Chapter 19: A Yule Secret
“I can’t believe
that this happened,” Minerva said to Remus when he reported what had happened
in Azkaban. “But what I want to know is who did this?”
“I think we might
never know,” Remus said. “But at least Hermione doesn’t have to worry about Ron
trying something like he did before.”
Minerva nodded slightly and then got up. She looked out the
window for a while and then turned to him.
“I’m going to tell
Hermione that Ron’s dead,” she declared. “Want to join me?”
“Um…no,” he said. “Delivering
horrible news isn’t my area anymore.”
And he got up and left.

“So do you think
that Harry will return for the final year?” Kingsley asked Remus before he
left.
“Yes,” Remus
answered shortly. “We’ve already told Harry that he must complete his final
year and the Hogwarts library does have a large selection of books that will
aid him.”
“So long as it
helps us find something that belonged to Gryffindor,” Kingsley said. “We have
destroyed the snake, the cup, the ring, and the necklace, but we haven’t yet destroyed
whatever Gryffindor had and of course soon the locket will be destroyed as
well.”
“I can’t wait,”
Remus said. “Now if you will excuse me, I’ve got to get going.”
And he was gone.

Severus
hung his head low in the circle that he had conjured. It was hard sometimes to
use the old ways to do different things, but this was a lot better then using
something that could be traced to him and even though he was free, he still
felt like he was bounded to some rule that hadn’t yet been told to him. He
muttered the strange words, his words flowing like water and silk, and then
there was a flash of light and the soul inside Ravenclaw’s locket was gone. He
grounded himself and then put everything away.
He left the
room and headed off to Hermione’s quarters. He hoped that he could catch a word
with her before he had to go back and destroy Slytherin’s locket next. As he
walked down the corridor he heard Ginny and Harry talking to each other, and
they didn’t sound happy.
“I don’t
understand why we can’t get back together,” she said. “You-know-who wouldn’t
attack me here.”
“He will,” Harry
said hotly. “He doesn’t care about the walls of this school anymore, he’ll
destroy you and I’m not going to have that.”
Severus could almost feel the anger coming at him.
“Fine, be that
way,” she snarled.
And he heard her walking off, doors slamming along in her
wake. He then heard Harry leave and then continued on his way.

“He’s dead!”
Hermione said, shocked and relieved at the same time.
“Yes,” Minerva
said. “He died in Azkaban and no one will tell anyone how he died.”
Hermione bit her lip, hoping that
some idea on how he had died and who had killed him would enter her mind, but
nothing. Her mind was so happy that he was dead that it didn’t care about who
or what had killed him. He was gone and Septimus and everyone would be safe.
“Well I’ll leave
you alone, dear,” Minerva said.
And she got up and left.

Severus
reached Hermione’s quarters and knocked. He waited and when it opened he saw
not Hermione, but Minerva. He seemed surprised that she was here, but he waved
it away. She nodded and then left.
“Come in, Severus,”
Hermione said, her voice cheerful and light.
He nodded and entered, closing the door behind him.
“So what brings
you here?” she told him.
He looked at the floor, feeling like he did when he got his
first crush on Lily Evens, like he would tell Potter that.
“Well, the
Ravenclaw necklace has been freed of Voldemort’s soul and since it belongs to
you, then Minerva thought that you might like to have it.”
He walked over and put the necklace down. He then watched it
get picked up and didn’t look up until she cleared her throat.
“I was hoping that
we could talk,” Hermione said. “You have been avoiding me for several days and
I was hoping that it wasn’t something that I did when I was stupid and didn’t realize
that Ron had caused all this.”
Severus sat down, but on the other side.
“I don’t blame you
for feeling like you did,” he told her. “I would of felt the same way if I was
you.”
“And are you
alright now?” Hermione asked.
He shook his head.
“I have to go to
St. Mungo and talk to someone about what happened,” he said, his tone telling
Hermione that he rather face the monster that Harry defeated in his second year
then talk about his feelings.
She smiled sweetly at him.
“I have to go to
one as well,” she said. “But their okay and they don’t bite.”
Severus grunted, but didn’t answer.
“So is there
anything else that you want to talk about?” she asked.
Severus sighed and decided that it was time to get it over
with, to tell her why he believed that Ron had picked them. He knew that it
wasn’t going to be easy, but he better let it all out. It would be a lot better
then telling some nut it.
“Miss G-Hermione,”
he said, stopping himself. “I believe I know why Weasley chose us.”
Hermione looked at him.
“Why?”
Severus sighed, knowing that it was too late to turn back.
“I believe that he
knew that I fancied you during your fourth year.”
Hermione gasped, staring at him.
“You liked me,”
she said.
He nodded.
“I just saw you
walking in with that stunning dress on, your hair all up, and I fell for you,”
he admitted. “I was just as jealous as Weasley was that you had picked to go with
Victor can’t put two words together unless it’s Quidditch Krum.”
Hermione giggled and he felt himself go red.
“I’m so glad that
my embarrassment is amusing,” he told her, his old tone returning.
Hermione shook her head.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t
mean to make you think that,” she said. “But, well, I’ve fancied you as well.”
He stared at her shocked, and then she got up and left,
leaving him even more confused then he was when he walked in.
