“We’re going,” Snape said in a low and deadly tone.
“You bet your fangs we are,” Alex hissed and stormed out of the club; his head was up and he sniffed every so often. He stopped in front of Sampson. “When did she leave?”
“She said she had some friends coming minutes ago,” Sampson said, puzzled at Alex’s change in demeanor. “They snuck out the back.”
Alex nodded grimly and stormed out to the parking lot. Philippe was hot on his heels. Celeste had hung back, shaking her head as she reread the letter. “Something isn’t right,” She said softly.
“Explain,” Snape snapped.
“When have you ever known them to just come out and tell you where they’d be? I’ve been trying to catch those damn muggles for almost six years, tailing the girls as much as I could and they still managed to elude me. They aren’t at the airport.”
Snape let out an angry hiss. “Where would they be then?”
“There is no telling. They’ve never been attacked in the same place twice and never back to back like this. You and Alex need to find them,” Celeste said sadly.
“How can we do that when they’ve disappeared?”
“You’ve both drank Melody’s blood. Your bond might be old Severus but with you and Alex, you should be able to feel her.”
“I haven’t been able to feel her in years,” Snape said softly, sadness laced his tones.
“Yes you have. It’s a niggling feeling in the back of your mind, the inkling that something is horribly wrong but you can’t put your finger in it. You might have written it off as paranoia or it could have coincided with something truly horrible but it’s there. That why Alex picked up on it so fast. He’s been able to feel her for a while now but finding her is difficult. If you search together, you can find her.”
“And you know this because?”
“My sire found my mother the same way. It was too late for her but it isn’t for them. I just know it.”
Snape walked over to Alex thoughtfully. “How do we do this? The last time I exerted myself she threw me off.”
“She threw me off too, remember? She’s become practically immune. Still, I can feel her. She’s terrified,” his voice cracked. “Close your eyes, see if it is your own fear or hers you feel.”
Snape closed his eyes and inhaled sharply. His fist clenched and his eyes snapped open, now completely indigo and filled with anger. Alex extended his hand, palm out as if waving hello. Snape placed his hand on his in answer. “Now,” Alex said softly, “we search.”
“Will they be able to find them?” Hermione breathed, not wanting to disturb them.
“I believe they can,” Celeste said softly. “Between the pair, they have the strongest bond imaginable. If Severus is as good a legilimens as Melody touts him to be, they’ll find her in no time.”
“What does legilimency have to do with it?” Draco whispered.
“It combines the consciousness. He’s been with her intimately. Alex has consumed enough of her blood to feel her presence. Combined, they can track her as long as she remains conscious,” Celeste whispered.
“My God,” Alex exclaimed as his eyes popped open. “They found the house. No wonder she gave the entire staff the night off.”
“What?” Philippe yelled.
Severus took a steadying breath. “It’s protected against muggles seeing magic, but not seeing the place itself. Let’s go.”
Alex held out the bracelet and soon the tug of the port key grabbed hold. Loud shouts were heard as they landed.
“Tell me you fucking cunt or I’ll break you in half!” A male voice screamed.
A wild cackle sounded out. “Go ahead. I like the pain.” Melody’s voice sounded strained.
A sharp snapping noise sounded out and an anguished cry filled the air. They all seemed to go on auto pilot, running full tilt until they came upon a gruesome scene. About fifteen to twenty men were all gathered in a circle, jeering and cheering on a man in the middle who was currently beating the twins with a baseball bat. What happened next was so fast that neither Draco nor Hermione could tell what was going on.
One minute, taunts and anguished screams filled the air and the next, a pile of men lay battered and broken on the ground. Blood dripped from the fangs of Alex, Celeste, and Severus. They were shaking in fury and exertion. Philippe had barreled into the middle of the fray and pulled out an unconscious Harmony. Melody lay in the middle of the pile, trembling in pain.
Draco, trying to ignore the carnage, pulled Hermione through the pile and knelt in front of Melody. He cast several healing spells in succession. Hermione concentrated as hard as she could on lending Draco the magic he needed. She tried not to think about the violent manner that these men had lost their lives. The feelings from Draco were overpowering those of her own horror. He thought that they deserved it for ganging up on two defenseless women.
“How?” Melody croaked out when he repaired her crushed larynx.
Draco was concentrating so hard that he didn’t catch her question. Hermione stepped in, taking a deep breath to steady herself. “Professor Snape and Alex combined powers somehow and located you.”
Melody smiled softly. “Finally, he embraces who his is fully and I’m not around to see it.” She coughed and closed her eyes, slipping into unconsciousness.
“Let’s get them inside,” Alex said softly. He’d cleaned the blood from his face and hands. “We’ll be able to tend to them better in there.” He scooped Melody off the ground and positioned her in a way where he wasn’t hurting her further. Snape knelt down next to Philippe and grabbed Harmony. They ran to the house so fast they practically disappeared.
The night was tense and long. The muggle assailants had been transfigured into rocks and dumped outside the property line. It made Hermione shiver at the callousness but she still couldn’t blame them for their cold demeanor. Neither woman regained consciousness. As the clock struck midnight, six very sober people murmured their New Year’s wishes in despair. The house seemed so empty without the twins’ taunts and their constant arguing. They’d both sustained enough damage that they couldn’t be fully healed. It would be touch and go for quite a while, if they even survived.
Having had enough, Snape stalked off outside and began conjuring things to throw. It was eerily silent except for the rhythmic sounds of glass and porcelain being shattered, put back together, and then broken again. Philippe had decided to go to bed, leaving explicit instructions to wake him up if they so much as twitched. He didn’t have the stamina that the daywalkers and the vampire had.
Celeste made sure Alex would be alright for a while and walked outside to speak with Snape. Judging by the silence, she’d warded the house against prying ears. Hermione hoped she could get through to the man. He’d seemingly changed so much since he came here. He smiled more, joked more, and relaxed his ever present rigid posture and indifferent expression. She couldn’t help but wonder just how much of his persona was an act. Who was the real man behind the mask and would this cause him to slip behind it indefinitely?
“Come on love,” Draco whispered in her ear and startled her from her musings. “Let’s go to bed.”
“I don’t want to leave them,” she said sadly.
