Chapter 20
“What did you need to discuss with me, Albus?” Remus asked after taking a seat in front of the Headmaster’s desk at the school. Since Albus had summoned him, saying it was important, it had him curious.
“It’s my hope you can think of something we can’t when it comes to the area of communicating with Sirius,” Albus told him, leaning back in his chair with a soft groan. Stretched thin and tired, plenty kept pulling him in all kinds of directions which made dealing with so much hard. Despite what he hoped, they had come up with nothing they could use to contact Sirius. He was now hoping Remus might know something which could help.
“I don’t know of anything,” Remus told him sadly with a shake of his head. “We’ve ruled out the most common and have no way I know of to tweak the uncommon.”
“We, too, have run though all we know. Filius is still looking, but isn’t hopeful he can find anything,” Albus admitted with a sigh and shake of this head. “My thought was, and Minerva agreed, there might be something the four of you created while in school we can tweak slightly. While we knew about some of what you did, I’m equally as certain we didn’t know about everything. Is there something we can either recreate in some way or use in another? I know this is a long shot, but we’re out of options we can come up with.”
“Let me think,” Remus told him, brow drawn down as he tried to wrack his brain about some of what they did so long ago. Most, like the map, were out as they wouldn’t be at all helpful. After thinking it over, his eyes widened then he said, “I might have something. In fact, Sirius and Harry have them.”
“What is it?” Albus asked, now intrigued. If Remus had something, they could probably recreate it with some help, especially if Remus still knew how to do the basics.
“It’s a communication mirror James and Sirius made for when they were in separate detentions. I still have mine, in fact. While it didn’t do the same things theirs did, as I wasn’t the sort to need it, you can tweak it to do the same. Mine should still be keyed into theirs, but may need some of the charms refreshed so it functions right.”
This was good and Albus thought they could use it. “Please, if you would, find it and bring it to me. We’ll work on refreshing the charms and anything else we need to tend to so it’s compatible.”
“I’ll go home and find it, though it may take some time,” Remus nodded. Then he added, shaking his head, “This will end up quite risky, Albus. Anyone can overhear the conversation. If You-Know-Who is watching them, this will alert him. What may come of it—I shudder to think. While what we found says they can’t hurt each other, I’m sure it’ll make their life quite rough for some time.”
“While you’re right, we might be able to tweak it slightly so he can’t overhear. It may look odd for Sirius or Harry to talk to a mirror and they can’t chance sending a message out, us managing to send one to them might be worth the risk,” Albus said after a few moments of thought. “The heads up we can give Sirius will only help him and will allow us to pass along information he desperately needs and can use. If he can implement it, it will aid the rest of us immeasurably. I think it’s worth the risk, don’t you?”
Remus thought it over, hard, then gave a slow nod, “You’re right, yes. Let me go find the mirror. It may take time as I’m not sure where all my belongings from school are. Then I’ll return. Not sure how long it’ll take to not only refresh the charms, as I’m not certain what all they did, but add what you need.”
“As long as we can start, we’ll be fine,” Albus told him, pleased. He then summoned a quill and parchment before saying, “Tell me what you remember is on the mirror to start with. Once we have it, then we can probably figure out the rest and what we can add.”
“Let me go find it,” Remus said after he finished walking through Albus through all he knew then stood, feeling a tad better that they may have a way to get information to Sirius and learn what he knew on so much. It would help all of them.
With a distracted nod as he read through the notes he took, Albus told him, “Please hurry. I’ll have Filius help. He could not only refresh what is on it, but know what you might not remember. Then he can probably add what we need.”
“I’ll return as fast as I can,” Remus assured him then hurried out. While he hoped this wouldn’t put Sirius and Harry in more danger, he knew what a boon it could end up for them to at least get one message out.
As he looked through the notes, Albus nodded. This was good. Yes, it might work. After checking the time, he stood with a groan then went to find Filius. The man didn’t have a class now, so he might be able to at least start with what he had. Then they would go from there.
