Chapter 20
PJ held his breath, involuntarily, until he finished checking his wand in at the Ministry. While he had done this a few times before, there was always an irrational fear the slip that would shoot out the end would give his real name. It was illogical, he understood this, because he was legally PJ Broadmoor now and even his old wand would show that name, but it was there. Once it finished, with his name showing as expected, he exhaled then let Remus and Sirius guide him away.
They were here to give their statements about the mess the day before. From what he was assured and knew of such matters, this shouldn't take more than a half an hour. That was all. None of them were suspects in anything and just needed to tell what they knew. He could manage without a problem. What he also planned to do was keep his ears peeled for any information that he might pick up from people talking around them. As it was the Ministry, he might manage a few bits that could help both him and Du Bois. Even if it was minor, something might give them somewhere else to look. From what he saw in the Prophet, Fudge wasn't ready to concede that it was Voldemort, though he was admitting, and PJ was sure it was grudgingly, former Death Eaters were involved. Of course, that made him roll his eyes. He supposed that it would take the man getting slapped in the face in a way he couldn't deny for him to finally admit it. And he was sure that wasn't long in coming. As Sirius and Remus guided him to the elevator and they headed to the right floor, he leaned closer to Sirius when he said his name softly, waiting to see what he had to say.“Nothing to worry about,” Sirius assured him softly, putting a hand on his back. “Just tell them everything. All they're interested in is what happened, not you.” He assumed there was a bout of nerves over this because of all PJ had to hide from the world. “Madam Bones will probably be the one to question us. She's the one you talked to after that nightmare at Hogsmeade.”“Just tell her everything you remember like you did last time, then we'll get out,” Remus added softly, leaning closer to the two as the elevator shuddered to a stop so some could leave and others get on.“Not a problem,” PJ assured both of them, though he was tense over what was coming. He didn't like dealing with the 'authorities' on some matters because he always worried something might slip out and give away who he really was or his other job. Though he went by the old ingrained habit of watching what he said carefully, that apprehension of discovery was always there. When the elevator shuddered to another stop on the floor they needed, he tensed up and gave a sigh. It was time.He allowed Remus and Sirius to guide him through the halls to where they needed to go. As he walked, his eyes darted all over and he kept an ear cocked for anything that he might overhear. It was an old habit, but one which served him well over the years, so he would do so once more.As they reached the office, they found Madam Bones waiting on them, talking to her secretary. With a nod to them as they stepped up, she ushered them into her office. Though more apprehensive, PJ went in, wanting to get this over with.
“You're sure that it was Draco Malfoy that attacked and he cast the Killing Curse?” Madam Bones asked the three there, though she was focusing on PJ since he managed to get a better look than the other two.
“Absolutely,” PJ nodded. “On both counts.” Remus and Sirius confirmed the question as well. After making a note of what was said on the form she had, she asked, “How do you know it was the Killing Curse?”Once Sirius and Remus explained how they knew what it was, PJ told her, “I've seen it used before while in the States when they had to put down a couple animals that were attacking. It's used for such matters there.” While it was the truth, he left out the part about his mother in what the Dementors brought up when they were close.“Yes, it is,” Madam Bones confirmed with a nod, noting that as well. “If you don't mind—what animals?” She was just curious, nothing more. It was well known many countries used the Killing Curse on animals for various reasons.“Two Drake/Croc hybrids that were terrorizing a town I was close to,” PJ explained, leaning back and crossing his legs. It was the truth, so he had no problem explaining it to her, knowing she could easily check and it would end up confirmed. “Someone had bred them illegally then they managed to get loose. Caused all kinds of problems and even Muggles noticed.”“That couldn't have been pleasant,” Amelia sighed with a wince, thinking of the major issues such creatures running amok could cause, especially if Muggles noticed them.“It was plenty nasty,” PJ admitted with a shake of his head. After finishing filling out the forms, she passed them over for the three to sign then signed it herself and sent them off for filing. With a sigh, she leaned back in her chair and said, “That's all I need, gentlemen. Your help was most appreciated. If it comes to where it has to go to court, I'll let you know.”“What's the probability of it getting that far?” Remus asked, curious, though he expected that it wouldn't because of who was involved.A sour look on her face, Amelia shook her head, “I don't anticipate it getting to that point. It's my thought that something will gum the works up before it does. We'll see. While we want to prosecute over what happened, I'm not sure if we'll manage. If it comes to that, I'll let everyone know.” Then standing, she came around her desk and shook their hands before saying, “Your help is appreciated and that's all I need.”When they finished, Sirius and Remus guided PJ out of the office again, relieved. It had gone fine, though they expected it to, so they could get out of there without a major misstep of some kind.As he guided PJ along, Sirius said, “I vote we find somewhere for a bite to eat then we'll head home and see what's going on. After that—we'll find something to do.”“Sounds good,” PJ nodded. “I'll let you two decide where as I'm still figuring out what is where and which places to avoid.”“There's a small cafe not far from here that has wonderful food,” Remus told him as they once more stepped into the elevator. “We can sit outside and enjoy the fresh air and good weather.”“Sounds like a plan to me,” Sirius agreed with a nod then began asking PJ if there was anything else he needed to do before they went home so they could plan accordingly.