“Don’t worry Hermione,” Alex said softly. “I don’t sleep. I’ll stay with them and I’ll wake you up if they come to.”
Hermione nodded and trudged up the stairs with her husband. They fell into bed and a light sleep that was restless and filled with nightmares of fangs, blood, and the terrified screams of Melody and Harmony.

“Any change?” Draco asked as they stepped into the house from their morning run. It was January second, the day they were supposed to return to Hogwarts. That way, they’d be there for the Saturday arrival of everyone else. Their time up until now had been filled with worry and non-stop drills. Snape had taken over their instruction and kept them so busy they could hardly think.
“No,” Celeste said miserably as she sipped her coffee. “Alex went hunting last night and is bunkered down at the clinic until nightfall. He’s wasted all his energy trying to wake them up. Philippe is with them now. It doesn’t look good.” She viciously wiped the tears from her eyes.
“We’re supposed to return at noon today,” Snape drawled as he sat down beside her on the couch. “I’m afraid we have no choice.”
“Of course not,” Celeste said softly. She and Snape had gotten surprisingly close since his tantrum the other night. It had taken her a few hours but she finally convinced him to come inside and go to bed. “Go back and finish it. They would want that. I’ll owl you if there is any change.”
Snape nodded stoically. “Thank you.” He turned to Draco and Hermione who were still standing by the door. “You two need to go upstairs and pack.”
“Already done,” Hermione said softly. “I couldn’t sleep last night so I packed us both up.”
“Melody left instructions for you two to take a few books back with you. She said they’d prove invaluable to you both. Harmony also has a few letters for Severus and Dumbledore. She asked me to give them to you if she were unable,” Celeste’s voice cracked. “They also said to wish you luck.”
The couple nodded stoically. The day seemed just a bit bleaker now. All too soon, noon came and they said a sad goodbye to the small band of friends they’d met in their short stay in America. Snape had given Celeste a kiss on the cheek and whispered something illegible in her ear before he shook hands with Philippe and returned to the port key. “Thank Alex for us,” He said softly just before the port key pulled them into the long trip to Hogwarts.
They landed in the Forbidden Forest. Hermione fell to the ground sobbing. Draco knelt and held her closely to his chest. “It’s so senseless.”
“Not to them,” Snape said softly. “It’s dinner time. You two need to get to the great hall to eat.”
“What about tonight?” Draco asked. “I’m not sure I can sleep without her.”
“I’m sure you can figure something out. You’ve excelled at being a sneak here recently.” He had a strange twinkle in his eye. Then the walls came down and his indifferent mask fell into place. “Detention will begin again Monday. Potter and Miss Weasley will be joining us soon. Melody left instructions on how to train them, with their unique circumstances. Miss Granger,” his voice cracked a bit. “You will drill Potter on occlumency until he can block in his sleep. Mr. Malfoy, you and I will be working on something else. We will discuss that further on Monday. For now, settle back in and remember these past few weeks.”
With those last instructions, he stalked out of the forest. Hermione stood back up and dried her tears. “So,” she said, clearing her throat. “Should I expect a bird at the door?”
Draco smirked. “You know it. I’ve grown quite used to someone hogging the bed.”
“Prat,” Hermione snorted as she shoved into him. She frowned. “You think they’ll pull through?”
“I don’t know,” Draco said, his face falling. “It doesn’t look good, does it? I suppose we do what they wanted us to. We owe them that much.”
Hermione nodded. “Who’s going first?” She asked, walking towards the opening in the forest.
“Ladies first,” Draco drawled. “I am a gentleman after all.” He smiled and bowed, chuckling as Hermione grinned and ran off.
Draco stalked into the great hall, aware of all eyes on him. He was uncomfortable with all the attention, knowing good and well it was the magnetism of the vampire that drew the eye. He was going to have to get that under control. His eyes strayed over to his wife, who had her head down reading a book. He noticed that she shielded it from everyone’s view although it looked like a simple potions text. He knew better; it was one of Melody’s ancient tomes.
Thinking of the lively American made his mood sink lower. She was outrageous in the best way and managed to not only draw his godfather out of his bitter shell, but give his wife confidence and teach them invaluable lessons. He had no illusions that they wouldn’t pass through the veil very soon. He shook away his thoughts and tucked into his meal. He suppressed a laugh at the thought that his shepherd’s pie was a bit bland. He’d gotten used to the spicy Mexican fare at the Bach house.
Suddenly a lone owl flew into the Great Hall. Draco recognized it immediately as Archimedes, the twin’s owl. It swooped over to his godfather and landed gracefully, patiently holding out his leg. Snape merely blinked and took the missive, feeding the bird a bit of roast before it soared out the window. He unrolled it, a look of pain flashing across his face before he crumpled his missive and stormed out of the room.
Hermione looked up in fear and sadness, trembling from the stain of suppressing her emotions. She wondered if that was the news they’d been dreading. Were the twins dead? Her appetite completely gone, she got up from her meal and headed back to Gryffindor tower. When she arrived, she closed her eyes and focused on Draco.
“So, they’re gone?” She heard Draco’s voice clearly.
“According to Celeste, they stopped breathing right after we left.” She heard Snape said softly.
“Stopped breathing, that’s how she put it?” Draco asked, confused.
“Yes,” Snape said tersely.
She knew Draco was shaking his head sadly. “What a waste.”
“A waste of what?” Snape asked, his tone was dead.
“Power, knowledge, life for fucks sake!” Draco said exasperated. “Those two were absolutely brilliant and then some stupid muggles came and ruined them. I-I, damn it, it almost makes me sympathize with the Dark Lord.”
“That is why the Dark Lord is so powerful. Tell me, you met several members of the twin’s staff while we were there. Did they act at all like those animals?”
“No,” Draco whispered. “They were all friendly and helpful. Those muggles reminded me of…of my father." His voice broke and Hermione felt a tear run down her cheek from his turmoil.
“Exactly. Draco,” Snape sighed heavily. “Evil isn’t just reserved for muggles. Wizards have the potential to be just as evil. It is power and the corruption from that power that is truly the enemy. Had Melody been born a muggle, she would still have been just as wonderful a person as she was. Those animals would be just as horrible as wizards, and a right sight more dangerous to boot. It was exactly the things you sympathize with that spurred the Dark Lord on. I realized it much too late. We are no different than them; we just have the power to cause more destruction.”
