Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, nor any of the characters from the books or movies. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
AN: Once again, I have failed to keep these updates coming. I can only apologize and try again. Here's an offering that will bring us to the inevitable conclusion, eventually.
Nubia: Now I feel like crap for making you wait so long.
Unneeded: Thanks for the support. I hate that problem with the updates, and I confess it may have been the program I use for word processing. I've worked a few bugs out, and it seems to have solved it. Plus, I check it immediately to fix it before people get stuck in the middle of a huge one paragraph chapter.
As for Dudley, I loved the part in the story where he tells Harry that he doesn't think he's a waste of space. There's something touching about it, so I'm giving Dudley a life in this story. A good life, I hope.
Chapter Twenty-One: Elves, Babies and the little things that make you a family
Roldo was not the brightest elf, though he was well trained and worked hard for the Malfoy family. He had never learned to count, but knew that elves counted by using their fingers. They had the standard ten, for the most part, but Roldo was part goblin, and his fingers were not the same as the others. He didn't know it, but he only had eight. He moved them one at a time until each had moved and then popped through the walls and into the room.
He saw Kreacher standing very still and turning a funny color, and Roldo knew that something was wrong. He snapped his fingers, lifting the other elf and moving him back onto the strip of carpet outside of the circle of runes. Kreacher drew a deep breath and his knees wobbled just before Roldo grabbed him and propped him up at his side. "What we do now, Great Elf?" the younger said.
"Need to get baby with no elf going into circle. There is only one way. We need girl Elf. Kreacher doesn't like this. Winky has baby, too." Before the other elf could speak, a crack sounded and a strange elf popped into being.
"You is here for dark baby?" she asked and the speechless elves nodded. "Linny get for you." she added and popped into the circle, next to the crib. She picked up the squirming baby and popped back to their location. "You take and Linny's family be safe. Go, go!" she handed it to Roldo and popped out again, leaving them with a wiggly little boy. They aparated out of the room and headed back to the open window. When they got there, Kreacher took the baby so that Roldo could climb through before he handed it to the younger elf and followed. Outside, they separated and the Malfoy elf disappeared leaving Kreacher to return to Winky and take her out of the garden.
At the exact same time, Harry and Ron's fireworks went out, leaving darkness in their wake, Lucius and his party broke off the attack and the fog thinned out. The Flint party looked around in wonder, but gave up this to return to the house, unaware of what had been happening there. They never checked the baby, thinking it best to let the house elves care for him and staying clear of any residual dark magic that he might accidentally do. They wouldn't know for months that he was gone.
Harry and Draco arrived at the door before the others, and seeing the blond reminded Harry of what they had talked about the previous night. He stewed on this as his lover rubbed his shoulders and the others arrived from their various paths. The elves came first, popping in with glowing faces and smiles that were disturbing on faces like Kreacher and Blesta's. Harry watched until Draco's elf, carrying a sleeping baby boy, popped in and handed it to Cho. She cried with joy, cuddling her baby until Angelina took her up to reintroduce little Severus Harry to his sister.
"Good job, Roldo. You will be rewarded for this." Draco said and the elf looked frightened. "Not clothes, old boy. I'll think of something you'll want. I want to show you that I appreciate you, you idiot."
This pleased the little elf and he moved away to join the mini party of his kind in the kitchen. Draco smirked and turned, knowing that Harry was near to bursting from his display. He didn't count of the stealth of Hermione and Ron, who had arrived in time to catch the whole thing and the witch decided his act was earning of a death grip version of a hug. "Granger? I can't breathe." he said and she reluctantly let him go.
"Sorry, Malfoy. I guess you are human, after all." she said and Ron laughed at his expression.
"Very human, Weasley. Now, what say we all join the little ones as they celebrate?" Draco asked and he turned to walk toward the table.
Back in the Manor, Lucius and Narcissa were entertaining a surprising couple as Molly and Arthur sat across from them in the smaller dining room and shared a late night dinner.
“Weasley, do try the sweet potatoes.” Lucius said passing a large bowl.
“Couldn't possibly be as good as my Molly's, Malfoy.”
“Now, Arthur. Mind your manners.” Molly gave her husband an affectionate glare before turning to Narcissa. “Did you see the baby at all?”
