This one is a little short. Sorry for lleaving you guessing about Harry's whereabouts. Anyway, I hope you'll like it. I miss your reviews. Please read and let me now what you think.
Severus stood by the door of an old-fangled Baroque style mansion deciding if he really wanted to proceed with his plan, memories associated with this place running through his mind. He almost turned back, but thinking better of it let out a deep sigh and rang the bell. An aged female elf opened the door. She gazed at him in disbelief before greeting him with a wide smile. – “Master Severus. I can’t believe it is really you.” She reached both of her hands out to him “It’s been so long. I thought I’d never see you again.” He smiled warmly at her and kneeled to be taken into a tight embrace. – “Hello Mitsy. I’ve missed you too. I didn’t know if you’d still be here.” – “My boy” elf sobbed out “How could I ever leave this place? My best memories are connected to it. I still remember holding you in my arms for the first time. I hoped you’d come back here someday.” Severus felt a tear running down his cheek – “I couldn’t come back earlier. I’ve been… I…” he couldn’t bring himself to tell her what was going on in his life since he left this place.
- “No need to explain” she whispered, carefully letting him go from her arms. “I know everything. We’ve been reading newspapers.” She stroked his cheek with her little hand “I never believed a single word they said” – “Thank you.” He gave her a wry smile – “Is my grandmother home?” – “She’s in her study” – “Is she still angry with me?” – “She misses you dearly” – “Will she come down to meet me?” – “I’m afraid it has gotten hard for her to move around like she used to before. Why won’t you go upstairs and greet her. She’ll be happy to see you” – “What about you?” – “I’ll go and have Loki prepare lunch for both of you. I’ll see you later, my boy.” Severus nodded and walked upstairs to a beautiful study room decorated with familiar antique furniture. Portraits of his ancestors gazed down at him from their heavy frames. Severus gave each of them a courtly nod before proceeding further. He stopped in front of a massive throne looking chair and kneeled in front of an old women sitting in it.
Even at her age, she still possessed the beauty that remained from her younger years. There was no doubt that she belonged to a noble pure blood family. Her silver locks were styled into a classy up-do, from which several curls escaped and were now laying playfully on her neck. Her head was resting on the back of the chair and held in place gracefully by the tips of her fingers. Her eyes that were closed now, were so piercing, that they inspired not only respect, but fear on those whom she was fixing them. Her voice, though having some womanly softness to it, was loud and almost rough at times, so when she spoke it was always heard a long way off.
She was perceptive, quick-witted and incredibly intelligent. Skilled in five languages, she was able to not merely understand, but speak all of them fluently – English, Latin, French, Spanish and Italian. Besides her obvious talent in languages, she also practiced music, playing especially on the clavichord (a small rectangular keyboard instrument resembling muggle piano, producing a soft sound by means of metal blades attached to the ends of key levers that gently press the strings, popular in royal families from 15th to early 19th centuries) and on the lute so excellently that, when intent on it, she surprised the best performers, both by the rapidity of her hand and by her style of playing.
She was also one of a few registered Animagi, which she used in her younger years to ensure protection for her own family and respect of other pure blood families. At the age of eighteen, she was not only one of the youngest, but most respectful members of the Wizengamot. Her Father, who was one of the founders of today’s wizarding high court of law, which was called the Wizard’s Council since medieval days, was one of the strongest wizards of his time, skillful in both regular and dark magic.
He took one of her hands into his own and placed a gentle kiss on her fingers. Dark beautiful eyes, much like his own, flew open and gazed deeply at him. – “May I help you” she asked, not recognizing the man in front of her – “The years have been kind to you, Elizabeth. You’re as beautiful as I remember you to be when I was a young boy. She gasped recognizing his voice and placed one of her hands on her chest to calm her pounding heart. – “Oh my God. Severus, is it really you?” – “Yes Elizabeth, it is me.” She cupped his face with both hands – “My boy. My dear boy is back. God only knows how many times I’ve prayed for your return.” She threw her hands around his neck and pulled him into a loving embrace. Few long moments passed before she could let him go.
- “It’s been so long. Sit, I want you to tell me everything.” She made a welcoming gesture with her hand, showing to the armchair by her side. Severus obliged and met her gaze with a stoic smile. Years of working as a double agent, taught him to withstand even the most intimidating stares. After a few moments, she spoke again “You haven’t changed yourself, just as quiet and reticent as you were before”- “I don’t know if there is much to tell. Mitsy said you were following the newspapers” – “Yes” she said shaking her head “I never believed those lies. I knew that sooner or later you would find your way. I hoped I’d see you on your mother’s funeral, but I also understood that it must have been hard for you, so I decided to give you your space.” – “I couldn’t find it in myself to go there. Her last words to me were the ones of loathe and despise. She hated me for what I’ve done and I simply couldn’t bring myself to go. I have visited her grave a few times over the years. I know I should’ve been more attentive, but…” – “You don’t have to explain. I understand.”