She could feel the world drop on Draco’s shoulders at that moment. If she could have gone to him without getting caught, she would have. He’d accepted her as a witch but she didn’t think it had dawned on him that muggles were basically the same. His feelings of shame saddened her. He was very quiet for a while, studying his new insight. Hermione almost drifted to sleep before she heard it.
“No more people are going to die,” Draco said softly. “Starting with Dumbledore. Hermione came across an old potion of Merlin’s the other day. It’s similar to that one Shakespeare was talking about in Romeo and Juliet. The user appears dead for a few days but the heart only stops for a second. I think it would qualify them as deceased, negating oh say, an unbreakable vow?”
“An interesting thought,” Snape drawled. “We’ll continue this Monday. For now, I have to go and speak with Albus.”
“Good night godfather,” Draco said as he left.
‘Think we can do it?’ Hermione jumped when she realize he was speaking to her.
‘I think we can,’ she thought back. ‘We have to try.’
‘It’s nice to be able to talk to you without having you run me over.’
‘Prat.’
Draco chuckled and then sobered. ‘I’m so sorry Hermione. I didn’t even make a connection.’
‘Stop Draco, I understood just fine. Let it go.’
‘I’m not sure I deserve you.’
‘Of course you do.’
‘Says you. I’m not going to give you up though. I’ll be there in a minute love.’
‘See you soon.’

“Mione! Mione!”
Hermione was startled when her friends came up and hugged her at the Gryffindor table. She’d been in a daze all day. It had been comforting to wake up with Draco that morning but the gloom of realizing that the twins were gone seeped in quickly. The teenagers were very subdued today, choosing to stay in the Room of Requirement all morning and practice everything that Melody had taught them. It was sobering to realize how much the spunky redhead had helped them with.
“How was your holiday?” She asked them weakly.
“It would have been a right sight better if I didn’t look like a bloody muggle clown for half of it,” Ron mumbled.
“You should have kept your nose out of other people’s business,” Hermione snapped tiredly.
Ginny started to giggle and then caught the strained look on her friend’s face. Her eyebrows crinkled in worry. “Hey Mione, you okay?” She whispered into her ear.
“I’ve been better,” Hermione whispered back.
“What’s wrong?”
“We’ll talk later,” Hermione said softly. “I don’t have detention again until Monday.”
“Ok, no problem.”
“So, did you get back alright? Snape didn’t hex you or anything did he?” Harry asked teasingly.
“No Harry, we got back just fine.” Her voice hitched just a bit but they caught it.
“Hey, you okay Mione?” Harry asked softly.
“I’m fine, Harry. I’m just really exhausted. I had quite the holiday. I’ll be okay once I catch up on some sleep, really.” Her eyes watered, thinking about everything that happened over the holiday and hoping that nobody caught it. Luckily, they all nodded. She excused herself early and ran up to the Room of Requirement. She just needed to work off her pain. If she could channel it into something useful, then the twins’ deaths wouldn’t be in vein.
“I agree,” Draco said softly as she entered the ROR. She didn’t even bother to ask. They’d mastered reading each other in the few weeks they’d had together. It wasn’t surprising that he’d known what she was thinking about. “Fancy a fly?”
“Where? I don’t want to get caught.”
“Around here of course. This is the room of requirement after all. I’m sure if we required a place to fly, it would oblige us.”
Hermione smiled at her husband. She’d gotten used to the idea that they were married now. Of course, Melody telling her to just deal with it didn’t hurt either. After all, if the sassy twin could deal with everything life had handed her, she could too. Draco was so much more than she’d ever expected. While he was an undeniably cocky bastard sometimes, he had a very affectionate side. He was willing to do just about anything for her and she found that the reverse was true. It was amazing what a few weeks away from the regular world would do.
They walked out of the room to let it reconfigure itself. A prickling feeling fell over them. They sprung backwards from each other and disillusioned themselves. Very soft footsteps ventured closer. Enhanced hearing was definitely playing off.
“Not good enough,” Snape snapped. “I could hear you halfway across the damned school.”
“Only because you’re not human,” Draco groused as they cancelled their spells. They’d gotten quite comfortable at throwing jabs at the sour professor over the holidays. He’d actually smirked a few times.
“That will stop right this instant,” Snape hissed. “In the room, now.”
The two teens cowered a bit and shuffled into the ROR. It had morphed into a replica of the pasture with the stand of trees they’d grown so used to over the holidays. It brought a tear to Hermione’s eye which she angrily swiped away. Crying wouldn’t do any good.
“Oddly appropriate,” Snape choked out. He motioned for them to sit on the weathered wooden bench, an exact replica of the one they’d sat on so many times before. He sat on the barrel beside it. “I’ve had an opportunity to read the letters that Celeste gave us before we left. She mentioned one key point that I had let slip from my mind. You’ll need new wands.”
“What? Why?” Hermione asked, completely dumbfounded.
“You’ve bonded,” Snape said like he’d already explained everything. Seeing their puzzled faces, he sighed heavily. “You’re magic has combined, your cores depend on each other now. Therefore, your wands needed this same modification. Melody had a knack for wand making and of course Harmony already saw that they’d be perfect.”
He took out a wand case and opened it, revealing their wands. Their eyes widened and they whipped out their wands from their arm holsters. “They’re transfigured sticks.” Snape said, smirking. “You don’t use them anymore so you didn’t notice the difference in feeling. These are your original wands. This is the reason I was gone so often the past week or so. It’s not very bloody easy to procure a dragon heartstring or a unicorn hair if you aren’t in the trade. However, I am a potions master so it was not impossible. Go on, take them but do NOT use them.”
They each took their respective wands and felt a swirl of magic encompass them. Their wands practically vibrated they reacted so strongly, almost wanting to join together. It was hard to resist the urge to flick them and see what happened but it was clear that it wouldn’t be prudent.