Why he expected the Prophet to actually really report what went on the day before PJ would never know, but he was once again sorely disappointed. While they did cover the whole bit that happened, it was so glossed over when it came to what really took place, it sounded like a minor scuffle. They did mention possible former Death Eater involvement, but didn't any names. The only good part he could see was he was mentioned and the bit about it being a book signing for his latest release.
However, there was also a downside; Skeeter. It seemed the woman was upset she hadn't been allowed in, so she did a bit of her normal with the whole being catty over some of it. Sure, she mentioned his books and other parts which she obviously picked up from other interviews he did, then went on about him and Sirius being together while he did the signing, something she had probably seen before she was shown the door, but ended up sniping slightly, mentioning he was snobbish. With a roll of his eyes after reading what she had to say, PJ tossed the paper on the table and snorted. “I pissed her off, that's for sure.”“Oh, you did,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. He had read it before they left and knew her claws were now out. “Nothing to worry about. She'll find something else to focus on soon. I'm sure that someone else will end up in her sights and she'll turn her attentions there.”“With everyone else reporting how it is with you and the good interviews they've printed, don't worry about here. Most know she's just a second rate gossip. The Prophet isn't as popular as it once was,” Sirius assured him, though he didn't like what was written either. In fact, it made him mad. He just knew to leave it by now, though, as he didn't want to add fuel to the fire. “Bits like this don't help, especially with other papers reporting the facts and truth.” With that, he picked up one of PJ's papers from the States and pointed to the article about what happened. “Those are the facts and everyone is going to know it. It's not the only one reporting them correctly, either. Even those stalwarts that read the Prophet know the facts when they're whacked with them. We can just hope that something finally slaps all of them with reality and they step up.”“They won't,” PJ snorted, shaking his head. “I took them to the cleaners over it and nothing changed but them getting ruffled feathers. The only thing that came of it was them trying to refute what was said. Their tantrum over it changed nothing and they still just go on with the bullshit. I doubt anything is going to change it.”“There is that,” Remus admitted with a sigh and shrug of his shoulders, head shaking sadly.“We'll ignore it. That's the best way to handle it,” Sirius told him, reaching over to pat his back.“Easier said than done, but I'll try,” PJ groaned, slumping. “Right—enough of that. Anything we're planning today? I don't have anything to tend to but the normal, so I'm good.” Then he stopped and waited, looking between the two.“No, nothing,” Sirius told him with a smile and shake of his head. “Though we can probably expect plenty in and out all day over this mess. There is a lot we need to take care of and prepare for. During the afternoon it should be calm, but once normal working hours are over, we can expect traffic.”“Good,” PJ said with some relief. He had enough excitement to last him for quite some time and just wanted to go upstairs to sleep for a while. Then he would tackle working on his book again tonight since it had been stalled by what happened.“There is something from my end,” Remus said softly, glancing between the two. “Tonight, late, Tonks is coming over. Since PJ agreed to let her in on the secret, I thought we could get together and hash it out then. She doesn’t know what I want to talk to her about, though she knows you're both involved, just that I want it done late so we don't risk anyone else in the house at the time. My thought was to use your room to take care of it because it's so secure.”“As long you're damned sure she'll say nothing, that's fine,” PJ told him softly, looking at him.“She won't, you have my word,” Remus reassured him with a smile. “Tonks is someone you can trust implicitly. We've trusted her with many secrets over the years that are big. She's kept them all.”“I wouldn’t agree either if I didn’t think she could be circumspect,” Sirius chimed in, looking at PJ. “Tonks is good, you have my promise.”“Then we can do it,” PJ agreed, though was still wary. It was something he would have to wait and see on before he calmed down.“We'll tend to it tonight then go on from there,” Remus told him, knowing only Tonks proving she could be trusted would alleviate his fears. Changing topics, he asked, “You said something about visiting T next week?”“She's settled in and I thought it was a good idea to visit. I need to go anyway to check on my vaults since the transfer is done, to pick up the keys, paperwork and all that. My thought was it would be a good surprise for her since she won't expect it. The trip there isn't bad as it's not that far and we just get a Portkey. I get that through the Swiss, not the Ministry, but I need to get the paperwork set up for it now.”“Go ahead and get it started,” Sirius told him, smiling. “We'll arrange around whatever day you set it up for. And we can take as much time as you want. It'll probably do all of us good to get away for the day and have some fun without having to worry about looking over our shoulders like we are even in the Muggle parts around here. Remus and I'll come up with some glamours so we don't give away who we are.”“This should be most fun,” Remus admitted with a smile himself. He was quite looking forward to visiting Switzerland, even if it was just for the day.
