Chapter 21
After turning on the speaker function for his phone, PJ grabbed the notes he had taken early this morning and flipped through them to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything. He was talking to Toonie, so he wanted to ask her about a few items he found in the letters to see if she had more information. If he read some of what his mum wrote correctly, the two grew up next to Snape, so she might know. Of course, it wasn't the reason for the call, but he would bring it in.
He smiled as his aunt talked about how she loved where she was living, the people, everything there was to do and such. Good! She was happy and managing, all that mattered to him. It was even better that she found what she wanted to do for a job. From what she said, she liked having Hedwig around and had seen owls in town as well. After thinking it over, she decided to breed them. She told him she already ordered what she needed and was getting pairs of several of the larger breeds to start out with. He could hear she was excited and liked the fact she was. It would give her a good, steady income and was something he thought she would enjoy as well. Hearing her excited made him happy and relieved she found something to occupy her time rather than fret over so much, such as him and Dudley.Once they went through everything they both wanted to cover, he jumped into the topic he wanted to bring up to her. “I finally had a chance to read through all those letters from mum,” he started.“You didn't let what was there set you off then go and do something foolish, did you?” She asked, a wary tone in her voice.“No, but I had a good bout of temper and swearing over some of it,” he told her honestly with a sigh.“It's understandable you did,” Petunia told him, now sounding relieved. While PJ was far calmer than he used to be when a younger teen, some of what was in them, such as the part about Severus, was enough to make anyone blow their stack. She had worried he would become irate then let his temper get the better of him.“I have some questions about parts and was hoping you could give me some information,” he said, straightening up and focusing on his notes while getting a piece of parchment ready for any more he would take. “I know you weren't around mum at the time she died, but what I want to know about is from way before then.”“I'll tell you all I can,” she assured him. Then she asked, “Is it something for a story or not?”“I honestly don't know,” PJ told her. “What I've read I'm not sure I could use. With what I have so far, I'm not even sure Du Bois could use it for some of what he's doing. At this point, it's more just for my information, nothing more. Some of it I did know, from like Sirius and Remus or I heard it other ways over the years. This piece I didn't, ever. And I'm curious. If it does come down to using it for a story, we would have to work it oddly because of how I learned the information. I'm not sure I would be willing to turn over mum's private letters to anyone for use when it comes to writing an article.”“I understand,” Petunia told him, smiling a tad and relaxing in her chair.“If I do go that route, I'll let you know to prepare,” PJ assured her. “Well, and try to find the information you give me another way so you're not involved. I'm sure it's possible. Until I know what it is, I won't be able to judge how I could manage.”“That's fine,” she assured him with another smile, taking a sip if her tea. “What do you want to know about? The topic anyway? I'm not sure how much help I can give as—well, my relationship with your mother wasn't the best at the time, as you know.” There was a sad look on her face when she admitted to it, though.“No, it's not about mum, at least mostly not. I want to know about Snape,” PJ explained, hoping not to upset his aunt as his mum, and what happened between the two so long ago, was a tetchy subject with her.“Oh, him,” Petunia, harrumphed, a sour look on her face as she did. That nasty boy was someone she never did like, for more reasons than just he could do magic and she saw him as part of the wedge between her and Lily. “What do you want to know?”“From some of what mum wrote, it seems he grew up close to the two of you. Is that true?” PJ asked, making note of the question he asked so he could add the reply.Petunia told him, a distasteful look on her face, “Yes, he did. The other side of town, the one that was rather – nasty, if I remember right. It's been a long time since I was in Cokeworth and I'm not sure how far it was. We met him the first time at a park we liked. I have a feeling he was watching your mother long before she had her first bout of what I now know was accidental magic.”PJ made a note of what she said, making sure to add the name of the town so he could nosy around a little and get more information if he needed to. “I thought that's how the letter sounded,” he told her distractedly as he wrote. “Not sure if I ever told you, since I just can't remember, but he taught Potions when I was at Hogwarts. I know I mentioned the professor hated me, but I can't recall if I said his name or not.”