She ran her fingers over his engorged member, committing each vein and ridge to memory. He was asleep, or at least she thought he was. He was rather good at playing possum… and redirection. She’d woken a few hours ago and realized that Boxing Day had already passed. He’d managed to keep her distracted the entire day… which meant he shagged her into the mattress. And the carpet. And the chairs. And the table. And the wall. And the bath.
So much activity had left her sore and aching but she’d felt his member pressed hard into her backside only moments ago. She decided she wasn’t going to let him distract her any longer, but she just had to touch him again. So she did. She’d mapped his muscles, his scars, his sparse chest hair, and now she was stroking his cock. His hips rocked in time with her hand, head moving from side to side as he moaned in his sleep, begged her to finish him. She ran her finger under the mushroomed tip and traced the vein down to where it met with his balls. She brought her other hand up to gently fondle them, sliding her finger to press on his perineum.
Draco came with a shout, his dream of being handled by his wife melding with reality as he opened his eyes to see Hermione smirking at him, cum staining her hand. She brought her fingers up to take a taste of his essence. He groaned. She was going to kill him. Or maybe not. Her face fell as she cleaned him up and then scooted to the far edge of the bed. He got a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. This didn’t look good. Surely she wouldn’t, not when yesterday was so amazing.
“What are we doing Draco?”
She did. He sighed, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes and pulling himself up so he could see her. “Having fun. At least I am. Are you not?”
She chuckled. “Oh, I am. My bum still smarts you know.”
He smirked. “You loved it.” She blushed a lovely shade of red and he thought for a moment that he’d distracted her again. He should have known better.
“I meant, what are we doing with each other? What is this between us?”
He shrugged. “It’s just…us….being us.”
She snorted. “You should go into politics. You’re amazingly adept at skirting the issues.”
That smarted. He wasn’t like his father. “Well what in the bloody hell do you want us to be? Why do girls always have to label things? Can’t we just be for once in our entire fucking lives?”
Hermione felt horrible but she couldn’t stop now. Draco’s rant left him panting and wide eyed. She didn’t want to hurt him but that was why they had to do this. He probably wasn’t attached but clarifying things might make him feel better about his future.
“The room won’t keep us here forever Draco. What then? We can’t keep this up.”
“Why not?” Draco blurted before he thought better of it and cursed himself when she teared up.
“I think we both know the answer to that.”
“I know you read my father’s letter,” he said bitterly. “Disgusted with me already?”
“Hardly!” She snapped, angry that he thought so little of her after everything. “Do you honestly think I would be so selfish? Trust me, if anyone understands, it’s me. Well, it was me. My family is gone now.”
“Your grandmother?”
“I obliviated her. I couldn’t bear to make her think my parents died, so I erased myself. My mum and dad still remember her. I hadn’t been presented to society yet. Grandmother preferred to keep it that way, especially me being a witch, so no one else really knew about me.”
“So what now?”
She shrugged. “I start my life. I’ll have to find a job somewhere. Harry said I could move in with him until I got on my feet. He thinks I want to stay and rebuild, not that I don’t have any other place to go.”
“Why haven’t you told him? He’s your bloody friend.”
“I know that!” She yelled. “But he’ll smother me in sympathy and I can’t handle it! I know why Snape prefers solitude! I don’t want to be coddled. All the pity in the world isn’t going to bring them back.”
“And me? Why did you tell me?”
“Because I knew you wouldn’t coddle me. And you didn’t. You didn’t mutter useless things in my ear. You didn’t reassure me that everything would be okay. You didn’t tell me to look on the bright side or any of that other rubbish about bucking up and moving on and getting better. You just… held me… and let me be. You let me work through it myself and that’s all I ever really wanted.”
“So why this conversation now?” he asked quietly. “Why ruin something so perfect?”
“Because it isn’t perfect. It will never be perfect. In here, separated from everyone and everything, there is nothing holding us apart. We’re all we’ve got. We had to come together, work together…to survive. Out there, that’s where the world is. We can’t hide in a room forever.”
He hung his head in defeat. “What do you want from me?”
“Nothing.”
His head shot up in disbelief. “What?”
She closed her eyes and looked away. “Nothing. I…I can’t do this anymore. I told myself that it was just casual…but it’s become more than that. As much as I told myself it wouldn’t, it’s so much more.”
“Who are you trying to protect Hermione, yourself or your boyfriend?”
She snorted. “I don’t have a bloody boyfriend. Ron and I got together for a time. I’ll always love him, but we’re absolutely horrid together. I had a few one offs after the war, trying to feel… something. But I felt even emptier after those few blissful moments. But now….”
“Why now though? We’re still stuck in here. Why shatter it?”
She looked at him through tear filled eyes. “Because if I don’t stop it now, I’m going to fall in love with you. And I’ll never recover from that.”
He cleared his throat, trying to work up the courage to say what he was feeling. “But-“
Her face screwed up in panic. “DON’T SAY IT! Don’t… say it Draco. I know how the world works. Unless you cut ties, you’ll be roped into family duty. That duty includes a contracted marriage and an heir and all the social gatherings that go with it. It doesn’t include a mudblood and a band of ragamuffins.”
“Don’t call yourself that,” he seethed. “Don’t you ever call yourself that!”
She sniffed and held out her arm. “I am what I am Draco. I’m not ashamed but I understand now. This will never work. We’re going to change the world… but it will be a long time. One day, our world will be tolerant, but emotions are too high now. We’d be picked apart before we ever had a chance.”
“So what are you suggesting? Are you saying we can’t even be friends?”
She remained silent, dressing quickly and sitting at their desk. She waited until he did the same. They couldn’t be on the bed when she said this, not with so many happy moments flashing through her head. He sat across from her and took her arm in his, tracing the horrid word as if he could make it disappear. She couldn’t help but do the same to his arm. She wished things were different but if the war had taught her one thing, it was that one needed to pick their battles. This one was too big for either of them.
She sighed sadly, tracing a rough scar over the tail of the Dark Mark. “If we’d gotten out of here before that tub showed up, I would say yes. We’d be great friends. But now…I can’t. Being around you, smelling your scent, knowing how tender you can be… my heart would break into a thousand pieces. It’s better to leave with fond memories than subject ourselves to painful reminders.”
Draco nodded, unable to speak. She was right. If he had to see her every day, if she moved on and was happy while he was absolutely miserable, it would kill him. “Okay.”
The room shuddered around them. All of the furnishings disappeared, throwing them to the floor with a jolt. They were left in inky darkness…and naked. The room temperature dropped instantly, leaving them freezing and scared. A piercing scream ripped through the air making them scramble backwards and search for their wands. Their hands collided, the impulse to clutch to each other too great to ignore.
More screams and imperceptible shouting reverberated around the room. It was so loud they clutched their ears to protect them. Then something hazy appeared in the middle of the room, forming too slowly to make out. Something was happening… and it didn’t look like it was going to be pleasant.
AN: Uh. Oh. Now they've done it. The room looks pretty pissed off. Wonder what it's going to do to them? *evil grin* As always, thanks to everyone for reviewing. They'll keep me from saying something not so nice when we visit the in-laws this weekend. Honest! Keep them coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
