Chapter 21
After a look around the table and seeing all those that he needed were there, Albus launched in. “This is how we're going to go about the mission. Arthur is going to go over to Grimmauld Place and ride to Privet Drive with the three. All of us are going to meet them there. We are going to stay as far away from them as we can.” Glancing around again, he added, quietly, though with a determined bent to his voice after his eyes lit on Severus, “No one is to make any comments to them. At all. Unless Sirius engages. They agreed to this, but they are still not in a good enough place they can take on so much and I will not have anyone starting an all out war with them because they can't keep their comments to themselves. Do I make myself clear?”
Hearing affirmations, he looked at Arthur then asked, “How are they going to do this? Do you know? They said in their owl that they had something in place.”Sighing, Arthur said, “I believe that they are going to employ Harry's Animagus form for part of it. That should lessen the stress levels. Of course, he'll transform back in front of them so they'll know it's Harry. That should make it easier on Remus, but especially Sirius, as he can keep Harry close. They're going to say some, but not much, then let us handle the rest. Sirius made it very clear that they cannot handle this for long. Once they've done their part, they'll Apparate back to Grimmauld Place and let us take it from there. Either that, or if the Dursleys start igniting issues, they are leaving. That was Remus' insistence as he does not want Sirius set off. They've all worked very hard to get into a place they can actually manage to do this, so they don't want a setback, especially with Harry. He's not fully back to where he was, but is close. Also, they want it clear that no one is to reveal Harry's Animagus form, for obvious reasons.”“Not something any of us will take issue with and is understandable.” Albus nodded. “Minerva, if you would—stay close to the three of them. You shouldn't cause a problem for Sirius as he knows and trusts you. As it goes along, if it looks like an issue is forming, let me know. I'll step in and handle it from there.”“Of course, Albus,” Minerva nodded, a tight smile on her face. It was something she would gladly take on as she hadn't seen Harry and Sirius yet. Tending to this would give her the chance to confirm for herself that they were fine.“Once Sirius and Harry have their say, Severus is going to take over. He knows Petunia and may have a way to get through to her when the rest of us can't. After he gets done, we'll go from there,” Albus told everyone.“And if they still refuse to listen?” Moody asked gruffly. “Nothing we've done so far has worked, Albus. I'm not holding out high hopes this will either.”Giving a sad sigh, Albus shook his head then told them, tone weary, “If it doesn't, Rufus will assign a few to keep watch over there. That's not the best as the DMLE is stretched quite thin at this point. We'll add everything we can think of for protections, of course. I just don't fancy their chances if they don't heed our warnings. Tom will end up set off shortly. They will become a focus, I'm sure.”“Black is going through with the plan then?” Severus asked, arms folded over his chest, looking at Albus. He knew they had mentioned he was, but wanted to confirm that to prepare himself for all that was coming.Motioning for Arthur to take over, Albus leaned back and waited. He knew, of course, but as Arthur heard what Sirius said first hand, it was better for him to take over.“Everything is in place, all it needs is Sirius' signature,” Arthur explained, looking around. “I was told that the house is within days of getting done. Once it is and the elves have everything moved then they will transfer everything to Albus and he's signing the first of the papers. That's going to cause hell as they lock down everyone's vaults. He just wants in that new house before they do that, nothing more. It's also a measure to give us the time to make sure we're as protected as we can get. The Burrow is something he's worried about. This will also give Rufus some added time to make sure he's ready for what it's going to set off.”Shaking his head, he added, “He's not playing. I can assure you that. From what I was told yesterday, this was in the works before they went through the Veil. Sirius just needed to get in a place he could do it, as him being wanted would have caused him huge problems. He also assured me that there is no negotiation in this. The only area he's willing to give in at all is on Draco's bastard status. Nothing more. Lucius has to sign a legal, magically binding contract to stop following the other side and funding them, even in covert ways. That means we can all expect hell. From what he said, that first batch of papers is not only going to reinstate Andromeda, but name Tonks as his heir. I think we need to make damned sure that all that side are protected. Attacking them won't change anything, but that will come and we all know it.”“I'll tend to it personally,” Moody told him with a grim nod. “Everything will be as fortified as I can manage in the next 48 hours, don't worry.”“Molly brought something up to me that I think we need to tend to, now,” Arthur said, softly, looking at Albus. Seeing the man motion him to go on, he continued, “Some of us need to go over and tend to beefing up protections for Hermione's family. They are in grave danger, we know that. I talked to them and they are well aware of how precarious their position is. While I put up all I could, they need more. She was considered one of Harry's best friends. I'm sure that's going to come into play very fast. While there are other Muggle families that are in danger, they are the biggest target.”“Yes, we'll tend to that tomorrow,” Albus nodded, already thinking who they could use to take care of the matter. Face grave, he looked around the table then said, “We are now at the juncture of we have days to make sure everything we can get into place is there, everyone. I'll be assigning plenty to many of you to tend to. On top of that, make sure you and yours are as protected as you can get them. Filius has agreed to come in and help with bits, such as the Fidelius on the Burrow. That we will get up within the next couple of days. We won't be having meetings there once it's done. If it's an emergency, we'll use somewhere else safe. Just make sure you've protected yourself the best you can. It may take some of you staying together to manage. That's something some of you might want to consider. While none of this will be fun, it's something we've been waiting on and it can only help all of us get the upper hand we need. Keep that in mind. What Sirius is going to yank from Tom is an advantage that will end up being huge. We need to capitalize on it. Rufus can only help us. Keep that in mind.” Seeing tense nods, he pressed on to some minor areas while they waited for the right time to leave.
