Chapter 20
As Draco read through the mass of papers Bill and Potter had written out detailing what had gone on for all these years, his eyes were wide and he didn't know what to make of some of it. Of course, some of it he knew from having been in the castle. Because he wasn't in the middle when most of it took place, he had only heard it second hand. What was written here certainly wasn't what he heard or assumed went on, that's for sure! In fact, some of it was directly opposite what he thought happened. And the conclusions they had or what was figured out later were far different. From what he saw written, the conclusions they drew made sense, far more than some of what it looked like. Which made him wonder what in Merlin's good name was really going on.
When he finished reading, he put the papers down on the table then listened more intently. Charlie was walking everyone through what he knew. Though most of it was covered in what was written up, there were some odd bits and bobs which weren't. They didn't add much, but some, and it shored up the feeling there was plenty dung smelling going on beyond Potter being Dumbledore's golden boy. In fact, he was treated quite badly, from the sound of it, and used for several means.Though he listened in to what was said around him, his mind was turning over everything, trying to meld it with what he had seen or heard about over the years and felt mildly ill. His whole perception of Potter was changing and he felt horrified over what he went through. No one in their right mind would ever have tried some of these stunts with him because his father would have stepped in then they would have paid and known better than to attempt it again. Potter didn't have anyone who had or cared, from the sound of it. He wouldn't have known what to do if he didn't have his parents and then had to deal with some of what he had alone. Potter had, though, while having to keep up a front and watch his back at the same time. At the ages they were talking about, he wasn't sure if he could have managed on his own. When Charlie finished going over what he knew, Draco listened to his father and Lupin talk about what they were planning. Some of it he could understand, and the why behind it, but others he didn't. He supposed the bit with Professor Snape was because he wasn't as close to the situation as the rest. They seemed to know more about some bits with him than he ever did. Well, honestly, he only knew the man through school and his father talking to him at times, not anything too personal. Lupin and Black went to school with him, so he supposed they had a better ground on how to judge what to do.After everyone stopped talking, he asked, looking around, “The three are really going to leave if looks like it'll get bad or Dumbledore finds out?”“We're planning on it,” Sirius told him, leaning back with a groan, chin dropping to his chest. “It's my thought we'll have to anyway to get Harry out of this mess. Not sure what's happening here, but it's a right nasty situation. And I doubt any of us will get a straight answer out of Albus. If what Snape comes across with is bad enough, if we can manage to get it out of him, we probably need out.”“In all honesty, I think leaving is safest for all of us,” Bill tossed in there with a shake of his head, putting a hand on Harry's back. “We all know this war needs to end. The three of us will tell you it does, fast. It comes down to what some are willing to do to get it there. We expect the other side to do anything he can think of. What we didn't expect was for Albus to pull the same stunts. I think I can safely speak for Sirius when I say we won't let it happen.”When he heard Sirius agree, Lucius told his son, “We agree as well. All of those in the middle of this mess and the Ministry are more than capable of ending the nightmare. Your mother and I did everything in our power to make damned certain you weren't pulled in, Draco. I think Harry deserves the same kind of protection, as does everyone your age. This is something adults need to take on, not teenagers.”“It's nothing to concern yourself with,” Remus told him with a small smile. “Your father thinks he has somewhere temporary for them to stay until they decide where they're going or can find a place of their own. My understanding is they'll be safe there, no matter what.”“My thought is the sooner the better here,” Charlie grumbled, looking around. “We can try to figure part of this mess out and get all of you a longer tether, but you need to prepare to go as fast as you can. It's not that we don't want you around or are forcing you, but I have a feeling we won't learn what's really going on until you're out. And I mean as far away as you can get. The other side of the damned world is probably for the best.”“We do agree there,” Bill answered with a dry chuckle and shake of his head. “Our thought is to get as much as we can before we vanish. If it looks like it'll grow even worse, we're out, no matter what we might want to still find out.”Charlie straightened up then grabbed a spare blank parchment and quill. Brow furrowed, he said, “Let's get something off to Fred and George. You lot said you need some potions picked up. While it's not pressing, we'll say something to them about grabbing them on the way home so we have a reason to send them a note. Then we'll use what we always did for passing notes we didn't want anyone finding out about. They'll figure it out quickly then make it to where they can read it and Severus won't be any the wiser. If we have them starting now, we can at least get some before we have to press Severus. Well, and have an idea what we're dealing with when it comes to him.”“We'll let you both take on the wording as you know best how to get what you want across to them,” Remus told them, pleased. “Just make sure they know you've told us all you can about this muddled mess and we're trying to sort it out, nothing nefarious.”“Not to worry, we've had plenty of practice doing this bit,” Bill grinned, leaning over to watch what Charlie wrote. “They'll pick up on what we want and go from there. With how those two are, and the practice they've had over the years at various areas, they'll get some.”“Oh, with those two involved, I have no doubt,” Lucius snorted, smirking and looking amused. As they worked, he began asking his son about the dragons. The day before, Draco was actually excited when he came home and talked about all he saw, seeming to like it. As his son was settling down and accepting what was going on, he could be closer than before, though not where it had been before the whole incident where he was forced away. So, he would take advantage and talk to him a while.