As he read through the research Severus brought him, Tom relaxed in his comfortable office chair, leaning back, legs crossed. While Harry and Sirius were both still sleeping, the good feelings from the day before lingered, making him smile just a tad as he read. Though sure this was part and parcel to the bond, he would admit to himself he liked it. They weren’t something he had experienced before in his long life and found he enjoyed them. Since his pursuits had been more in the areas of intellectual or power, he had never considered a close attachment to another person. This wasn’t what he wanted or envisioned for himself, but planned to enjoy it as there was no undoing what the Malfoy spawn had perpetrated.
While he read, he used a voice activated quill to jot down notes on some parchment, nodding at what was here. Though this didn’t cover everything when it came to the bond as, it appeared, there wasn’t much out there and some stated that plainly, it was more than they had found thus far.
Of course, the part with Sirius being the dominant partner was there, something he wasn’t about to pass along, but there was more. It mentioned emotional connections and the bond pulling them together then forcing them to work out issues or problems. He thought that might relate to the pull he felt in many ways and how it felt good to please them. There were parts which talked about how emotions would affect the others in the bond. The good feelings he experienced the last few days and how they felt with Harry’s depression shored this up for him, telling him it was correct.
The next part talked about protection instincts and how they would do what it took to ‘save’ one of those in the bond if they were in danger. It wasn’t something they dealt with yet, but gave him fair warning it might be coming. Then it covered the consummation.
If what he read here was correct, the ethereal state they initially were in and the sex wasn’t the true consummation of the bond, just a partial tie which couldn’t be broken. It would complete when they did the deed the first time after that state. It also said there would end up a strong pull and drive to do so. So far the pull hadn’t manifested for himself. From what he knew of Sirius and Harry, it hadn’t in them either. This told him it was coming. While there was no mention of a bondmark or anything like that, it didn’t mean one wasn’t coming either. He would look into it, but didn’t fancy his chances of finding anything on the topic.
The rest wasn’t anything important, just various areas about the general parts of normal bonds. Though it did say it would end up more pronounced than most and have a tighter tie, they were areas he expected.
Once he finished his notes, he glanced through the papers again to see if there was anything he missed then tossed them on the desk, pleased. While it wasn’t a complete overview of everything which would come, there was enough there to give him a foundation to work with and at least some to expect. It also explained other parts. While it didn’t clarify everything, such as him talking about areas he planned to keep to himself, he assumed it was part of the role when it came to Sirius. It was a theory he would test out with Harry when the youngest of them was in better shape.
After pondering what was there, he nodded, fully planning to gather the books listed as sources then read them to see if there was anything Severus and Albus missed. If not, they at least had more information now than they did before. It would also give them some kind of foreshadowing.
With a groan, he sat up and scooted closer to his desk. Once he took a bracing sip of tea, he grabbed some spare parchment then pulled the mass of papers over. He would now recopy most of it and hand it over to Sirius so the man could go over it with Harry. Oh, he would leave parts out that he didn’t want Sirius to know, but would give him the basics. While it was probably coming when it came to Sirius learning his role in the bond, he wanted to hold it off as long as he could to see if he could find some wiggle room or a way to partially negate it. No matter what, keeping Sirius in the dark as long as he could was a must. It would buy him plenty of time to get some areas into place and protect himself from the worst before it ended up revealed. At this juncture, that’s all he was pressing for.
A smile still in place, feeling good, he worked on copying and pasting paragraphs, using a spell to change the handwriting to his. He would just stay diligent to ensure nothing he didn’t want revealed was put in then would go from there.
While Albus looked over the mirror Remus brought and the list of spells he managed to not only remember but they could glean from the readings, he gave a pleased nod. Though they might only have one shot at using the mirrors to contact Sirius, unless they could find a way to hide the conversation, it would end up enough to pass along what they needed. If they could find a way to hide areas, something Filius thought he could manage, it would give them a means to stay in contact with Sirius, something even better.
After putting the list down on the desk, he leaned back and hummed to himself, thumbs twiddling. Yes, this was good. Very good. It could most assuredly help them. However, his mind slipped to the bigger picture.
Despite what Severus mentioned the other night, he knew even if the three were to die it wouldn’t prevent Tom from coming back. Harry and Sirius would stay gone, of course, but the bond would break and Tom could return. No, they didn’t need that. What he needed was a way for Harry to fulfill the Prophecy. He was certain this couldn’t end until the two faced each other. Only Harry could end this war. There was also the issue of the other Horcruxes to tend to.
