Title: A Godfather's duty

Summary: Lily's dead, Severus is in mourning. He contemplates what to do with the rest of his life when fate takes a hand.
A/n: Thank you for all of the ideas. I hope these last five chapters wrap this story up properly...
Here is Harry's first mind healer exam...

Using Legilimency on young children was an especially delicate procedure and not recommended, however in Harry’s case it was very imperative.
Memories were known to begin to form between seven and nine months for magical children whose brains mature at a slightly faster rate then Muggles.
Harry was barely fifteen months when he disappeared and had spent three weeks in the abusive care of Muggles caretakers at the Jersey Orphanage.
Severus held Harry in his arms, “I know this is important but is it necessary? Isn’t he too young? Can’t you just use my memories?”
Ted sighed, “That would be almost hearsay Severus. We already discuss this.”
“He’s a baby…he can’t possible be able to show you what you need.” Severus complained.
“Yes, his memory is developing and he doesn’t have the words to tell us. He can remember impressions like so-and-so scares me, Miss yells and the like. He’s already showing signs of post-traumatic stress, he refuses to be separated from you and if he has to be, he only calms if he’s with his sister. She likely reminds him of the womb and the sense of being safe. He doesn’t do well with loud noises and he is fearful of females, likely he was more mistreated by a woman. He cries quietly but doesn’t let you know when he’s hungry or needs to be changed because he’s been frightened beyond belief. He may take longer to potty-train then his sister. You may have to wait until your twins are ready before Harry is. He still has nightmares if he isn’t with Cora right?”
Severus flinched, “I know it’s just that I want to believe that he’ll be okay, if he doesn’t have any real memories then he’ll recover faster. I heard growing up that kids are young and they’ll forget about it.”
“Have you?” Ted retorted.
Severus sighed, “No.”
“Then it’s foolish to expect that of Harry. He needs comforting activities, read to him, let him play, if he’s forgotten then remind him. The more interaction with children his age will help but only one on one mind. You need to keep him to a schedule; meals, naps, baths and bedtime must take place at the same time every day. Solstice is coming up, decide what sort of celebration you’ll plan to have for the next ten to fourteen years. He’ll need as much love, patience and affection as possible. Absolutely no arguments, yelling or anything that could be considered violent at all.” Ted chided.
“Alright.” Severus whispered into Harry’s hair.
“Like I was saying, Harry’s mind stored emotional and physical experience but he didn’t store it with the sort of interpretation that you or I would. I’ll examine what is there and then I’ll have to review it to determine how much I can understand.” Ted said gently. “It will likely be unconscious memory, the contents of which will helps us to decide what would trigger a subconscious reaction to a smell, cigarette smoke for example or a particular tune one of his abusers hummed or even the colour of their uniforms.”
“Just do it.” Severus whispered.
“Legilimens.”
People’s minds were funny things when you stepped into them.
He’d seen minds that were like libraries; some like potions ingredient cupboards and his he was told was like a garden.
Harry’s was like a child’s toy box…
Bright colours were likely happy memories, while the dull ones with the feel of sadness or pain were bad ones.
Ted reached for the deepest one.
"Lily! He's here! Take Harry and run!"
"I won't leave you!"

“Lily I love you but please protect Harry.”

Loud sounds came.

He shivered into his crib then the door opened.

Mama!

She wouldn’t look at him as she grabbed a pre-packed bag and slung it over her shoulder.

The door was flung open just as his mum was picking him up and cradled him in her arms.

There was a flash of green light and mum fell.
His head hurt and then he was screaming!
Mama wouldn’t move, mama never ignored him she always swept him up in her arms talking or singing to him.
Cold!
Then he heard Sebi!
“Severus, give me the child.”

He felt nervous with this unknown person. Was Sebi crying?

Then Siri came and he yelled at Sebi but the stranger rocked him.

There was a flash then both Sebi and the stranger went boom on the floor.

Siri was running down the stairs and Harry started whimpering.

Siri yelled at a big man and then he was shoved at the big man whose face was all black.

Ted dropped the ‘toy’ and reached for the next one.
Ted’s mind vehemently insisted that he was cold. It was dark too.
He was wrapped tight, he couldn’t move. He’d been sleeping for a long time but it was so cold…

No one came when he whimpered…

He was hungry, where was mama and dadi? What happened to Sebi? Why did Siri go away?

The memory was of cold, dark and fear of being alone…
Ted dropped the toy, he’d seen Lily’s murder but Harry didn’t understand it. Harry hadn’t understood that Sirius had attacked Severus and Lucius only to abandon Harry; that abandonment would scar Harry far beyond what Sirius could have imagined. Sometime after Hagrid took Harry from Sirius, he seemed to have been put into a magical sleep. Perhaps with a potion…
Ted doubted that Hagrid had any baby food, Lily had an emergency bag packed for Harry but Harry didn’t see it after Lily died.
One by one Ted reached for the other toys that seemed to hold bad memories.
He saw the woman, likely Petunia who found Harry and screamed. As well as his supposed Uncle Vernon who threw him in a car seat and dumped him at the first orphanage.
After that were memories of withheld food, sitting in soiled nappies, yelling, slaps and being cold.
Since Lily died until he was delivered to Severus, Harry had missed so many meals and had been abused in so many ways it made Ted’s heart hurt.
It was worse then seeing the memories of rapes and beatings that Muggleborn witches suffered…
Ted withdrew, almost in tears.
“Ted?” Severus frowned.
“I need…oh god…he doesn’t know but he knows…he saw it! Harry heard it…he heard everything…” Ted whispered.
“What do you mean?”
“He saw Lily die. He saw you and Lucius come. He saw Sirius hurt you and take him only to abandon him. Harry will have difficulty attaching to Sirius; the impression of being abandoned will linger between them. Since Lily’s died he’s missed so many meals…if it weren’t for his magic I’m afraid he’d be gone too. No one who smokes can be around Harry. Don’t leave him alone with any person who isn’t you or Remus until he seems more independent. If at all possible stay in the room with him. Try to avoid women in baggy jumpers and skirts…”
“No Mary Weasley then.” Severus snorted.
“That would be wise, also avoid anyone dressed as a nun. Some of the abusers were nuns…” Ted said painfully.
“Since we have no reason to go into Muggle World that should be easy.” Severus shrugged.
Ted muttered, “I’m probably going to have nightmares or be violently ill myself.”
Severus summoned a calming draught which Ted drank without complaint.
“If Harry’s this bad, I shudder to think what memories the other children have…”
Then Ted staggered out of the drawing room heading for the front parlour where the floo was…
Severus cuddled Harry, his heart twisting. Ted was a professional, a mind healer and Harry’s memories or impressions seemed to have upset him more then those of other patients…
