There was silence throughout the room as they all thought about that. After a few centons {minutes}, Roark looked over at Logan. "There's something else," he said, and when his friend refused to look at him, he reached out to lay his hand over Logan's and squeezed.
Hard.
Logan finally looked up, a guilty look in his eyes as he had an idea what this next part was going to be about. "Roark--"
"We know you're investigating something on your own."
"WHAT?!" came the surprised double shouts. "LOGAN!!"
Logan looked over at his cousins, then over at Harry, whose brow arched, before returning his gaze to Roark. "You want me to stop?"
"YES!" Fili and Kili cried at once.
"Of COURSE, you need to stop," Fili went on. "You know damn well just how dangerous it is to be investigating ANYTHING on your own."
"Hush, both of you," came the order, along with a look at Kili to silence whatever he was about to say. "That depends on what exactly you are investigating. If it's what I THINK it is, then no, I don't want you to stop, but you most certainly will no longer be doing it alone."
"Fili is right," Harry spoke up as he sat forward, making Logan look at him. "It's much too dangerous to be investigating anything on your own, especially with a case such as this Your family has just lost Kale. Let's not make them, " a nod to his cousins, "or Roark and I, have to call home to tell them they've lost you too."
"To that end, you now have a new partner. Healer Lt. Colonel Severus Prince Snape--" he chuckled suddenly as Logan's eyes widened, a look of not quite horror in them. "And yes, we are quite aware that he hasn't been in the field for more than several yahren {year}, but after your father and Dacian had nice long talks with him, he agreed to come with us, and to be your new partner. He also said it was to keep all of us out of as much trouble as he possibly could, NOT, I'm quite sure, that he has much hope of doing so."
Chuckles sounded at that, as well as a snort or two. "That's because he knows that you and Harry can't seem to stay out of trouble."
"That is quite possible," Harry said, amusement dancing in his emerald eyes. "Are you ready to tell us about it, Logan?" he asked.
Logan shook his head. "Not yet. So, will I be working with just Severus?" he arched a blond brow. "Just where IS Severus, by the way?"
"When we met him outside Headquarters as we were leaving, he said there was something that he needed to take care of, and that he'd see us in the morning, and no, you won't be working with just Severus, as he intends to take over the medical wing for however long we are here." He turned his head. "Are the two of you done with what you're working on?"
"Not completely, but I think we can let it rest a bit. Why?"
"Then I would like for the three of you to meet with Severus first thing in the morning before he has a chance to lock himself away in the potions lab. Logan, you're to tell him where you are in your investigation, what you're going to do next, and what you plan to do. I don't care what any of you do, just be careful in doing it."
"Yes, Sir," they said as one.
"Good. Now that THAT is settled...Logan, as soon as you're ready to talk about what you're doing, just let us know. Harry and I are free any time you need someone to listen, okay?"
"No pressure," Harry said, "Just know that we're here for you. Whenever you decide you're ready to discuss it, just come to us."
He nodded. "So..." he sipped from his glass, "at the same time we are working to bring Riddle down, we will also be investigating the team, Ardyn and the Garrison."
"Unfortunately, yes. We all know the reason Kale is dead is because of the leaks. We just have no idea which one. It's likely he found out something...something he didn't want...or simply could not believe."
"And because he didn't, or couldn't believe what he had found out, decided to confront this person with what he had discovered," Kili said as he looked at them.
"That is very likely exactly what happened," Harry said, swirling what remained of his wine in his glass, then drank it. "Of course, we will likely never know for sure what really happened."
"But...why would he? He knew better than to do something like that. He wouldn't have been so stupid as to confront a leak without backup."
"So you would think, Fi, but that is exactly what he did."
"So why not tell us? Ask one or two of us to be there with him when he confronted this person?"
"A couple of reasons. Let's tackle the first. Confronting a leak without the proper backup. Do you guys remember Mason?"
"Yes, of course, but that was a completely different situation. You were dating Mason when you discovered he had become a leak, and you did the right thing to take that information to the Counter-Intelligence team sent to act as guides."
"I did, but then I made the very stupid decision to confront him alone about what I had found, even after I had been told by Roan to wait for him and Gareth before I did anything." Here he stopped, shaking his head. "I didn't wait, and very nearly paid the price of that decision," a sudden wry grin twisted his lips. "I didn't hear the end of it from them, OR from Harry for secton's {weeks}."
"That's because you scared us half to death with that move," Harry grumbled, throwing a glare at his younger brother with glittering eyes. "We were not at all happy with you."
"What has that to do with Kale, a Counter-Intelligence Officer not waiting for, or even asking for, noe that I think about it, backup?"