Holding the naked Harry close, with the younger wizard facing him, Sirius stroked his back. Trying not to glance at the clock, he was tense. Remus was downstairs to give them some time alone. Though it helped when all three of them were together, this time he and Harry needed to stay alone to make sure it was as under control as they could get it. Since they were the two with the biggest issues, they needed time together.
Stroking Harry's head, Sirius looked down at his quiet godson. Harry was stressed, probably more than he was, and it was manifesting this way. Oh, he could get Harry to talk and give more than one word answers, it was just that Harry was anxious, thus dealing with it this way. Sighing softly, feeling his own instincts at war as he tried to stay calm and not focus on what he knew that odious family had done to Harry over the years, he kissed Harry on top of the head. “Its fine,” he mumbled, something meant to soothe the both of them. “We'll handle it just fine. Nothing to worry about. If it looks like someone is setting off either of us, we're leaving. We made that as clear as we could to Arthur.”“I know,” Harry told him softly, forehead still resting on Sirius' shoulder, eyes shut. “It's just the idea. The stress from this is almost maddening.”“It is for all of us,” Sirius admitted. “Even Remus. He's just handling it better than we are. It's something we need to do, though. You know that. Everyone has a valid concern about what might come once those papers are signed.”“That I get,” Harry admitted. Shaking his head, he added, voice shaky, “I'm not ready for this, Sirius. I honestly can't face them right now.”“We'll all be together,” Sirius assured him. “It's nothing we can't handle. And it's not something we can put off.” Once more, that was more for the both of them than Harry as he was feeling the same damned way. “You stay as Little Paws until I give you the signal. That should make it easier on you. After that, you can say what you want, but we won't be staying long. Nothing to worry about. We're going to be as safe as we can get with so many there. They know what's coming and we aren't staying.”“The fact that plenty of others will be there isn't helping, Sirius,” Harry sighed, shuddering at the thought. Quietly, he then added, “I get we need to do this and it's a good first step, it's just the idea of who it is.”“More I get,” Sirius agreed with a nod. What Harry mentioned was causing him problems too. There were plenty of other bits tossed in there as well, making it horrid. This was something they had to do, though, as it was one of the last parts they needed to put in place before he signed those papers. Once they were fully moved in, something that would take less than a day, he was signing the damned things. Then hell would come. No, they couldn't put it off, no matter how much he might have liked to so they had a chance to get in a better place. It just meant they had to push this and keep a close eye on what he and Harry would experience before it got horrid. Softly, he told Harry, “We'll get through this together, just like we have up until this point. It's all we can do. I'll handle as much of it as I can. You only need to confirm who you are. As we've already worked out how to do that, it won't be a problem. It's just going to take ten minutes, no more than that.”Slumping, Harry nodded, but said nothing. He got it, he really did, it just didn't help with all he was dealing with. Not to mention who all would be there. That was sending the anxiety levels even higher.
“Now, look,” Vernon snarled, pointing at the freak called Albus Dumbledore. “I don't care what you lot say! You are not getting this house! The boy died. All of you told us that. Good riddance, I say! There is no chance he can be back.”