“Perfect,” Snape hissed. “Your old wand cores were split in half and bound together. Then the same was done with another unicorn hair, the twin of the one who donated the core for your wand Draco. It was combined with a halved dragon heartstring from a Swedish short-snout. I’m sure it isn’t a coincidence. The cores were braided and replaced into your original wands. The extra cores should be able to withstand the extra influx of power you two now have. Any lesser wand would burn to ash.
“This is why you must be careful. Intent will be very important from now on. There’s so much power behind your spells wandlessly that the same spells through a focus would be lethal. Imagine casting a simple aguamenti charm. A careless flick and you could flood the entire dungeons. Therefore, I know that I said we wouldn’t begin lessons until Monday night but you two must master this by then.”
It took them until the wee hours of the morning to finally dampen their spells enough to use their wands without destroying them. Their bodies were still on Texas time so it wasn’t a horrible strain but it was going to prove difficult to switch back.
“I believe we’ll stop there for now. Report back here after lunch tomorrow and we’ll continue. Cast no spells until then. You’ll still most likely kill someone if you do. Even a simple levitation spell would probably throw the object through the wall,” Snape said softly and stalked out the door.
“Well, that was fun.” Draco said dryly. “We didn’t even get a pass. Fancy that flight now?”
Hermione nodded. “It’ll be the only way we can get past Filch.” She bit her lip just as they reached the door. “You think he’ll be okay?”
“He’s been through this before, remember? Worst case scenario, he turns into the bastard we always thought he was.”
“It’s still sad,” Hermione said softly and earned a nod from Draco. They flew out the door and over to Gryffindor tower. They figured since Draco hadn’t been spotted since the beginning of the holidays, his absence would be explained away as being dedicated to his mission. If it wasn’t, he could spread the rumor himself. Hermione made sure no one was around before she transformed back into herself. Draco landed on her shoulder.
‘I believe it’s time to get a new pet. I’m sure Crookshanks has gone AWOL by now.’ She thought.
‘And what is your gorgeous pet’s new name?’ Draco thought back, happy to have a way to communicate with his wife even in animal form.
‘I think Roman would be fitting, don’t you?’
‘Why not?’ He chuckled which came out as a twitter and nuzzled his beak on her jawline.
“Abstinence!” Hermione said loudly, waking the still hung over portrait from her slumber.
“Bit late isn’t it?” The Fat Lady snapped.
“Just open up,” Hermione huffed, causing the portrait to sputter. Finally, she swung open and let her into the common room. Her stomach dropped into her shoes when she saw Harry, Ron, and Ginny sitting on the sofa waiting for her. Ron had dozed off and was snoring loudly, a bit of drool running down his face. Harry was glaring at her while Ginny regarded her with extreme curiosity and just a bit of amusement.
“Fancy seeing you here Mione,” Harry said tersely. “I was under the impression that you were asleep.”
Clearing her throat nervously, she shuffled her feet. “I woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep so I went for a walk.”
“Really?” Harry said softly but it wasn’t a question. Dread seeped into her veins. “You see, we were so worried about you that we had Lavender go in and check on you. It was quite the surprise to learn that you weren’t there. Care to try another excuse?”
Hermione’s brain froze. ‘Tell them you slept elsewhere,’ Draco hissed in the back of her mind.
“I didn’t fall asleep here,” she said softly.
“Of course not,” Harry said, annoyed. “I checked the map and you weren’t anywhere on it. As you know, it shows everywhere in the castle.”
“I wasn’t in the castle,” Hermione said, hoping she wasn’t walking into a trap.
‘Tell them you were in the Forbidden Forest,’ Draco said.
‘They’ll go ballistic!’ She protested.
‘Better they are angry at you for being a typical Gryffindor than knowing the truth.’
She growled at his inference that Gryffindors were foolhardy but couldn’t deny his logic. It was better that they be mad at her for a making a stupid move than to tell them she was practicing so she wouldn’t accidentally kill someone.
“Where in the bloody hell were you then?” Harry yelled.
Hermione winced. She hated when he got this angry. “I was in the forest. I went for a walk to clear my head and fell asleep there.”
“You WHAT?” Harry bellowed, waking Ron up from his nap.
“I didn’t mean to.”
“You could have been KILLED!” Harry screamed. “Why were you there in the first place? There are plenty of places to take a walk that don’t involve risking your life!”
‘Use me as an excuse,’ Draco whispered in her mind.
‘What?’
‘You were feeding me. Hummingbirds have to eat too you know.’
Hermione shook her head slightly and took a deep breath. She waited until Harry had screamed himself hoarse ranting about her stupidity. Ron had joined in and it had become a shouting match so she tuned them out. Ginny was simply sitting there with an apologetic look on her face. She was pretty sure she knew why Hermione had been out.
“I had to feed my bird, alright?” Hermione bit out after they had exhausted themselves.
“Your what?” Harry asked hoarsely.
She held her hand out and let Draco hop onto it. She held him up and he preened haughtily. It made her giggle because it was such a Draco move. He chirped indignantly and fluffed his tail feathers a bit. She couldn’t help but giggle again. “He’s adorable isn’t he?”
“What is that?” Ron asked, wide eyed.
“It’s a hummingbird you idiot!” Ginny snapped and quickly walked over to gently stroke the brilliant green bird on its head. “It’s a very unusual one at that,” she breathed, taking in his striking silver eyes.
Hermione smiled softly and winked so that only Ginny could see it. The redhead’s eyes widened in surprised and her mouth formed an ‘O’. She stepped back and let the boys take a look at it.
“It’s so bloody tiny!” Ron exclaimed in amazement. “Wait a tick, what are you doing with a hummingbird?”
“Sam gave him to me. His name is Roman.” She felt Draco’s approval at this statement. The tiny bird on her finger jumped up and flew to her cheek to nuzzle it and then back to her finger. She giggled. “He’s very affectionate but he needs nectar to eat and I didn’t have any. There are plenty of flowers in the forest so I took him out there. I guess I dozed off.”
“That was a bloody stupid move Hermione,” Harry said softly as he inspected the tiny bird. “What would have happened if there had been a Death Eater lurking in there? You know the forest doesn’t have the same protections as the castle.”
“I’m sorry okay? It was stupid and I’m sorry. What more do you want?” Hermione said tiredly. The day was catching up with her.