After peering over George's shoulder to make sure Snape wasn't around, Fred went back to reading the letter their brother's had sent. As would be expected, there was a legitimate reason for the letter coming, the errand being something they would tend to before going home, it was the rest they were highly interested in.
When they both read it and understood, George vanished the letter then whispered, “Right, we have a mission.”“From the sound of what's there, it's urgent, too,” Fred said with a solemn nod.“Let's see what we can wiggle out of Severus without him realizing we're fishing for information,” George whispered back.“Not as easy as it sounds, but I think we're up to the task,” Fred told him with a little grin.“Of course, brother of mine,” George chuckled, grinning himself. Then he sobered up and added, glancing around to make sure Severus wasn't paying attention. “Normally, this is an easy task, something we've managed many times before, but I think our skills will end up tested in a way they haven't been before.”“Oh, indeed,” Fred nodded. “Severus isn't like the others we've managed with. We'll have to tread very lightly or he'll suspect something is off.”“He's not the trusting sort to start with. Factor in he distrusts almost everything we do or say anyway and we have a hard road ahead of us to get what we need,” George sighed. “Which means, we have to plot.”“And make sure he can't hear us doing it,” Fred nodded.“We'll manage, we always do,” George grinned just a tad.“Oh yes, we just need to go about it another way. Good practice for us,” Fred tossed in, grinning himself.“He won't know what hit him,” they finally said together, grinning evilly.A glance towards the back showed Severus passing by the doorway, which meant they had to change topics. “Right, we have to pick this up tonight, so we best fill him in on what we're doing,” George said, handing the 'real' message to Fred.“Shouldn't take but a couple minutes,” Fred said conversationally, heading towards the back room. “We won't have a problem.”“An in and out operation,” George nodded. “We'll make sure we have it set up for a certain day of the week so we can just pop in,” he said as he stepped into the back room. When he saw Severus looking at them, eyebrow up, Fred passed the note to him and explained. From here on out, they needed to pay attention and launch in to find what they wanted to know. As it was an operation they had to tread lightly with, they would go for small bits and pass them along. Between the two of them, they could manage, it would just take time.
Lucius saw Remus flop on the bed after his normal nightly ritual in the bathroom, brow furrowed. While he knew being a werewolf took its toll on someone, he hadn't seen it first hand until now. Remus looked exhausted with dark circles under his eyes and that drawn, tired look that spoke of fatigue. The night before, Remus had fallen asleep far earlier, the book he was reading still on his chest. Lucius wasn't sure if this was normal or more exaggerated because of the approaching full moon. And he was a tad concerned.
