Chapter 19
When Sirius sat down at the table for lunch, Remus couldn’t help but smile and chuckle a tad. The grin Sirius had come home with was still on his face. This wasn’t the normal kind of expression, the one you used for everyone, but a genuine one which he hadn’t seen since school. And it probably had to do with Hank, but couldn’t be sure. Well, he was as sure as one could get without asking Sirius. Since his old friend hadn’t come home until long after brekky this morning, he assumed he had a great night, though didn’t want details. He would let it go and enjoy his old friend’s great mood.
After a sip of his coffee, Sirius asked, mind still on the night before and brekky that morning with Hank, “Anything I need to know about?” If Remus had mentioned something, he probably wouldn’t have noticed, so he would ask and hope to retain it.
“No, nothing,” Remus told him with a small smile. “Albus is working on something or other, he didn’t say what. The rest are just pressing on. Nothing for us to worry about.”
Sirius nodded, pleased he didn’t have to concern himself with anything. However, it jogged something else. Summoning the book Hank gave him, he then tossed it to Remus. Pointing to it, he said, “Where it’s bookmarked, is a spell to detect a Horcrux. He needs such things for his work. Not sure how much help it’ll be, but we have it.”
Not bothering to look at the spell, Remus gave a pleased nod. “I’ll send this to Albus this afternoon. He’ll be quite pleased, I’m sure.”
“I thought so,” Sirius agreed. Leaning back, he sighed softly, smiling once more. Since no one was around, he said, “I want to see if we can manage to have one night a week where we arrange it to where no one comes over. Sunday would be perfect.”
“Honestly? I would like that as well. Tonks would like to spend time here with me without worrying who would be around,” Remus told Sirius truthfully. Giving a tiny smile, he guessed, “And you would like to bring Hank around, I gather?”
“That’s the idea,” Sirius nodded. “I liked last night and not having to worry about so much. Rather than do it all at his place, I would like him to come over here as well. While I understand emergencies and tending to those, we don’t need people just coming and going for no reason like happens now. Don’t want to be mean about it, but I think the time has come to stop some of it.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” Remus told him with a vigorous nod. “Rather than you take it on, let me. I’ll go talk to Albus later when I take him the book. Let me see what I can manage. I won’t say why, of course, but that it’s getting old.”
“Yeah, it’s better that you take it on. You have a gentler touch that I do,” Sirius snickered, sipping his drink.
“My thought on the matter,” Remus chuckled. Then, sobering up, he asked, “Is there a reason for this? I mean, from what you said, it was just a case of having some fun. Has that thought changed?”
Brow drawn down, Sirius leaned back in his chair and thought it over. It didn’t take long for him to come up with an answer. “It has,” he admitted, shifting around in his chair. With a sigh, he told his old friend, “I want to see where this goes. Hank is fascinating and I like him, a lot. Not that I’m going to turn down the physical part, but I want more.”
After taking that in, Remus gave a slow nod, a smile on his face, “I can understand. You both have gone out more than pushed for whatever, at least that I have heard.”
“We have,” Sirius nodded. “What we’ve done is getting to know each other. I want it to continue. This would be a good way.” Then he admitted, with a bit of a grin, “I thought you and Tonks could join us here and there, like a double date. Not sure how Hank will feel about it, but it would make it fun.”
“And I can assure you we would feel the same way,” Remus replied, smile growing. “We would love to double date with you two. While Hank can be intimidating, I don’t feel anything bad about him. He just has that hard exterior. I don’t think you would be continuing to go out with him if it stayed on all the time.”
“It doesn’t,” Sirius assured him. “He’s just—odd, nothing more. When you see one of his real smiles you’ll understand there is more to him than what he shows most everyone.”
“Yes, I think we need to come up with something. I’ll say something to Albus then we’ll go from there. He can put the word out. It’s far past time that the only thing our lives revolve around is the war. It’s important, yes, but there is more out there. Others have a personal life and it’s time you do as well, Padfoot.”
“I agree,” Sirius nodded. With a smile, he said, “And I’m enjoying having one, more than I thought I would.”
“You should. We’ll find a way to ensure you have the time to explore it,” Remus smiled. Yes, this pleased him. He never thought Sirius would find a person he wanted more than one thing from. Now that he had, Remus would help him all he could to continue on and have time for it. Only good could come of this.
As he stepped into Minerva's front entryway, Severus felt tense. All he knew was she wanted to talk to him privately, just not the topic she wanted to discuss. Trying to remain calm, though highly curious, he glanced around. “I don’t believe I’ve ever been to your home,” he told her, trying to break the ice.
“You haven’t,” Minerva told him with a small smile, motioning him to follow. Leading him towards her parlor, she said, “We’ve been too worried about someone seeing you.”
Once in the room, she motioned for him to take a seat. When he did, she seated herself then summoned the tea she already made. When it came in, she poured him a cup then passed it to him. Leaning back with her own cup, she said, “I want your word that what I say to you goes no further, especially not to Albus.”
“My word,” Severus told her, slightly startled. However, he was now more curious than ever. Putting his teacup down on the small table by his chair he then crossed his legs, leaning back. “What is the topic you wanted to discuss with me? You didn’t say.” Then he waited.
After a sip of her tea, Minerva set her cup aside then leaned back, looking at Severus. “I’m having issues with the way Albus is going about many things.”
Though slightly stunned, Severus nodded and waited for her to continue on. He wanted to hear her out before he revealed some of what he knew.
“Specifically, I’m concerned about the Harry Potter issue.” She told him, then stopped.
“What about the issue?” Severus inquired. “It’s a broad topic.”
“The looking for him,” Minerva answered. With a sigh and shake of her head, she explained, “He created this issue and I think he needs to keep his fingers out it. I also think he should leave it alone. Harry Potter doesn’t exist anymore from what all of us can tell.”