“I want you to promise me you’ll be more careful.” Harry said.
“You’re one to talk,” Hermione snorted and Harry had the decency to blush. “Don’t worry Harry. I’ll be more careful from now on, alright?”
Harry nodded. “Thank you.”
“Good. Now, if you guys don’t mind, I’m still rather tired. Good night.” She turned and trudged upstairs. She didn’t miss the sound of Ginny following her or the boys whispering doubts to her story. She sighed sadly, thinking she would most likely never regain their full trust. She had to try though, for everyone’s sake.
Once she was through the door to her dormitory room, Ginny ushered her to her bed and hastily put up a silencing charm. “Now you tell me the truth Hermione. What’s wrong?”
She sat Draco down on the bed and drew the curtains around them just in case someone woke up. He transformed back, causing Ginny to flinch.
“A bit jumpy there, are we Red?” He teased.
“You startled me you big blond oaf. I thought you were a fox.”
“I was,” He said with a shrug and then transformed into the fox and back again.
“Wicked,” she breathed.
“Very.”
“Now, what’s going on?” Ginny said, switching tracks again. “Why does Mione look like her best friend died.”
“Because she did,” Draco said softly and reached out to embrace his wife who had started sobbing silently.
“What?” Ginny asked in horror.
“Melody and Harmony,” Hermione croaked out. “They died yesterday.”
Ginny slapped her hands over her mouth and shook her head in dismay. “No,” she breathed.
“Yes,” Draco said softly. “They were attacked and we were unable to save them.”
“I’m so sorry.” Ginny laid a hand on Hermione’s shoulder.
Hermione drew back and wiped her eyes, swearing that she’d be stronger from now on. “They gave us instructions on how to defeat You Know Who before they died. Their last wishes were that we carry them out and that is exactly what we’re going to do. We’ve been learning how to reuse our wands after our bonding. That’s what we were doing tonight. We’ll be doing it again tomorrow and then we’ll start back with detention on Monday.”
“I-Did they say what they saw about Harry?” She said, almost apologetically.
Hermione nodded. “You’ll both need to be trained. I suspect that you’ll both be gaining either a lot of detentions or a tutoring session with Professor Snape. I’m going to have to drill Harry on occlumency. He’s still too weak. Could you help me with that?”
“Of course,” Ginny said with a nod taking everything in. “It really is good to see you again Mione and I’m sorry I didn’t know. How is Professor Snape taking it?”
“I have a feeling that he’s going to be twice the bastard he was before,” Draco said dryly.
“Wonderful,” Ginny said, rolling her eyes. “Well, I know you two have some things you’d rather be doing so I’ll go. Sleep well.”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Draco was right. Snape was practically the devil incarnate their first week back to school. They’d learned to use their wands correctly but he’d somehow spread the word that they were unstable and they hadn’t been called on in class. They were, however, drilled mercilessly on the information they were supposed to learn over the holiday break. Fortunately, they’d already learned the assigned reading and more so they were able to regurgitate the answers easily.
Even the other students noticed just how harsh Snape had been on the two. It was completely out of character for Snape to turn on his own godson but their animosity was well documented over the past few months. The Slytherins especially had seen several carefully staged arguments between the pair. They knew Snape was doing it so they would be above any lingering suspicions but it was bloody annoying.
Detentions the first week were split in between simple wand exercises, reading over the book of notes that the twins had left for them, and going over the potion that Merlin had written down in the journal. They were determined not to lose another person. It was exhausting and tedious work but they weren’t about to give up, if only to honor the dead.
Harry also had his first lesson back with Dumbledore as well. He was appointed to obtain a crucial memory from Slughorn about horcruxes. Hermione had never heard of them but she had a sickening feeling that she knew what they were. Melody and Harmony never named what exactly it was that Voldemort had done by putting a piece of his soul in Harry but she just had a hunch that it was a horcrux. She had convinced him to start up his occlumency lessons again in addition to hounding him about Slughorn and cautioning him to be careful.
He’d proven her right when he blundered his first attempt. He’d done alright by buttering up the walrus-like man by making a gutsy move and handing in a bezoar instead of an actual poison antidote in potions class but had jumped too quick and scared the potions master. Hermione was furious but hid it as best she could, instead drilling him mercilessly on his occlumency. He’d improved a great bit but he still wasn’t iron clad yet. Dumbledore had managed to schedule him and Ginny for tutoring sessions three times a week at the same time she had detention. Draco would be working on Merlin’s potion at the same time as well, under the guise of a special project for extra credit. She hoped they could pull it all off.
Monday rolled around all too soon. She was actually dreading her class with Snape. She and Draco hadn’t been able to sleep together all week because not only had his friends become suspicious of his whereabouts, but also because Harry had taken to studying that damned Marauder’s map every time he got the chance. She shuddered when she remembered last Sunday night, the night they’d almost been caught.
Draco had each of her limbs tied to a bedpost and was thoroughly ravaging her. His teeth and fangs scraped in various sensitive places sending her senses into overdrive. She loved it really and he loved making her come undone. They’d taken every precaution they could think of; including enchanting all of her roommates into a deep sleep so they wouldn’t be disturbed or seen.
Finally, he took mercy on her and sheathed himself deep inside, making both of them feel complete. They never felt as calm as when they were like this. Draco had begged her more than once to sneak away with him for the entire day but between their friends and lessons, it was impossible to even entertain the idea.
He thrust into her with all his might like a man possessed. He desired nothing but to crawl inside of her at that moment and she welcomed it. Grinning when he placed his arm beside her head, she scratched him with her fangs. He let out a guttural groan and begged her to do it again. She was happy to comply but was surprised to feel his fangs scrape her collar bone at the same time. They orgasmed together, emitting a bright flash of light. It was a good thing they’d placed a light blocking spell on the door.
Untying her with a flick of his fingers, Draco sunk down beside her on the bed in sated bliss. “That never gets old,” he sighed and kissed her passionately. She returned it just as ardently. They lay back down, almost asleep when a pounding on the door woke them up. Draco sprung from the bed, wandlessly cleaning and dressing himself as well as his wife in seconds. He switched back to his hummingbird form just as Ginny came careening through the door.