“So, what do you want to talk to me about?” Tonks asked, flopping in a comfortable chair in Sirius' room. All Remus had told her was it was a huge secret, something she had to keep. Oh, she would, no doubt there, but was curious. She trusted both of them completely, so she didn't think it was anything horrible.
As she situated herself, she looked around. While she hadn't been in Sirius' room before, she found it odd there were two beds in here. If he was sharing it with his lover, one would think they would just share one. After all, that's what most did. She was going to wait to see what was said before she jumped to any conclusions, though.Sirius made sure to put up stronger wards, though the ones on the room were about as good as you could get. Once he did, he walked over and took a seat on the arm of the chair PJ was in and waited for Remus to sit down by Tonks. When they were all settled, he said, “This can go no further. I mean it, Tonks. It's big and you have to keep it to yourself.”“It's come down to we need a tad more help in—well, you'll understand shortly,” Remus told her, putting a hand on her shoulder and giving it a squeeze.“Of course, my word,” she told them with a nod of her head, pink hair bouncing slightly. Then she looked between the three and waited, more curious than ever. After a glance at PJ, who was looking at him, Sirius then motioned for Remus to explain what was really going on. Their thought was Tonks would take it better coming from him.As she listened, Tonks' eyes widened. She glanced between the three there then her eyes lit on PJ. When, to prove the point PJ removed the slight glamour and changed his contacts to clear, she swallowed thickly. Then, as Remus finished, she started grinning, hair going a brighter shade of pink than ever. With a loud laugh, she said, “This is perfect! You three—it's genius!”Sirius laughed and leaned back, hand on PJ's shoulder. “We figured you'd appreciate what we did.”“Bloody brilliant,” she said, still grinning. “Right under everyone's noses and no one has a clue! It's—you lot—where you came up with this idea I will never know, but it's worked. And will continue to. Albus has everyone scrambling all over, checking out of the country, when he's right here.” That's where she sobered up, though. Once more glancing around, she asked, “What do you need from me? I assume you wanted me to know for some reason besides my relationship with Remus.”“It's getting complicated and dangerous enough that we might need help keeping the secret,” Remus explained, slipping his arm around her and holding her close. “We thought it best to come out with it now so you would know before we end up in the middle of whatever and need help then.”Now understanding, Tonks nodded, “Will do. You need anything, you let me know and I'll help all I can. I mean it!” Serious look sliding over her face, she looked at PJ and said, “I don't agree with what Albus wants to do. Your reasons for not wanting to help are sound and should be honored. This fight is a choice. It was, and is, for all of us. You should have the same choice. No one has the right to force you into it.”“I won't help,” PJ told her honestly with a shake of his head. “Nothing can entice me into it.”“Other than how he already is,” Sirius added, arm slipping around PJ and pulling him close. “As Remus pointed out to me, it's helping more than anything else had up to this point.”“It is,” Tonks agreed, head bobbing enthusiastically. “You have no idea how much. It's—well, the push in the right direction came from what some of those articles have said. And it keeps coming. Everyone is ignoring the Prophet, except Fudge and his toadies. He's hoping the public does as well, but they aren't. Even if we don't get help from them, it at least gives them fair warning what's coming. They can protect themselves that way.”“We want this to continue, Tonks,” Remus told her softly, smiling as this had gone perfectly. “He can help us. If he can't do it, he has contacts that he can get the information to. We all need him in that capacity. Albus—he might be trying to do the right thing now, though I'm not sure he will anymore, and is trying to help, but we need this pushed. I'm sure you know why.”“I do and will help all I can,” Tonks assured all of them with another vigorous nod. “Anything you need and the secret is safe with me. I swear it is.”“We need it kept in the strictest of confidence,” Sirius told her, though was sure by now that she would. “It's to protect him. We're managing so far and we need it to continue. Let them hunt for him all over the world. The longer we draw it out, the more likely this mess will come to a head.”“And I agree,” she assured the three grinning. Then she sobered up and added, “I appreciate you trusting me enough to let me in on the secret.”“It was Remus' idea and we thought it was a good one,” Sirius smiled. “After all, if you're with him, you know he's sneakier than anyone gives him credit for.”Tonks laughed after seeing the genial, almost innocent smile on Remus' face and nodded, “He is! I know this. Most don't, though.”“Which is what we count on, too,” Sirius chuckled, grinning bigger.“So, you two are really working towards being a couple?” Tonks asked, leaning against Remus, still smiling.“We're trying to see if it'll work,” Sirius told her, happy it went so well, though he didn't expect problems. This was just one more layer of protection as far as he saw it. And a way to get help if they needed it. While everything had run smoothly until now, one never knew.
