Chapter Twenty-One

Ginny Pays for Lunch

After her luncheon with Hermione at the upscale restaurant, Ginny had arrived on her own doorstep almost sober, carrying the last half of the third bottle of wine. It was so good she wanted to share at least some with her husband. Before she could negotiate the catch on the door, it silently opened and Severus stood in the doorway.

He took in her slightly lopsided smile and the bottle in her arms and drew the correct conclusion � his wife had imbibed one too many. He was angry with her for worrying him because she was nearly two hours late, but as he watched her walk carefully into the hall, he saw an unexpected opportunity and decided drunk was good. He appreciated what a beautiful picture she made in the emerald dress he�d carefully picked out for her from Madame Malkin�s sketches and he especially enjoyed watching her autumn fire hair swish against the silk of the dress. He was fast developing an obsession with that copper hair and began thinking of ways to drape it over himself.

Ginny came up to her husband and placed the bottle into his hands. �Try this one, Severus, it�s really fine. Hermione and I went to a new restaurant near the Ministry. I can�t remember the name but it had these cunning little alcoves with magic windows so you felt you were in the country.

Snape hesitated for a second. He knew that restaurant and wondered in some irritation just how Hermione had known about it. It was probably that dope, Malfoy. That place was elegant and upscale but it also had a reputation for less salubrious activities upstairs, as he well knew personally. Didn�t Lucius know that Hermione wasn�t Narcissa? Hermione wasn�t going to be overly impressed by those things, but it was interesting that Lucius had taken her there. Was he setting the stage for taking Hermione upstairs in the future? He had been so adamant that he was marrying to regain his property and money, but Snape wondered again why Hermione had married him. Was it because she knew Lucius cared for her? Was it actually a love match after all and Lucius wasn�t saying because he was always so secretive and touchy about anything personal?

Snape put that intriguing puzzle aside as he took the bottle from his wife, put it on a side table and shepherded her toward the stairs leading up to their bedroom. �You should take off that dress before it gets wrinkled, love, but why don�t you leave the matching knickers and your pretty earrings on?� Snape cocked his head at his wife and raised one of his expressive, black eyebrows in a silent question.

Ginny wasn�t so lit that she didn�t understand the language of his eyebrow. Neither of the Snapes made it to dinner that night.

For all you Snape fans, I hope you enjoyed this couple. They certainly have a different dynamic from Lucius and Hermione, don't they? When I write them it just feels differently, too. At the moment those two are more overtly in tune with each other than our main couple and it shows in the writing that goes its own obstinate way without any direction from me. Rather like dowsing with a divining rod.
