Everyone at Grimmauld place seemed to make it their life mission to make sure unless he was in his room he wouldn’t have any peace. They were truly as far from dark as possible. Harry hated it, there was nothing to push, nothing to influence. He was essentially trapped, powerless in the face of the simple virtues and ample good will of the witches and wizards around him.
It was suffocating.
Remus and Sirius taught him defensive spells; Molly seemed to suspect something was wrong with the twins despite him giving her every valid excuse possible. They were after all his business associates.
Even if they seemed to be developing a habit of apparating into his room.
He hadn’t told them to do it. They just did that on their own. They were his responsibility since he broke them.
Harry found he rather liked waking up to obedient servants.
Fred and George were… apparently good actors. The second to last day before school resumed. Harry just needed something to take the edge off.
The locket was yielding to him. Almost broken, by the time he’d be comfy at Hogwarts it would be subservient.
It still resisted him but it was a tired sluggish resistance. His skill in infiltrating the minds of others was steadily improving as well. The mental siege was about to come to a close.
The final battle between them was coming soon and it would yield if it desired its continued existence. Even the inhabitants of this old place seemed to feel the drop in temperature.
Harry would wager that it would snow before Halloween. The sun finally set and Harry got ready for this night.
He learned a lot by walking in London at night. Magic was just beneath the surface, but it was there. The muggles clinging to their normalcy.
Hedwig finally returned soaring through the opened window with an exhausted hoot. Harry had made sure her cage was perfectly cleaned and the moment he retrieved the letter from her foot. She closed her eyes and slept.
The evening chill washed into his room as he carefully exited his room.
He double checked that his grey jumper was thick as was his jeans, His window locked until he returned and underneath his invisibility cloak he prowled for a couple blocks. Harry’s green eyes making sure he wasn’t being fallowed.
He darted through alleyways. Once and after he’d looked around to make sure no one was around did he softly fold his invisibility cloak into a neat little bundle that couldn’t fall out of his jumper.
His hand never strayed far from his wand holstered at his side and in the darkness of the alleyway. Harry let the mask slip and he felt the darkness keenly.
He groaned appreciatively. Like escaping from clothes that didn’t fit you. Everything felt so intense.
It was euphoric. He changed his hair to that Malfoy blond, if it made draco’s life harder so much the better.
Behind the hustle of the city at night. No city truly slept he was learning that quite well. People were always out and about. Party goers and night revelers strode on the sidewalk.
Especially it seemed like when they should be sleeping.
“Lumos” The tip of his wand flared to light. Harry held his wand as a flashlight.
The familiar feeling of dark arts made his head snap towards the direction of the deeper alleyways. Away from any entrance that opened towards the public street.
“Curious, Curious indeed.” He wanted to visit Markus again. If Hedwig returned it was safe to presume that Barty understood he wanted them close by.
He was tempted to punish Barty for prolonged silence, but Harry remember how skilled he was with his… hands.
They’d both have to cross black flame before Harry was willing to put trust in them. Especially Barty, You could only have one master.
And as far as he knew. Barty had two.
Harry managed to get where he senses the curses and it was empty. Oh there were curse marks, the tell tale signs of magic was here.
The dark arts had been used here. Harry whistled a broken wand was splintered into bits.
Harry mournfully departed before an auror or a hit wizard showed up. That’d be awkward since he wouldn’t be able to explain and the ministry would try to blame him for it.
He spied the familiar street in the distant end of the alleyways that led to the leaky cauldron as he quickly strode as quickly as he dared out of the alleyway.
A rather unpleasant looking fellow unexpectedly turned into the alleyway and spotted him.
There was a long moment as Harry beheld the clearly troubled young man who sized him up and something silvery slipped over the man’s fist.
“Give me your wallet.” The man demanded.
Harry shifted he felt the coiling in his chest. Unlike a lot of wizards Harry knew that muggles were dangerous and likely always would be.
“No.” He’d let this mugger go. There was a click as a knife sprang into view. One of Dudley’s friends had one. Liked waving it around.
Harry’s green eyes glinted in the wand light and he smiled. He could pretend to be just a normal wizard.
“You want it? Just try to take it! Nox “ Harry challenged and then he rounded the corner going the way he came.
He felt so alive in the dark. Every hair on his body and the mugger cursed loudly in the sudden dark. The mugger stumbled after him.
Harry used his offhand to feel the dirty side of the wall of the alley. His emerald eyes adjusted to the dark and he needed to just take the edge off. Harry slinked off away from that familiar alleyway, he didn’t want anyone to intervene.
Harry hissed as the dark mark on his thigh flared.
No unforgivable not so close to muggle road. Harry wanted that knife and so he loudly kicked a large bin over.
“I’m gonna gut you.” Rasped the mugger and Harry sighed he had been willingly to let him go.
Harry pointed at the shadowy figure.
“Stupefy!” A line of red light erupted from his wand hit the muggle mugger. Harry caught sight of the mugger face caught in state of total surprise as he was blasted off his feet and thrown bodily into the adjacent wall. The would-be muggle mugger crumpled over unconscious.
“Lumos” Harry calmly walked over and snatched the switchblade. He removed the weapon from the mugger’s possession, and he fiddled with it until he managed to get the blade to fold back into the handle.
Quite fascinating. He might even give it to Arthur Weasley. The other thing he took from the muggle was the brass knuckles. He whistled he knew for a fact they were illegal since his muggle school had a sign implicitly stated as such.
Well they were his now. He’d get more use out of them. Harry wasn’t going to stick his hands in the mugger’s pockets.
Harry was feeling mollified as he stowed them in his jumper’s pockets. Just in case, He wasn’t going to kill the muggle no that’d be cruel.
“Accio” He summoned just in case and he was right. The muggle did have another pair upon his person.
What was the mugger going to do? Tell the police that his clearly illegal weapons had been stolen? A plan was slowly taking shape in his mind.
He was going to have to find the opportunity to show draco how much of a child he truly was. The knuckledusters would help.
Because sometimes violence was the answer. Harry carefully placed one on his hand and slipped her fingers through the holes.
Harry hated that his fingers fit. Dudley did teach him something after all. Harry did know how to throw a punch...
