The next day, Albus and Scorpius woke up late in the morning. Still tired from the events of the previous night, they wrestled themselves out of bed and dressed in relative silence. “Breakfast?” Scorpius asked as he rubbed his eyes.
“Yeah.” Albus answered groggily.
Hand in hand the two boys walked down stairs to the informal dining room. Just as they were about to enter, Scorpius restrained Albus. “Listen Alby.” He said brining a finger up to his lips to signify silence. Albus craned his head to hear the conversation going on the next room.
“The Lemasters boy will be released on the first of next year. He will be expelled but nothing more.” Spoke a voice the Albus instantly recognized as his father’s.
“Even after killing Amanda and raping my son? He goes free?” Asked the voice of Astoria in a quick hushed tone.
“I’m sorry Astoria. He said he was under the influence of the imperius curse.”
“Naturally.” Draco said with a scow.
“Do you think it is possible Draco?” She asked.
“Of course its possible, but far more likely that the boy used it as an excuse to avoid Azkaban.” Draco was all too familiar with the scenario; Lucius Malfoy had given the same excuse following the first war.
“I agree.” Harry responded. “Do you know if the Lemasters were involved in the second war?”
“Are you asking if they were deatheaters?” Draco asked darkly.
“Obviously.” Harry responded shortly.
Draco was silent for long while as he prepared his answer. “Near the end of the war, when it seemed the Dark Lord would be victories’, many lesser known pure-blood families joined our ranks. The Lemasters family had diluted their blood. They wanted to be accepted back into the fold.”
“Diluted their blood?” Harry responded sounding sickened.
“Yes Potter. It’s not my terminology. When purebloods marry anything less than another pureblood, the family becomes diluted. Even if the child is born of a pureblood and a halfblood many families will still consider it to be a half-blood.” Draco answered sounding somewhat sickened himself. “The Lemasters wanted to reclaim their place among the so called Sacred Pureblood families. They became deatheaters in order to do so.”
“And did they succeed?”
“I think that they would like to think so.” Draco said with a faked calmness. “They were loyal to the end, even if they had only arrived during the final act.”
“Mr. Potter I am glad to have you as a guest, but I must ask why you are really here. Well besides to take your son home that is.” Astoria asked with a kind type of sincere curiosity. Albus could tell that she had decided to pose the question before Draco had the chance.
“Harry, just call me Harry.” The man responded. “You’re right, I’m not here for your husband to explain ancient pureblood ideology to me.”
“Then why Potter?” Draco hissed. “Surely you don’t want us to join forces in an attempt to straighten out our sons.”
Harry chose to ignore the statement. “You know as well as I do that it has been too long since your old friends have made any attacks. I want to know if you have heard of any uprisings.”
“I have feared much the same.” Draco admitted, his tone becoming uncharacteristically sincere. “However, I deal mostly with your lot these days. I have no allies among the old families, nor do I want them.”
“So you really have come to light side?” Harry asked somewhat amazed.
“No.” Draco replied firmly. “I have come to the side of my wife and children. Make no mistake Potter, I have loyalty to no other.”
“You would do anything to keep them safe?”
“Of course.”
“Then help me stop the next uprising before it starts.” Harry said quietly.
“Why don’t you have Weasley help you?”
“I need someone who knows dark magic.”
“Why do you think I would help you?”
“Because we have to most to lose.” Harry answered. “Our children will be their first target. Try to tell me you don’t know it’s true.”
“I can’t.” Draco said, his had reaching for his wife.
“I’m most afraid for Albus and Scorpius. They are the bullseye. Think about it, a Malfoy and a Potter together as lovers.”
At this Astoria gasped. “What should we do?” She asked frantically. “I won’t lose my son to those monsters!”
“Calm down Astoria dear.” Draco said. “Potter, how do you even know there will be another uprising?”
“The Lemasters boy told me.” Harry said seriously. “That night I left Albus with you at the hospital I went to the ministry to interrogate him.”
“And how do you know he was not lying to you?”
“Veritaserum.”
Draco laughed. “You mean to tell me that you used veritaserum on that boy? That can’t be legal.”
“It’s not.” Harry admitted shamelessly. “But after all these years of chasing down dark wizards, my intuition has never failed me.”
“What did he tell you, Harry?” Astoria asked.
“He told me that his father had sent him to kill your son anyway he wanted. That he would be the first blood traitor to die.” Harry answered seriously.
“What do you need me to do?” Draco asked just as seriously.
“Help me into the underground. I need to go undercover.”
“Underground, Potter? There are no neo-deatheaters in the underground, they are all in plain sight.” Draco said knowingly. “I have an idea.”
“What?”
“Tell the world that I’m a wanted man.”
“Draco no!” Astoria cried.
“Father!” Scorpius shouted as he ran into the room and flung himself at Draco. “Please no! I can protect myself!”
“You are too young to understand. I need to do this.”
Albus walked into the room slowly. His eyes met his fathers. He saw resolve there. He trusted his father. If Harry believed there was a danger great enough to put his or Draco Malfoy’s life at risk, Albus knew that something must be seriously wrong.
“Scor.” Albus said as he reached for his boyfriend. “They have to do this.”
“No Albus!” Scorpius shouted at him. “Everyone thinks they need to protect me!”
“It’s not just for us, Scor.”
Scorpius looked each of them furiously before storming out the door and back to his room. Albus began to follow him, but a hand grabbed him around the wrist.
“Albus. When break is over, and you are both back in school, promise that you will protect my son.” Draco asked him with pleading eyes. “He is too kind, and too gentle, like his mother. He won’t hurt the people that come after him.”
“I promise.” Albus said simply. “I love him.”