“Just go,” Petunia said, looking far sourer than normal as she clutched onto Dudley, who was cowering behind his father. “Even you lot can't bring people back from the dead.”“As we've tried to explain multiple times, Harry did come back,” Albus told them softly, an exasperated sigh in his voice. “In a few minutes we'll prove it to you. We don't want your house. All we're doing is trying to keep you safe. With your nephew back, you'll end up targeted by the ones that killed your sister, Petunia.”“Codswallop,” Vernon snorted, crossing his arms over his chest. “I don't believe you. If we don't see it with our own eyes, we won't believe it.”Lifting his chin, Albus stared at him then said, “We'll prove it in a matter of minutes. If we can, are you going to believe us, Vernon?”“If you can prove it I will,” Vernon snorted, puffing out his mustache in an attempt to look more intimidating. “I don't fancy your chances of doing that.”A small smile on his face, Albus nodded. “So be it, Vernon. We will in a matter of minutes.” Hearing the signal sent by Kingsley, he looked where it came from then gestured to the stretch limo crawling in their direction. “Keep watching, Vernon.”Piggy eyes going slightly buggy at the limousine approaching, Vernon straightened up, wanting the freaks off his lawn so no one thought anything was off. Eyes going bigger when the limo stopped in front of their drive, he smoothed down his hair then snorted, “Off my lawn. We have company.”“Oh, we know,” Minerva said with a tight smile, clasping her hands in front of her. This was good.“Who is it, Vernon? Do you know?” Petunia asked, eyes drifting from her husband to the limo.“That would be your nephew,” Albus told them with a smile, gesturing to the long car as the door opened. Watching Arthur step out, followed by Remus and Sirius, who was holding the small dog he knew was Harry. Motioning for the four to come closer, he said, “We're about to drive the point home.”Stepping over by Sirius, who appeared tense and angry, trembling slightly, Minerva said, a fond bent to her voice, “Good to see you again, Sirius.”“You as well, Minerva,” Sirius told her in a tight voice, glaring at the idiots he knew were Harry's family. Then his eyes flitted to who else was there. He was pleased that Albus had everyone move back so he didn't feel as crowded.“I don't see the boy,” Vernon snorted, shaking his head. “You said you would prove it.”Gazing down at the little dog Sirius was holding, Minerva gave another fond smile when the animal looked at her and she saw the green eyes. Now she understood what Arthur said about not knowing who this would be. “Oh, I think they are about to.” She told the buffoon, lifting her chin and looking at him.“He's back and he's right here,” Sirius snarled at Vernon, eyes flashing dangerously. Looking down at Little Paws, who was now gazing up at him, he asked, “Right, Harry?” That was the signal.Giving a soft bark Little Paws jumped out of Sirius' arms then transformed back before his four paws hit the ground. Leaning back against Sirius, who slipped his arm around his waist, Harry gazed at his family, not hearing the soft shriek from his aunt, though noticing how pale they went and how they took several steps back. “Yes, I'm back.”“No, it can't be,” Vernon stammered, shaking his head. “He's a fake! You lot disguised one of yourselves to look like him so you can get our house. It won't work, I tell you!”Looking over his shoulder at Sirius when he nudged him, Harry then sighed and said, “I'm not. I'm back. To prove it I'll tell you something only you lot know. Like how my room was the boot cupboard under the stairs until I got my Hogwarts letter. That was only because you were afraid you were being watched. Then there was the time Aunt Petunia cut all my hair off but the fringe, so it would hide my scar, because she hated how it looked. It grew back overnight. Dudley's Harry Hunting games with his friends. Do you want me to go on?” That's where he stopped, not sure if he could go on anyway. Though his voice was soft, it was steady and level, but inside he was having all kinds of issues. All he really wanted to do was change back into Little Paws and have Sirius hold him. Panic was there once again, but not as bad as it had been before and it wasn't triggering the submissiveness, though that was there as well.Holding Harry close, Sirius grinned malevolently at how pale Petunia went and how Vernon's red flush seemed like it was sliding from his face. “Want him to go on? He can. There is plenty more he knows that you never wanted anyone to find out.” Snarling, he said, “It's real. Get over it. Your nephew is back. Unless you want to die a painful death at the hands of the people that killed Harry's parents, I suggest you listen to these people. Why they want to help three beings that are as despicable as you are is beyond me, but they do. If it was up to me, I'd toss you to them then celebrate when you died for all you did to Harry.” That's where he stopped. Remus' hand on his arm pulled him back from the rage that was building in him, calming him slightly. Shaking his head, he gave Harry a squeeze, waiting. All he wanted was to get out of here now, something he planned to do in a minute.Happy with