The next morning everyone unwrapped their Christmas gifts. Sirius and Remus both gave him collections of rare books about spells. Some were dark, but most focused on Defence Against Dark Arts and battle spells.. There was even an Auror training manual. It contained lots of useful spells.
Hermione had already read the book New Theory of Numerology, Harry's present to her. She was also wearing his second present, an engraved silver bracelet.
Ron was playing with his new Broom Compass and was steadily eating through the mountain of sweets he received.
Ginny had opened Harry's present first – and had yet to open anything else. She stood before a mirror and admired the engraved silver and diamond necklace. Just as Hermione’s bracelet, it was enchanted with several protective charms. Which was a more than good enough excuse for the girls to wear them whenever they left their rooms (and inside).
Remus and Sirius had each gotten a pensive and a set of potions from Harry along with a set of new 'Handy Gadgets' from the twins. Sirius mentioned that he wished he could try them out soon, eyeing the four bottles of Polyjuice potion. Remus got only one bottle of Polyjuice but a bottle more of Veritaserum than Sirius. (Both thought that they were better of than the other.)
Finally Molly Weasley pried herself away from the Muggle cookery book Harry gave her and got everyone (except Sirius of course) together to travel to St. Mungo's again to visit Arthur. This time they used a car Mundungus had 'borrowed' and had magically enlarged the space inside.
Mr. Weasley was really happy about the fuse and screwdriver set Harry gave to him. He wasn't as happy when his wife screamed at him, after she found out he had allowed the healers to try to stitch up his wounds.
“It works well on Muggle wounds...” Hermione mentioned, as she, Ron, Harry and Ginny walked up the stairs to the Visitors Tearoom on the fifth floor.
Before they reached the tea room they met Gilderoy Lockhart, who it seemed had just escaped his ward. His nurse was happy that he had visitors and ushered them into the long time residents’ ward for permanent spell damage to talk to him. (More like distract him, so she could do her work...)
While their former professor tried to give them autographs, Harry saw the nurse place a potted plant on the nightstand of another occupant of this ward. As soon, as he spotted it, he drew his wand and pointed it on the plant.
“Get away from that plant!” He ordered her. The nurse quickly hurried away from the plant.
“It's charmed so nobody realises, what sort of plant it is,” he mentioned. “Not a simple spell either. FINITE INCANTO TEREARUN!”
The spell was erased and the nurse gave a scared screech. It was a Devil's Snare. Another flick of Harry's wand and the plant was inside an unbreakable glass ball.
“You better take this to your superiors.” Harry mentioned. “This wasn't a joke, it was attempted murder. You better keep quiet about who undid the charm though. You'd get fired if they found out that you put Devil's Snare on a patient's nightstand...”
They had some problems getting rid of the glass Harry summoned though... they had to call in an Auror to take care of it. After the nurse left the ward with the Devil's Snare, Harry spotted someone he knew.
Neville stood along with his grandmother at the last two beds in the ward.
“Neville...” Harry said, just loud enough to get the others to notice him.
“Neville? Where? Oh, there! Hello Neville, who're you visiting?” Ron called out. They left Lockhart and moved to their friend.
“I'm pleased to meet you, Harry. Neville speaks most highly of you.” Mrs. Longbottom said, shaking his hand.
“Thanks, Mrs. Longbottom,” he answered.
“You two are clearly Weasleys... Ron and Ginny, right? I know your parents. Not well of course, but fine people, fine people.... And you must be Hermione Granger?” She addressed them one after the other. Hermione was startled Mrs. Longbottom knew her name, but shook hands all the same.
“Now, who are you visiting, Neville?” Ginny asked.
“His parents of course.” Harry said.
“Why are they here?” Ron questioned.
“They've been tortured for two hours with the cruciatus curse by Bellatrix Lestrange and her fellow Death Eaters.” Harry answered them, before Neville or his grandmother could reply. “Just keep quiet about it. It's his right to not just tell everyone at Hogwarts.”
“Oh...” Ginny said before she hugged Neville. “Don't worry. We won’t tell anyone.” His Grandmother frowned at him.
“At least you told one of your friends about this. You should tell anyone. Your parents were great Aurors, who offered their sanity to protect you and anyone else!” Neville's mother stood up, came to them and held her hand out to him, humming some tune.
“Take it, whatever it is!” Mrs. Longbottom ordered him. Neville held his hand out and his mother gave him an empty bubble gum wrapper.
“Now Alice, dear, get back into your bed.” Mrs. Longbottom said softly to her daughter in law.
When she accidentally brushed Harry's right hand with hers, his face became painful for a moment and she grabbed the hand as if it was her last hope. She drew it to her face and laid it onto her cheek.
“She has never done that with anyone...” Mrs. Longbottom whispered. Harry put his left hand on her other cheek, cupping her face, and started murmuring.