“You never did,” she told him, straightening up slightly. “If you had, I would have filled you in on all I knew then told you to stay as far away from him as you could get. He was always a nasty piece of work, PJ.”“He was when I was at Hogwarts,” PJ snorted, rolling his eyes. “And he's no better now, trust me. He's part of the Order, actually, a spy. Though I'm sure you read that part if you went through all the articles I sent you.”“So far I haven't read them all, just the one that was the interview with you. He was mentioned, I think, but I don't remember much beyond that.” She told him, fully planning to go through the rest when she hung up so she could see what was said.“It wasn't much,” PJ assured her.“He's the one that gave up the Prophecy that got your mother killed!” Petunia said, tone affronted. “How is he now helping? And why? I wouldn't trust him as far as I could punt him!”“That's part of what I'm trying to figure out,” PJ told her, honestly. “And I don't think anyone but Dumbledore trusts him any more than you do. However, from what Du Bois and I found, he is a real spy, not just playing at it. Which makes me wonder why he is spying in the first place and if it was something Dumbledore manipulated him into doing. Let me see what we can dig up. Not sure if we can use it, but I want to know.”Before Toonie could get angrier, something that sounded like it was coming, he pressed on, “I wanted to get some background on what he was like from you. Not sure how much interaction you had with him, but I'm certain it was at least a little from what you just said and what was in the letters. From the sound of what I read, in the letters mum was friends with him for a time. Is that right?”“Yes,” she told him, stiff huffing. She then tried to focus to give PJ what she could remember. “I can't remember when exactly he first showed himself, but I think she was about nine.”“What was he like then?” PJ inquired, sliding into the normal mode he used when he interviewed someone for an article of some kind or research. While he had a wonderful relationship with Toonie, the manner he used for such endeavors worked for most and kept them calm. As this was probably a very tetchy topic with his aunt, he thought it would work with her as well. “I know what he was like when I was in his class and now, so I'm curious if it was different then.”“That would depend on who you were,” Petunia told him, brow furrowed as she thought back to the time all those years ago. Then she added, “And when. He changed over the years.”After taking some more notes, PJ said, “Let's start with what you remember before Hogwarts. What do you mean by depends?”With a heavy sigh, Petunia explained, “With your mother he was very nice, like her best friend. He talked with her about all manner of topics and didn't get sarcastic or condescending. With everyone else—well, he was a snarky, nasty person. He and I went more than one round over his attitude and the way he spoke to me. Even Lily chided him over it more than once. He didn't stop, but he made sure to either not do it around her or just not talk to me.”“Sounds like the man I had in school and the one I've met since,” PJ snorted, rolling his eyes and jotting more down. “So, they were friends?”“I think Lily was the only real friend Severus ever had,” Petunia told him honestly. “Ever. From what I know, no one wanted anything to do with him, either in school or out because of his attitude, the way he spoke to people, all of it. It seemed like he was of the opinion everyone but your mother was beneath him. Even adults didn't like him. He was—well, his family wasn't the nicest, I know this, what with his father being a drunken layabout that was just nasty and his mother working all the time. His parents fought constantly and rather neglected him. From what I remember, he was always in dirty, ill-fitting clothes that didn't match, something many made fun of him for. I don't think those were the causes, though.”Then, with a sigh, she tried to explain, “Severus was smart, very smart. No one would deny it for a second. He was well read and academically gifted, from what I know. The issue came in with the fact he knew it too. And he flaunted it in everyone's face, talking down to them and trying to prove his intellectual superiority. He even did so with adults, treating them with disdain, especially the ones that weren't highly educated and tended to work in the more blue-collar type jobs. If those areas weren't bad enough, add in the fact he was a Wizard and it made the superiority complex grow. He seemed to view anyone that wasn't a Witch or Wizard as second class citizens that were beneath him. And he treated them like it. I was on the receiving end of it more than once, despite Lily trying to make him stop. We didn't have the greatest of relationships by then, this I admit, but his attitude wasn't from the fallout. It was just how he was.”From what PJ knew, many Death Eaters, even Voldemort himself, had the same kind of attitude, especially about Muggles. As he scribbled notes madly, he asked, “His parents—were they both Magical or not? Do you know?”