“Hey!” She hissed, trying not to look at the bed with the curtains drawn. Hermione pulled them back in irritation.
“What is it Ginny?” She snapped.
“Harry knows!” She said frantically. “He saw him on that bloody map of his and sent Ron to go get McGonagall. I told him I’d come up here and check everything out but we’re in big trouble.”
“Shite,” Hermione spat and stalked over to the window, throwing it open. “Love you, be careful,” she breathed as Draco hopped off her arm and took flight.
“Go tell Harry you saw something lurking by the window but you couldn’t tell what it was,” she said softly.
Ginny nodded and raced back down the stairs. Hermione opened all her curtains up, released the sleeping enchantments from her roommates, cancelled all their privacy spells, and crawled into bed to feign sleep. A very angry McGonagall came bursting into the room minutes later, waking everyone up. Hermione played dumb beautifully and convinced her Head of House that she’d been sound asleep.
Since Harry wasn’t about to tell the professor how he knew Malfoy was lurking in the Gryffindor girl’s dormitory, she took fifteen points from him for sounding a false alarm and warned him off any further nonsense. Harry slunk back to bed but he still checked the map religiously, now convinced that Malfoy had it out for Hermione as well.
They hadn’t wanted to risk getting caught again and decided to sleep in their own dorms during the week. She’d finally had it and grabbed Harry’s map on Friday after their last class. He couldn’t monitor them so they made up for their absence over the weekend. She was still sore and very tired and didn’t think she had the patience to deal with a very bitter and angry professor on top of it.
“You look like shite Hermione,” Ron said tactlessly as he shoved another banger in his mouth at breakfast.
“Why thank you for that assessment, Ronald,” she snapped irritably. She wasn’t in the mood for him or anyone really this morning. “Do you think it is possible to eat without showing half the great hall exactly what you’re consuming this morning?”
“Wha?” He asked, spilling some of his food out of his mouth.
“Ugh! You’re such a pig Ronald!” She spat and then flounced out of the great hall, not even bothering to eat. Draco broke into her thoughts and asked her to meet him in his favorite alcove. It was the one he’d dragged her into so many times in the past few months.
“Hey,” he whispered softly when he reached her. “I’m sorry you’re so tired sweetheart,” he said earnestly. “Still, you’ve got to eat no matter how revolting the Weasel is.” He wrinkled his nose in disgust as he produced a small plate filled with a scone, a few bangers, and a few slices of apple and banana.
Hermione sighed and thanked him as she scarfed down her breakfast. He conjured a cup full of steaming black liquid but it didn’t smell like tea. “Is that coffee?”
“Yes ma’am. Celeste sent some in my trunk along with a note that said she figured we’d need it.”
They’d taken to practically living on coffee while in America since they had to cram so much learning into so short of a time and Snape had refused to get them hooked on pepper up potions. She took a sip and hummed in delight. It was perfect and she slowly woke up. “Thank you,” she whispered and gave him a soft kiss. He smiled and pulled her around so she leaned into his chest as they slid to the floor. She snuggled into him as she sipped her coffee. “Gods I miss this.”
They’d decided to ignore each other completely for the duration of the year. Since they could speak with each other freely now, they had no need to cause a scene every time they wanted to talk. Still, Harry had made good use of that damnable map and looked at it every five minutes until she’d stolen it, finally having enough of not being able to see her husband. He’d almost become like a drug. She knew it was their magic that made them want to stay near each other but she’d genuinely missed the blonde rogue.
“I miss this too.” He kissed her temple. “Have you figured out a way to erase us permanently from that bloody map?”
“No,” she huffed as she took another sip of the sweet ambrosia. “I can’t just delete us or he would notice that I wasn’t next to him on it. I’ve been working on a charm that we can activate when we don’t want to be found.”
“And the reason you haven’t shared this with me is…”
“It’s not finished yet,” she said softly.
He snorted. “Like I’m going to hold that against you. Maybe I can help.”
“Maybe.” Hermione nodded and gently lowered the wall that was protecting her spell in progress.
“Ah, I see. It’s a cross between a notice-me-not and a disillusionment spell. You’re really brilliant, you know that?” Draco said in astonishment.
She smirked. “I am the brightest witch of my age.”
“Not so bright that you remember to eat though,” he admonished.
“I’m sorry. My nerves are shot and I couldn’t stomach looking at Ron’s atrocious table manners this morning.”
“Yes, Weasley would make any iron stomach weak. Does he have a tapeworm by chance? He manages to consume half the food at the table and is still lanky.”
“I think that’s just a Weasley trait. They never seem to gain an ounce.” She huffed in annoyance. “All I have to do is look at a sweet and I swear I gain a stone.”
“You look bloody gorgeous and you know it. There isn’t an ounce of fat on you and I happen to know that you have an amazing figure, having perused it many times myself.”
“You are a bloody perv, you know that?” Hermione giggled.
“No. I just happen to fancy my wife. Is that a crime?”
“I should hope you would fancy your wife,” Hermione said sarcastically. “You’ll be shackled to her for a very long time.”
“I’ll be the happiest prisoner in the world,” he said, nuzzling her just below her ear which he knew was her weak spot. She melted into his embrace every time.
“So, tonight is the first lesson with Harry and Ginny. I wonder what Professor Snape has planned?”
“I’d imagine you’ll be doing something disgusting. You’re supposed to be in detention after all and godfather seems to take a sadistic pleasure in torturing us here lately.”
“He’s paying you back for all those vampire jokes,” Hermione said sourly. “I imagine he’s punishing us because we saw the man beneath the mask. I miss that man.” She sighed wistfully and took another sip of her coffee.
“Me too,” Draco said softly. “They brought out the best in him.”
Hermione’s breath hitched at the thought of the twins. It was still so fresh and raw in her memory. They’d thrown caution to the wind to help and had been repaid with death. She could still see the tiny smirk Melody would get when she was teasing her bat or the twinkle in Harmony’s eye when she’d say something ambiguous that caused Snape to mutter about her being a harpy.
“I miss them so much,” she breathed. “How is that possible? We only knew them for a few weeks.”
