Here's the next chapter!
Hermione had been feeling horrible in the last few days. She had been completely sick and felt weak, a situation she took out on whoever dared to go near her.
"I HATE this!", she had screamed at Lucius as he had attempted to coax her to eat some soup. The two elves who had been assigned to take care of her trembled and lowered their ears but Hermione didn't even notice. "I can't stand this! Why do I feel so weak? This is worse than the dungeons!"
To his credit, Lucius had simply nodded and held her hand, gently taking the wand she held in a death grip and stroking her hair when she finally collapsed against him in tears.
He was worried. She had been having mood swings and had lost her appetite but refused to go to the hospital.
He had tried to convince her again yesterday, only to end up facing a giant cobra as she used the spell to show him just how displeased she was at that suggestion.
Of course he had made it vanish but the thought that, in her current weak state, she should not have been able to accomplish that spell nagged at his mind. "She's a powerful witch. That's why", he had murmured to himself later that night as he watched her in deep sleep, her face serene.
"But just how powerful?" the voice in his head hissed and he couldn't stop himself from smirking as he brushed a strand of hair back from her face and she leaned into his touch, even in her sleep. He loved her and she loved him. The thought could still make his heart race.
It was the next morning, after four days of morning sickness that she began to doubt it was simply food poisoning or a stomach bug. She could tell Lucius' thoughts hadn't travelled down the same path as hers had and she didn't want to tell him her suspicion until she was positive.
"Lucius", she hesitated and felt him turn around to completely face her from his chair by the bedroom window. Of course he had detected the hesitance in her voice, despite her best attempt to cover it up. She wasn't sure if his ability to judge the tone of her voice was because of the love bond or just because he knew her so well.
"What is it pet?" he asked, his eyes studying her face as she fidgeted with the bed covers under which she was nestled. She still felt weak but she shook it off and sat up in bed. She heard him put down the papers he had been working on and walk towards her, sitting down next to her and placing his arm around her waist.
She rested against his shoulder, grateful for the support but gently stopped him when he leaned down for a kiss. "I don't want to get you sick…if this…if its catching" but despite her weak protest Lucius gave her a soft peck on the lips, chuckling at her worry. If her sickness was what she suspected though, Hermione reminded herself, Lucius would have nothing to fear. It wouldn't be catching, that's for sure!
"I think…I'll go to the hospital today", she whispered to him, her voice hoarse. He pulled her onto his lap, ignoring her weak arguments and held her against him, staring into her eyes. They seemed large as they stood out against the unhealthy colour her skin had taken in the last few days.
"Thank Merlin for that", he whispered to her, brushing a kiss against the top of her head as she gave a weak smile.
"What made you change your mind?" he asked, his lips curving in a smile as she snuggled into him with a yawn. She felt so tired all the time!
"I just think…I should get it checked out. Maybe I can take something stronger than the potion you bought". He had bought an all-purpose potion but if she was pregnant, as Hermione suspected, she would need specific potions to keep the baby healthy.
That would explain all her symptoms too. The more powerful the parents' magic was, the more magic the child needed to be surrounded by to ensure they developed properly. Hermione assumed she had been pregnant when she had gotten stuck in the dungeons and she was worried that the deprivation of magic there, might have a huge impact on the child.
It wouldn't do to worry Lucius though! "I'll take one of the elves with me if that's okay…and Ginny". She wanted Ginny there because she had been with her through her last two pregnancies and Hermione was certain that, like Molly Weasley, Ginny would be excited at the thought of her having another child.
Lucius frowned at her. "Potter's wife?" but swallowed down any objections when he saw the glare she directed his way. He chuckled and gave her another kiss. He had only had minimal physical contact with her for the last four days, partially due to her insisting he would get sick but mostly because he had been afraid he would make her condition worse. He hadn't even kissed her until today and he craved her taste.
Lucius took a deep breath. Holding her like this wasn't helping him at all but she seemed so comfortable. "Are you sure you don't want me to go with you?" he asked, concern evident in his voice. Hermione pressed a soft kiss to the base of his throat, chuckling slightly when he groaned.