“His mother was a Witch, his father a Muggle,” Petunia explained. “I didn't learn this until years later, of course. From what Lily told me, his father married his mother because she was a Witch, thinking he could get what he wanted magically and not have to work for it. He learned the restrictions on the use of Magic and wasn't pleased. I'm quite sure it didn't help his attitude in the least.”Brow furrowed as he made note of what she said then another to find out what he could about the parents, PJ asked, “Did he have a problem with mum because she was a Muggle-born? I'm asking because most Death Eaters do.”“Not at first, no,” Petunia told him, trying to remember conversations and letters from so long ago. “Before they went to school, he seemed to like her as much as she did him, explaining everything he knew about your world. He treated her like any other friend would, never once talking down to her the way he was known for with most everyone else. However, it started to change once they did go to school.”“How so? Do you know?” PJ asked, scribbling madly, adding notes about what he wanted to check into. With what he knew of the time his mum and the others went to school, plus who was there, then the house Snape went into, he could guess parts of the reasons, but wanted to hear what she had to say before jumping to conclusions.“This is where I get murky, PJ, I admit it,” Petunia admitted with a sigh. “Your mother told me some and I saw other parts, so I've pieced it together a little from those then letters later on. I'll give up what I know for sure.”“After the first year at Hogwarts, he was different. To most of us, he was far nastier, almost hateful. Unlike before school, he didn't try to hide it anymore. It's like the superiority attitude grew. While he was still good friends with Lily, he even started acting that way with her as well, at least a little bit. Oh, Lily put him in his place when he did, like she was known for, and he would then apologize, but he would never have done so before school. Lily told me after I overheard him pull that stunt once with her that it had to do with the house he was in at school and being exposed to others in it as they were known for such nonsense. She explained the behavior to me as something he had to do to survive and pretend, even with her. Then she assured me it was just something he had to adjust to out of school. While she believed it, I didn't, PJ.” She admitted. Then she asked, softly, “I know you didn't go there for long, but was she right about this part? Or was it her making excuses?”“She was right, especially with what I know of those who were in that house at the time he went,” PJ sighed, leaning back, though glancing at the notes so far.“I'm not sure how much you know about the houses at Hogwarts, but he was in Slytherin. Slytherin was known for some really dark and nasty people in it over the years. Oh, all the houses had their fair share of those who went bad or were rotten, but Slytherin had a reputation for it. It's the house that produced Voldemort.”“From what I know, Snape was in Slytherin at the same time as plenty of known Death Eaters, nasty ones at that. Many are still around as well. They are high ranking, too. So, he probably was exposed to plenty and would have had to play nice to get along. The crap you're talking about is standard with the ones he went with because they consider Purebloods, those who have no Muggle blood in them, or so they think, superior to everyone else. Rather like the racist idiots you know about in Muggle society. It's the same kind of mindset.”While Petunia didn't fully understand the Pureblood bit, though she had heard parts from Lily in the past, she now had a foundation for some of it because of the comparison with racists. With a sigh, she told him, “At least she wasn't just making excuses for him.”“I think, with what I know, he would have had to conform to their standards to fit in. Even if he did, it didn't explain some of what came later, though,” PJ told her, straightening back up. Then he went back to his questions. “Did it get worse? With mum I mean.”“Oh yes,” Petunia confirmed with a nod she knew PJ couldn't see. “Each year it grew worse. Up until what would have been her fifth year, she kept making excuses for him, ignoring the fact he was getting worse with each passing one, though she would call him on it when he pulled the stunts with her. From what I personally saw, he wasn't going by a habit anymore. My thought was he really started to believe what he was spouting by then, or had all along and was just letting it show, and seemed to look down on Lily. She blamed it on the house again, the people in it and, well, your father and his friends picking on him. I'm not sure how true the latter is, though.”“It's true,” PJ admitted with a sigh. “I'll be the first to admit it was. Sirius and Remus have told me it did happen, along with some plenty nasty parts. I don't know how bad it was, just that it happened. What I've also heard is Snape did the same exact things to others; bullying and the picking on them. Hell, he still does!”“Him still doing so doesn't surprise me a bit,” Petunia groused, looking sour. “He was—PJ, he was nasty. Very nasty. The longer he went to that damned school, the nastier he grew. I don't know why either. He just did. By then his home life wasn't good. His father was far worse, drinking more. His mother, who tried to protect him a little anyway though she didn't do a very good job, had passed away. So, he was left with the nasty man. I'm sure it aided in what was going on, honestly.”