“Yes but they knew every detail about us. They got under our skin and refused to let go. I imagine they do that with everyone. It’s hard to resist someone you don’t have to explain yourself to,” he said sadly as he kissed her temple again. He just couldn’t do that enough lately so he was making up for it now.
She nodded. “Breakfast is almost over. Time to head to hell, I mean Defense Against the Dark Arts,” she said cheekily. “I promised Harry I’d give his map back today. Hopefully, he’s not too mad at me. I just got so bloody tired of him checking it obsessively and making up wild accusations of you trying to murder me in my sleep.”
“Maybe la petite mort,” Draco said slyly causing Hermione to flush.
“Go on you,” she grumbled and pushed him out of the alcove as soon as it was clear.

Defense Against the Dark Arts had been a nightmare. Snape was even surlier than usual, assigning two feet of parchment on the proper use of a petrificus totalus spell after Seamus had petrified only his partner’s left arm and right foot. Thankfully, she and Draco had managed to escape his wrath that day. She knew he was still grieving which made her want to cry. Draco had reminded her several times that it would do no good other than to earn herself an actual detention.
They kept up a playful banter in the back of their minds all day long which she was thankful for. It kept her mind off the baleful looks Harry had been shooting her all day as he ducked behind a statue or stepped into a classroom to check his precious map. Ron, on the other hand, had practically been walking around on eggshells around her all day since she’d snapped and hexed his mouth shut after History of Magic. He’d made the mistake of asking her what crawled into her knickers and she’d had it. He had to go to Madam Pomfrey to reverse it.
Ginny had been her rock. The spunky girl understood her grouchy mood and her general melancholy attitude since she’d been back. She’d had a long discussion with her about the twins. She’d not told her about their special abilities, instead regaling her with stories about how they’d teased the professor mercilessly. She had told her that Snape had saved Melody’s life when she was still a teenager but that was as far as she went. Some secrets were sacred. Still, the redhead hadn’t questioned her any further, merely leant her a shoulder to cry on when Draco’s wasn’t available.
Now she was headed to her first detention where Ginny and Harry would be present. She wasn’t worried about Ginny at all, having served a month’s worth of detentions with her friend prior to the holidays. It was Harry she was worried about. He’d become almost obsessed with Draco since he’d come back, convinced that his prior illness was a ploy.
She wasn’t about to correct him but she did wish she could tell him the truth. She desperately wanted to but every time she cracked through his occlumency walls, she realized just how precious her secret was. If Harry were to slip an inch, Voldemort could pin her and Draco down and use them for horrible acts. She shuddered at the thought and felt Draco’s responding shiver. He knew all too well the lengths the Dark Lord would go to get what he wanted.
“Hey Mione,” Harry said softly as she rounded the corner to the DADA classroom. “What are you doing here?”
“Detention all year, remember?” She answered timidly.
“Oh yea, for hexing Ron that day in the Great Hall, right?” Harry said, scratching the side of his nose.
She blushed and nodded. Harry chuckled and she couldn’t help but smile slightly. He was still the same Harry, even if he was being an incredible pain in her arse. Ginny dashed towards them, skidding to a stop just as the clock chimed eight. Hermione shook her head in amusement as she knocked on the door.
“Enter,” Snape called curtly and she pushed inside, wincing when she saw the open hatred clear on the professor’s face. Noticing her wince, he changed his expression to one of indifference and stood up from behind his desk. He flicked his wand to shut, lock, and silence the door.
“No doubt, Miss Granger, that you know this isn’t merely a tutoring session for these two. This is, however, your detention. Your assignment tonight will be to assist Mr. Malfoy. He’s working with an experimental potion for extra credit and finds himself in need of some ingredients that I haven’t had time to prepare. I will hear absolutely no arguments about it, is that clear?” His voice was dead as it had been since they’d returned but she heard the seriousness in his tone.
“Yes sir,” she said softly as she ducked her head and walked over across the classroom to help Draco.
‘Did you really need my help tonight?’ She thought to him.
‘I do, actually. I’m having trouble working out this last equation.’
‘You’re brilliant at arithmancy. What’s the problem?’
‘The problem is that the last few symbols have been smudged.’
She nodded and grabbed the book, sitting down on a stool and biting her lip in contemplation. Snape’s words drifted in and droned on in the background.
“Before we begin Potter, how far along have you come in your occlumency skills?”
“They’re fine,” Harry snapped.
“Really,” Snape drawled. “Let’s see then, shall we? LEGILIMENS!”
Harry groaned and panted with exertion but succumbed to the spell after a few moments.
Snape tsked. “My, my Potter. I was unaware that you had such an unhealthy obsession with another student. I advise that you drop it.”
“What I think about is my own business,” Harry spat.
“You’ll find that it is my business Potter, especially if that obsession interferes with my lessons,” Snape hissed. “Miss Weasley, I trust that you are at least a halfway decent opponent?”
“Yes sir. I’ve been practicing every night.”
“Very well. Let’s put it to a practical test then. LEGILIMENS!” He yelled with even more force than he had at Harry.
She merely squeaked a moment before she managed to throw the spell off and send it hurdling back to him.
“An improvement,” Snape said approvingly. “You need to work on the next level, letting me in while still blocking me from seeing everything.”
“Yes sir,” Ginny panted from the amount of force she’d had to use.
“Now, over the holidays I came upon a bump in the road, as it were, to your training. Potter, you will of course need to learn separation but it has come to my attention that you will also need to learn dual casting which can take talented person years to master.”
Draco snorted. He and Hermione had managed it in two weeks. Unfortunately, his outburst didn’t go unnoticed.
“Do you think it wise that Malfoy be here for this?” Harry asked tersely.
“Seeing as how he’s mastered everything you’re trying to learn, I’m not the least bit concerned.”
“But!”
“That is enough Potter,” Snape spat hatefully. “I am the professor and you will not question my authority or my judgment. If you have a problem with it, I suggest you take it up with the Headmaster. Now, may we continue?”
Harry glared at him hatefully but nodded. Ginny merely shook her head sadly, noticing the way Hermione winced at the professor’s spiteful tone. She glanced over to see that Snape was instructing Harry on the basics of separating his magic so she crept over to the back table where Hermione and Draco were working.
“What are you two working on?” She whispered softly, causing the two to jump. They’d been so engrossed with their problem that they’d tuned everything else out.