He would do nothing in the way of a major move against Tom until he was certain the Horcruxes were gone. So, he now had to find a way to stop Tom, and his plans, until he could figure out a way to break the bond. If it came down to it, Harry could die then come back. The bond with Tom would be broken and he could end the war before it became like the last one. Sirius—he was sure Sirius would survive if Harry died. While he’d have to disable Sirius in some way if it came down to a fight with Harry and Tom, he could manage. Until then, they needed to take Tom out of the equation.
For now, his plan involved Sirius knowing his role and stopping Tom. Which meant, they needed to get at least one very detailed message to him. While he wanted to try for more, even one could do the trick. Then he would step up the hunt for the Horcruxes. Nagini—she would be last, aside from Harry. Once it was all in place, he would then plan out the rest.
Now knowing what he had to do, Albus straightened up then began to summon books. While Filius would help, he would also look into the matter. Yes, Sirius came first. He would then start to plan for the rest. While he had a line on two of the Horcruxes, he needed to find the others. Until then, he needed Sirius to put a leash on Tom. It would buy him the time he needed to sort out the rest. In the end, he would find a way.
As he and Harry ate breakfast in the kitchen, Sirius read over what Tom came up with while Harry did the same over his shoulder. Though it was good to finally have more information and understand a tad more of what they were dealing with, he gave an internal sigh at what was there. By now he knew they were all stuck and there was nothing that could change it, this just shored it up more, though he liked the foreshadowing and understanding it gave. It also imparted some areas they hadn’t experienced yet so they knew they were probably coming.
When he finished reading, he handed it over to Harry so he could read it through it better then said, “Well, we have more information.” He then left it at that as there really wasn’t much more he could say about it.
“We do,” Tom nodded. “I have the list of source books from the person who put it together for me, so I’ll procure them and see if there is more. It might give me other places to look. Though it’s doubtful we’ll find out much more on the topic. From what’s there, it seems this just doesn’t happen much and hasn’t been studied. Let’s see what I can find.”
Brow drawn down as he read the research more thoroughly, Harry gave an internal sigh at what it said. Like he knew; they would be stuck together for the rest of their lives. However, he did like how it explained some parts better. Since he didn’t know what the other two did on such topics, he quietly began to ask questions about some of it, wanting to understand.
Sirius leaned over and pointed to the passages Harry was asking about then explained them the best he could, relating them to what they were experiencing. Tom, too, explained a tad.
Now understanding some of it better, Harry nodded then sighed, shaking his head. However, he did add very quietly, “I’ve not felt anything with the consummation part.”
“Me either,” Sirius told him, giving Harry a squeeze.
“Nor I,” Tom agreed. “It will probably come after other parts sort themselves out.”
Even thinking about a repeat of that—whatever happened made Harry flush slightly then shake his head. While he didn’t say anything, the visions of the act ran through his mind again. While he wanted to and thought about it, he didn’t think he could do it again. He sure wouldn’t ever admit to wanting to either!
“Nothing to worry or stress about,” Sirius assured Harry, giving him a squeeze. He assumed the problem was with the sexual end and was causing stress. “Until it presents itself, we don’t worry about that end and deal with the rest.” Then he made a mental note to talk with Harry about sex, doing the standards since he doubted anyone had bothered before and Hogwarts didn’t cover that matter. Since they knew it was coming, he figured it was best for him to at least broach the topic and make Harry more comfortable with it.
“We can keep this then?” Sirius then asked Tom, gesturing to the paper Harry was still holding.
“It’s your copy, yes,” Tom nodded, going no further than that.
“Good,” Sirius said, planning to go through it more thoroughly later on to see if he missed anything or could figure parts out. Well, and the two of them could talk it out without Tom being around.
With a sigh, he then asked, “Anything we need to know? And do you have any information about what they’re going to do about Wormtail, like a sentence?” He didn’t care, honestly, but was curious. His thought process was Peter deserved whatever the Ministry would do to him, even if it was the ultimate.