“Probably,” PJ admitted, making a note to look up Snape's parents. “With mum—how much longer did it go on? Do you know? I mean before she ended the friendship. It sounded like, from the letters, she did eventually.”“What would have been in their fifth year,” Petunia told him. “He called her a Mudblood. Not sure what that means, but Lily told me it was the supreme insult.”“It is,” PJ sighed, grinding his teeth slightly at the slur. “It's rather the equivalent of the 'N' word. In our world, it's about the biggest slur you can level.”“That rotten man,” Petunia huffed, highly indignant. “How dare he!”Shaking her head, she pressed on, still mad, “While he tried to apologize to her, several times, I don't think she was willing to let it go finally. She said she also asked him about his intent to join those awful Death Eaters. He didn't deny he was. I don't know much about that lot, but I know they were bad. She told me the summer before she was worried he was leaning towards them. That's what ended it, I think. She wanted nothing to do with someone that would side with them, especially since they targeted people like her. From what she told me, she hated he was fascinated with the darker aspects of magic, knowing it would lead to nothing good.”“They are worse than you can imagine,” PJ sighed, shaking his head. “The Dark—it's rather like a drug, from what I've seen. The more you explore, the more addicted you get then want more. It's like a siren song of some kind, especially to those that crave power or want respect. They don't get it, of course, but do engender fear, something they seem to like just as much and confuse with respect, then end up going down a nasty path. Many end up dying because of it. Not all, but plenty. The path you described I can attribute to plenty that were just horrible. Including the evil git that killed mum and dad.”“I'm not surprised,” Petunia admitted with a heavy sigh. “Severus—look, we all made mistakes when we were young. I'm included in that category. What happened with Lily is one I'll regret to my dying day. Most of us realize it as we grow older then try to do the best we can to overcome what we did and be a better person. Severus—I don't think he would change much from what I knew of him. Well, or would in some ways. Maybe he did give up the dark whatever. He was just so—well, nasty, and I don't see where it would change.”“He hasn't,” PJ admitted with a groan. “I've seen it first hand with how he treats people. Sirius and Remus have made it clear he's the same snarky a—git he always was.”“PJ, you promise me you'll stay away from him,” Petunia said firmly. “Promise me! I mean it. You can take care of yourself, I do understand this, but he's one I don't want you anywhere around, for a multitude of reasons. While you say he is a spy, I don't trust him. It comes from knowing what he was like all those years ago. He might not follow that evil fool anymore, but I bet he's not nice.”“Trust me, I stay as far away from him as I can get,” PJ chuckled, shaking his head. “I want nothing to do with him. He's still snarky as hell and we'll end up in a fight if he keeps going with me. I got a taste of it one day and it was heading there if Remus hadn't diverted the conversation. No, no chance. And, honestly, I'm trying to stay away from and avoid all of those I knew in school, be it teachers or students, to protect myself.”“Good,” Petunia said with a relieved sigh. “I don't trust him, PJ. I really don't. He's—no, I know too much about him to believe he's completely changed and is the good guy.”“He's not a 'good guy', trust me. While he might be on the right side, he's not nice. Most want nothing to do with him.” PJ told her.“Let me ask this; did you encounter him after the fallout with mum while he was still in school?” He asked, pressing on. However, his mind was all over what she was telling him. Some he might be able to confirm with Remus and Sirius, but he wasn't sure how much. He still wasn't sure if he could use any of this for a story or if it would help Du Bois, but he wanted to know. Even if it was just for him to get a full understanding of what went on back then.Petunia thought over what was asked, trying to remember all those years ago then said, tone distracted, “I did a few times. While your mother and I weren't getting along, she seemed to know something was wrong because she wanted me to go with her if she went out and mum or dad weren't around. I think I can attribute it to Severus. Trust me, with how I acted, it must have been something big for her to want me along. I wasn't much nicer than Severus was to her, much to my disgust now.”“The year before her sixth, he tried talking to her a few times. My feeling is he wanted to try to fix the relationship. She wouldn't let him. We would go elsewhere. Either that or she would pretend she didn't see or hear him. I think I saw a little hurt on his face when this happened, but I can't be certain. What I can tell you for sure is there was anger, a lot of it. And I think I heard some rather snarky, nasty mutterings from him, including names that weren't at all nice.”