When Severus arrives that evening, her doubts rush in again, and she looks at him somewhat fearfully. He can see immediately that something is troubling her, and is naturally concerned. He comes to her and puts his hand under her chin, looking her in the eyes and asking what is wrong.
She drops her eyes for a moment, and says, “I don’t know how you’re going to feel about this, but...” Raising her eyes to his again, she finishes, “…we are going to have a child.” Time stretches out agonizingly slowly for her as she waits to see the response in his eyes and face; like each second is taking years to pass. She sees first incomprehension, like he’s not sure he heard her right; and then shock.
And then a growing look of wonder as it sinks in; and finally, she feels like she can breathe again. The look of wonder continues to spread on his face as he begins to search her eyes to see how she feels about it herself. She puts all the love she feels for him into her look, and smiles gently at him, wanting him to see that she wants this, too. He breathes softly, “oh, Evie…” as he buries his face in her hair, breathing in her scent as he holds her tightly.
He finally releases her and the look of joy and wonder on his face rivals any expression she’s yet seen from him; she certainly has no doubts at this point how he feels about it. He’s about to say something when suddenly he looks away and grimaces a bit, which makes her doubts creep back in.
He sees her concern when he looks back at her, and he smiles again and touches her face and says, “I'm not having second thoughts. It occurred to me that it is going to be very difficult at Hogwarts until I can keep this from being uppermost in my mind all the time, was all.” She is relieved, and also sees his point – it’s a difficulty (and a danger) that she hadn’t even considered.
He says, “I wish I could just find a way to not be there at all for a few days, at least. But I cannot think of any plausible enough reason for me to be absent.” Circling her waist protectively with his hands, he’s again about to say something when a spell from a completely unexpected visitor throws him across the room.
It is Professor McGonagall, who had come to check on Evie’s welfare. Ron and Hermione had come to her while they were doing research covertly at the school, very concerned because they’d heard nothing from Evie for some time; so she’d decided to come see for herself. She’d knocked but they apparently hadn’t heard her, so she had opened the door and come in.
She was completely shocked to see Snape there, with his hands on Evie; and, thinking Evie was in grave danger she had reacted immediately, disarming Snape. She hasn't dared to confront him at the school where he's got other Death Eaters for support, believing that the best she can do for the resistance right now is to keep her post at Hogwarts from being filled with yet another Death Eater. But because she believes (as most do) that Evie is their best hope against Voldemort, she's not about to let him harm her, no matter the risk to herself or her position.
Evie already has her wand out to defend them both as she's looking for the source; and is equally shocked to see it is Professor McGonagall, the tip of her wand following Snape's trajectory across the room from the Expelliarmus spell she hit him with and obviously considering whether to do worse to him or not when he lands.
Evie quickly puts herself between McGonagall and Snape, and Professor McGonagall says, “Miss Potter, move out of the way. Right now.”
Evie looks her in the eye and replies, “Professor, there is a whole lot you need to know before you do anything further, and some of it is going to be a bit of a shock, I’m afraid. The biggest shock of all is likely going to be that I am pregnant with his child.”
McGonagall drops her wand entirely and stands with her mouth agape, looking at Evie like Evie has just sprouted three heads. Evie retrieves and returns McGonagall’s wand to her, and then takes her by the arm and leads her to the hallway where Phineas’s portrait is. He’s still there from earlier, and Evie first nods to him (communicating that Severus’s reaction to her news had been positive) and then tells McGonagall to talk with him for a moment while she checks on Severus.
McGonagall surreptitiously performs a charm to detect whether Evie is under an Imperius curse, and Evie laughs when she notices it and says she isn’t under any type of coercion, magical or mundane. Evie says, “Just talk with Phineas about what Snape did before you do anything else, he has information that you don’t have, and you really need to hear it.”
Phineas understands immediately what the issue is by Evie’s comment, and begins to tell McGonagall about Dumbledore’s curse from the ring and why Snape killed him. She scoffs initially because Dumbledore himself had treated any questions about his hand like it was merely an inconvenience to him; but Phineas tells her if she doubts, go ask Dumbledore’s portrait herself when she knows she’s alone in the Headmaster’s office.
This gives her pause – she knows Phineas wouldn’t bluff, especially not when he knows she can do exactly what he’s suggesting – right now, if she wishes, since Snape is here and the office will be empty.
McGonagall asks, “Why, then, has Professor Snape not told any of the loyal staff this? And why didn’t Professor Dumbledore tell us, either?”
Phineas looks gravely at her and says, “Do you think you could have acted your part, as well as Severus has acted his, if you’d known? Could you and the others have, to all outward appearances and under all circumstances, kept up a believable level of outrage and hatred towards him, if you’d known that Dumbledore’s death was inevitable and that he’d made Severus promise to do it because they both knew the alternatives would be much worse - if you had known that Severus’s act was purely one of mercy rather than malice?”
She bows her head at that, and admits she probably could not have, no. After a moment she adds that it will be hard enough doing it now, as well as keeping the secret from the others. She wonders aloud if she might be able to take a few days’ absence to prepare herself for it better, and Phineas chuckles and suggests she ask the headmaster since he’s so conveniently here – in fact, it might solve a problem for him, too.
She makes her way back downstairs, deep in thought, and when she gets back to the living room, Snape is back on his feet and comes towards her with his hand outstretched and a worried look on his face.
This is so uncharacteristic of him that she extends her own hand without thinking, and he takes it gently, looks her in the eye and says, “Minerva – my life and the life of my unborn child are in your hands now. One slip, one word to the wrong person and my life will be ended in an instant; or worse, Voldemort will succeed in capturing and torturing Evie, making me watch as her life and our child’s life are taken as cruelly as possible. I beg of you, please – keep this secret with your life.”
She sees unshed tears in his eyes at the last and it causes tears to spring up in her own – she isn’t certain how this change has come upon him, but she cannot fail to be moved by his plea.
They sit down, and Snape tells her that they’ve only just discovered that they are going to have a child; and he’s worried that even as good an actor as he is, he won’t be able to contain his joy for a few days. He knows he can’t be gone without suspicion, but Minerva could; would she consider taking Polyjuice for a few days and impersonating him?
She thinks about it for a moment, and then begins to grin – saying, “Oh, I’d love the chance to get a bit of my own back on the Carrows, Severus.”
He chuckles a bit and says, “Just don’t take it too far, we don’t want your cover blown. However – as they’d certainly expect me to be no less sarcastic than I am towards anyone else, I’m sure you can get away with a fair bit of snark towards them whenever you’re so inclined, Minerva. In fact, there are a few tasks you could probably set them to that they’d really love you for as well…” McGonagall’s eyes widen, and they grin at one another conspiratorially.
She is completely surprised by his ready smile and his wicked sense of humor as well as by his plea to her earlier; all things she’d never really seen from him in all their years at Hogwarts. She begins to wonder bemusedly if she checked the wrong person for being under some kind of enchantment. She can of course now see that he and Evie are very much in love and she knows that has to be the explanation for the change in him, but Minerva has no idea how Evie ever got close enough to him in the first place to get to where they are now.
For his part, he doesn’t find it so surprising that he's willing to be more open with her. If anyone had to discover them and see his joy at Evie’s news, he is glad it was Minerva. Of all his peers staff-wise, he's always respected her the most; and knows that (at least up to the point that she felt he'd betrayed them) she respected him as well, even when they were disagreeing about something. He's secretly enjoyed her razor-sharp wit many times also, especially when it came to the insufferable Umbridge.