After slipping in bed himself, Lucius asked, gently, “You're fine, are you not? It appears you're more tired than normal. Is this from the approaching full moon or just the general stresses of what's happening?”“It's the full moon,” Remus told him with a sigh and shake of his head. “This is normal for what comes. Though the stress of what we're dealing with is probably exaggerating it. I'm always tired around this time and tend to sleep more. It's nothing to worry about, Lucius.”“I assumed,” Lucius nodded. “All I wanted to do was confirm it, nothing more.” Then, gently, he said, “Rest all you need. Nothing we're dealing with is urgent enough it's required you push yourself. Extra naps are fine and no hardship.”“I think naps are coming,” Remus chuckled dryly. “It's something I can't help.”“We'll manage fine,” Lucius assured him, planning to see what they could do to take the strain off of Remus so he could get some extra sleep. While there wasn't much they were tending to, they could cut back and relax for a time.Though it was far earlier than they normal went to sleep, Remus already looked like he could, so Lucius thought it best to knock off what they were working on and let him rest. After grabbing the book he had been reading for pleasure, he leaned over and kissed Remus softly. “Rest. We can worry about whatever in the morning.”“Good idea,” Remus said with a smile. After putting his own book on the table beside the bed, he curled up under the covers and was soon asleep.Though Lucius tried to read after Remus went to sleep, he couldn't quite focus on the words. Instead, he was honing in on the man beside him. The kiss was normal by now, something that just seemed to evolve and felt 'right', so they went with it. While the kiss was part of what he was focused on, the other was how disturbed he was by how tired his partner was. Something was telling him he needed to find a way to set it to rights. As he knew so little about lycanthropy, he didn't know what he could do to help, or if he could. It was troubling him, though. As he flipped the page once he finally managed to read it all, he began to ponder how to make this time of the month easier on Remus. While he wasn't sure where to start, he would come up with something.
After looking at the list Bill passed back to him, with Harry leaning in to glance over it as well, Sirius nodded. “This is at least a start,” he sighed. “There are plenty of bits we need to handle now to have everything in place if we have to leave.”
“True,” Bill nodded. “Which is why we need as much in place as we can get. Gringotts will be the one that takes the most time, as we both know. If we at least start the forms now and keep going, we should have the money set up to where we can use it from anywhere in the world. While I'm sure the time is coming we're going to vanish, probably sooner than any of us anticipate, I doubt it'll be in a month's time unless all hell breaks loose somewhere.”“You can handle filling out whatever and know what we need, don't you, Bill?” Harry asked, looking at him, though he was sure about the answer.“I can, easily. I even know which forms we need,” Bill assured him. “Once I get it all started, I even know how to go about filing it so no one finds out. We need to employ such measures. While those in the house will know, we want no one else being able to track what we're doing.”Then, looking at Sirius, he added, “We also need to get with your solicitor to draw up documents for temporary stewardship of the house. I'd say let Remus tend to whatever with it. They need to keep the house so Lucius and the others are safe. Snape—he might not like it, but he needs to stay right where he is. I'm damned sure the other side has figured out something is really wrong and will be looking for his head by now.”“I'll send something off tomorrow and let him draw up papers,” Sirius nodded. “The same with taking care of whatever else comes up in my absence. I know he won't pull anything wonky.”“You might want him to get his hands on whatever you need when it comes to me as well,” Harry said, looking at his godfather. “I'll be of legal age next month, so that's not a bother for anything, but we need some bits, like my birth certificate and whatever. Not to mention passports. You both have one, but I don't and I have no idea what it takes or how long, to get one.”As he jotted what Harry suggested down on the sheet, Sirius nodded. “As it's Magical, the passport doesn't take long, but it needs done, fast. The same with everything else. We can say to anyone who asks we need it for your schooling, not a lie, of course, so they don't think anything is off. And we need to shore up plenty here to make sure we have everything ready to go. Then we need to work on finding somewhere. Lucius said he has a house we can use for a while, but I don't want to stay there any longer than I would have to. I'm sure Lucius and the rest can run anyone in circles to keep us safe, but I want somewhere no one knows about.”