-“Thank you for your kind words, but I feel there’s a lot of things I have to explain. I just wish I knew where to start.” She gave him a knowing look – “Why won’t you start from the time you left this house. I feel like we have a lot of catching up to do” – “That’s only fair.” They spend the next few hours immersed in the conversation as Severus explained his actions throughout both wizarding wars and the life he chose for himself, finally reaching the point of his visit. – “Are you sure you can trust Lucius this time? I remember him as a spoiled brat who always managed to get you in trouble. Although it shouldn’t have come as a surprise, with that piece of scum he called father” – “Lucius did what he had to, to protect his family. At least he succeeded in it. Wish I could say the same. Lily died because of me. I should have been there to protect her. If I would’ve gotten there a few minutes earlier, I might have…”
- “You might have gotten yourself killed. I remember that girl very well. She was a very talented young witch. Although I never really approved your affection with her. There was just something about her that I couldn’t really put my finger on. I can only imagine how difficult it was for you to deal with her son over the years” – “As hard as it is for me to say, he took the best from both of his parents and grew up to be a good man.” – “Good. I hope I’ll have a chance to meet him someday. And what about that girl you’ve been telling me about? Do you think that she is what you really need?” – “Hermione is the best thing that ever happened to me. I can’t imagine my life without her”- “But what of her age? You said that she was your student” – “She was indeed. The best one I’ve had over the years. She was also the one who made me realize that age was only a number. She loves me just as much as I love her and I intend to make her my wife after this whole thing is over.”
- “That sounds wonderful” Elizabeth said, giving him a warm smile. “I do expect you to bring her here to meet me. Now that you’re back, I won’t let you disappear again” – “I’ll bring her over as soon as I can. I’m sure you’ll like each other. She’s like no one you’ve met before.” – “She saved your life. That alone makes me like her already. It’s so good to see you happy, my boy. I thought I’d never live to see the day.”- “So did I, Elizabeth.” She looked at him with familiar twinkle in her eyes – “I’ll help you with what you’re asking, but I have something I’d like to ask from you in return.” She couldn’t hold a laugh watching one eyebrow go up. – “You’re just like your grandfather, Severus. Always expecting the worst. Don’t worry, what I’m about to ask, won’t be that bad. She watched his face relax before she continued “Unfortunately, your grandfather and I were not blessed with any more children except your mother. When she was still alive, I tried my best to convince her to take her family name so she could inherit everything after my death, but because of your father’s hatred of everything magical, she turned me down. Now that I have you back, I want to make you my heir.”
- “Elizabeth, I don’t think that…” – “No, I want you to understand that I won’t be around forever. I want to make sure that one of the oldest families in wizarding world will not seize to exist and everything that we own will not go for sale at some kind of muggle auction.” She took one of his hands and covered it with both of hers – “You have a title of Lord and an ancestry to be proud of. I want you to take what is rightfully yours. Now, I know that it’s a lot to process in one moment, but I want you to promise that you will at least think about it.” – “I am thankful for your help, Elizabeth and I give you my word that I will think about your proposition.” – “Good. You’re making me happy already.” Severus took one of her hands and placed a quick kiss on it – “I’m afraid I have to go” he said standing up. “Hermione is probably starting to wonder regarding my whereabouts” – “I understand. Don’t forget your promise to bring her over to meet me” – “I won’t. Thank you for everything, Elizabeth. I will see you soon.” She got up to walk him to the door – “I’ll see you soon, my boy.”
Harry got back to the minister’s office and looked at his time piece. It showed 11:45 Shite, he’ll be here soon. Think Harry, think. Suddenly he had an idea. He grabbed a piece of parchment and a quill and composed a quick letter. Opening the window, he summoned one of the ministry owls – “Here, take that to Severus Snape” he said tying the letter to the bird’s leg. Watching the bird fly away he took a deep breath I’m not that amazing at disaparition, but I’ll try anyway. Hope Draco won’t kill me when he finds out. Thinking of the place he was disapparating to, he turned and disappeared with a soft pop.
As the door of his family mansion closed behind him, Severus made a few steps and had to stop as the big snow owl landed on his hand. He untied the letter from the bird’s leg and watched it immediately take off. He opened the letter and took a quick glance at the text Fuck, it’s almost twelve. Let’s hope I won’t be late. He thought of the place where he was going and disappeared with a swish of his robes. He appeared at the Ministry arrival area and looked around. Big clock at the top of the clock tower showed a few minutes till twelve. Come on, Lucius. Where’s your famous punctuality? He thought taking another glance around. A few loud gasps and an exquisite smell of an excessively expensive Clive Christian No. 1 told him about the arrival of the Malfoy senior. Taking the blonde wizard by the hand, he raised one finger to his lips, giving him a sign to stay quiet and disapparated both of them away in a blink of an eye.