“No. He was taken away by the elf, Draco's I believe. I wonder if he takes after his father.”
“Blimey, I hope not.” Arthur said and Lucius raised his hand to cover his smile.
Draco scanned the letter again, willing the words to change.
Mr. D. Malfoy,
The Department of Implied Contracts wishes to inform you of your inclusion in a pending marriage contract to be finalized with the paternity results from the impending birth of the child by Ms. P. Parkinson. You are required to submit a drop of your blood to be tested upon the child's birth. Please come to the Department on Friday, the fifth of February.
Arias Dodge
Head of the Departments of Contracts and Documentation
He put the letter on the nightstand and pulled loose his tie. Harry would be up soon, and he wanted free of the restrictive clothing before he dealt with his lover.
“Draco? I've got good news,” Harry said as he threw the door open. “What's wrong?”
The blond indicated the letter as he pulled the tie from around his neck. Walking to the wardrobe was like lifting bricks from the floor instead of his own feet.
Harry scanned the page and pulled another sheet from his pocket. “Well, that confirms it. There were only four possible witches on my list, and she's the third. I wondered if it was someone from your past.”
“What does that mean? I was in the house with her, I never slept with her.” Draco said.
“Oh, I know that. You couldn't have. Even though she was a Slytherin, she was still a girl. After Hermione, I won't ever doubt that, again. No, I just wondered if it was too Slytherin for someone you knew. Like if it was too brave for a Gryffindor to save Cho's baby?”
“Harry, what are you talking about? Never mind. You'll have to come with on the fifth. You'll need to be tested, as well.” Draco said and Harry nodded. “Sorry to have ruined your good news. It was about the witches on that list, right?”
Harry looked down and stared at it for a second, then shook his head. “No. It's about Dudley, er, Duke. He and Hannah are getting married.”
“Hannah Abbott? Sirius Black's daughter?” Draco said.
“Yep. Hannah Abbott Black, actually. We proved it to the Ministry, so now she's official. Her brother, too. But, she'll probably drop the Abbott part. Maybe Duke can change his name to Black. They don't say.” Harry pulled another sheet of parchment from his pocket and handed it to the blond. “She wants you to get your father to give her away. Says he's the closest thing to a Black she can think of, unless you'll do it.”
“Is this a trick?” Draco said.
“Yep. She wants you, Drake. Will you do it?” Harry asked and the blond sighed dramatically.
“I am the only other male Black alive, and her brother is so shy. I'll be honored.”
Harry reached out and pulled the blond to him, hugging so tightly that Draco considered complaining. He patted the saviors shoulders and smirked into his shirt.
“Hannah will be so pleased. Now, about Pansy?” Harry said.
“I'll deal with her, after the baby is born. If it's mine, Father will arrange for the paperwork to claim it. If it's yours, you can get Granger on it.”
“Granger-Weasley. What about this Implied Marriage Contract.” Harry corrected.
“Never happened. Father will see to it. He wants me to remain his heir, whether this new child is a boy or not, so he'll make sure I am not manacled by a witch who would pull a stunt like this. It's highly suspect. She could foist off another child that isn't even blood, in the future. I'll talk to him in the morning.”
“I suppose. So, what are you hoping for, a boy or a girl?”
“Are you serious? I'm hoping it's yours.” Draco announced before leaving the room.
Winky's baby was born on March 13th, a beautiful Saturday morning. The baby, a boy, was named Dobby, and the two elves assured Harry that the name was to honor his friend. Roldo agreed that it was the perfect way to remember his brother. It was so tiny that Harry could hold it in his palm and its nappies were made from Molly's quilt squares, without her knowledge, of course.
“Ours will be much bigger,” Harry whispered to the blond as he changed Little Dobby for the first time.
“Shut it, Potter.” Draco sneered down at the little beast, but his glare softened when Dobby grabbed Harry's finger and shoved it into his mouth. “You're really getting into this, aren't you?”
“Surprised? Just because you're the effeminate one . . “
“Hey, now. I was just not ready for you to be so parental. You like babies that much, huh?”
“Not just babies. This is Winky and Kreacher's. And Cho's twins are Snape's. They're family.”
“Great! Now, I have house elves in my family.” but Draco's words had no venom.