“Your mind is scattered, your soul bruised... your mind can't heal until you soul has. Neville, Mrs. Longbottom, please put your hands onto mine.” They didn't ask why, they just did.
“Concentrate on your love for her,” he ordered, power flowing out of him and engulfing the three Longbottoms, connecting them.
Neville and his Grandmother gasped in pain, while Alice Longbottom smiled and closed her eyes. When Harry sealed his power inside himself again, they all three relaxed while Alice fainted. Harry caught her before she could fall to the floor and put her back into her bed.
“What happened?” Mrs. Longbottom asked.
“When our skin came in contact, I felt the pain of her soul and she reacted to mine. She must have felt how strong it is. I connected you to her and I tried to use your feelings for her to heal her soul. If I was successful, her mind will now start to heal.”
Harry went to Neville's sleeping father and touched his cheek. He tore his hand away as if was. Harry swallowed, before he turned to Neville.
“I'm sorry. I can't help him. The wounds on his soul are to grave and...”
“What?” Mrs. Longbottom asked.
“It's not healing itself. It's like he's given up. Their souls were once equally hurt, but she didn't give up. She slowly healed herself. Even if I wasn't successful, she would heal her soul within the next view years herself and start healing her mind... But he didn't.”
“Are you sure, you can't do anything for him?” Mrs. Longbottom asked, tears in her eyes.
“WE” he started, “could try the same thing we did for Alice earlier. If we succeed, his soul would start healing, but it would be much more painful for all of us and... we'd have to repeat it at least ten times with breaks of at least a week in between if we want to heal his soul completely. But...”
“What?” asked Neville this time.
“You two might... loose your own sanity if you're not strong enough.”
“Why?” Hermione wanted to know.
“This pain is just as strong and dangerous as the cruciatus curse itself at the moment. And they would have to endure it for a whole minute.”
“What about you?” Mrs. Longbottom asked.
“You Know Who used the curse on him, after he used Harry's blood to revive himself.” Neville mentioned.
“He's been tortured far longer than this. And he's much stronger now than he was then. He'll be alright with a mere minute. I'll risk it, if you do, too.” Mrs. Longbottom thought about it for some time.
“If it was just me...” she started.
“Then I don't even need to try.” Harry cut her of. “Besides, Neville is stronger than anyone, including he himself, gives him credit for.” She took a deep breath.
“I'll risk it,” she decided.
Harry stood at one side of the bed, Neville and his Grandmother on the other.
When Harry laid his hands on the man's cheeks, they laid theirs onto his and were immediately engulfed in his power. All three had their torment written all over their faces, but no one screamed in pain or tore their hands away to break the connection. After one minute Harry sealed his power again, and removed his hands.
“If we've succeeded he'll start to recognize the two of you, just like she had all along.” Harry explained them.
“I'll meet you here next Saturday at 10am, then I'll ascertain if there is any reason to continue.”
“Thank you Harry.” Neville said, looking pale but steady.
“I... I've almost given up my hope they would get back to normal...” she whispered, with tears in her eyes. “I won’t know how to thank you, if you heal them.”
“I can't heal them.” Harry corrected her. “All I'm able to do is connect you to them so your love for them can heal them. As strong as I am, love is stronger. It's the most powerful and most ancient of all magic powers.” He waited a moment, before he turned and started to go out.
“Hey, Harry, what are you...? Wait! Bye Neville, Mrs. Longbottom.” Ron said, before he and the girls went after Harry.
When they finally caught up to Harry, he was leaning on the wall next to Arthur's ward, his face buried in his palms.
“Harry? What's wrong?” Hermione asked, snuggling onto him from one side, while Ginny did the same from the other.
“What have I become?” They heard him murmur..
“Talk to us, Harry!” Ginny ordered. “Just tell us everything.”
“I didn't know all this stuff...” he whispered. “Not until I touched her skin. Even then I didn't. Not really. I just acted without knowing, what I usually do. Afterwards I knew... but....”
“You helped them, didn't you?” Ron reminded him.
“Yes... I did, but... I did because of Neville. He is a friend. I wanted to help him. If it wasn't for him, I might have...”
“Well, you don't have any obligation to suffer like that to help strangers.” Ron told him. “You don't need to help everyone.”
“Ron,” Harry said, finally taking his hands of his face. “This isn't about that. They... their souls were so weak, I could have done anything with them. Even ripped them out of their bodies to make myself stronger, like a Dementor.”
His three friends went stiff.
“I realised it afterwards...” he continued. “If they weren't Neville's parents I wouldn't have helped them... and if they had been my enemies... I don't know what I'd have done. I just don't know. I don't want to know...”
He let himself slide down the wall, until he was sitting there.
“Sometimes I'm scared of myself,” he whispered.