“We’re trying to recreate an old potion,” Hermione explained. “It’s just that the formula has been smudged so it’s proving rather difficult.”
Ginny nodded. “Can I have a look?”
Draco and Hermione debated a few minutes before gingerly handing her the book. Ginny squinted her eyes and then cocked her head. “Isn’t that the rune for a full moon?”
Draco took the book back and copied Ginny’s movement. “I think it might be! Thanks Red!”
“Miss Weasley!” Snape barked. “Unless you’d like to earn yourself an actual detention, I suggest you get over here right now.”
“Yes sir,” she wheezed and ran over to him, ducking her head apologetically.
“Now, while Potter is mangling his way through another pointless exercise, I want you to separate your magic and then cast in tandem. You’ll start with a completely light intent spell, then a dark one, and see how your spells are affected. Then, when you think you’ve mastered that, I want you to try and balance it on your own. Begin.” He said softly as he stalked back over to his desk.
Harry had managed to make himself glow green for a second but then had become too excited and lost his concentration. Snape barked at him to get his head on straight and then picked up one of Melody’s journals to read. This was the last one she’d sent, instructions on how to train the last phenom pair.
Alright Sev, we’ve come to the part of the journal where I annoy you. I’m sure you knew it was coming. These last few words of advice are for Hermione and subsequently Draco. This part of the journal is spelled to her signature, courtesy of your lovely soul mate. I’m sure you’ll send her your thanks later.
All you have to do is simply swallow that enormous ego of yours and ask Hermione for her help. Oh I do hope there is an audience present. Go on, ask her over. Tell her you’d like her help. Have her place her left wrist, you know the place, on the page and say ‘Gryffindor’s rule.’ She has to read it first before anyone else can. I can practically see the smoke coming out of your ears Sev! Still, it is imperative that she read this. Do it for me please, as a last request?
Love you Bat,
The Bitch
Snape hissed loudly and slammed his hand on the desk. His children immediately fell to their knees and cowered. He’d forgotten his pull on them momentarily. Sighing, he dashed over to each one and released them from their compulsion. Then, after yelling at Potter to pay attention to his spell work, he called Hermione over.
“Miss Granger,” he said tersely. “It seems as if I need your assistance for a minute.”
Hermione cocked her head in curiosity and walked over to her professor. He swore vehemently under his breath but she still heard every word. It made her blush.
“It would seem,” he continued under his breath, “that a certain pain in the arse has decided to haunt me from her grave. Could you please place the Celtic knot on your left wrist on this page and recite the words –“ he snorted in disgust, “Gryffindor’s rule.”
Hermione bit back a laugh and took the book. She read over the last journal entry and smiled softly. Melody had still gotten in one last jab at her bat. She followed the instructions and watched as the words bled onto the paper.
Hey Hermione,
What up chica? Seriously though, if you’re reading this, it means I’m no longer around to torture the poor bat. Do me a favor though. Don’t let him sink back beneath the mask. He’s such a great guy, it would be a shame to lose him again.
I’m sorry we had to leave you so soon. I write this as I’m getting ready to go to the club where I know I will spend the last moments of my life surrounded by my loved ones. Severus is closer to me than a brother, obvious reasons notwithstanding. Therefore, you are my family as well. I feel like I’ve known you all my life and yet I wish we could have gotten to know each other better. You and Draco are the children I’ll never have. I see great things in the future for the both of you.
My last piece of advice to you isn’t something you can plan for. It isn’t a visible weapon you can hold in your hand or a strategy you can obsess over. It’s merely something I read in the bible. Us dying people get rather maudlin and read things like that while contemplating life. Still, I’m sure this passage was written just for this moment.
1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast,[b] but do not have love, I gain nothing.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Paul was brilliant, wasn’t he? I don’t know if you are religious or not but he wrote the truth. Love is the most powerful force on earth. Merlin himself said that as I’m sure you’ve read in his journal. So, my last message to you is that if there is love, you will prevail. Old Moldy Shorts doesn’t believe in love. He’s never experienced it, never received it, and doesn’t ever care to but it is the one thing that defeated him before and the one thing that will put the final nail in his coffin. Never doubt that.
And so, after I leave you with that marvelous epiphany, I wish you luck. Give it your all sweetheart. Never lose sight of what’s important but also remember, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy!
Love you kid,
The crazy blind lady
Hermione sat the book down gently and walked over to the work bench with Draco, trying to hide the tears that were cascading down her face. She noticed that he was weeping softly as well. It was a beautiful message and put everything in perspective.
Severus picked up the book and read Melody’s last thoughts. He closed his eyes in pain and placed the book down on the desk. “That’s enough for tonight Potter, Weasley. Practice this whenever you can but not in view of others. Dismissed.”
Confused but glad to leave, Harry bolted out the door. Ginny lingered only for a moment but saw Hermione’s heaving shoulders so she left quietly.
When the door closed again, Severus Snape finally let the tears fall. He wept for so many things, for his bad decisions, Lily, and the twins who’d lost their lives so recently. He’d failed them all. He didn’t know how long he was left to his thoughts before he felt warm arms lift him from the desk. Another set embraced him as if he were a cherished possession. He was sure he didn’t deserve that kind of treatment.
He opened his eyes to find Hermione clinging to him, weeping freely. Draco was behind her, one arm around her and the other resting on his shoulder. Silent tears fell down the boy’s cheeks. Hating himself for his weakness, Severus gave in and let them embrace him. They would be the only ones who would ever see him like this but he so longed for human contact. No words were spoken as the trio finally broke apart. The couple cleaned up their things and silently left him to his thoughts.
AN: Hello everyone! A big thanks to Frosty for reviewing. I'll admit I did giggle a bit at the thought of Snape in leather pants. Did I scare everyone else off? What if I promise to keep Snape in his regular bat wear? Well, if you didn't like the last chapter, I'm sure this one went down sour but I had to do it. *apologizes to her OCs* So, if you're still with me, hit the review button and tell me all about it. You can even tell me stories about your animals or share your New Year's resolutions. Mine this year is to finish this story as soon as possible! As always, let me know how I'm doing and if you catch any errors.