“Not surprising,” PJ sighed, once more taking notes as fast as he could. “After that? Anything?”“It grew worse,” Petunia admitted with a shake of her head. She slouched down in her chair and clutched the phone tighter then said, “By then Lily was dating your father. From what I know, it probably didn't help anything at all on the front with Severus. She told me once he hated your father, for plenty of reasons. I'm sure the fact he was with Lily made it all the worse. She well—PJ, I think she was scared what he might do to her if she would turn him down again. I didn't listen in much to anything she talked about when it came to Hogwarts, but I heard some. And what I heard was those who she said later became Death Eaters were giving her problems. What she told mother and father was she thought it was because of Severus. Well, and the fact she was a Muggle-born. I'm not all that certain of the timeline when it came to the war bit, but I think it was going strong by then, or starting to heat up, one of the two. In letters later on, she did say she was in real danger because of so much.”“She was,” PJ admitted with a sigh and shake of his head. “So many were and it was going pretty good by then, but not as bad as it would get later on.”After a glance over his notes, mind working on what he wanted to know, he asked, pressing on, “I'm sure she was safe in school at least. After, though, was there anything you learned? I know what was said in the letters, of course, but I was wondering if you overheard more.”“Some, but not much,” Petunia admitted. “We were really on the outs by then, you see. And I wanted nothing to do with her. She was moving to be among your kind and looking to marry James. It was—well, I was being hateful. I'll admit that now and it was wrong. What I did find out from overhearing her and James talk to our parents was Severus had taken something called the Dark Mark, whatever that is.”“It's a mark that is on his left forearm to show he's a follower of Voldemort,” PJ explained distractedly as he took more notes. “He joined them after school it sounds like.”Petunia understood what he explained then pressed on, “Your mother wanted nothing to do with him, of course. James was going into that—areo training? Is that's what it's called?”“Auror training,” PJ corrected distractedly. “It's something like the SWAT with the police. They hunt dark Witches and Wizards. He and Sirius were both Aurors.”“Good respectable jobs then,” Petunia told him with a smile. She hadn't understood what it was before this talk, so she could appreciate it more. Then she pressed on, “I didn't hear much after that, just what was in the letters you read. So, I'm not sure how much more help I'll be. I'm sorry.”“Oh, you've been a huge help with information,” PJ told her honestly. “More than I would probably get anywhere else, even with a ton of research.”With a soft groan, he leaned back in his chair and rubbed his eyes with one hand, trying to think. “I think I can get the gaps after this from Sirius and Remus. They were around mum and dad a lot afterwards. I know some of it, like who gave up where mum and dad were living of course, what finally got them killed.”“Was that Severus?” Petunia asked, not sure as she didn't ever hear who had, just about that Prophecy bunk.“It was a friend of Dad's, one he knew all the way back to his first year,” PJ sighed then walked her through the whole nightmare with Wormtail, including how Sirius ended up accused of it. “While Snape didn't do the ultimate betrayal that led them to dying, he sure as hell helped push it there and holds part of the responsibility. It was just Wormtail who gave up where they were hiding.”“He is partially responsible if he told that evil man the Prophecy! It caused him to focus on your parents,” Petunia told him sternly. “And it was wrong.”“I won't deny it,” Harry agreed with a sigh. “And I didn't know about what he did until I read the letters you gave me. Honestly? I don't think anyone but Dumbledore and Snape knew, to tell the truth. Let me see what Sirius and Remus say. If they don't know, I'm sure the rest won't either.”“PJ, he's hateful, always was,” Petunia said, shaking her head. “I understand part of it, I really do. It was something I dealt with and did myself for so long. My jealousy over what your mother had that I didn't was so great it led me to treating her horrifically. Now I regret what I did, more than anyone will ever know. It cut me out of the life of someone I loved dearly and I'll never have a chance to undo the damage with her. However, I did realize in time and am trying to do the best I can by looking out for you. It was hard, I know, especially with Vernon, but I'm trying. It wasn't enough most times, I do realize it, but I did what I thought was best.”PJ smiled at what she said then told her, gently, “I understand why, Toonie. It might have been bad at times and there wasn't much you could do, but I understood the one part that counted the most; you loved me. It was more than enough for all the rotten that went on. When I was younger I didn't always get parts and it was bad, but I know now. You did all you could for me while trying to protect yourself from Vernon. Then you did what was needed to get me out. You don't have squat to make up to me.”