this, as the Dursleys were now seriously off-kilter and slightly panicked looking, Severus stepped in front of Albus, as planned then sneered, “Want more proof or is that enough for you? You are in danger! Do you now get that? We've been trying to pound that into your thick skulls for months now.” Eyes flitting to Petunia, who was now staring at him, finally figuring out who he was, a horror-struck look on her face as it hit home, he snapped, “Do you want to die like your sister, Petunia? That and watch your husband and son do the same? Well?” Not waiting for an answer, he thundered in a voice that would have sent students at Hogwarts scurrying for cover, “Enough foolishness! Let us help you! You may lose a house, but you'll save your miserable lives, you imbeciles! I can tell you the maniac is back. And he's trying to do just what he did in the last war.”Though he thought it would do Harry and Sirius good to hear what Severus had to say as the man wasn't likely to pull punches, Remus knew it was best to get them all out of here, fast. Sirius—he was angry. Remus could hear him grinding his teeth from where he stood. Then there was the murderous expression on his face. Harry, though not acting like he had when Albus triggered the worst, was highly uncomfortable and looking anywhere but at the people there. It was time to get them out of here before this grew worse.Clearing his throat and getting Minerva's attention, he smiled at her then said, “We're going to leave now. I think all of you can take it from here.”“We can,” she told him with a nod. Looking at Sirius and Harry, she added, softly, a tiny smile on her face, “It's good to see you both. When you get in a better place, I hope it'll be for longer.”“We'll manage,” Sirius told her, tearing his eyes away from Harry's family and the right reaming they were getting from Snape to look at her. “Keep yourself safe.”Seeing Harry glance her way and nod, though saying nothing, something that saddened her, Minerva told him, “Don't worry about me. All of you keep your heads down and out of the line of fire. Remember; if you need any help, you message us and we'll be there.”“We will,” Remus assured her with a smile.Giving Harry's head a rub, Sirius waited until the youngest of them look at him then said, “Let's get home.” That was the signal for him to change back. Though Harry could Apparate, something he had taught his godson on the other side, they weren't going to chance that. Instead, Harry changed back to Little Paws. Picking up the small dog, Sirius nodded to Remus then the three of them Apparated away with a crack.
Lying in bed long after dark, somewhere the three of them had been since returning from Surrey, Remus read through the letter they had just gotten from Albus and smiled. Nodding, he set it aside then told the other two, “The Dursleys agreed, finally. Everyone is moving them tomorrow to somewhere safe until this blows over.”
“Good,” Sirius sighed, holding Harry close then taking a sip of his beer. “We are not doing that again, Remus. I don't care what anyone needs. Harry and I just can't take it at the moment. This was bad, plenty bad.”“I'll make that as clear as I can, Sirius,” Remus nodded, understanding completely. Looking between the two, he asked, “Are you doing better and how bad was it? I got some, of course, but want the totality of what went on to understand.”“Better,” Sirius sighed, downing more beer. “At least I'm calmer.”“Better here too,” Harry said softly, clinging to Sirius and looking at Remus. “It brought on—not as bad as Dumbledore, but plenty of not nice bits. I think if Sirius hadn't been holding onto me, it would have ended up like the bit with Dumbledore. It wasn't fun to deal with.”“I'll remember that part,” Sirius said, looking down at Harry then giving him a squeeze. Sighing, he said, “I wanted to just completely hex the idiots into oblivion. That's all there was to it.”“You both kept it under control, though. That's good and far better than what we've dealt with. I think that's real progress as I expected plenty of really bad bits to come from it,” Remus admitted, shifting onto his side so he could drape an arm over not only Sirius' midsection, but touch Harry as well. “How well did both of you handle Minerva? If she didn't cause a problem, that means we can use her for whatever if we need to as she can be around.”“I did fine with her,” Sirius admitted with a nod.“Same here,” Harry seconded. “It was like Mr. Weasley with me. The problem was with the others around. That brought on the reaction.”“Good. That means we have someone else we can use if there are issues.” Remus said, happy with that. Chuckling, he added, “She was quite pleased to see you both, it appeared. She smiled. We know she doesn't do that much.”“She did, didn't she?” Sirius grinned, giving Harry a squeeze. Relaxing, he waited as Remus began asking questions so they could dissect what they dealt with. That could only help them later when it came to parts of this and give them hints of what they could use or to expect. Then he just wanted to rest. The stress of what they did had taken its toll and they needed to relax from it. Plenty more was coming over the next couple of days, so they wanted to keep it down to a minimum.