“I’ve not as they are still sorting out the matter,” Tom told him honestly. “Give me a few days and I’ll know which way the wind is blowing then fill you in.” What he didn’t add was he planned to have some press for the rat to end up Kissed. While he deserved it, he also didn’t want anyone poking around too much there. He was certain he had everything Oblivated to where they couldn’t bring the memories back, no matter what they did, but didn’t want to chance it.
“Just let me know,” Sirius nodded, though assumed part would come out in the paper as it played out.
“I will,” Tom agreed. After finishing the last of his tea, still not understanding why the two liked the kitchen over the very nice dining room, he then stood and said, “If you need anything else, send an elf.” Then he swept out, planning to tend to the many areas he had in the works.
“Arse,” Sirius muttered without any heat then nudged Harry. “What do you want to do today? It’s nice, so we’ll do some flying and play other games, but is there something you’d like to do?”
After putting the paper down on the table and shoving it aside, Harry thought it over, once more trying to distract himself from the thoughts of that—whatever after the bomb. Once he thought it over, he said, “Let’s explore the house. We’ve not done that other than a few areas we’ve seen. Not sure what is where and I’d like to know.”
“We can do that,” Sirius grinned with a nod. “Grab Nagini and she can give us a guided tour. I’ve figured out a few when I went to talk to Tom the other day, but there’s plenty we’ve not seen. This should end up fun and we can find plenty to get into.” He then leaned closer and chuckled before nudging Harry, adding, “And see how much trouble we can get into. Yeah, this is good.”
Harry grinned at what Sirius said and nodded. With what they had seen so far, there were probably plenty of interesting areas around they’d like to explore.
“Right, let’s finish and see what we can find,” Sirius told him, tucking back into his meal.
Tucking in himself, Harry began to ask what Sirius had seen around that he hadn’t, interested in hearing Sirius’ observations.
“Filius is working on the mirror Remus gave us,” Albus told Minerva and Severus, looking between them. It was after the students were in the dorm for the night, so they could finally have a meeting about what he planned to do. “Remus gave him a list of what he could remember when it came to the spells. He’ll take it from there then try to add what I asked for. However, I need the both of you to take on part of the project for me.”
“What do you need from us?” Minerva asked, willing to help all she could, but she didn’t think the two of them could assist Filius much with the spells.
After passing over copies of the research on the bomb and what they now knew, he said, “I need the two of you to come up with a very concise, detailed explanation of all Sirius needs to know from not only the research, but what else is going on. We don’t know how much time Remus will have to impart what we need, so we need it done the best we can within a minimal amount of time. I’m helping with other areas with this and need to farm out part of it. My thought was the two of you could put it together best.”
“Easily done,” Severus nodded, looking determined.
“We’ll hammer it out,” Minerva assured him, glancing at what was there.
“If you feel he needs to know, put it in there,” Albus told the two, looking between them. “We may only have one shot at this and need to cover everything. If we can manage more, it’ll be better, but we can’t count on it.”
“Lupin is taking it on?” Severus asked, already starting to calculate what they needed to do and how to put it in a form which could end up delivered quickly. The top of the list when it came to priority was making Black aware he was the dominant. That came before anything else and needed out there as clear as they could manage.
“We thought it best since his mirror is keyed into the ones both Sirius and Harry have,” Albus nodded. “He knows just how to work them and knows what they can do as well. We aren’t sure if we could key anyone else in and make it show on the ones the two have.”
“Understood,” Severus nodded. This plan pleased him. At least they had a shot.
“I’ll leave it to you both to prioritize what is there and leave the parts which are the least important for last as they won’t end up necessary if he can’t talk long.”
“How long do we have?” Minerva asked, planning to start that night and get done what they could.
“That I don’t know,” Albus admitted with a shake of his head. “We have, at the barest minimum, twenty-four hours. I say we shoot for that goal then go from there. This is an undue burden, this I know, but we need it fast and you’re the two I know can put it together while the rest of us work with other parts.”
“You can count on us,” Severus assured him after Minerva did the same. Oh yes, they would, as Black could give them an advantage they couldn’t get any other way. For him to manage, he needed what they knew.
“Good,” Albus nodded then walked them through what he thought were the most important parts. The two would word it in such a way that Remus could deliver it fast. What he was counting on. Then they would just hope. All they could do.