“Egypt is out,” Bill said, looking between the two. “They would look there first, I would think. The same with anywhere common. Which means we have to look at not common and prepare. We can't do everything, obviously, but we're not just dropping ourselves in a strange country without some kind of idea what we're doing or how to go about anything. It also means we need to start putting out feelers for a house or flat of some kind. And do it on the sly so no one anywhere gets wind of it. Albus has some long arms and gets hold of the strangest information you could imagine. We need to stay alert for him finding out.”“I'll add that to all the rest for the solicitor to take on. I'm sure he knows a way.” Sirius told him, writing it down as well.“Look, not sure about this, but we might want to make sure there is a notarized statement, official something, I don't know, in the hands of the solicitor so the Ministry doesn't end up in the middle and hunting for us.” Harry said, looking between the two. “I get I'll be a legal adult, but you know how it goes.”“Oh, we do,” Bill snorted, rolling his eyes. “Might be a good idea to cover our hind quarters, that's for certain.”“Let's see what he has to say on the matter and go from there,” Sirius told them, adding that suggestion to the ever growing list. “I'm sure he'll know plenty we have to take care of before we can even think about running.”“Better way to go about it,” Bill nodded. “He can probably come up with something so we don't all drive ourselves mental trying to cover everything. Well, and we'll get with Lucius to see what he says. I'm sure he'll have some suggestions we need. I remember what all I needed to go Egypt. Since it was for a job and involved a worker's visa, it's probably different. In the end, we can get it all.”After looking over the list, Sirius slid it aside then leaned back. Lacing his fingers behind his head, he stretched out with a groan then said, “I'll be honest that I want out as fast we can manage. No sense in giving anyone time to spin this whatever or throw spanners in it. If we aren't here, they can't do a damned thing. However, we need to get the tether and other nightmares with this mess as sorted as we can manage. So, I say that's our focus.”
“Good idea, Sirius. Problem is, none of us have a clue how we've managed what we have until now,” Harry snorted, slouching down. “All we have are hints, nothing solid.”“True,” Bill groaned, head dropping forward as he folded his arms over his chest. “And, really, we need as much as we can get before we vanish, if we can manage. And how to figure it out is beyond me. All of us are working on parts and getting nowhere.”“There is that,” Sirius sighed. Not opening his eyes, he tried to think what they could manage and was coming up with nothing. So far, they were all doing everything they could because almost everyone in the house was affected and needed the information. It was the one area he didn't think anyone could help with, so there was no point dwelling on it. Which meant they just had to focus more, that's all.Instead of lingering there, he opened his eyes then asked Bill, “What did Fred and George say in the letter?” The two had slipped Bill something after supper, making sure Snape didn't see. So, he was curious. With a grin, Bill told him, chuckling, “They read what we sent and are on the case. From what they wrote, it's going to take some time, but they'll start working on Severus to see what they can wiggle out of him. With those two? They'll manage, it'll just take time. All they said was they have to go about it differently than they normally do and it'll take time. As they get whatever, they'll pass it along so we can use it.”“Good,” Sirius nodded, grinning himself. “If you can, tell them we'll help all we can if they need it, or give suggestions if we have to. Lucius might be a good one for them to use for that end. He knows Snape fairly well.”“They'll get it in the end, give them time,” Harry added, grinning himself. “Those two have wiggled plenty out of people over the years. Usually without them realizing they've given it up, too! Which is perfect.”“Yup,” Sirius nodded, now chuckling. “I think those two are sneakier than the four of the Marauders were in school, actually.”Deciding that was more than enough, as they would just make themselves barmy trying to work everything out and having no way of doing so, Sirius changed topics. “Right, let's have some fun. We have pranks in the works and should probably work on those. After all, it will be a ton of fun to see the effects! So, Harry, grab what we were working on and we'll get back to it. Not sure how long it'll take to get them done and I at least want to go out with a bang if we're going to run.”Harry grinned again then summoned everything they had been mucking with and settled in. Hearing Bill laugh, he chuckled a little. Though it wasn't a huge deal, more like just something to do since they were stuck in the house most of the time, he liked it. He had a lot of fun working with the two. Not only did he learn plenty, but it was nice just to spend time with them and not end up all stressed out trying to figure out the nightmare they were in the middle of. It helped to distract all of them for a time.Harry laughed as Sirius made it clear he wanted to do the color changing bit on Dumbledore's beard and shook his head. Oh, this was great and more fun than he'd had in a long time.