Her sickness had kept her from missing his touch too much but for him it must be torture and she probably wasn't helping.
"I'll be fine. Don't worry", she wrapped an arm around his neck, pulling herself up until she was eye-level with him. "What do you feel like doing right now?" she smirked at him as he narrowed his eyes at her.
She was teasing him, the little minx! "Wouldn't you like to know?" he murmured back, catching her by surprise when he kissed her, his lips warm over hers. She wrapped her arms around him and pulled him closer, unconsciously pressing her body closer to his. He moaned into her mouth as he threaded one hand through her hair, holding her as close to him as humanely possible before pulling back, both of them breathless.
"You're not feeling well", he murmured to her as she protested, this time at the loss of contact. "Once you visit the hospital…we'll see how it goes".
Before she or her warm body that was pressed against him in the most arousing way, could make him lose his stand on the matter, he gently placed her back under the bed covers. With a soft kiss to the top of her head, he stood up and left the room, saying, "I'll give you privacy to get ready. Take Beau with you. He's the most reliable".
She smiled at the thought of the small elf, briefly forgetting her frustration with Lucius and prepared to get ready, albeit slowly due to her fragile state.
By the time she was done, Beau was waiting for her outside the door, eager to "Escort Mistress. Beau good elf!"
Hermione had shaken her head in amusement and allowed Beau to apparate her to Ginny's. She had already sent her an owl to let her know she was coming.
She had barely popped into the living room (she was thankful for Beau as she didn't think she had the strength to apparate herself!) when Ginny came hurtling down the stairs, behind her an equally excited Lily.
"Hermione! I haven't seen you in ages!" she exclaimed, nearly crushing her in a hug. Hermione leaned down to hug Lily and stood upright to Ginny's scrutiny. "Why are you so pale? What's wrong?"
Hermione gave her a small smile before looking around to make sure Harry wasn't in sight. "He's at work", Ginny stated and noticing Hermione's look, she took her by the hand and led her to the kitchen.
Lily followed, curious to know what was going on and Hermione smiled at the little girl before confessing her suspicions to Ginny.
She had barely finished when Ginny exclaimed, her face aglow with excitement, "That's brilliant Hermione! Lucius will be so happy!"
Ginny's excitement and confidence were contagious and Hermione smiled before adding, "I'm not sure though Ginny. We need to check before I tell him".
Hermione knew Lucius loved her but she wasn't sure how he would react to this news, if it was true. She kept remembering the dream she had the day she had first told Rose of her affair. If Lucius was even half as happy as that dream had indicated…no. She wouldn't think of it. It was just a dream after all.
Ginny smiled and gave Lily quick instructions on staying home alone. At Lily's serene smile, almost identical to the one Ginny used to use when she was little and about to get into trouble, she began to have second thoughts.
Lily was a lot like her in character and, even without her Uncle George helping her, managed to drive her mum crazy. Ginny sympathized with Molly now, for all the trouble she must have gone through when Ginny was Lily's age and just as reckless.
"I'll call Ron to babysit…"she trailed off, giving Hermione a glance of apology.
"I don't mind", Hermione responded, "Just don't tell Lucius". Ginny chuckled at her dry tone and proceeded to lead them to the front room where she called Ron through the floo.
"He's not working today", she added as an explanation to Hermione. They barely greeted Ron as he arrived before Beau apparated them both to the Hospital.
"That was rude Beau", Hermione gently admonished but the elf shook his head and responded with, "Master does not wish for Mistress to talk to red-head Auror. He commands Beau".
Hermione just stared at him, aghast at the name he had called Ron while Ginny burst into laughter in the background. "Alright then", Hermione shook her head and proceeded to the front reception, followed by Ginny and Beau.
It only took a few moments for everything to be sorted and for Hermione to be examined. The old witch who examined Hermione reminded her of a female version of Dumbledore (age-wise) as she turned to her with a smile saying, "Congratulations!"