- “Merlin’s balls, Severus. What do you think you’re doing?” – “Hello Lucius, it’s nice to see you too. I know exactly what I’m doing, I’m saving your arse from being killed. I thought I told you not to show your face in the Ministry.” – “How else did you expect me to find out if it was a trap or not?” – “Well, it was. Planned by none other than your loving wife.” – “Narcissa? How did you find out?” Severus pulled out the letter and handed it to the blond wizard.
- “Damn Potter and his hero complex. I thought I told you that I didn’t want him to fight my battles.” – “You’ll need to hurry up with your plan, Lucius. We might not have much time.” – “Very well, I’ll have a meeting with the members of the pure blood families and try to find out where their loyalties lay. Most of them are members of the Wizengamot and if I’m successful, I’ll be re-elected as a new Minister of Magic, but I will have to show an undeniable proof that Kingsley is involved in conspiracy to bring back the Dark Lord.” – “You’ll have your proof just as soon as I find Potter.” – “Good. I hope your meeting with Elizabeth, proved to be… productive?” – “Indeed. She is on our side, mine to be exact.” – “I understand. Please let her know that I’m very grateful for her support. I hope I’ll be able to live up to her expectations and justify her confidence.” – “I’ll let her know. What makes you so sure you’ll be able to convince the families to follow you?” – “You’re not the only one with the gift of persuasion, my friend.”- “Very well then. I’m off to see Hermione and Draco. Owl me with the results.” Lucius nodded watching the potion’s master take a few steps towards the fireplace – “Severus. Make sure you find the boy.” – “I will, I give you my word.” With that he was gone.
He stepped into the living room of the Malfoy manor to find Draco, Ginny and Hermione in the middle of what seemed to be an intense debate. His appearance made them jump from their seats – “Severus, thank Gods you’re here” Hermione ran up to him, locking her hands around his waist. “I was worried sick. Where were you?” – “We were all worried, uncle. Harry is late too. He said yesterday that he was going to find out about that contract my father signed with the Minister, but he should’ve been here hours ago. Have you seen him?” Severus placed a quick kiss on the top of Hermione’s head before gently removing himself from her embrace. – “I’m sorry for making all of you worried, but I’m afraid the news that I brought are not particularly good.”
He pulled out Harry’s letter and handed it to Draco. He watched young wizard’s face becoming paler with each moment as the realization of what Harry did for his father dawned on him. – “I can’t believe it. Why? Why would he do that?” Hermione took the letter and gazed at it quickly before giving it to Ginny. Snape watched his godson’s eyes fill up with tears and squeezed his hand reassuringly. – “I promised your father and I promise to you Draco, I will find him.” – “If my father is so concerned about him, why won’t he help?” – “Your father has something else to do that is also very important. You need to trust him.” – “When did that ever proved to be the right thing?” – “Then you should trust me. Have I ever failed you?” – “No” Draco said, wiping the tear from his eye. “But if you’re going to search for Harry, I’m going with you” – “Draco, I think the wisest thing for you would be to stay here I case he returns” – “No. I’m not going to sit here and do nothing. I’m going with you and that’s final.”
- “What about your mother, Draco?” Ginny asked quietly? – “I don’t know Ginny. I still can’t believe that my mother is behind all of this, but I can’t think about it before we find Harry. That’s the most important thing right now.” – “I understand.” Hermione stood up and took her wizard’s hand – “May I talk to you in private?” – “Sure, love” he said letting her guide him to the other room – “What are you not telling me, Severus?” – “Kitten…” – “Don’t you “kitten” me, Severus Snape. I know you well enough to see when you’re not telling me the whole truth. Where have you been all day and what’s going on with Lucius?” – “Lucius is a little… preoccupied at the moment. I’ll tell you about it later. As to your other question, I have visited Elizabeth Prince and before you start worrying yourself with it, she is my grandmother.”
Severus couldn’t hold a smile when one of Hermione’s eyebrows rose up, the gesture so familiar to him, it became his signature. – “You went to pay a visit to your grandmother?” – “Yes I did. Lucius might need her help to go through with his plan” – “I don’t understand” –“I know, love. Let’s focus on finding Potter and then I’ll explain everything.” He placed a loving kiss on her lips – “I need you to trust me right now. Harry is a strong wizard, but I’m afraid we’re wasting time talking when we should be searching for him” – “I understand and I trust you. I also would like to go with you” – “I need you to stay here with your friend. She needs your support and I need to know that both of you are safe” – “What about you? I want to know that you’re safe too” – “I will be, I give you my word” – “But where will you go? He might be anywhere” – “I have a few places in mind, but the faster we start looking, the better chance we have at finding him”-“All right, just be safe” – “I will” he said placing another kiss on her lips and leading her back to the room. – “Are you ready, Draco?” – “I am. My apparation skills might not be the best.” Young wizard said, blush creeping up his cheeks. - “I’ll be able to take both of us.” They put the wards up around the mansion and disapparated away.