About five in the morning, PJ leaned back in his desk chair and groaned. He had written his nightly goal when it came to the word count and was tired, so he didn't think pressing on was a good idea. If he did, he was likely to mess it up then have to go back the following night and fix it or, even worse, gut what he had done and start over. Knowing better, he had given up. Instead, he pressed on with some bits he needed to take care of.
He had filled out the application for the Portkey to Switzerland and sent Poe off with it. The bird had already returned, of course. He would know in a couple days when they would go so they could plan accordingly. Then he had organized some notes he had taken for both news stories and his new novel. Once those were done, he was still too awake to sleep, but not alert enough to do anything constructive when it came to actual work. So, rather than lay down, as he knew he wouldn't be able to sleep yet, he decided to finish going through the letters from his mum. If he finished going through them in the next day or two, he could put them in his vault when they went to Switzerland. With what they were, he would feel better if they were out of the house, though he knew their room was as protected as they could get it.With a heavy sigh as he tossed the letter he finished into one of the piles he created, the one that didn't have much information in it and was just his mum trying to talk to her sister, Harry rolled his neck, smiling when it cracked. While he wasn't gaining much information for a story, something Toonie seemed like she was alluding to when handing them over, he liked the fact that it seemed like he was getting to know his mum's personality. Since he didn't have much on her or his dad, other than some of what people told him over the years, it felt good. It was like a connection he didn't have before and he adored it.After picking up the next from the pile, he was happy to see there were only a dozen or so left after this one. Once more leaning back, propping his feet up on his desk as he did, he began to read through it. As he did, he realized this one was from about the time they went into hiding. The letters had all been in a jumble, not in any kind of chronological order and he hadn't tried to sort them out either, so he was getting pieces all over. Since there wasn't much real information in them, he didn't mind, it was just sometimes a problem trying to place when they were from.As he read, his brow drew down, soaking in the information there and trying to meld it with what he knew of that time. Then he hit the third page. That's where he stopped and his eyes widened. Straightening up quickly, he pulled his feet off the desk and reread the second paragraph over four times to make sure he understood what was said. Oh bloody fucking hell! Though he had known since Sirius' escape who actually betrayed his parents, he now knew who gave up the Prophecy and he was pissed.Though he quickly finished the letter and absorbed what was there, he then tossed it aside and stood. Beginning to pace, running his fingers through his hair, he snarled. Fucking Snape! He gave up the prophecy that got his parents killed. And it was probably why he was now spying. There had to be more, though. He just didn't know what it was. After a few treks around his side of the room, he stopped and looked at the partition that was up, knowing Sirius was asleep on the other side. From what he knew, no one, except that damned old man anyway, knew who overheard that Prophecy then passed it. And he wasn't sure he should tell anyone, honestly. Really? He didn't want to know. With a sigh, he looked at the floor and shook his head. Now what did he do? Did he tell Sirius and Remus? He was sure they didn't know either. Huffing, he shook his head. Yeah, this whole mess just kept getting more complicated as he learned more.Once more eying the partition, he ran his fingers through his hair then flopped down in the chair. Slouching, he stared at the letter he just read, wondering what to do and how he would face the man again. He needed to think on that tidbit, long and hard.Without thinking, trying to push aside what he just learned, he grabbed the next letter, hoping there weren't any more bombshells, and began to read. As he went through the mundane, his mind kept circling back to what he just learned, not sure what to do.
