up, Harry asked, warily, “Will it hurt?”“Yes,” the voice told him truthfully. “It will be very painful. However, once it's done, you can press on. From there, it'll get better, I give you my word. Once it happens, let Lucius activate the bond partially. It'll give you much relief until you complete it. Manifesting the final power you need will set much into motion, Harry, and it will get easier on you. The pain from the shields will be gone and what visions you get won't be as bad. It'll make life easier. Once I join you, it'll be even better than that. That will be worth the pain you have to endure.”Not sure about this, Harry thought it over. Sighing, he said, “It's coming anyway, isn't it?”“Yes,” the voice admitted. “The longer you wait for it to manifest, the worse you're going to suffer because of so much. Let it happen, Harry. Let me help you.”“Alright,” Harry sighed, not liking this at all, but willing to give it a try. “What do I have to do?” He asked.“Nothing. Let me do all the work. I'll manage. When the time comes, you'll know. I promise you will. Just let your instinct and me steer you. You will know what to do when the time comes. I'll guide you if you flounder,” the voice soothed.“I don't want any of this,” Harry groused, sounding sour.“None did,” the voice told him softly. “It's a curse and a blessing, both, one you have no choice in. It was predestined, from a time long before you were born. It goes back to the time of my first companion on this side of the world. You were meant to be the one. There is nothing that can change it. I can help, though. Let me do that. It's part of my job. Just trust me.”“I will,” Harry sighed, not liking this and fearing what was to come.“Don't fret. It'll be over soon then it'll get much better. Just keep that in mind,” the snake hissed softly. Wrapping tighter around the young man, he began to hiss softly, singing an old lullaby from his side of the world, one that soothed children for so long until the language became lost with the ages.Though worried about what was coming, Harry began to relax then fully fell asleep to the hissing, feeling better.
