The Grindelwald Legacy
If there are lots of mistakes in this chapter, I’m sorry. I have flu and spent a rotten Christmas in bed feeling sorry for myself. Will do my best to write more soon. Happy new year everyone.

Chapter 21
“Go on gran, you can tell me. You know something, I know you do.”
“Lucy it’s not my place to tell you, at least not as far as the boy is concerned.”
“He’s hardly a boy gran, and what caused him to have those horrible fits?”
“What you saw was the after effects of one of the unforgivables, remember we discussed them a while back. The cruciatus is one of the most appalling curses there is, the pain from that curse is excruciating and people have died agonising deaths because of it. They are the lucky ones, others simply go insane when the pain becomes too much for them to bare. From what you described, it will be a while before he is well.”
“So who did it, any idea’s?”
“Yes, I have a pretty good idea.”
“You do? So tell, who was it?”
Hetty sighed, went to make a pot of tea, then sat down and told Lucy everything she knew about Lord Voldemort, aka Tom Riddle.”
“So that’s what you were all talking about that day the headmaster came here. I wondered what a Voldemort was. So what does Sever… Professor Snape have to do with him? Is he one of those Death Eaters? Why is he allowed to work at the castle if he is? Why does Voldemort hurt him if he’s one of them? Hagrid said it’s happened before. And how come you let him come here when he’s one of the bad guys?” Her eyes widened. “Gran,” She whispered. “Are you one of the bad guys too?”
Hetty started laughing. “So many questions, Lucy none of us are ‘bad guys’ as you call them. I cannot tell you everything I’m afraid, but suffice it to say that Severus is not as he seems. He is a good and noble young man. You must trust him.”
“Trust him? Gran you’ve seen him, he oozes badness. Kind of. What if he tries to kill someone? How can you be sure he’s on our side?”
“I will speak to Albus, you are a little on the young side, but perhaps you can take an oath so we can explain things a little more fully. For now I need you to keep all of this to yourself Lucy. I mean it, you tell no one what you know and what you have seen.”
“I won’t gran, unless I think it puts you in danger.”
Severus and Albus sat in Severus’ living room, discussing what happened when Severus was summoned.
“Several raids were planned, I had no forewarning otherwise you would have known about them. The families were all muggles, parents and siblings of muggleborn witches and wizards that attend this school. I was teamed with Jugson, Rowle, and Malfoy, apparently it was a ploy to test my loyalty. We were to torture the victims prior to killing them, I managed to enter the house first and cast the avada kadavra before the others had a chance to do anything. My behaviour was not well received by the Dark Lord, hence the punishments.”
Albus saw the haunted look in Severus’ eyes, he was always this way when he was forced to take part in bringing about death and destruction for Voldemort. His role as a spy for the order of the Phoenix was a heavy burden, and one he bore in misery and solitude.
“What happened when you returned Severus? From what I was told, you were suffering the effects of crucio, yet when I arrived here you bore no symptoms of such a curse.”
“Oh I received the curse alright, several times.” He told Albus what happened from the time he entered the doors and saw Lucy staring at him horrified. “She denies doing anything, but I think that was because she believed I was accusing her of doing something untoward. It is my guess that she willed the symptoms away, how else can you explain the effects disappearing so suddenly?”
“I think you may be right Severus. It must have been extremely distressing for her to witness you in such pain. I know I find it so. How strange that she could rid you of your pain, yet was unable to aid herself when her knee was so badly injured.”
Severus had his own theory about that one, but he was not about to relate it to the Headmaster.
“I will talk to her tomorrow when she arrives. If, as we suspect, she used the magic of her mind to dispel your symptoms, you owe her a big thank you my boy.”
Severus frowned. “I do not see why, I healed her leg, we are even now.”
“Never the less, she thanked you for doing so. It is only fair you return the courtesy.”
That evening after supper, Hetty left Lucy under the watchful eye of Maxi while she apparated to Hogwarts to speak with Albus.
“I take it this is about this afternoon Hetty. Is your granddaughter alright? It was a most traumatic experience for her.”
“She’s fine Albus, but obviously it raised a lot of questions for her, and I am loath to deceive her. She already knows more than she should, much of what she figured out for herself. The way things are going she’s on the right track to finding out more, and I refuse to allow her to be obliviated, that leaves one option as far as I can see.”
Albus rested his chin on his steepled fingers, processing Hetty’s suggestion whilst trying to think of an alternative. After several minutes he still could not think of one. “Let me discuss it with the others, at the moment it seems to be our only option, but perhaps a fresh mind can come up with something before we take the next step.”
Hetty nodded. She couldn’t think what else they could do, but was willing to wait.
“No. Definitely not.” Severus roared back at the Headmasters suggestion.
They were at #12 Grimauld Place, along with Minerva, Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt. Molly and Arthur Weasley were in attendance, as were the Weasley twins George and Fred, and Bill Weasley, as well as a few lesser known members of the Order of the Phoenix.
Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny were on the landing, trying to listen in with several sets of Weasley’s extendable ears. Unfortunately someone had place an imperturbable charm on the door and they couldn’t hear a thing.
“Something’s going off, they never have meetings mid week unless it’s serious.” Ron stated.
“Well there’s nothing we can do about it, we’ll have to wait for Fred and George to tell us after the meeting.” Hermione put in.
In the kitchen the adults argued. Remus and Kingsley agreed with Severus, while Sirius agreed with Albus simply because he didn’t want to agree with Snape. Tonks couldn’t see a problem with going ahead, nor could Arthur, while Molly was furious. “She’s still a child for heavens sake, we can’t. And how are the others going to react when they find out? You know what those three are like.” She argued, referring to Harry, Ron and Hermione. “They’re going to argue that they should be allowed in if this girl is inducted.”
“Exactly my point.” Severus agreed, glad to have a formidable ally.
“Why can’t we just obliviated her?” Kingsley demanded.
“Because her grandmother will not allow it.”
“Her grandmother, and who exactly is her grandmother? You have not even told us the girls name Albus.”
The headmaster swept his eyes over the group, returning to Kingsley. “Hetty Grindelwald. The girl in question is Gellert’s daughter, Lucy.”
Molly fell into her chair in shock, while Tonks studied everyone with a puzzled expression.
“Grindelwald, the same one you defeated?” The young auror asked.
“The very same Nymphadora. She has only recently been located, having been brought up in muggle orphanages since she was born. Her mother died during childbirth and Gellert himself was not in a position to raise the child. Dear Hetty knew nothing of her existence until recently. Lucy now resides with her in Hogsmead.”
Molly’s maternal gene instantly came to the fore. The thought of any child without parents broke her heart and she automatically assumed Lucy must have had a deprived childhood because of her upbringing. After all, poor Harry had led a terrible life under the care of his aunt and uncle, what must it be like in an orphanage. “Well of course she must be admitted to the Order, the poor girl needs to feel she belongs somewhere.”
Severus rolled his eyes, there went his main ally. “Molly, the girl has not had a deprived upbringing, in fact she is rather well adjusted, for someone her age.”
“Severus is correct, Lucy is a happy young lady and perfectly content living with her grandmother. The reason she is being put forward for initiation into the Order is not for the purpose of adopting her. Rather it is because she is very astute and knows a great deal more than she should, and is well on the way to figuring out more. Already she has guessed Severus’ role. A show of hands please for those who agree.”
Albus counted the raised hands. “And those against.”
“Then the decision is made, Kingsley, if you would arrange a meeting for Saturday evening, I will take her to meet Fawkes, and if he is agreeable, she will take the oath this coming weekend.”