“Agreed,” Severus nodded. Then he waited again, not wanting to jump in just yet, though this sounded highly promising and help they could most assuredly use.
“We can only guess what happened, but the Dursleys know where he is,” she stated. “I agree there should be some effort to find him, more to warn him what might come. Albus, though—he says he wants to offer him protection, but my feeling is he wants to draw him back to toss him into the war. That—no, he needs to leave it alone.”
For the first time, Severus decided to do more than just wait. “I agree,” he said gruffly, crossing his arms over his chest. “We can’t allow the person who caused the problems to help fix it. If Mr. Potter, or whatever his name is now, gets wind of Albus being the one who helped cause the issue, he won’t end up amiable to us stepping in to assist him.”
“Oh yes,” Minerva nodded, a grim look on her face. Shaking her head, she said, “My thought was you and I do something to find out what really happened. Between the two of us, we can find a spell to cast on the Dursleys so we learn the truth of what actually occurred. Once we know, we go from there.”
Liking what he was hearing, Severus nodded. “Good plan. Do you think others should end up involved? We can’t do this alone, Minerva.” He thought this is where he could reveal what he and the others were doing.
Without hesitation, Minerva told him, “We will need help. However, we need to stay cautious of who we ask. The ones we know who are loyal completely and would say something to him we need to avoid. Others—the ones who are highly disgruntled or angry over so much we might want to consider. Remus and Sirius, though you don’t get along with them, are two we might want to approach.”
After hearing her out, Severus leaned forward, elbows on his knees, then looked at her. “There is already a group doing what you talked about. I belong to it as does Black, Lupin, Bill Weasley, Fred, and George. We’re doing our best to find Mr. Potter so Black can go talk to him. The lad needs to keep himself safe. There is no intention of trying to talk him into coming back to help.”
Eyes slightly wider than normal as she listened, Minerva then began to nod. “If all of you would have me, I would like to join as well.”
“We would be happy to have you, I assure you,” Severus told her with a small smile. Most people he would stay cautious of, wondering if they weren’t doing so at the behest of Albus, but he knew Minerva too well to even think such a thing.
“Good,” Minerva told him with a smile, relaxing in her chair. I’ll help all I can.”
“I’ll talk to the rest and we can set up a meeting so we can fill you in on what we’re doing,” Severus told her, happy for the unexpected help. Minerva could do them plenty of good.
“Do that and I’ll see what I can bring to the table,” Minerva nodded. She then added, “I think we also need to see what we can come up with to help. Albus—I don’t think this time around he can come up with much more. He’s been so focused on other areas that his effectiveness is not there. And he’s not open to listening to the rest of us when it comes to suggestions. If we can come up with a complete plan for something to help us, he might listen.”
“I agree,” Severus nodded, liking what he was hearing. Yes, Minerva would make a wonderful addition to what they were doing.
Hank was doing something odd for him; just relaxing instead of being up and working. Hovering about three feet above his bed he was stretched out, head hanging down like it would if you hung it off the edge of the bed, with a small smile on his face. As he hovered there, using a spell he created which was a modification of one of the first levitation spells he learned, he thought over the night before. While the position seemed on and levitating more so, it was very comfortable and seemed to help him think better for some reason.
Never in his life had he had an encounter as satisfying as the one he had with Sirius. Normally, he just did the wham, bam, thank you sort of thing. This though—it was better. Though not sure why, he thought, maybe, it had to do with connecting with Sirius in a way he hadn’t with anyone else. They spent time before the encounter getting to know each other. It made it better.
Shifting slightly, though not much as he didn’t want to tense up and ruin the mood, he thought it over more deeply. First thing that came to mind was he wanted more. Well, of course, he wanted the sexual part, but he also wanted the other. He wanted to keep getting to know Sirius and let him further into his life. Where it would lead, he didn’t know, but wanted to find out.
Deep down, he realized he wanted a relationship of sorts with Sirius. Truthfully, he wanted the sort of relationship he never had before; something permanent in some way, be it ‘going together’, or something similar. However, despite his confidence in so much, he didn’t know how to express that to Sirius. Hell, he hadn’t done so before and wouldn’t know where to start. Maybe, though, he wouldn’t have to. If it continued on like it was, it might just lead there. Either that or Sirius might say something. That would be easier on him.
Opening his eyes, he just looked around his room. He decided that he wanted Sirius to visit more often. While not sure about Grimmauld Place since it was Order headquarters, he was fine with Sirius coming here all the time.
With a smile, he shut his eyes again and sighed contentedly. While he had tons to do like he did most days, he wanted to relax and relish in the feelings for a while. What he did have to do today could be done in his own time and there was no rush for it. He didn’t even have appointments to tend to, so he wouldn’t have to worry about that. Yes, maybe today he would just relax and work at a leisurely pace rather than dive in like he always did.
After shutting his eyes again, the smile not leaving his face, he lowered himself back down to the bed. There he sprawled on the bed and decided to go back to sleep for a time. Once he woke up he would deal with whatever. A contented sigh leaving his lips, he shifted around and lay there.
A.N.--yes this is a shorter chapter than normal, but it’s a buildup I need.
Now to explain what’s going on with the author…
Since June I’ve had two surgeries. One not major, just a lumpectomy (it was high risk benign, not cancer), but the other was. That one was on the 7th and I’m still recovering from it. It took me almost a year to jump through all the hoops for that one. The worst was quitting smoking. I managed, but between that and other things going on since, my focus has been on my health and all I’ve had to do.
I promise all those following me that all the stories are not abandoned; I’ve just had lots on my mind and to do. I’m trying to get back on schedule and update more, but it’s taking time.
Thanks for your patience!
