The Fourth Mate Revealed
The hospital had kept James for three days, and then released him telling him to take it easy for a while. Lily was beside herself with excitement as Remus helped his friend through the front door of the Potter mansion.
“Now you heard what the doctor said,” she looked at him sternly. “You’re supposed to rest and take it easy for at least another week.”
He sighed and rolled his eyes. “Heh, what do doctors know anyway.”
“James!” she warned with a scowl. “For once in your life you are going to do what someone else tells you!”
“All right, sheesh! I’ll behave… maybe.” He grinned at her and stuck out his tongue.
“I mean it James. Don’t make me get Remus and Sirius to stand guard over you.”
“And you know we’ll do it,” Remus added with a grin.
He sighed in defeat. “Fine… But I want it on the record that I’m not happy about it!”
Lily led the way up to the master bedroom with a triumphant smile on her face. She watched as James undressed and slipped back into bed. Then she tucked him in tightly like a mother tucking in a young child and sat down beside him. “At least this bed is more comfortable than the one at the hospital,” he mumbled half to himself.
“And we don’t have to leave you when visiting hours are over,” Sirius added nuzzling him gently. “I hated leaving you like that.”
Just then the fireplace erupted in green flames and out stepped Serverus Snape. “What in the bloody hell are you doing here!” Sirius snarled leaping to his feet.
“What do you think!” Serverus spat back sourly. “I’m here to see James.”
Sirius growled but backed down a little when James reached up to touch his hand lightly. “Is Dumbledore anywhere around?” the potions master asked looking around.
“No…” James answered shaking his head. “Why do you ask?”
Serverus stepped back into the fireplace and shouted, “all clear,” before stepping back out again. Green flames shot out again and this time Lucius Malfoy stepped into the room.
“What is he doing here!” it was Remus’ turn to be outraged.
“None of your business werewolf,” the blond replied with his usual cold smirk.
The whole room looked to James who sat with his head hung down and a defeated expression on his face. Lucius’ expression quickly turned to one of panic. “James, I’m sorry. I…”
“I’m not the one you should be apologizing to,” James replied not looking up.
The blond turned to look at Remus. “Forgive me. I’m just not used to completely being myself around others besides Serverus and James. I’ll try to watch what I say from now on.”
Remus nodded. “I suppose you’re forgiven. If James trusts you… Though I can’t imagine why.”
James shrugged and smiled softly. “I can’t explain it. I just do. All of you promise me you won’t say a word about this to Albus.”
“Why don’t you want him to know” Lily asked getting a little suspicious.
“Because I would prefer it that way,” Lucius chimed in. “Everyone here knows that if Dumbledore knew I was as close to James as I am he would try to get me to spy for him. I don’t like that man; nor do I like him thinking that I’m loyal to him. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” he scowled at the thought.
“Wait a minute,” Remus spoke up. “Have you been James’ inside information source?”
Lucius nodded. “I do it for James, and James alone. I believe that if anyone can defeat the Dark Lord it’s him.”
“Then why didn’t you keep him from getting captured!” Sirius cried out getting noticeably upset.
“I didn’t know,” the blond answered getting defensive. “Information is mostly on a need to know basis now. The Dark Lord knows there is a leak. I wasn’t to be involved so I wasn’t informed until it was already happening. There was nothing I could do.”
“Are you quite done giving him the third degree?” James glared at Sirius.
“He shouldn’t be here!” Sirius pouted. “Have you completely lost your mind!”
James sighed and shook his head. “I don’t really want to get into this right now either. Would you three please leave us for a bit?”
Sirius started to protest but Lily placed her hand over his mouth. “Of course love. We’ll be right downstairs if you need anything.”
She led a stunned Sirius out of the room with Remus following shaking his head. James sighed in relief when the door closed. “That could’ve gone better,” he mumbled quietly.
“I’m sorry,” Lucius apologized again.
“You better be,” James spoke in a harsh tone. “I’m not going to pick sides. There are only a few people I actually give a damn about. I don’t think it’s asking too much to want them all to get along with each other.”
“Then you had better have a little talk with Sirius,” Snape commented as he took a seat on the corner of the bed.
James growled softly and sat up a little. “Just worry about yourself. I’ll have a little chat with the others later. You know the rules Serverus. You don’t have to like each other but you will be civil with one another at the very least.”
Lucius inched his way over to the side of the bed and gingerly sat down. James chuckled as he watched. “What, are you afraid the house is going to swallow you whole?”
“It just… feels odd to be here,” the blond responded looking around the room. “You have a nice bedroom at least.”
“Were you expecting me to live in a shack?” James arched an eyebrow.
“No, of course not. I just… well I don’t know what I expected exactly.”
“I’ll give you the grand tour when I’m allowed to get up. But first thing’s first. Is this visit for business or pleasure?”
“Pleasure of course,” Serverus grinned. “We wanted to see how you were doing. I heard from Albus that you were being brought home today.”
“Please tell me he’s not planning on visiting today too.”
The potions master laughed and shook his head. “No, he’s far too busy for that.”
James sighed in relief and leaned back against the pillows. “Are you sure you don’t dislike him as much as I do?” Lucius asked with a smile.
“It’s complicated,” James answered gazing out the window. “He did adopt me and raise me. Though he was never there for me. He was always busy with something. And then there’s the fact that he tries to take full advantage of everything. Sometimes he doesn’t think about the consequences. I know that the moment I see him he’ll want me to tell him every intimate detail. As much as that would help our cause I’m still not ready to do it. I may never be ready.”
Lucius idly played with James’ hair. “Then let’s change the subject to a more pleasant one.” He smiled as he lightly kissed the side of James’ neck.
Serverus nodded. “I’ll go downstairs and see about getting some tea and snacks. I have to go back to Hogwarts of course, but you two can at least spend the day together.”
As the potions master disappeared into the hall Lucius pulled James into his lap still stroking his hair. “Yes, we have the rest of the day to spend together.”
Serverus left almost as soon as he returned with a tray full of James’ favorite foods. But as promised Lucius stayed until dinnertime. The pair talked about everything from the latest news from the Ministry to the best way to get rid of garden gnomes; and James was able to forget about his troubles for an afternoon.