“I should have done more,” Petunia admitted, shaking her head as guilt curdled her stomach over so much she allowed to go on over the years. “It—well, I wasn't much better than Severus at times and I'm sick with myself over it.”“You did what you could,” PJ told her softly, but with some firmness to his voice. “I didn't understand then, but I do now. You put yourself at plenty of risk of a beating to help me or show affection. Plenty wouldn't have done it for a child that wasn't their own. And whatever failings you had, you've more than made up for over the years. I've always known you loved me. Of all that went on, knowing you did more than made up for the rottenness. Remember that, always.”“Thank you,” Petunia almost whispered, smiling, with tears in her eyes. “You are so very forgiving, PJ, much like your mother.”“You're my Toonie and I love you. Like I told you before; I've always been your son. Most didn't know it, but I did and it's all that mattered to me,” PJ told her with a smile. “I worry about you as much as you do me, I swear. We—well, it's not been easy and I admit it, but we're trying. I think mum would have approved.”“I hope so,” Petunia admitted softly. “I—well, I loved your mother, more than she ever knew. The hateful part just got in the way for so long. Then, after she died, I was sick over what I did and couldn't get over parts until I realized how rotten I was. I adore and love you, something you know, but part was that I realized I would never have the chance to tell Lily I was sorry. That drove part of the foul bits I did because I was wallowing and kicking myself for my mistakes when there was no way to ever fix what I had done. I moved on, though. I don't think Severus has, if he hasn't changed much.”“Some can't,” PJ told her honestly. “I've seen it before with some that make mistakes that aren't repairable. They seem to think there is all the time in the world, but there isn't. When they realize there isn't, they can't get over it and just get worse because of the guilt they deal with. You did. And it's all that matters.”“I hope so,” Petunia told him with a little smile. “I just hope there is a point in the future we don't have to hide anymore and I can proudly proclaim to everyone you're my son.”“I'm not sure it'll ever come,” PJ admitted with a sad shake of his head. “My feeling is I'll have to hide who I am until the day I die. Just keep in mind that as time goes on, plenty will know. Sirius and Remus do. At this point in my life, they're pretty much the only ones who count.”After hearing her give a soft sigh and admit he was right, he pressed on to something lighter, though his brain was still working on what she said and the notes he took. “Next week I'm going to have a bit of a surprise for you.”“Oh? What kind?” She asked, intrigued. Up until now, he had gone out of his way to send her bits like chocolate and other small items, things she enjoyed, so she was curious what else.“I'm not telling. You'll have to wait and see,” he told her with a big grin. Then he began to laugh when she tried getting hints out of him. That was the Toonie he knew and loved. He then spent the rest of the time on the phone with her bantering back and forth in a good natured way about not only the hints, but plenty of other areas.
After hanging up the phone, PJ leaned back in his chair with a groan then picked up the notes he took and read through them. As he did, he wondered if this was something he should keep to himself. If Remus and Sirius didn't know the bit about Snape, telling them might be a monumentally bad idea as they were both likely to just end up infuriated. He sure as hell didn't fancy dealing with it if they did.
As he read through them, his brow furrowed. Honestly? He wanted to know so much more, though he wasn't certain why. It was—he did. Maybe it was to understand what happened so long ago in a way that was different than what it was like hearing it from someone telling him. He didn't think so though. It was as though something odd was trying to connect that was related to the mess. Though he didn't know how it connected, he was sure it did and it wasn't about Snape either. When he finished reading the notes, he straightened up then slid closer to the desk, opening his laptop and a new word processor document. Though his handwriting was much improved from when he was younger, it was still best to key in notes while they were fresh in case he couldn't understand some of what he had written. Maybe, as he keyed them in, more might jog loose or he might end up with a path to take. Either way, it was an area he wasn't going to stop looking into though it might not lead to anything work related. After propping up the notes, he went to work. As he keyed in what he had written down, adding more in the way of questions or notes about researching some bits, his mind kept circling to so much he had no answers for. It was niggling him, hard, and he would start focusing on it when he could. Yes, there was something here which would lead him down the path to another area, one that was huge.