Ginny had hugged Hermione and was already gushing about baby clothes and colour schemes she might try for the nursery when the smile on the old witch's face abruptly vanished.
Hermione followed her gaze and saw it firmly locked to the ring on her finger. "You're a Malfoy?" she asked, her voice tense as she waited for Hermione's silent nod of ascent.
"I'm married to Lucius Malfoy. Why?" The witch stared at her then the ring then at the protective elf who stood beside her, glaring, and finally gave her a small smile. "Oh no reason. I'm sure you're both very excited about the baby". Hermione felt she was holding something back from her but she didn't press the witch any further.
As they turned to leave, the witch caught Hermione's hand and whispered, low enough so only she could hear, "That's a beautiful…and powerful ring. Many powerful witches have worn it. Be careful".
Hermione nodded, confused. Whoever had worn it last, had scared the old witch, that much was apparent. Lucius said his mother had given it to him but…had she worn it herself?
She would have to ask.
She dropped Ginny off before Beau took her back to the Manor. Lucius was waiting for her, pacing the floor with worry. He took her into his arms the moment she arrived in the room.
"Lucius!" she exclaimed, laughing as he checked her over to make sure she was fine. "I had Beau with me, remember?"
"Yes. And Beau sent me a message saying a certain Weasley was around?" Hermione could hear the jealousy in his voice and chuckled, pressing a kiss to his lips as she saw him scowl.
"Ron was there but I barely spoke to him, thanks to Beau whisking me off", she frowned slightly but Lucius looked relieved and gave the elf a smile and nod of approval, leaving him in the seventh heaven of delight at having "pleased Master".
"Anyway", she took a deep breath and watched Lucius' eyes move back to her. She could get lost in his eyes. So grey…like a stormy sea. It held slight confusion now but still held her gaze, waiting. "I have something I want to tell you…"she trailed off. She wasn't sure what he would think.
"Mmhm?"Lucius led her to the couch in the front room, keeping his arm around her as she sat down.
"I'm…I'm pregnant", she said it quickly and stared at him, waiting for his reaction. He stared at her for one long minute, stunned speechless. Then his expression changed to one of concern. "How do you feel about it?"
Hermione gave him a glare. That was not the response she had hoped for.
"How do you think I feel?" she huffed out, "I'm thrilled but obviously you don't share the sentiment!" Lucius watched her as she spoke.
She was so beautiful and now…she was carrying his child. He had never taken any interest in Narcissa's pregnancy with Draco, thrilled to be having a son but he didn't have any emotion towards the woman who was his mother.
With Hermione, it was different. He had been afraid that she might not want it. They had never discussed children and she already had two with Weasley. But she obviously wanted it as much as he did.
She was trying to get up now, to leave before she began to cry. She had really thought he would be happy…maybe not as excited as she was but happy. Was that too much to ask for?
She had barely risen before she found his arms around her waist, pulling her onto his lap and against his chest as he nuzzled her neck. "Lucius!", she cried, exasperated.
"Did you really think I wouldn't be thrilled?" his voice was husky and her skin tingled where his breath touched. She turned around to face him, placing a hand against his cheek, watching as he leaned into her touch, a soft smile adorning his face.
His eyes held a trace of light-hope, she thought. He really wanted this child. Maybe even more than she did. A laugh bubbled out of her, causing Lucius to pull her in for a deep kiss.
"I love you. I love everything about you and this child…", he placed a hand on Hermione's flat stomach, the warmth of it seeping in through her shirt and making her shiver. His delighted chuckle told her he had noticed her reaction as he pressed a kiss to her cheek. "I will love this child and any children we have together. I love you", he finished off and Hermione nodded, blaming her hormones for the tears dripping down her face.
"I love you", she whispered back, giving herself over to his passionate embrace as he pulled her in for another kiss. Beau smiled to himself as he silently popped back to the kitchen, unseen by the two lovers. "Beau has big news", he announced to the elves as they gathered around him.
Hermione would have a whole bunch of helpers for the next nine months!
